I watched other chris voss interviews and i love how calm he seems. When we think of charismatic people, we think of extroverted people, and people with a loud personality. But i see chris voss as very charismatic because hes seem calm, genuine and interesting

I just ordered his book as well for myself and my sister. keep up the great work and thanks for doing an awesome job and putting out great content.

Yeah. But he got sidetracked and Voss never finished his bank hostage story. How he got the guy to give up! A very common interviewer mistake. But damn! I’ve heard bits and pieces of that story on other videos but never the resolution/conclusion. I hope it’s covered in the book. It’s taking me a while to get to it.

Back in 92 when me and my crew held up a bank my negotiator had verbatim the same attitude ans slickness as Christopher did. He felt me. He was even from the same city I was from. He helped me literally to find sobriety and Christ. Alex Fernandez FBI. When I was locked up doing my 10 yr bit... He came and visited me in my 3rd year and said he would speak at my parole hearing though I didnt get released WHEN he came to the 8 yr parole hearing and after previous talks Alex really made amark on me. These are talented men boyee. Peace.

I love this interview because I’ve been watching Chris Voss’s talks and about 85% of them are the same. I listen to the same core outline of his talk to hear the other nuggets of wisdom. I’m about 3/4 of the way through his book and I have no doubt that I’ll listen to it a number of times. It’s rare to find a speaker / author that has so much to learn from.
Voss is a big dog. I’ve listened to the book 3 times and still pick up new stuff every time, this interview had a few black swans in it as well, solid gold. I’ve gotten a raise in pay from tips in his book, everybody thought how I asked for my raise was the most intelligent thing ever and all I did was take notes from never split the difference. I'm just a small time carpenter/contractor but on the few occasions I've had to hire a short term worker I learned to tell potential employee the following: " This job is going to be tough. I'm going to work you harder than you've probably ever worked before in your life or ever will work again and if I were you I wouldn't work for me, I'd keep looking for another job. And not only do I not pay much, I'm going to start you off at minimum wage. If you prove that you can do what you say you can do, I'll give you raises and even make them retroactive if you are making me good money. (the only reason I'm hiring you is to make me money. I'm not hiring you so that you can have a job, the only reason I want you to work for me is to make me money) I don't want you to waste your or my time by staying at the same productivity/pay level. Despite the very hard work for low pay, I'll make you these two promises: I will teach you and train you and tell you everything that we are doing and why and maybe all the other ways I've tried doing it that didn't work so well. You will learn more with me in a week or two than you will in maybe a year with another contractor. Second, I will never yell at you or belittle you. Ever. I may get more impatient the 4th or 5th time I tell you how to do something but I will never yell at you. This job will, however, be intense at times. I will be very intense at times but if it gets too intense, just say the word and I'll change things up. If possible, we'll go do something else for a minute or two to break the tension. In addition, I will never have you do something I'm not already doing. You will have to keep up with me whether it's in mud and rain or crawling under a dusty house on our bellies." My encapsulated principle is this: you can do almost anything to a person, put them through almost anything if you tell them before hand and they voluntarily accept it. I over play it, tell them (obviously) how bad it'll be and it becomes a challenge. People perform at their highest level when they are facing an overpowering challenge. And I do look them straight in the eye and tell them "good job" when (and only when) they have earned it.
in other words; "GIVE ME A MILE AND ILL GIVE YOU A INCH IN RETURN BUDDY, ATLEAST IM HONEST!" lol thats insulting. if i heard that i would be like wtf this dude has memorized a book!, and told me that i will work my ass off for nothing just to make this man more money in return for this guys knowledge and being treated well?, unless....i just happen to want to be taught everything you know *BUT* you are nothing special like you just said ( small time, money hungry, NEEDY!) aka not a successful carpenter so ur your knowledge is worthless even if i loved carpentry, unless i am motivated by something much worse like poverty then i would take the job if i had no other option cause i need to survive, im stating it as it is.

