Hope you get that Yamaha figured out Joe. Keep up the great work. No matter the weather or circumstances you put in a lot of effort to save these old machines. Appreciate you 🤙🏻
If you have to go over three turns with the fuel screw, you need to bump up the pilot jet. These oversquare high compression four strokes will get super hot if it’s sitting idling. They will actually boil the fuel in the tank if they don’t get enough air moving(riding very slowly) to keep everything cool.
Even Stevie Wonder can see that bikes running real lean
@@benny85361983 he’s not wrong at all, no bike should sit there and just idle, if you have around a 98ish millimeter piston sitting there and the antifreeze isn’t getting any air to cool off. It’s gonna over heat
@@braydenburkett3452 I'm not sure of the point your tring to make but he's way up north in the snow and bike has an electric fan to kick on when coolant temperature get hot and a water pump circulating coolant but that has nothing to do with header glowing it's doing that because not enough fuel in mixture
@@benny85361983 no I understand why you mean, and it takes quite a bit for the fan to turn on, I was chasing my tail on my 07 tuning it and any time I got it running good or in the general area, after a few minutes of idling my pipe would glow… not trying to show you up or anything. Sorry about that man
My yz 450 was the same way. You had to keep her moving or she gets hot. Ultimately the reason I got rid of it because I only ride woods most of the time
24:28 T0 24:38 the front left wheel is locked solid while you are riding.
Careful with the aftermarket fuel screw at 4.5 turns. They have been absolutely known to fall out when turned that far. Look it up. Best is to bump the pilot to a 55 (which is huge, I know), and then turn the fuel screw back in.
Yeah that's the plan. Definitely a huge pilot.
Voltage regulator is bad . That is the best running bike on the channel so far !
You don't have a working charging system, it is running on battery voltage until the battery can no longer power the electronics. It should be of no surprise the radiator fan doesn't have enough voltage to work and it begins to overheat. Stop riding it until you have a solid 14+ volts at the battery while running.
Joe put a bigger pilot jet in your carb , you shouldn't have to turn fuel screw out that far
Before you go pulling it apart to check head gasket go and buy yourself a test kit that tests if combustion gases are in coolant.
Your water pump spins so that will also cause the water to push out of the fill port when you're reving it.
Same thing a car does when you have the cap off and rev it
I have same wheeler with bige bore. I installed a cbr 600 battery and that is 180 cca. And also bolt on battery charger for better charging. There is a little cutting by the battery area to fit the bigger battery.
That glowing pipe issue had me stumped years ago. Congrats on figuring it out!!!
To rich
My friend has some problem turned out the timing was out a tooth
If it’s just sitting there and idling for more than 2 minutes and still gets red it’s not good but it’s normal, yfz’s run very very hot and don’t like to sit and idle… they like to scream
Bro I watch your videos all the time and can’t wait till the next one comes out keep up the great work you’re doing and hope you and your family are doing great love Malcolm from uk 🇬🇧 my favourite utube channel love it bro 😎
In the previous video of the yfz450 I had written to you to open the mixture screw to 3 1/2 turns, it is good that you open it more and the problem improved
Like you said, People say that a hot pipe is normal for that machine. That shouldn't be normal. That's just bad design.
When you drop spark plugs down the hole like you did there is a chance of knocking out the gap clearance. You should have placed a length of 1/2 inch fuel line on the end of the spark plug and turned the plug in. the same for removal. This also works on the HEMI engines!
Great job joe your getting ther mate it's defo a cracking quad sounds brilliant pity about the problem at the end but you will sort it mate take care and stay warm 👍👌👍🔧🔧🔧
31:04 there’s a big spark and smoke coming from the left side of the handle bars
Huge ⚡️
Good eye
yeah how did he not see or hear that???
Just a sun glare with a coincidental pop in the audio.
You have to account for three things, Elevation-Temperature-jets, lets say you have proper jetting already. When its colder weather you have to add about a quarter to half turn on fuel screw rich, Listen to the rpms very closely after each slight turn on the screw, Find the happy middle point, where its not too extremely high/fast but a nice solid idle, Your pilot jet is for idle/low rpm, Your Main is for 70% to 100% throttle, if its spitting and popping depending on the color of flame it is either too rich or lean. Only turn and adjust fuel screw when the motor is at operating temp. Start up procedure,(cold start only)*,( Key on, Ignition on, Pull choke out, Blip throttle once to get fuel in carb, turn on bike, leave choke in for 5-10seconds, Turn off choke, after once warm adjust fuel screw. Keep a Battery junior 800 Battery Maintainer on your battery so it always starts up 1-2nd time, When in storage for long time and u have the gas turned off for carb during storage, turn it back on, then on cold start procedure blip the throttle 2 times and let it wake up to its normal idle
O yes, I really enjoy the videos, keep up the Amazing AWESOME job and content.
