    I have a 2014 Gibson 120th year anniversary Explorer in that awesome cherry color. Bought it brand new back in 2015 for about 2,000 Euros, and it is worth every single penny. The build quality, fit and finish, playability, and of course the sound are all incredible. After 6 years, it still smells great, like mahogany vanilla, too! It has that heavy, warm, rich 60s, 70s, and 80s classic rock / heavy metal sound, but can also pull off pretty much any genre. Not as heavy and fat / creamy sounding as a Les Paul, but also not as thin, bright, and light sounding as a Strat, either - I think it has the perfect, super balanced THE hard rock / heavy metal guitar tone. Even when playing with full gain, you can still clearly hear all the separate notes in an arpeggio, etc. It's just so clear and precise, you'll never be able to go back to a cheaper / lesser guitar. The natural sound of the instrument is just so amazing that I never use any pedals, and just play it directly plugged in to my Marshall tube amp. Beautiful, classy, and unique instrument with huge stage presence - totally makes you feel like a badass, too!

      I think my Explorer is totally worth every penny I paid for it. It's the best instrument I own, random RUclips viewer "1." That is why I posted my response. They don't need my defense and they aren't all great guitars. Mine just happens to be and the left-handed 2018 LP Tribute I played two weeks ago had a neck with a rough finish along one side but the damned thing sounded amazing and felt great.

    Enjoyed that. Just wish Gibson would put the jack socket on the edge rather than the front of the guitar. Also you can put a strap button on the upper horn instead of the neck heel, will help with SG neck dive problems - Tony Iommi managed it so that's good enough for me!

    I hope Lee reads this. I have to say the lessons with Justin have been paying off. I noticed it several times in the video. Maybe lessons, maybe more practice, maybe is was a I don't care attitude, maybe it was Maybelline. Anyway you played I think in this video better than Rob. Your not at fast as Rob, but most people aren't but you played with purpose and attention and you seemed really on today. Your a good player but this was done spot on and with a purpose today.

  • @samdelaney1134
    @samdelaney1134 6 лет назад +7

    I never thought I’d say this...but I found Lee’s playing in this video to much better than Robs...both still exceptional as per usually, but Lee killed it. I’ve been watching these guys since the early beginnings and holy balls, Lee has improved so much

    • @Jason-wk8oh
      @Jason-wk8oh 5 лет назад

      Rob is obviously a more technical player and he shreds. But I'm with Sam, the little bit that Lee played around 13:20-13:51 just had a more natural musical feeling to it. Not knocking Rob at all, he smokes. But sometimes less is more.

    I've been saying this each year, but these really should be 2 piece bodies rather than 3 piece. Seeing the cut lines under that natural finish looks horrible. If you're gonna do a 3pc body you should hide it under a finish

    • @paulsmith3583
      @paulsmith3583 6 лет назад +2

      To be honest, I'm not a fan of the extreme body shapes in a natural finish. The huge slab of plain looking wood just looks like a 1950's sideboard. I'd much rather see a nice paint job. A solid colour would do.

    I have 2018 explorer with a Granidillio fretboard and it sounds identical to the 2019 explorer with rosewood. I have compared them directly . I was going to trade my 18 explorer for a 19 model becuase I thought it would sound different or better with rosewood and I compared mine directly with a 19 model in a music shop and there was not noticeable difference. The 19 also had the upgraded cts pots and upgraded caps along with the rosewood board and it still did not sound better .

      I purchased both the Explorer and Flying V yesterday . 3,400.00 for both . I was hoping Gibson would get back to making the "Natural" type . They have a cool vintage vibe . The Explorer came today and it plays great ! The neck is more beefy than previous which I like cause I have big hands . I don't like the tone knobs but that's a easy fix . The case is cool looking but not well made . Mine has a little defect but nothing to do with the guitar . As of today , I recommend the Explorer !!!

    Good stuff guys.
    When I saw this video was uploaded, I snuck away from work just to check out the SG. My favourite guitar. Growing up I always wanted a Standard with the full pick guard in Heritage Cherry.
    After 10 or so years of saving (I work on a ridiculously low budget) I finally had enough to buy one. Ended up with a 2017 SG Standard in Cherry Burst, with the angel wing pickguard instead of the full one.
    So I had an SG that wasn't the colour or had the pickguard I wanted, but can't say I'm disappointed. Besides, mine has Classic 57's while the 2019 has the 490R and 490T pickups, and I like the 57's a lot more.
    Have to admit I was hesitant in buying a Gibson with all the comments going around about the QC and all that. Might be true, but then I'm probably one of the lucky ones, because my 2017 Standard is absolutely faultless. It's probably in my head more than based in reality, but when I compare my 2017 to a 2018 Standard, the 2018 pales in comparison too.
    I'll have to try out the 2019 though. Looks very good on the video. Won't be buying it anytime soon though - the price is a little spicy.

