Australian professor on why NZ shouldn't join AUKUS | Q+A 2024

- Emeritus Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University Hugh White has deep reservations about New Zealand joining AUKUS Pillar Two. The New Zealand Government describes AUKUS Pillar Two as a technology-sharing agreement, not a defence or military arrangement.
But White has concerns about the risks New Zealand could be drawn into a conflict it didn't ask for by aligning itself too closely with the likes of the US, Australia, and the UK.
White is in New Zealand on the invitation of former Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Opposition leader Don Brash. The pair strongly oppose New Zealand joining Pillar Two.

The most compelling reason is there's no good place for N and Z to fit into that acronym
America, Nz, Uk, Straya = ANUS
Yah, France didn't join it cause the alliance name would have been Fuck-us. 😂😂😂
Australia New-Zealand United States. ANUS.

NUKAUS?
if you want enemies.. which NZ does not need because we are no threat..
It’s not how it works buddy. Ukraine wasn’t a threat to Russia, Tibet wasn’t a threat to China, Kuwait wasn’t a threat to Iraq.
LMAO.... defenseless imbeciles...
That attitude deserves for those doing the heavy lifting in the defence of global democracy to leave NZ at the mercy of an increasingly assertive China hungry for control, resources, and influence. Hopefully most Kiwis respect their own proud history of doing their bit too much to let themselves be sidelined in the difficult world situations that are on the way.
@@dna9838 we trade well with China.. AUKUS can go and intimidate and create war with foreign countries on their own.. China only ask of food from us.. soon we can sell with our own currency or gold instead of the US dollar which is much better for us.
If russia joined aukus and aussie left would be a rukus
lol!
if France joined it'd be Faukus
Relying on American system and alliance is a death wish, those very same systems has the potential to be used against New Zealand, due to America weaponising those systems, hence America uses blackmail to get there way, nz should be independent, American goals are not New Zealand goals.

The reason you have the freedom to decide when to take the garbage out is entirely dependent on the ‘rules based order’. The reason that the rules based order has existed in the IndoPacific is due to the US.
The reason we are as secure as we are ultimately rests with the US 7th Fleet.
A peer competitor to NZ defence capability & NZ trade security is a single Chinese coast guard ship.
@@stevewhan7308 how is it that the US doesn’t abide by its own rules, and exempts itself when it suits them? For instance Americans with the help of the British invaded Iraq based on lies, destroying civilian infrastructure with a million civilians killed as a direct result of there own actions, yet no consequences? Any other country that even attempts to take similar actions for their own security, they are instantly demonised! You may like following rules set by hypocrites, but I don’t :) That so called rule based order is currently complicit to Israeli genocide! Where is the protection of innocent women and children in Palestine? The US based rules is dominated over there, yet under there rules, genocide and war crimes is being committed, and Israel is allowed to continue with impunity, no thanks, these rules are deliberately being used to expand American influence, who want kiwis to come fight there war protecting Israeli genocide, don’t believe me, then why has our government sent our military to support Americans war against the Houthis/yemen? A country that openly declared war on Israel to stop its genocide! No kiwi should be sacrificing their lives for Israeli genocide!
Typical isolated, outdated NZ mindset. NZ entirely relies on the US led alliance to secure its trade routes, remain a democracy without being bullied around by regional powers like China, all without contributing anything much in terms of defence capabilities. Stay isolated and remain backwards.
NO. NEVER. Don't drag NZ into unjust conflicts. Enough colonial damage was done here in the past. Never get involved effectively with western colonialism. The lies the US/UK have told the world with NO accountability is immense.
So you'd prefer the Chinese to come and colonise?
Yes, bad things happened in the past with British imperialism.
But if you think China has no interest in dominating the region you're living in lala land.
Colonialism is when you read te reo
@@damolux3388 How many countries has China outright colonised since 1949? None. By way of contrast how many nations has the USA undermined, bombed, invaded, and financially ruined in that same period? The latest examples are Libya and Ukraine. It's actively encouraging Israel's genocide in Palestine, using Israel as a bulwark against the Middle East, which will fail, as will using Ukraine as a proxy against Russia. The USA will fight to the last Israeli and the last Ukrainian. The USA is nobody's friend and it's perfectly obvious what its intentions are with Australia - you're the next Ukraine, after one of its senile presidents declares a war it cannot win.

