I don't normally read Gothic romance so is the "pretend to be your father's ghost to kidnap you" a common trope or was that a specific Phantom of the Opera reference
They don't always do that specifically but always they do something horrible and usually criminal to force a relationship and also gain power or wealth at the same time, but unlike some other romance genres that's treated as Horror in Gothic romance
In a lot of Gothic romance, the love interest isn't even the horrible one - often BOTH love interests are attacked by a curse or evil family member or just the general atmosphere of the house . . . In cases where you DO get a questionable Gothic love interest, he is probably the MC's employer or neighbour with a dark secret, not a ghost.

@gwendolynrobinson3900 The original novel is not a horror novel, it's a mix between an mystery novel and a gothic romance. People always assume it was originally a horror novel because of the more-accurate-to-the-book 1925 silent movie that made the Phantom into one of Universal Monsters, because Erik's face and attitude are even worse in the novel.
The Leroux book is more mystery/detective than romantic. POTO is public domain so there's many books that go towards the gothic romance! Susan Kay's focuses more on Erik/The Phantom backstory with romance at the end. My old POTO forum days though, many agreed Susan Kay wrote a good book until the ending where it got super weird OOC super quick. 😂 Kinda like fanfiction. There's also a VARIETY of adaptions. My favorite is the Charles Dance TV movie. The Christine is probably the most hated of all time, but besides that, it was a unique adaption of the book and Charles Dance was very charming in it.
@@gwendolynrobinson3900 The Susan Kay book is unreal!
