A lot of comments here about the poor ... If you want to see the real NZ, go to any WINZ office in one of the larger centres on any day of the week. Stand in line - you can hear the difficulty people are having ... and its a real eye-opener, about how the other half live. As a superannuitant I have been to our local office 3 times in the last 3 weeks, for a couple of things - and its both depressing and heartbreaking. No-one knows until you've been there and stood in line with others worse off than you, whether its from accident, loss of work, people trying to get their entitlements, fighting for them ... some ppl have no phones, really struggling even just to communicate .... others with obvious mental health issues, its just heartbreaking. And the security guards on the doors just sums everything up.
@@Bill6000-v4s Yes, but there's a lot of NZers who have never seen this side of NZ - that is my point. It would be a shock to them, as it was for me. I mean, there was a chap on crutches who had lost part of his leg. He had his other hand bandaged so he was having difficulty standing. He was in the carpark, had been told to wait out there for a taxi - no seating out there of course. He had been to the hosp he told me, then here to WINZ - and he had been underpaid (nothing new in that!). He couldn't speak properly - I felt for him, talked to him a bit. Then someone came out to help him, talk to him, and the taxi finally arrived. I wondered where or how he lived. THIS IS NZ.

@@Bill6000-v4s The reality that poverty has spread across into middle class families is indeed a new issue. Of course it should have been dealt with decades ago when the problems began for those unfortunately born into 'the bottom of the heap' but it wasn't dealt with & has spread to marginalise an ever increasing proportion of kiwis. So the usual occurred; that is people were offered the opportunity to swap from neo-liberalism to conservatism. In a while after things have continued to worsen we will all be encouraged to jump from conservatism back to neoliberalism - and so it goes. Tweedledum Vs Tweedledee. Nothing will change until all kiwis realise we have no friends much less any allies in this cold hard world & instead of being anyone's pet we need to only do things that are in our favour. It is not in our favour to continue to be dominated by the $USD, a currency whose blow out destruction is inevitable, especially considering that US politicians will throw the economies of other dependent nations to the wolves first.
This government’s so-called economic strategy of 'balancing the books' is like claiming I’ve improved my household budget by refusing to pay the power bill. Sure, my bank account might look healthier in the short term, but my house is now in the dark. Neglecting essential investments to show a prettier balance sheet isn't financial responsibility-it's shortsightedness. Success measured by the wrong metrics isn't success at all.

the half yearly report out today will show things are even worse. National now saying no return to surplus until '28-29. Which just happens to be the next term. I can see the future , there will be more cuts, more job losses no improvement at all, but towards the next election they will say , it's taking us a bit longer to get back on track ,but if you just give us a few more years... and we will get back on track - exactly what he said in 2023.

A fantastic interview. Really holding the PM's feet to the fire. There were a lot of jaw dropping moments, but the "I don't know" response, to the question as to whether poor peoples live had improved relative to the rich, was noteworthy.
As much as I dislike Act, I love how Seymour keeps undermining Luxon. With David confirming it wasn't a bottom line and Luxon admitting he knew what the bill would do (because admitting otherwise will show he didn't know what he was signing up for), it inevitably shows that Luxon is not a good political negotiator.
The goal isn't usually to negotiate to a person's bottom line. It's about finding the middle ground, as any deal should benefit both parties. If you go into every negotiation to try get the most for the least out of the other party then your not working in good faith and I doubt anyone would want to work with you. If you hire someone you don't straight away when it comes to salary negotiations push that person to compromise all the way down to their minimum number where they are about to walk out the door. That whole argument was stupid, Jack obviously doesn't understand negotiations
Nothing wrong with being rich. That’s not issue. Though it adds to his ability to be out of touch. The issue is Chris Luxon is an abysmal politician, and hes running our country People of all political stripes should be concerned with that, especially after seeing him in this interview

