Australian professor on why NZ shouldn't join AUKUS | Q+A 2024

  • Emeritus Professor of Strategic Studies at the Australian National University Hugh White has deep reservations about New Zealand joining AUKUS Pillar Two. The New Zealand Government describes AUKUS Pillar Two as a technology-sharing agreement, not a defence or military arrangement.
But White has concerns about the risks New Zealand could be drawn into a conflict it didn't ask for by aligning itself too closely with the likes of the US, Australia, and the UK.
White is in New Zealand on the invitation of former Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Opposition leader Don Brash. The pair strongly oppose New Zealand joining Pillar Two.
Join Jack Tame and the Q+A team and find the answers to the questions that matter. Made with the support of NZ on Air.

The reason you have the freedom to decide when to take the garbage out is entirely dependent on the ‘rules based order’. The reason that the rules based order has existed in the IndoPacific is due to the US.
The reason we are as secure as we are ultimately rests with the US 7th Fleet.

@@stevewhan7308 how is it that the US doesn’t abide by its own rules, and exempts itself when it suits them? For instance Americans with the help of the British invaded Iraq based on lies, destroying civilian infrastructure with a million civilians killed as a direct result of there own actions, yet no consequences? Any other country that even attempts to take similar actions for their own security, they are instantly demonised! You may like following rules set by hypocrites, but I don’t :) That so called rule based order is currently complicit to Israeli genocide! Where is the protection of innocent women and children in Palestine? The US based rules is dominated over there, yet under there rules, genocide and war crimes is being committed, and Israel is allowed to continue with impunity, no thanks, these rules are deliberately being used to expand American influence, who want kiwis to come fight there war protecting Israeli genocide, don’t believe me, then why has our government sent our military to support Americans war against the Houthis/yemen? Aukus is essentially the US Hegemon & its vassal state the UK, basing its potential war for hegemony against a hegemonic rival, away from their own borders.. IE, at some point the US may fight a war with China, 1st via a proxy, or by attacks on shipping lanes etc, & then potentially directly. But the US will do all it can to use its distance from its hegemonic rivals to its advantage, & instead have its battles fought via proxy. In the situation of Aukus, where Australia becomes a major base for US warships, submarines, fighters & bombers, then Australia becomes a target, & potentially a theatre of war in a hot war scenario. This would be by organised decision by both powers, as it was in many situations in WW1 & WW2 until things got out of hand. As the US knows a direct attack on China means a direct retaliation & vice versa. So a war between US & China over hegemonic status would be fought via proxy. The possibility of Aukus rendering Australia as that proxy is reason alone to slash the agreement.
What makes this whole situation so ridiculous is that the same corrupt political class that have signed Australia up to Aukus, also sold off most of Australia's seaports to chinese companies.. So Australia could become a proxy battle front in a worst case scenario with the same country that now owns most of its seaports, & is of course responsible for most of its wealth.. The costs for Australia of joining are far greater than even the hundred or so billion dollar submarine rort.. And that's just Australia.. There is just no reason for NZ to join, we dont even have a defence industry that can rort some private profits that Australia does. The only reason NZ would join would be for some Mafia style "protection".. This is all about US interest & US interest only, & the interests of the politicians who sign these corrupt deals for their various kickbacks.. There is nothing to be gained in joining, & an economy to lose in doing so..

That displays the degree of ignorance that exists in NZ about defence and naval realities Australia/ ANU and Hugh.White interest in diesel submarines has always been about wasting the RAN budget and disarming Australia.Diesel submarines are slow coastal defence boats and effectively mobile mines guard straights and ports. Deceased RNZN Cpt Ian Bradley told me the only use for the diesel submarines for NZ would be positioned in Cook Straight. What an earth would NZ want to use it's navy to defend Cook Straight. Well we in Australia just accepted the legal framework to purchase 3 Virginia class nuclear powered submarines, so for NZ for pillar 2 for technology transfer, we will leave that debate to NZ respectfully, but AUKUS is pressing forward both Pillar 1 and Pillar 2. Australia of course will invite NZ to pillar 2 if NZ decides to come on board.
Reality is if China invades Taiwan and the US requests assistance from Australia, we will assist and engage in conflict, that's reality.
We hope that doesn't occur but it is possible.

Here are five interpretations of the statement in the comment:
Collective Defense Pact: This suggests that democratic nations in the Pacific are forming a military alliance. If one nation is invaded, the others will collectively respond, similar to the principles of NATO.
Regional Security Cooperation: It implies that democratic countries in the Pacific are increasing their military cooperation to maintain regional stability and deter potential aggressors.
Unified Front Against Aggression: This interpretation highlights that democratic nations are standing together to defend each other against any form of invasion, demonstrating solidarity and mutual defense commitments.
Deterrence Strategy: The statement could mean that the democratic nations are creating a strategy to deter any single country from attempting an invasion by presenting a united and formidable military front.
Promotion of Democracy: It suggests an underlying goal of promoting and protecting democratic values in the Pacific region by ensuring that democratic nations support each other against authoritarian threats.
These interpretations suggest a strong, coordinated effort among democratic nations to maintain peace and security in the Pacific region through mutual defense and cooperation.

