I got a feeling that 20-30 years ago that area was farmland. There's a reason why farmland is farmland. Flooding makes the soil rich, fertile and bountiful. Same problem has happened in the USA, especially the Mississippi River areas. 100+ years ago, farmhouses were built on high ground, with fields on the low laying areas. But in modern times with the expansion of population, Suburbs and riverfront homes have been built with no regard to 50, 100 or 200 year floods that could and do happen. Destroying property and lives.
