    My wife does not like using turmeric because I get the yellow of the turmeric all over the benches. It is a great antioxidant. I get 12kg of turmeric per crop. I have turmeric and Ginger growing together with garlic. We love curries. I'm in Lismore NSW.

    Wow, that's a bumper crop of Turmeric, you've got to be happy with that 😀👍
    Make sure to add a goodly ammount of black pepper to any dishes you make that you use the Turmeric in, as the black pepper (specifically the piperine in black pepper) helps increase the absorbsion and health benefits of Turmeric.

      Was a lot more that I thought I'd get. In all honesty, I thought 4kg or so but over 7 was ridiculous. Not sure where we're going to be able to store it as the freezers need to be turned off while we're renovating. I always add a load of fresh pepper to dishes so have that all sorted. The girls would say far more than is needed a lot of the time. 😉😄

    Aquaponics huh? I have never done that. Living on the Westcoast of the South Island of New Zealand, there is Water galore. Just bought a section there and building a wooden house and looking forward to self-sufficient living, aquaponics seems to be the answer. Just need to shelter it a bit better, as we have very strong winds gusting through the valley down below our section. I saw your video on ginger and now on tumeric as well, hmmm, my favourites. Thanks for sharing and making such great videos.

    Excellent harvest! I didn't know the leaves were edible.
    BTW all you need to do to get most of a plant out in one piece is to flood the bed completely and stop up the drain. Grab the roots and wiggle them out of the flooded pebbles, then dunk the root ball into a large bucket full of water and shake the beads off with a twisting action. 90% of the beads will detach and float free.

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  2 года назад

      Tried that flood method a few times & with the roots matted as they are on the larger spice plants it doesn't always work.

    I thought the turmeric was in the roots, or as you care calling them rhizomes, but there was that yellow core to the plant lower down ... is that also turmeric and can it be used or treated the same way. That is an incredible plant.

    I gave my thumbs up for your video, I like what you are doing. It looks like you harvest the curcuma too early, but i guess you had to. The plants were growing out of the roof. The leaves of your plants were huge. Soif the roof was not thelimit i think you could have got a lot of tumericof it. I have bin growing tumeric in Costa rica, Organicly. I was fortunate to use worm compost/liquid AKA Black Gold. I poured tons of the Black Gold on the plants, just before it starts raining every day. I had an amazing 15 KG/m2. Friend of the farm uses it to make tumeric oil, He told us it had "too much" curcumine in it after he brought it to a lab for analysis. He diluted it when he used our curcumine to make oil out of it. Thanks for your wonderfull video!

    Rob, I really like your channel.. now you have a few different types of gardens, from wicking beds, to Grow Bags to the Aquaponic beds.. which of these have you found to be the most successful in terms of yield ? Also which of these gardens are the easiest to look after and maintain, example, for someone who works all week and only gets into the garden on the weekends..

    • @RobsAquaponics
      @RobsAquaponics  6 лет назад

      Hi Steve. I think the aquaponics would be the best for leafy greens & herb yields above the rest. I think the honey pod peas did better in there than the soil as well.
      As for maintenance, the wicking beds would be the easiest as they're self watering & only require being topped up once, maybe twice a week.
      Then all I need to do is come back to plant, harvest or fertilise them. The yield you get from them will depend on the soil you use but I have found they grow a bit slower than aquaponics & hydroponics.
      Cheers Steve.

      Hi rob i would like to share a story with you in the 80s my dad was growing strawberry's and he watered them from a small spring fed dam that i had put a fish tank of guppies into. Well in no time there were millions of them. lol We had a large pile of wood shavings we used for the strawberry's and a sweet potato self sow in the pile . We harvest a huge amount of potatoes from this pile of shavings. They were so clean and so big, I thought you may like to try to grow in that media one day to see how it goes you never know. Just harvested my first turmeric (8 month growth in container). I noticed many of the roots shot down to the bottom of the container and had large 'bulbs' at the end. I thought they might just be nutrient and/or water storage. Do you know if that's good or bad? And if it's bad, suggestions on improvement? As always love the videos.
