Yay to your first TWO watermelons! The only tip I would give is on the soil you used for overwintering peppers. It looks very dry and could be hydrophobic. I would water them from the top until the water fills the saucers on the bottom and let them sit that way for a few days. Then, check the soil a couple of inches from the top to make sure it isn't dry. If powder-dry, repeat the first watering technique. It may take several times watering this way to rehydrate the soil. If only slightly dry, you can water the way you normally would, but be extra careful not to let them get completely dried out. If the roots experience the extra-dry conditions, they may not recover.

So right! Terra Cotta pots are thirsty themselves and wick water out of your soil.
I gardened professionally for historic public properties on the east coast, zone 7b, and couldn't use Terra Cotta containers outside until i discovered moisture crystals. Mix them in the bottom third of the soil in your pot. They store water at root level.
It was plant insurance, so the gardener could have a weekend off from watering at work! 🎉🎉🎉

You barely need any light to over-winter peppers. If you want them to keep growing and producing, you can give them good light and water. If the goal is to keep them alive but in dormancy for next year's garden, a tiny bit of light and once a month watering is sufficient. I highly recommend Pepper Geek's Channel for more info

Your plants need a sunny area inside with good drainage plus allow the top soil to dry in between watering. First time I tried doing this I over watered my plants and they died, also don't worry they will lose some leaves because of transplant.

Here's a recipe for your green tomatoes. Green tomato Chutney and fried green tomatoes. I love fried green tomatoes as a side dish.
    CHUTNEY
    INGREDIENTS
    1x2x3x
1 Kg Green Tomatoes (2.2 lbs or about 6 cups / skinning is optional)
1 Kg Red Onions (2.2 lbs or about 6 cups)
150 g Raisins (5.2 oz or about 1 cup - you can use ordinary raisins or golden raisins)
    3 Garlic cloves
    1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper
    1/4 tsp Black pepper
    2 tsp Sea salt
500 g Brown sugar (2.5 cups - your choice of dark or light brown sugar)
1 Litre Malt Vinegar (32 fl oz or about 4.25 cups - vinegar with 5% acetic acid concentration)
    INSTRUCTIONS
Prepare the vegetables. Chop the tomatoes, onions, and raisins roughly and mince the garlic.

Place all ingredients into a stainless steel pan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to a vigorous simmer and leave uncovered. Depending on batch size and your appliance's heat, it can take one to three hours. Keep an eye on it and stir regularly.

The chutney is ready when it's reduced down and appears thick and brown.
    Fried Green Tomatoes
Chop the tomatoes. Using a serrated knife, cut 3 unripe green tomatoes crosswise into 1/4-inch thick slices.
Season the flour. Place 1/3 cup of the instant flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt, and 3/4 teaspoon paprika in a wide, shallow bowl or pie plate. Stir or whisk to combine.

Make the wet mixture. Place 3/4 cup buttermilk, 1 large egg white, and 1 1/2 teaspoons hot sauce in a second wide, shallow bowl. Whisk to combine.

Prepare the cornmeal. Place the remaining 1/3 cup instant flour and 3/4 cup finely ground cornmeal in a third wide, shallow bowl. Stir or whisk to combine.

Bread the tomato slices. Fit a wire rack inside a rimmed baking sheet. Dip each tomato slice in in the following order, making sure it is completly coated before dipping in the next mixture: flour mixture, buttermilk mixture, and cornmeal mixture.

Set the cornmeal coating. Place the breaded tomato slices on the rack in a single layer. Let sit so the coating sets while the oil heats.

Heat the oil. Heat 1/2 cup canola oil in a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until shimmering, about 5 minutes. The oil should sizzle immediately if you sprinkle flour into it.
Fry the tomatoes. Fry in batches of 4 to 5 tomatoes slices: Carefully add to the hot oil and fry, turning occasionally, until golden-brown, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transer the fried tomatoes to a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve warm the remoulade sauce. Serve the tomatoes immediately with the remoulade sauce if you want to use as appetizer.
    FOR THE REMOULADE SAUCE:
    • 1
    medium lemon
    • 1
    medium scallion (optional)
    • 2 sprigs
    fresh parsley
    • 1/2 cup
    mayonnaise, preferably Duke’s
    • 1 tablespoon
    whole-grain or Creole mustard
    • 1/2 teaspoon
    paprika
    • 1/2 teaspoon
hot sauce, such as Louisiana or Tabasco
    • 1/4 teaspoon
    garlic powder
    • 1/4 teaspoon
    kosher salt
    • 1 pinch
    cayenne pepper

I've overwintered my son's favorite tomato plant by rooting a side branch and planting it into a large 4 gallon planter. I also did a Bell Pepper plant for my husband, but I saved as many roots as possible when I dug it out and reduced the size by half. I put them in front of a large sunny window with a grow light. I also had some salad greens on the table with them. We had fresh salad for Christmas which made everyone's day. Just remember to pollinate the flowers as they are indoors.