Good to see someone from Wisconsin doing great things!
Great video. I have a 2006 yfz 450 that I need to start working on and your videos will get me motivated. Just an fyi, you need to install a kickstart b/c the batteries suck.
I have an 08 KFX450 I’ve had for 7-8 months been having the same starting issues..I’ve done everything the same as you so I’m gonna take your lesson and use it and pull apart my kill switch and clean it
Checking back in with an update. Took the switch apart today took sandpaper to all the contacts cleaned it all up real nice..didn’t help a dang thing with mine 😢 only thing I have left to do is replace or rebuild the starter
Man you made me cringe when dropped the spark plug down the hole, the socket is supposed to hold onto it. Not drop it. You can mess the gap that easily. Love the content. Keep it up.
Me too! Ugh.
Really hope it sorts itself out, seems like you really have a lot of fun on it
Have the same quad 2004 yfz450 automatic decompressor was my problem but mine turned over a little bit faster since I had stock compression ratio . I heard it is a common problem on the yfzs... you can alsow put a kickstart mecanism on it if you dont want to change the cam . Nice video man
If you suspect a short, measure the current instead of the voltage when attempting to start it. If you measure the current from the battery and the current going to the starter, the difference in going somewhere. Without the head lights that should be no more than 2-3 amps.
What a beautiful quad!.. she sounds amazing man 👌🏻!!
When are you gonne do dirtbike projects? Love thid content. Keep up the goof work 💪💪👌👌
Some engines do not charge the battery at idle. Try revving it up and see what the voltage does. I doubt the stator is shot.
Correct! Most engines actually won’t. I check it at 3k rpm
Awesome job I just learned something new thanks
Great video as always screw that shit man learning experience working on stuff and your good at what your doing keep videos coming bro sick 4wheeler
As always great content Joe
Back in 2007 I bought a brand new raptor 700 and it would do the same thing with the coolant, the stock pipe would also glow red not long after starting. Not sure if this will help you or not, love the videos man.
Front left wheel locked up 23.30
Loving the long vids!
When you change oil filter write the date on it, even with fuel filter. Always enjoy the vids, keep em coming. 🍻
That's pretty crazy that coolant is doing what it's doing. I would suggest maybe a catch can or something? The high compression and vibrations is just blowing it around
Love the yfz 450 my favorite quad not just because I own one 😂 great video keep up the good work bro
God damn buddy just ain’t having much luck rn lol I feel ya you’ll get it
Hey Joe, does that front left wheel spin freely? Noticed it sliding through the snow, at one point, while the right one was spinning.
That’s why it was Stalin out so much
if your fuel screw is out more than about 3 turns, thats an indication to increase the size of the pilot.
Enjoying this quad .!
Great video man
If you have to pull the head off for sure check that it's not warped. A mirror and valve grinding compound will show if it is. I used to have one mounted on an old counter top for support. If warped tape a sheet of 400 to the mirror and be patient.
Love this stuff
I just realized your front left tire wasn’t even spinning after you tried to restart it the first time..the yfz is a very high maintenance bike legit so if just the smallest thing is out of whack she won’t run right….
Get a Noco boost plus jump starter it the best one to Carry around I always used that for my truck and bikes and it fit in your pocket
Don't worry about the pipe glowing. My dad has one, it will pretty much always do it
hey man, do what you do everyday just dont vlog it, but was watching this and noticed you checked coolant while bike was hot/warm, looked like that anyway, pressure will be created when its hot from being hot and water pump forcing coolant around, you open that up hot and thats the weakest leak its gonna come out there, id re check the system while the bikes cold, if it still sprays out of fill area when cold then its most likely pressure in system, if it doesnt i dont think itd be head gasket, plus it didnt look like it was dropping white clouds of smoke. Just thought id throw this in the mix so you dont have to rip head off if you dont “have” to. Goodluck!
The cinematic shots were nice!