Australia should really be working more with China, not antagonising them by becoming a vassal state of the United States, which is way past its use-by date. China, even despite its economic, which pretty much every country is going through, is a growing power whilst the US is in decline. With its recent successes in AI chip and fusion reactor technology, China is further strengthening its lead over America. Australia is a part of Asia Pacific - not America - and needs to be looking into the future by extending a hand of cooperation. Pissing them off by forming yet another needless pact with America is not the way to do it.

I suppose everyone has an opinion, including this guy. Summing up, he doesn't think we should pursue AUKUS Pillar 2 - Strategic sharing of technology. His reasoning? Because China might not like it and might therefore stop trading with us, which would hurt us economically. He also suggests we might be taken advantage of somehow in the relationship.
Sorry, but this seems a bit ridiculous. The only reason we are considering this is because of China's increasing militarization of the Asia-Pacific region, trying to get into Pacific islands and set up semi-naval bases, etc. Divided we fall, and easy targets are just that. It doesn't matter where you are-if you have something of value and you don't protect it, then someone will steal it from you.
Maybe he thinks we should join CRINK instead-the Axis Alliance group. Anyone in doubt should go and live in those dictatorships. The only reason China rose to power is because of globalization, starting in the 70s making it easy for China to attract business with all its cheap labour exploitation and the world turned a blind eye to it -a UN plan, And why is China doing well now? Because they don't even consider carbon taxes-they are exempt until 2030, so many countries get them to do a majority of industrial processes. And, 2030 might ring a bell - that is the same time for UN Agenda 2030, the Great Reset, etc.

Symbolize support for the US, your grasping at straws considering the main concept of AUKUS is nuclear submarines that have very little offensive capability compare to surface fleets, infact submarines are mostly defensive in nature and are only deployed in offensive roles to sink ships. That is their role, to sink ships, ships that China is building at a rate that the world has never seen before. Its always hard to listen to someone who starts of with blatant lies to push a narrative, when this is not about America, this is about Australia and gaining capabilities to defend themselves.

    • @Unknown-gi1uj
      @Unknown-gi1uj 6 месяцев назад

@@DjangoHTine Are you projecting? attack submarines don't have ballistic missiles, there is an entirely different class of submarine, called, you guessed it ballistic missile submarines. The Virginia carries 12 cruise missiles, they are called the tomahawk, if you want to see their effectiveness, then US attacked a Syrian airbase in 2017, they lauched 59 tomahawk cruise missiles, from two destroyers and the airbase was operational again in days.
Likewise a single Chinese type 055 has 112 vertical launch tubes, the Virginia class has 12.
This does not offer submarines any form of land attack, these few cruise missiles are more suited to support roles in a naval engagement, rather then engaging any sort of land target.
Of course they are dangerous, every military asset is dangerous, that's the whole point. Your not suppose to be eager to invade a country because you have a bigger force, but to say the AUKUS submarines are aimed at China is just lies, they are aim at protecting the Australian coastline. Something China can't say because its coastline is so small compared to the USA, or Australia, there entire Navy is designed for force projection and they have no friends in the region, so what kind of force are they projecting?
Have you heard of the H-20, H-6 the doubling of the Chinese ICBMs, their rapidly expanding hypersonic program, their new aircraft carriers and their 90 odd submarines.
I mean its pretty hypocritical to complain about Australia getting a handful of AUKUS submarines when you sit on 10x the number yourself, or complain about its cruise missile capability when a single destroy has 10x the offensive capability.

How can you join a club when your weren’t ask. NZ with their coziness to the CCP would be a hinderance to a western democratic alliance.

Belittle ourselves (and Hugh belittles Australia) is fuelling the aggression of China 🇨🇳 . It doesn’t lead to peace but lead to war.
Look at Russia 🇷🇺 , the Europe countries kept trading with Russia despite the 2014 Crimea invasion. They didn’t show enough strength to deter the dictators aggression and thus Putin invaded Ukraine 🇺🇦.

He's not belittling Australia he's just being realistic about America's ability and commitment to retain supremacy in what China considers to be its backyard. He's also saying Australia, along with like-minded countries, can defend itself in a new multipolar world. That's the opposite of belittling Australia. Saying Australia cannot survive without Uncle Sam is belittling Australia.
