I bought my Yashica T4 (the "Super D" version) in 2001. I thought it was lost for good following a move, but found it a few years back. Perhaps because it was used so little, I haven't experienced any problems when it comes battery drainage or light leaks. Vintage camera prices today are truly surprising. I've owned my Leica M6 longer than the T4. I can understand the Leica holding its value, but not the prices some are willing to pay today. By comparison, the prices the T4 is fetching today are mind-boggling. But I do enjoy the images the T4 produces, especially considering that it's a point-n-shoot camera. I bought my T4 after being turned on to the book titled "Drive By Shootings". This book features the photography of a cab driver in New York City. He shot all of the images in the book using a T4. Most of them taken from his cab - while driving. Thus the title of the book.
I have one and it's in perfect condition. It has been a great camera. It will grow on you. Iso 400 film is what I use. It works really well since the aperture is quite slow. Lens is super sharp and I never had focus issues with mine, but I have a feeling quality control could have been somewhat inconsistent at the time they we're manufactured.
I actually repair these cameras and two things you said are red flags it's dying. The fact that your re-spooled film was yanked back too soon is because the gears need to be re-greased. The extra friction causes it to believe the roll is finished before it really is and thus ends it early. This is a common problem in many compact cameras. Also, your battery should not be draining fast when not in use, most likely the circuit has a failing diode. You can leave the battery in one of these for months or longer without use if things are properly working.
@@albin_ljungqvist i had a mju zoom, it also started re- spooling two thirds down a roll, it started to happen more and more before failing to take a single shot
Where are you based out of? A friend of mine has a t4 that has been out of commission for a year now for a couple issues and he can’t find anyone to repair it
Got my T3D at a thrifty store for $5 and I believe its the best one in its 2.8 aperature and its flash settings which stay where set until changed. LarryMac
I've found the biggest thing with the T5 that I have is the metering system. I've never had a bad exposure after putting through 10+ rolls. There is definitely also something intangible about the lens, maybe it's the micro-contrast you mentioned but it's definitely nice for that small package.
The frame lines in the lower right corner designate that that's the field of view of the lens at close range. The whole VFframe is used for general photography; the lens 'sees' a wider field when focused at infinity or further than its near range. The transition from one to the other is smooth, of course, not sudden.
I don’t really know anything about the camera. But 3 weeks ago someone was selling a canon A1. When I met him at his house the A1 seems to not work properly. Then he shows me some other camera and I saw the Yashica t4 super. Mint condition. He sold it to me for like 50 $ As I live in a island, New Caledonia we are far from the crazy price of this camera but I was surprised to discovered that it was a popular and pretty expensive camera. Si basically I have the Yashica t5 with me all the time along side my ricoh gr or my x100f Great video as always.
Had a T4 Super back in the day. Great little kit - always used it with Velvia slide film, and it always delivered great results. Sadly, it was ripped off at some point and I migrated to digital. I'll go back to film just as soon as a wheelwright opens up a shop in my neighbourhood. 😎
I knew I should’ve brought my film camera out to Wildwood when I was there but all I did was bring my professional mirrorless I found at a bargain bin inside of a Bed Bath and Beyond for $5 and took shots at the boardwalk while also realizing my camera lens was made out of cotton candy.
The T3 or T3D (the one I have) is a 2.8 Zeiss and then flash setting stays where you left it until you change it. It is kind of ugly, shaped like a brick, but its a great camera with very fast flash which recycles at .6 of a second. I got mine for $5 at a thrift store. Love it ! LarryMac
Sold mine for a bundle earlier this year, after shooting a roll through it, nice enough, but I cant really see me going back to analog... Still have the T3 and the Rollei35, plus some SLRs from back in the day...
You say, "this channel is getting dumber and dumber." I say, "this channel is getting better and better." I love your shots, and your humor kills me. I laugh so much watching your videos.
i was searching for this camera on Ebay for a long time. I scooped one for 300. Sure she is not perfect anymore but already in love. can't wait to develop the first films
Was going to chime in on entire VF being normal & lines being parallax but others covered it. I had the T4 Super with the tiny waist-level VF. Shot it for my project but didn't fall in love & sold it. Try a Stylus Epic (Mju II) - great little f/2.8 camera which also has the dork-with-the-flash-every-time-you-turn-it-on "feature". Tri-X in HC-110 rocks, just leave it in the soup a little longer for more contrast. Love the channel.