Pretty amazing how good it runs and how quick it it forest up when ele trial is all good huh. Lol the smallest connection on the quad. Of course it was lol
THE ABSOLUTE NUMBER ONE QUESTION ON THE FACEBOOK GROUP FOR THESE IS “why is my pipe glowing red at idle?” Number two question is “why am I overheating??” YOU CANNOT LEve these bikes at idle more than 2-3 minutes. No modern four stroke should be left at idle but Yamahas especially overheat fast
Finally a win I'm glad to see that hopefully the Quadzilla can be sorted out and fixed which we all know you're going to do love the content keep it up
There should be a voltage regulator on the quad that regulates the voltage! Look for it somewhere on the frame Square with wires and cooling fins..
rebuilt my sxf 250 and the old head gasket was 2 metal plate gasket and the new one was 3 plate one. The new did not work, changed it to the old one and works like it should.
I think it's more the water pump buddy you would need to fill the rad full and run it and if its fizzy like pop is then yes but it will foam and bubble reving it like that so just a quick check will sort it 👍
check your auto decompression stuck thermostat. also make sure you bleed the coolant system any air will make it over heat
Love the video's! If not charging it would be voltage regulator.
Not sure if you noticed joe but the front left wheel wasn’t spinning just after you got her started in the snow with the screwdriver in your hand 👍🏼
I noticed that also.. The front left wheel was locked up..
Yep. Judging by the baldness of that tire, I would guess the brake is hanging up on that side once the caliper gets hot.
Oh yeah good eye. I didn't notice that. I will look into that issue as well, thanks!
@@2vintage most welcome man. Keep up the good content 🤘🏼
Dune cupped rears will hook up like crazy.. fun in snow!!!
You are an amazingly fun mechanic
You've got way more patience with those things than I do. I would have that sob in a creek bed in flames with my insurance company on the phone filing a claim already haha
this is more like the real life shit that happens !!! had a few of those days just lately. sometimes you have to put the tools and toys away and go and do something else. how you are messing around with bikes in that temperature is a testament to your dedication its either that or your just nuts😀
Very informative when you explain this thing goes in here like that. Need more detail 😂
In my experience, those kind of batteries are junk. The best ones I’ve found so far are Yuasa brand sealed gel batteries. They last a long time and perform well even in the cold. They are a bit pricey though.
Actually I found that a Duracell gel agm battery is the best battery life and instant power when you need it but the problem with these batteries is they need a recharge every 1-3 months
I agree. My stock yausa lasted almost 8 yrs .
i ordered a duracell sealed gel for my ktm and it works great! more CCA than stock and only like 30 bucks
@@bmbott123 my Yuasa battery is the original one in my 2001 jet ski, still going strong.
Bro that pop at 31:04 though 😬.. u could even hear it on the video.. anyway thanx for the videos.. u one bad dude and your videos keep getting better.. did u ever find out what brand big bore is in that quad..? I got a buddy of mine that wants me to install one on his 06 yfz450... also I just finished building my very first yfz450 (had bad piston n cylinder /broken valves) any way at first it was leaking coolant (after first start up)and then after it stopped I think I overflowed it.. but now runs good (semi good lol only choke on 🤪 got adjust carb) anyway my headlights won't turn on i checked a bulb looks good and when I hit the switch to turn them on i hear a click sound coming from maybe area around cdi I think there's the rectifier or some electric box.. so I assume they are trying to switch on but nothing.. what would you check first.. btw mine is an 07..also I gotta mention that my light switch is broken from the part were you switch from engine run or stop...might that be it? Once again u one bad dude...hopefully you can do a raptor 80 soon. 😃...
Yfz450 power brother 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼 some times there a headache but best bike in my opinion
I’ve never clicked on a video so fast haven’t finished it yet I’ll comment when done
Try changing the voltage regulator for the charging issue
The coolants system has an air pocket, you have to let the bike run and get up to temp with the radiator cap off. That is the whole reason for the coolants looking like it has air in it
10:18 My ears lurked up when I heard the sound of the that exhaust!!
You have to rev the bike up to 4k rpm in order to test the charging system. At a steady 12.8v at idle thats good
Tons of power in this thing! As it stalls lol
Always start with the easy stuff.
the fix is always the last thing you find broken lol
No joke, I was gonna mention the decompression mechanism until u said u had it figured out with the wiring.