BY slowing the economy and reducing GDP its actually harder to pay down debt, his attitude is if a household has less income, then they need to cut their expenses, but the debt level still remains the same where logically they need to increase the income to make any debt more serviceable
But you need to add that there need to be funds coming in to go out. We spent too long based on borrowing and its hard to service the debt the bigger it gets let alone Pay back the capital borrowed. If you've got a credit card and don't understand this you go bankrupt when the bank calls in the debt. Jack Tame now thinks he's an economic expert and when you listen to him he clearly doesn't understand this simple principle. The government has to service the ever burdeoning debt and find funds beyond this before the borrowing is called in by the banks and get to a place to not just service the debt but drop the capital borrowing. I am grateful that they are on the right track. He invites people on to question but then doesn't listen to their answers, he is arrogant and rude. Hard to listen to as he heckles his 'invited guest' and tries to gaslight their expertise and experience. The poorest in nz are better off relative to the working class who have not received the boost to their wages - in fact have had to join the food queues with the poor. They are the ones who are being patient because they know the cuts on wasteful spending are vital to get things back on track.
That old household budget analogy is a pernicious falsehood that we need to do away with. A government that can (order its central bank to) print its own currency can never go broke. It just needs to worry about keeping inflation in check. Government debt should not be seen as a bad thing, assuming it is being spent on things that will make us all better off.
@@andrebittar8666 Yes correct, obviously if it was as easy as that every country would do this, risks hyperinflation, crashing dollar, good for exporters, credit rating would dive, capital flight from investors or Kiwis trying to protect wealth, but if done to overtime increase productivity and improve the countries resilience then its good.
YES you are so right, the nats will not want to remember that at all, just blame Labour for every thing. I remember when Labour won back in 2017 they said we have to clean up Nationals mess, then Covid19 hit.

Its because Luxon was not answering any direct questions with direct answers and avoiding it by going straight into some kind of elaboration or information dump that is not a direct answer. If luxon gave a direct answer first, i'm sure Jack would have allowed luxon to elaborate in detail to explain his answer. Which is quite a common characteristic that Jack has with his interviews. But because of the lack of direct answers this was a very messy exchange and if jack let luxon not answer direct questions then this is not a informative debate but just luxon having the floor to himself saying whatever he wants.

"Despite the unemployment rate falling under the previous government it's their fault that it's going up after we've enacted our economic policies." The truth is that National and ACT both adhere to economic principles that are reliant on high unemployment (or high immigration) to create competition between employees to lower wages, same reason they laid off thousands of government workers despite the massive expense and worse outcomes, it was to flood the labour market with the same skilled workers NACT's donors need, preferably cheaply. Holding the government accountable for their actions is crucial. By dishonoring their obligations to the Treaty of Waitangi and the Queen of England's contract between Māori and the Crown, the government is not only betraying the trust of Māori but also undermining the very foundations of New Zealand's society. The Treaty of Waitangi is a sacred document that represents the partnership between Māori and the Crown. By ignoring its principles and obligations, the government is creating a toxic environment that can lead to conflict, division, and social unrest. As a responsible and just government, they should be working to: 1. Uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi 2. Respect Māori sovereignty and self-governance 3. Address historical injustices and breaches of the Treaty 4. Foster a culture of partnership, mutual respect, and understanding between Māori and non-Māori By holding the government accountable, you are standing up for the rights and dignity of Māori people and the integrity of the Treaty of Waitangi. Your voice matters, and collective action can bring about positive change.
Based on the principles of justice, equality, and human rights, here's what should happen in this situation: *Immediate Actions* 1. *Halt the bill's progress*: The government should immediately stop the bill's progression through Parliament to prevent further harm and division. 2. *Meaningful consultation*: The government should engage in genuine, respectful, and inclusive consultation with Māori communities, iwi, and organizations to understand their concerns and aspirations. 3. *Respect Treaty principles*: The government should reaffirm its commitment to upholding the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, including partnership, active protection, and redress. *Long-term Solutions* 1. *Co-governance and co-management*: Establish robust co-governance and co-management arrangements that recognize Māori sovereignty and self-governance. 2. *Constitutional reform*: Consider constitutional reform to enshrine the Treaty of Waitangi and Māori rights in New Zealand's constitution. 3. *Redress and reparations*: Provide meaningful redress and reparations for historical injustices and breaches of the Treaty. 4. *Māori-led decision-making*: Support Māori-led decision-making processes and institutions to ensure that Māori voices are heard and respected. 5. *Education and awareness*: Promote education and awareness about the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori history, and the importance of indigenous rights.