Becky, what I did last fall to amend the beds was add three bags of manure, biotone, and blood meal. Then I covered the beds with the weed cloth. Come spring, I turned the beds, added Espoma cow manure, and in each hole I added a handful of biotone when I transplanted each variety.
Two weeks after planting, I watered with fish emulsion and I had an amazing garden and harvest this year. I think uncovering each bed, amendung it, and vovering them again will help feed the soil in the winter.

@@cheylingarber5886 You pick them when they're green. They can take a bit to ripen so you'll have fresh tomatoes in a couple weeks as they turn red. Leaving a bit of stem on is a good idea because the fruit will suck the nutrients from the attached stem to ripen itself, making it sweeter than if you didn't have a piece of stem attached. 👍

Hi Becky. I want to give you one suggestion that I've been using a lot myself. If I need to do something every few days or weeks, I put that in my phone calendar for a half year, so the phone gives off an alarm every time I need to do certain things. So, like watering your pepper plants, program it in your calendar so you will be remembered, not out of sight, out of mind. 😉

I wish I could get my hands on some green tomatoes! I love fried green tomatoes, but it's hard to come by green ones in the store. Very rarely do they have them.. I know a lot of people pickle them, as well. You've done such a great job with your garden.

I used zip tie style cable sorters/labels to label all my peppers when I pulled them off the ground, and put them loosely on the plants main stem.. no more forgetting what it is when repotting/replanting. labeling the pots did not work for me 🤣

I think your seed starting room would probably be better for your peppers, because they are supposed to be kept a little cooler than your living space might be. Also, they don't like soil that is wet all the time when over wintering. Maybe you can put a recurring event in your phone calendar to remind you to water once a week. I overwintered my peppers in my utility room which stayed about 60 degrees all winter. It is a dark room, so I used my grow lights on timers. They did fine. But I did end up with Fungus Flies!

We have overwintered most of our pepper & chilli plants. Some of our plants are about 7 years old, but we do not prune them before winter.... we prune them when they come out of dormancy. Sometimes they start to loose branches when you prune them before winter. We keep our pwppers in pots throughout winter and summer. We do not replant them as they might use more energy to reastablish like that. Just a note We live in South Africa so our winters are somewhat miled compaired to the US.

Save the seeds from the first melon you tried. Put them on a piece of paper or in a empty lid to dry them, so you can plant them in your garden again. And once you do seed savings you won't really need to buy seeds, unless you are buying a new type to try. But seed savings save you a lot of money in the end.
I learn this from another homesteader channel.
And they does the same thing with some of their plants end of season. They keep them in the green house and i enjoy watching them grow and produce beautiful peppers, tomatoes, limes, lemons etc and they are located in mississipi if i spell it right as i am canadian. Lol.
Btw what is the name of that melon?

SUBSCRIBER - Becky, you’ve done a spectacular job with your new garden this past summer. I plan to get into more gardening next summer as I work full time and was busy raising chicks this year. I hope you will be collaborating with your mom and cooking together again soon. Maybe for thanksgiving? I really enjoy how you and your mom prepare the big meals for the family gathering. 🤗

You can reuse good grades of landscape fabric with the holes drilled in them. You just have to use it for crops with that hole spacing. You don't have to replace the landscape fabric in the bed. I actually only use newspaper mulch because I don't like the shreds of plastic that remains when I use the cheaper landscape fabric. About 8 layers of newspaper, wet down works as a weed block for at least 3 months. It allows time for the crops to grow without competition from a lot of weeds. The paper breaks down and becomes part of the carbon in the soil. I am surprised you did not get much peppers out of the tabasco plants. They are very easy to grow for me and very productive. It may be because they don't produce peppers well in cold weather. They like it to be around 80-85 degrees. When it gets cold they stop making peppers. I grow peppers in pots all the time. 5 gallon is minimum, 10 gallon is better for the bigger plants like superchili, tabasco, and Thai.

You can make pickles from green tomatoes. You need to disolve 1 spoon of non-idiozed salt in 1 liter of water. Pour the hot water over the tomatoes already arranged in large jars (over 5 pounds), close the lids and wait for 2 weeks before you open the first jar. For more taste you can add in every jar garlic, dried dill, celery leaves, thyme, wild horseradish (it helps with the preservation for a longer time).

Pepper plants : from what I’gather, they should be in a cool but frost free rom. Grow room for me. Not a lot of extra light needed. Perhaps set smartphone calendar reminders. Or when you use your freeze dryer you’ll think of the plants.