    Hello from Colorado, USA. Love the videos! Perhaps you could , when reviewing, show how the guitars sound with different genres of music. For instance, take the Flying V and play some blues, jazz, rock, and country. Showing the instruments versatility would be extremely helpful. Keep up the good work.

    I like the idea that gibson changes the pickups specs but everything else should consistent but variety in pickups isca good thing . Really I would love if Gibson offered a variety of pickup options for specific models. I would like to see the 50s standard les paul and 60s standard come with different pickup options to reflect the fact that 1957 to 1960 les Paul's had alot of variance in the paf pickups . Some original collection les pauls could have burstbucker 1 and 2 others 2 and 3 and maybe some with a 1 and 3 some with a BB2 and a BB2. A BB1 and A BB1. THEY could do some with a 57 classic set or a 57 classic and classic plus set or even better they could give you the option of choosing different pickup combos through your gibson authorized dealer as a sort of custom order . I do not particularly care for the Burstbucker 2 as a bridge pickup so I usually replace the BB1 and 2 sets for some duncans but if an original collection les paul came with a burstbucker 3 in the bridge I would leave the stock pickups in There some duncans I like a little better than a burstbucker 3 but I also think the burstbucker 3 is a great pickup and I like it enough that swapping it would not be worth the money for me .. The burstbucker 3 in the bridge of a les paul with a 57 classic neck makes for a unique and great sounding middle position even though on it's own the 57 is not my favorite neck pickup but if it was combined with a burstbucker 3 as a stock set I would not swap it becuase the middle position sounds fantastic .

    Korina is the US common name for a tree that is also known as 'superb terminalia'. I would rather have that as a name, imagine that, a superb bodied guitar.

    • @dylanlbdb
      @dylanlbdb 6 лет назад +1

      I may be wrong but as far as I know Gibson named it Korina to stop other manufacturers stealing the tone wood, however the actual name for this species of wood is Limba. Gibson uses White Limba in their "Korina" guitars, however you can also get Black Korina which has a beautiful streaky grain

    • @dylanlbdb
      @dylanlbdb 6 лет назад +1

      Although all "Korina" and. Limba are sub species of mahogany, as mahogany has many different species and variations

    • @celticbattlepants
      @celticbattlepants 6 лет назад

      As if common names were not confusing enough, why did they name the colour after another wood? Did Linnaeus do all his work for nothing??

    • @dylanlbdb
      @dylanlbdb 6 лет назад +1

      Just had to do a quick Google search on that name, but yeah I get what you mean, it seems like it now days, no body can use the correct name for anything, there always has to be some kind of branding behind it. Not saying anything bad about Gibson because I love Gibson, I enjoy the modern features and respect them but I love the traditionals

    Interesting to me that people call for innovation and point out that a say, 2017 strat is just another strat, but won’t even try something that doesn’t have “vintage” specs or is unique like these. When I read those I wonder what is left in terms of designs that utilize mahogany, maple and rosewood, alder-and 2 humbuckers. Changing the shape like this, and pickup switching options in new guitars from Gibson like on the newest standard-what is left to do that people will not say is too expensive? A question launched into the universe. These guitars sound great to me.

      I think its because people want the standard models to stay the same then have all the different colors and woods in a different model

    • @jasong546
      @jasong546 6 лет назад +1

      That’s probably true, yes. I just see the same ideas again and again, and imagine if I were a guitar maker, I would have a tough time pleasing everyone, because the players want new things but then go off about it when I make something different. Not all players of course. In 2019 you can have a Les Paul made with no new features if you want, so I don’t know what the complaints are truly about. No big deal though:)

By 1977 Punk had reached the sticks and I can recall reading in one of the 'Inkies' a band called the Sex Pistols signing a record deal outside Buckingham Palace on a folding table!? I'd never seen anything like them before. Older boys at school were more clued up than me and put me straight. Like John Peel, I became more a fan of the Damned than the Clash or the Pistols. When they split and reformed, with Captain Sensible on guitar, I bought Love Song and back then singles had "B-sides" and.....Noise Noise Noise blew my tiny freakin' mind! By the way Lee, korina is actually just a type of mohogany. The name korina was actually just made up by Gibson so that other companies wouldn't quickly find out what they were using. So you were kind of right all along.

    • @RicardoDiazHimself

    However, I dont know absolutely if that is true.
    I prefer it to standard mahogany because it's lighter and a little harder. Probably my favorite tone wood.
    Then again, since wood makes no difference in guitar tone I'm just another fool chasing unicorns, right?