He was in the carpark, had been told to wait out there for a taxi - no seating out there of course. He had been to the hosp he told me, then here to WINZ - and he had been underpaid (nothing new in that!). He couldn't speak properly - I felt for him, talked to him a bit. Nothing will change until all kiwis realise we have no friends much less any allies in this cold hard world & instead of being anyone's pet we need to only do things that are in our favour.

If you are waiting for any government to lift you off the poverty line, you will be waiting until you die. It's the individuals' responsibility to lift themselves up, not the role of government
Under Luxons watch economy is in the toilet forecasts of another 27k unemployed by Xmas and next year not looking any better. Record number of Kiwis leaving and may never return. Reduced tax revenues only mean further cuts to public spending - health, education, police and everything else. Infrastructure is crumbling National got rid of 3 Waters and where is it's replacement (broken pipes and arsenic) ? Ferries cancelled where is it's replacement (NZders on the hook for +$500m contract cancellation fees). Even though they claim inflation has decreased the cut's in public spending will hit us in the pocket poorer services means we will need to go private.
Act like this isn't because of COVID lol. See how it goes for you. you'll just push the country further right. leftists need to read some economics books.

Taking from the poor and giving to the rich ,really the poor dont have any money to take
Lux skin
Oh dear, that was hard to watch. Luxon looked like he wanted to just run away. So glad to see him being forced to answer a question. It made the attempts to answer with gibberish spin stick out like a sore thumb. Every Kiwi should watch this.
But he didn't answer, kept up with his patronizing repetitive spin
Inflation is put into place from government goals, council spending. Roads, Power, water, food. Get money back in Tax. Their main goal is setting up overseas relationships, what sector are they looking at? Natural resources, intellectual property rights, tourism, goods and services? What businesses will be set up for employment.
Why does he ALWAYS talk about strong feelings on 'all sides'. This coalition is targeting Maori in a deliberate attempt to shut them up. Punitive targeting of truancy stats is helping Maori? No investigation of why kids are truanting. The gang patch law, not looking into what has contributed to the growth in gangs in Aotearoa. Incompetent in all his dealings wth Maori
Jack: "Now Mr Luxon, Seymour says he wants to shoot all poor people on sight. What do you say to people who call you out for letting this happen?"
Luxon: "Well what I'd say to you Jack is Labour made me and theres a lot of sides to this debate" - probably
Labour did that investigating in their last year in power. Turns out it's mostly poverty. The parent's are usually on minimum wage and can barely afford rent, which means the kids have to work if they want to eat or have power as well as a home. They also found out it's mostly students from certain areas of auckland who are doing it, along with some poor record keeping.
@tanepukenga1421 Are you seriously telling me Maori students play truant because they have to work. What a load of contemptuous BS 😂
@@peter-yy5qy No, the INQUIRY did. If you're too racist enough to listen to experts actually going out there and meeting the kids, that's on you. Perhaps you should be less racist and look things up instead of indulging in your hatred.
Ha ha ha I love the way Jack makes him stumble over his words
Like this comment if your tax 'relief' has already been eaten up by increased costs under National.
I didn't even get one and my tax went up
National is not responsible for increased costs. Reckless spending by the last government is. You know this.
These crooks gave land lords $2.9B / $2,900,000,000 in tax deductions in one year.
To put that in perspective, every single settlement with the waitangi tribunal in 180 years, has cost the government, $2.5B.
This guy is really not good at this.