The earlier yfz450 won't charge unless the headlights are on or you install resistors in the headlight connector's o ya welcome to the constance valve adjusting on the yfz that why it has the quick release fuel tank I finally got tired of messing with my old yfz and I traded it for a 421 cub banshee
My yfz wouldn't charge at idle
Cut out the divider in the rear of the plastic and you can install a 660 Raptor battery in its place
Correct me if I’m wrong joe, but I think I seen an ark of some sort right at the first bend on the header at exactly 11:27 in your video, lemme know what you think or I’ve I’m just seeing things! Love the videos btw, I never miss a vid!!
Very hard to tell! Thanks for watching!
Yes I’m having a problem finding the correct size rectifier also
As I said 2 videos ago.. That coolant hose is basically joined to that header. Which is boiling your antifreeze. Connect your air filter box to the muffler n see how your fuel mileage is ?!?! Cold air intake not hot for increased fuel economy and power. Lower coolant temps= lower engine temps, starts cooler easier in turn makes for a more efficient engine, as well as makes more power. Just sayin..
Just find headlights add them on and that'll solve the charging issue. Instead of the kit. Plus itll probably be cheaper and you'll need headlights anyway.
That is true, I'll look for some stock head lights.
Your crank might be bad. It cranking over slowly could possibly be a crank with a tight spot.
Check ignition timing can cause headers to glow red ,not sure if it's the same as foxbody mustangs buy I have had a similar situation and it was the timing
When it first cranked over slow a stuck compression release was my first thought
RM stator and rectifier. Stock won’t do anything with the headlights off.
That’s so funny lmaoo always something stupid and I seen the front left wheel lock up or something after the first ride at your parents
That's why it's running like that. With that battery not charging all those electronics to be able to work like they should worh the proper volts. Maybe that's why it popped really bad the first time you really laid into it with the throttle.
Its a 05 engine im sure the original stator is still in it its done or about to be done. You gotta ride that shit load it up to check your plug color. Worst thing to do is letting it sit there and idle. First start of the day 3 minutes tops for warm up.
Could be the regulator/rectifier not usually the stator
Lol it’s always the last thing you look at bc it’s the least thing that would make sense keep it up dude
$5 for a spark plug isn't bad I had a 96 RM250 a couple years back and the factory plug was $30. Lol
You got ripped off dude 🤣
@@wisecampmotorcycles8258 Nope not at all. The oem spark plug the 1996 RM 250 calls for is a special plug and is around $30. Don't believe me? Look it up. You can run cheaper ones if desired though.
@@Aint9sk8rd9 Can you tell me the brand name and spark plug number, I'd like to know what's special about it.
@@wisecampmotorcycles8258 NGK R6918B7. They explained it to me at the dealer but this was a while back so i don't remember the details.
It's just called a racing plug dude, nothing special about it, I've used those heaps in my two strokes. I didn't notice any difference, in anything about that plug, except the electrode is smaller. Seriously man, don't waste your money, just buy NGK BPR7ES , you can get a whole box for the price of one "special plug" it's just a scam, believe me, I've been riding Two strokes for over 40 years.
You don’t need a bigger battery. Look up rm stator and rectifier. You can get a car battery and it still won’t be enough because the battery is not charging.
Bring back ya old simple yz490! Your getting there tho !
Welcome to the yfz450 that's why everything on it is quick release your under the gas tank more than you are on the seat and that's no joke
Get a anti gravity battery for it man. Best in the game
You need to get some proper ventilation in your shop if you're going to run motors inside. Carbon monoxide poisoning is not a joke. The single best thing I did in my shop was get a circulation fan and motor out of an old furnace, cut a hole in my wall and added some vent flaps on the outside. It can completely clear the air out in my shop in a minute or so.
They all glow red my friends 08 does it and my 09 did it too with the stock pipe
24:30 why isn't the left front tire rotating? Sorry, if I missed it, I skipped around.
I wonder if the oil modd is done on this bike I know that could take the engine out and sometimes even the cases
Yamaha! O how great early model yfz wiring and design. Good luck man. The early model yfz’s are trash in my opinion I’ve learned to stay far I’ve had 4 of em😂
Most atvs dirt bikes and motorcycles don’t charge the battery. The bikes stator is meant for the spark plug that’s it unless it designed to run lights.
On some of these machines they won't run correctly with the battery disconnected. So it makes me wonder if the headlight wiring helps to regulate charging.