NZ could do with maintaining as much independence as possible....
Aukus is essentially the US Hegemon & its vassal state the UK, basing its potential war for hegemony against a hegemonic rival, away from their own borders.. IE, at some point the US may fight a war with China, 1st via a proxy, or by attacks on shipping lanes etc, & then potentially directly. But the US will do all it can to use its distance from its hegemonic rivals to its advantage, & instead have its battles fought via proxy. In the situation of Aukus, where Australia becomes a major base for US warships, submarines, fighters & bombers, then Australia becomes a target, & potentially a theatre of war in a hot war scenario. This would be by organised decision by both powers, as it was in many situations in WW1 & WW2 until things got out of hand. As the US knows a direct attack on China means a direct retaliation & vice versa. So a war between US & China over hegemonic status would be fought via proxy. The possibility of Aukus rendering Australia as that proxy is reason alone to slash the agreement.
What makes this whole situation so ridiculous is that the same corrupt political class that have signed Australia up to Aukus, also sold off most of Australia's seaports to chinese companies.. So Australia could become a proxy battle front in a worst case scenario with the same country that now owns most of its seaports, & is of course responsible for most of its wealth.. The costs for Australia of joining are far greater than even the hundred or so billion dollar submarine rort.. And that's just Australia.. There is just no reason for NZ to join, we dont even have a defence industry that can rort some private profits that Australia does. The only reason NZ would join would be for some Mafia style "protection".. This is all about US interest & US interest only, & the interests of the politicians who sign these corrupt deals for their various kickbacks.. There is nothing to be gained in joining, & an economy to lose in doing so..
Spot on my friend, they think we are all thick down under but we can see what they are up to. Plus just want to rob our tax dollars to benefit the Military industrial complex and the mega wealthy
If NZ has no military alliance partners….why wouldn’t a foreign nation just invade to take NZs resources. That is how world history has worked for most of the last 10 000 years. NZ is not too far away for a foreign power to colonise. The Māori and the British have already proven that. The world is becoming more over populated. Many nations would desire NZs arable farm land. New Zealand has no submarines, no intention to own or operate submarines, doesn't have the budget or facilities to maintain or operate submarines (let alone nuclear powered submarines) and NZ has a nuclear free policy.
Why would NZ want to join AUKUS?
Muldoon in 1983 attempted to sign us up to participate in the Australian Collins class submarine project. Muldoon and the 1983 National Government actually signed.Memo of understanding with Australia/ RAN that we we interested in building 4 subs as part 10 RAN/ RNZN sub project. That displays the degree of ignorance that exists in NZ about defence and naval realities Australia/ ANU and Hugh.White interest in diesel submarines has always been about wasting the RAN budget and disarming Australia.Diesel submarines are slow coastal defence boats and effectively mobile mines guard straights and ports. Deceased RNZN Cpt Ian Bradley told me the only use for the diesel submarines for NZ would be positioned in Cook Straight. What an earth would NZ want to use it's navy to defend Cook Straight. The wind and rocks do the job and Coo k Straight is not particularly shallow or narrow. In 1942 the Imperial.Japanese Navy's U cruisers rumouredly fired a few long lance torpedoes at the Cook Straight Ferry.
New Zealand is interested in joining Pillar 2, not Pillar 1. Only Pillar 1 of AUKUS relates to nuclear submarines.
To allow you to keep using the internet and Facebook.
NZ were not asked to join the Pillar 1 Submarine program and wouldnt have anything to offer in that area so what has that got to do with anything ? At best they may have been offered an opportunity to join Pillar 2 which has nothing to do with submarines so if like Canada, Japan, South Korea they choose not to be part of it thats completely their choice I'm sure AUKUS will manage without them.
Why ain't Australians making more noise about trying to stop this deal and do we still have enough time to do so. I agree with alot of what former Prime Minister Paul Keating has said.
Maybe because many Australians support AUKUS despite its massive cost.
@@geoffk8996 it hasn't been debated enough and the government rushed this through parliament probably to avoid so we could have 25 Colin class subs with change $ to built navel bases and buy other military defences. Why just have couple of subs when we could have so much more 👍
Because both major parties support it and don't want there to be any debate about it in parliament.
@@Trent-ol3my Navy can’t get enough submariners to crew the 6 subs they have.
Well we in Australia just accepted the legal framework to purchase 3 Virginia class nuclear powered submarines, so for NZ for pillar 2 for technology transfer, we will leave that debate to NZ respectfully, but AUKUS is pressing forward both Pillar 1 and Pillar 2. Australia of course will invite NZ to pillar 2 if NZ decides to come on board.