Anyone time how much of this interview humpty spend avoiding questions?
all 29 minutes of it
PM's body language suggests he is feeling angered, uncertain and out of his depth, unprepared to be called on inconsistencies and tired tropes.
The poor getting poorer that's ok he's wealthy he's sorted.
No evidence that the poor are better off, but that's ok because they've re ajusted the child poverty targets.
21:55 - "I'm sure David Seymour doesn't like it because he wanted a full national referendum"... but the Bill demands a full national referendum; it's an explicit condition embedded in the Bill.
Give this dude a thesaurus, right or wrong "what I'd say to you" surely his media trainers realize this is annoying asf.
Spot on
Not all heros need capes. Thank you Jack 😅
Go jack go🎉
Savings out of the pockets of health and wellbeing and into the pockets of landlords, destroying business confidence and jobs. Changing the rules so you can sell your own 3 properties tax free in the first year if government 😡
💯 The reason why he focused on changing the brightline test and the tax rules for landlords (rather than business taxes, like Tame suggested) is because those things affected him directly. I'd say he's self-serving, but I genuinely think he's so clueless and out of touch that he thinks everyone has a stable of investment properties in their back pocket.
Hes just slime and useless. Mr Blame blaming while running a crap coalition
Worst MP and PM EVER.
Jack is on the right track by asking insightful questions.
This is why less people are watching TV1 news and more jobs are being lost. Because the whole interview is not about giving us information, its all about trying to entrap who ever is being interviewed, discredit them and make one political party look better than the other. We need unbiased media that provides us with information that informs us.

If you’ve watched Jack Tame you’d know that he actually criticises all parties. You just don’t like seeing baldy get dragged and held accountable. You essentially voted for a moron 😀

Way to go Jack, putting the PM to the sword on all political matters.
I hate national and labour, but this platform for getting answers is a joke. Pressing for answerers of immediate solutions and outcomes in a measure of a few months is a joke. Im not a fan of Luxon as a deflector at all but this presenter is a joke also.
jack Tame you are THE MAN
What was that laugh from Luxon around cutting the smoking legislation. Slimy!

That’s his “oh crap I’ve been caught out” laugh
Increasing division in New Zealand supports the "exclusion" of Māori renegs the agreement in the treaty of Waitangi! And then to refuse a discussion about the "negotiations between two parties" is laughable 😂😂😂
The increasing division is mainly caused by the narrative that the racist separatist Māori party continue to push. Their followers are as ignorant as they are.
Yes, he went a step further, but just short of telling the truth - that he actually wanted the bill to go consensus
Luxon cant ever give a str8 reply.....dances round everything

Its all about jobs...did he not look at the unemployment rate?
Did he not look at his own policies?
@@andrebittar8666 Well we all know his failed policies are labours fault.
Why would he care, hes wealthy and hes sorted 😆
Luxon in saying how his government is working to hard to improve things for Māori, then flips in his sentence to stressing some win around emergency housing/ social housing in the next breath....It betrays to us all his sense of what Māori should be aiming for ....crumbs under his watch, nothing like mana motuhake, nothing like their true constitutional rights . The point where Jack points to lack of Luxon's moral compass is bang on
Compare this interview back to back with Debbie Ngarewa-Packer's interview..
No questions on Jack's political belief's
I though he went pretty hard on Debbie to. He treats everyone the same, playing the devils advocate.
This is what happens if Jack's questions are not answer repetitively, this is all on Luxon. Compare the interview with Chippies when he was PM in 2023, he got grilled too if he didn't answer to Jack's satisfaction.
@@drednorzt Yeah, the main things with Jack is if you lie or try to avoid answering, he'll nail you to the wall. Even if he doesn't like your answers, as long as you're coherent and don't lie, he'll accept the answer.
The funny thing is he's come out with his own politics before and it's nothing that most would suspect. Certainly not what Bigboy thinks they are
The fact he let Jack talk over him constantly proves hes not capable of being PM
He actually talked over Jack, his mindless patter over potential questions, even worse than I expected, and expectations were low to nol!

As a responsible and just government, they should be working to:
1. Uphold the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
2. Respect Māori sovereignty and self-governance
3. Address historical injustices and breaches of the Treaty
4. Foster a culture of partnership, mutual respect, and understanding between Māori and non-Māori
By holding the government accountable, you are standing up for the rights and dignity of Māori people and the integrity of the Treaty of Waitangi. Your voice matters, and collective action can bring about positive change.
Based on the principles of justice, equality, and human rights, here's what should happen in this situation:
*Immediate Actions*
*Long-term Solutions*
By taking these steps, New Zealand can move towards a more just, equitable, and reconciled society, where Māori rights and interests are respected and protected.