I've had 3 Yashica T4's in the last, oh oh , 25 years? 2 went in the drink (they are NOT waterproof). The thing is, these cameras are also kind of fun to use. Low tech, but with the possibility of really good photos. $500 worth of fun? Probably not, but you'd be glad to have this in your glovebox when your M6 is in its foam-lined camera case back home.
Im sitting here the whole time just asking myself "Do i have to turn the flash off each time i turn it on????" then you absolutely destroyed all of my hopes and dreams, leaving me as a shell of a man in my quest to find a point and shoot that remembers to keep the flash the hell off.
@@maksobaczewski4744 I have a couple Mju II's and i hate that. I used a point and shoot as a quick secondary camera, something that i can pull out to capture a quick photo without having to meter/focus etc. It sucks when i pull it out and have to hit a tiny button three times before i can take a shot lol.
I haven't used too many p&s but my Contax tvs 3 has a setting that lrts you set the default flash. So it doesn't remember your last flash setting but you can default it to flash turned off
@@maksobaczewski4744 Came here to say that. I have a sure shot telemax and it’s a switch that gives the option of flash on, off, and auto. The glass is pretty decent and it has a 35mm and 70mm focal length setting, as well as a date option if that’s your thing. Definitely recommend over the T4
Yeah prices are silly on some of these point and shoot cameras... Which is why I like going after the less hyped models that I can actually get cheap And if I ever find one of these at a thrift store/yard sale for cheap I'll shoot a test roll then put it on ebay because I have bills to pay
Brings back memories of the time when my camera was a Minolta AF-E II back in the...olden times. Before camera phones. Hell, before digital, possibly. (Apparently, it was known as the Freedom 200 in the USA because of course it was)
You went to Wildwood? Woohoo. I was in Jersey for school but I came back to the madness of Cali...Looks like we're hitting up all the same places. I guess morose, dour people have the same tastes.
my yashica t4 very often photographs out of focus or autofocus doesn’t work correctly. I don't understand what the problem is, I'm very disappointed (((
I found a "Super D" T4 in my mother's old electronics box this past summer. It still works (I was looking at it's front when it's auto-flash went off --ouch). I did s search online for info and the first eBay listing I saw was $1000. I nearly fell on the floor. Can't wait to use it. But I'll definitely be treating it gently.
I have a Photographing with this camera for about 10 years now. I also dropped it getting out of my truck End it landed in the gutter breaking the flash diffuser and got soaked and wet. It still works just can’t really use flash. Also recently went camping with it and went tubing down the river it got a little soaked I didn’t turn it on for the whole trip because I didn’t want to mess up the electronics if they were still wet. When I got home and turned on like nothing. Would like to order another one just as a back up
Thanks for actually talking about how bad the shutter sounds. I always thought mine was on the verge of death but I guess that’s how it is supposed to sound 🤷🏽♂️
My gf is so triggered by the shutter release sound, since about all her childhood photos have been taken on a T4. Great little P&S, especially for festivals - if that'll ever be a thing again
I can't believe I have this camera. I think I got it back in the day because of the Zeiss thing. I found it yesterday and RUclips decided to show me your video. How did it know?
"Modern negative feedback look". So good, I love your videos.
whats with those NF references? I noticed that also in other videos.

That scene legit made me laugh
Fun fact: The Billy Ocean song "Red Light Spells Danger" is about missing focus on a Yashica T4.
The French press on the shutter did it for me.
yeah i was like "what did he just say?" and then it clicked lol
I had too make coffee when i heard it. lol
very subtle, it almost slipped past me as well. so good XD
that frame line is for parallax correction. helps you know the accurate framelines when you're taking pics of things that are close to the lens.

That Yashica did a pretty amazing job with the metering when shooting straight into the sun.

For a cheap metallic alternative with a physical flash toggle control and a lens that is possibly even better, try the Ricoh FF-3AF...
From what I understand, these old LCD's don't drain battery, they only require power to change state and are not refreshed autmomatically
The humor in your videos it top notch 😂
One of the few, if not the only, point and shoots reviewers recommend for shooting slide film.
Frame line not centred is to correct for parallax error (viewfinder and lens are in a different alignment looking forward, as on a rangefinder).