*China and USA have the same military power?* *That statement does not make sense, since China has much more industrial capacity than the United States, just to quote: the shipbuilding capacity in China is 232 times greater than that of the United States.*
*It makes no sense to say that China and the United States have the same military power in the Pacific Ocean, since China is superior, which is why the United States is asking all its allies for help.* *It's simple, the US has already lost its hegemony and will never recover it again.*
Joining AUKUS means becoming canon fodder like Ukraine
As long as the politicians have to be on the front lines in a war.
To beat china, we need to be investing in our pacific partners so they do not, as the sea levels rise in the pacific, see kiribati, these nations will need foreign aid and we should be there to help as a pacific power. We do not need to join new military alliances. We need to show our region that we can be a good partner.
Forming good relationships in our region is the priority for stability.
Kiribati is an issue, we need to be supporting that community now. Instead we’ll wait until it’s an emergency and then have too many refugees all at once, and there will be a flair up of racism as climate refugees struggle to integrate into NZ communities 🙄 if I can see it a mile away politicians can too.

Troops. Antipodes’ troops. Both nations, all nations, in the pacific, that are democratic, are forming (“many against one”) if that “one” invades another.
Here are five interpretations of the statement in the comment:
Collective Defense Pact: This suggests that democratic nations in the Pacific are forming a military alliance. If one nation is invaded, the others will collectively respond, similar to the principles of NATO.
Regional Security Cooperation: It implies that democratic countries in the Pacific are increasing their military cooperation to maintain regional stability and deter potential aggressors.
Unified Front Against Aggression: This interpretation highlights that democratic nations are standing together to defend each other against any form of invasion, demonstrating solidarity and mutual defense commitments.
Deterrence Strategy: The statement could mean that the democratic nations are creating a strategy to deter any single country from attempting an invasion by presenting a united and formidable military front.
Promotion of Democracy: It suggests an underlying goal of promoting and protecting democratic values in the Pacific region by ensuring that democratic nations support each other against authoritarian threats.
These interpretations suggest a strong, coordinated effort among democratic nations to maintain peace and security in the Pacific region through mutual defense and cooperation.
Australia should really be working more with China, not antagonising them by becoming a vassal state of the United States, which is way past its use-by date. China, even despite its economic, which pretty much every country is going through, is a growing power whilst the US is in decline. With its recent successes in AI chip and fusion reactor technology, China is further strengthening its lead over America. Australia is a part of Asia Pacific - not America - and needs to be looking into the future by extending a hand of cooperation. Pissing them off by forming yet another needless pact with America is not the way to do it.
Prof White published an alternative view of defending Australia in his books. Which is totally fine, and great to have a discussion. But he has an overt financial conflict of interest, which should have been disclosed.
How does writing books about defending Australia create a conflict of interest? He's just making the same arguments he makes in his books which is what anyone else would do.

China is not on the rise. At best it has plateaued, and most likely in decline. Go look at their demographics, and the sharp drop in GDP.
A wounded animal is dangerous.
Countries on the decline can be very dangerous...especially if they have nuclear weapons.
Not big on geopolitics, are you? You've absolutely no idea what you're posting. Thankfully, multipolar is rising fast, and the dedollarisation of the US$ in trade will maximise collective prosperity where sanctions will be mitigated globally. Since NZ was sanctioned NZ in the late 80s because of our no nuke stance forcing us to trade with China, we haven't suffered as US had hoped. China has soft power moving and grooving quietly across the South. They've worked WITH sovereign countries instead of owning them. BRICS has more territories joining, and America has absolutely no say.
@@AilsaPehi that was last decades data. Catch up, you are waaaaaay behind.
@@dupex2 agree, but that isn't a reason to capitulate to them
Yea nah
This guy doesn’t know what he is on about
To avoid TV One creating their own narrative hopefully, they will have someone else with an opposing view to create a balanced discussion - "'I'm not holding my breath. I suppose everyone has an opinion, including this guy. Summing up, he doesn't think we should pursue AUKUS Pillar 2 - Strategic sharing of technology. His reasoning? Because China might not like it and might therefore stop trading with us, which would hurt us economically. He also suggests we might be taken advantage of somehow in the relationship.
Sorry, but this seems a bit ridiculous. The only reason we are considering this is because of China's increasing militarization of the Asia-Pacific region, trying to get into Pacific islands and set up semi-naval bases, etc. Divided we fall, and easy targets are just that. It doesn't matter where you are-if you have something of value and you don't protect it, then someone will steal it from you.
Maybe he thinks we should join CRINK instead-the Axis Alliance group. Anyone in doubt should go and live in those dictatorships. The only reason China rose to power is because of globalization, starting in the 70s making it easy for China to attract business with all its cheap labour exploitation and the world turned a blind eye to it -a UN plan, And why is China doing well now? Because they don't even consider carbon taxes-they are exempt until 2030, so many countries get them to do a majority of industrial processes. And, 2030 might ring a bell - that is the same time for UN Agenda 2030, the Great Reset, etc.
Couldn't agree more...and would add , because of the miniscule size of our military we need an alliance to ward off any attempt from subversive aliments from within our country from trying to over throw the government by force and imposing some kind of Communist dictatorship with the CCP's backing in the near future!!!.❤️🇳🇿

The fact people think we have a choice lol we are already a part of the US military, we have two or 3 of their supercomputers here.
Nah, most of our computing power is in desktop PCs based on tech from Taiwan and China nowadays. 😊
Symbolize support for the US, your grasping at straws considering the main concept of AUKUS is nuclear submarines that have very little offensive capability compare to surface fleets, infact submarines are mostly defensive in nature and are only deployed in offensive roles to sink ships. That is their role, to sink ships, ships that China is building at a rate that the world has never seen before. Its always hard to listen to someone who starts of with blatant lies to push a narrative, when this is not about America, this is about Australia and gaining capabilities to defend themselves.
@@DjangoHTine Are you projecting? attack submarines don't have ballistic missiles, there is an entirely different class of submarine, called, you guessed it ballistic missile submarines. The Virginia carries 12 cruise missiles, they are called the tomahawk, if you want to see their effectiveness, then US attacked a Syrian airbase in 2017, they lauched 59 tomahawk cruise missiles, from two destroyers and the airbase was operational again in days.
Likewise a single Chinese type 055 has 112 vertical launch tubes, the Virginia class has 12.
This does not offer submarines any form of land attack, these few cruise missiles are more suited to support roles in a naval engagement, rather then engaging any sort of land target.
Of course they are dangerous, every military asset is dangerous, that's the whole point. Your not suppose to be eager to invade a country because you have a bigger force, but to say the AUKUS submarines are aimed at China is just lies, they are aim at protecting the Australian coastline. Something China can't say because its coastline is so small compared to the USA, or Australia, there entire Navy is designed for force projection and they have no friends in the region, so what kind of force are they projecting?
Have you heard of the H-20, H-6 the doubling of the Chinese ICBMs, their rapidly expanding hypersonic program, their new aircraft carriers and their 90 odd submarines.
I mean its pretty hypocritical to complain about Australia getting a handful of AUKUS submarines when you sit on 10x the number yourself, or complain about its cruise missile capability when a single destroy has 10x the offensive capability.
@@DjangoHTine The only reason, THE ONLY REASON CHINA IS UPSET IS BECAUSE THEY WANT TO INVADE AUSTRALIA! and this capability means they can't. Its the only reason to be upset, because you planed to do something and it was countered. Its the only reason to be upset over AUKUS submarines...
What a terrible interviewer. I hope she works for free tvone. Or is she someone's daughter?
Why was the terrible?
We have to join to protect our democracy, not only from outside threat but also from within...our military is to small so we either expand exponentially or join an alliance!!!.❤️🇳🇿
That’s bull crap, America is the biggest threat to democracy, the hypocrisy is too loud to ignore, corrupt is America
You do realise democracy doesn't actually exist right???
And there are over 100 countries in the NON - ALIGNED MOVEMENT !!
How can you join a club when your weren’t ask. NZ with their coziness to the CCP would be a hinderance to a western democratic alliance.
It’s essential that we are part of AUKUS.
Who is the very large interviewer name please

Belittle ourselves (and Hugh belittles Australia) is fuelling the aggression of China 🇨🇳 . It doesn’t lead to peace but lead to war.
Look at Russia 🇷🇺 , the Europe countries kept trading with Russia despite the 2014 Crimea invasion. They didn’t show enough strength to deter the dictators aggression and thus Putin invaded Ukraine 🇺🇦.
He's not belittling Australia he's just being realistic about America's ability and commitment to retain supremacy in what China considers to be its backyard. He's also saying Australia, along with like-minded countries, can defend itself in a new multipolar world. That's the opposite of belittling Australia. Saying Australia cannot survive without Uncle Sam is belittling Australia.

And what has china done to us , compared to what American hypocrites have done around the world , wake up , America is nothing more than a power hungry dictator ,spreading lies and hate , nothing but a parasite country run by criminals