If you actually followed through on the teaching part, it would be worth it and I would accept the job if that is the field I wanted to be in. But I would not accept the job just because you were up front about how hard it will be. Simply telling someone up front about the difficulty of something doesn't make it a challenge worth taking. If they get something out of it, like learning a valuable skill with the ability to make more money then the challenge is worth it. That was the point Mr. Voss was making.

I bought this book awhile ago when it caught my eye at the bookstore. I've read it cover to cover and still pick it up regularly to review the sections that I've highlighted. Even though I've already read it, having watched this interview and seeing/hearing Chris Voss exemplify the lessons discussed in the book has really helped to strengthen my understanding of the concepts. This book has really changed my life personally and professionally. I encourage anyone who is on the edge about this book to buy it and pay the full retail price for it as the cost is miniscule compared the value of the content it offers.

I have used some of these tactics on men, because I find most men I encounter tend to highly underestimate women. Car buying, real estate investing, construction estimates, even security services, the list is endless...Instead of getting visibly flustered or mad I use their ignorance and ego in my favor to generate a better deal. I just stay very cordial, but firm in my position. I'm entering into real estate investment as a long term business plan and appreciate these nuggets of wisdom. It is entrenched with men who still undervalue women as strong negotiators. I never go into a deal without having done extensive research. It's like the joke when a man gets lost because he refuses to look at a map and ask for help, but the woman finds her way because isn't afraid to appear weak by doing both.
after listening to the 50mn Google talk he did 2 years ago where he kinda sat painfully through an interview carried on by a nice but somewhat teenage girl with not much experience, or so it seemed, I have to say that this face to face is sooo much better ! you kept the dialog alive, listening but keeping the questions flowing nicely without being a bully. Great interaction despite the fact that Chris was clearly sick but stayed upbeat.

Wow, wow, wow, Voss's voice puts me at incredible ease. As a security officer at a Casino, I spend a great of time negotiating with petty criminals. I also have the intention of leaving the corporate world to start my own business (completely unrelated) and I have no formal business training. This vid is worth hours in class. I've always enjoyed this podcast. Great platform, good questions and fantastic people on the show. My only pet peeve is when Lewis asks a question and someone doesn't answer within .03 seconds because they're thinking of an intelligent answer, Lewis send a flurry of follow up as if they aren't understanding the initial question.
Lewis, what an amazing interview with Chris Voss. I love his calmness and gentle manner, a real education in gentle but powerful psychology. I like him alot! The late night FM DJ voice really helps too ;-). Just off to buy his book!
36:00 I've seen this strat in action before :) Some lad tried to get answers from a professional forum and it was silent. Noone helped him. He created a wrongly formulated statement in an another thread and all the pros EGOs got hurt and he got all the answers with all the why's and how's from all the tops of the forum.
Hands down one of the best books on ANY subject in business I've ever read. Chris Voss is a BEAST and his book has so, so many really practical, easy to apply take-aways. I've given this book to all of my friends and it's changed their lives.
I used the line “it seems like you’re powerless here” on my cell phone carrier. I ended up getting an extra 20gb of data for the same I’m paying today. Awesome technique. I was giving up and about to end the call with them when I tried it.

A long time ago, before i ever read any book on negotiating, i bought a fridge and washing machine from the same place. But i kept asking for more since i was buying 2 things. Free delivery was offered straight away. I then got a kettle thrown in. Lastly i got cutlery thrown in but the guy was angry when he said it and i knew i hit my limit and agreed. Which was great as it was a new house and that saved me a lot of money

I find this topic really interesting. But Chris has such a soothing voice I find myself wanting to take a nap. 🤣 The hostage role play was really cool to watch though. I actually wish that Chris would've gone through the role play again saying how he would've handled it more in depth.

Wow, wow, wow, Voss's voice puts me at incredible ease. As a security officer at a Casino, I spend a great of time negotiating with petty criminals. I also have the intention of leaving the corporate world to start my own business (completely unrelated) and I have no formal business training. This vid is worth hours in class. "How am I supposed to do that?'. Another tool in my verbal judo

I've seen this book everywhere and didn't think it was worth picking up until hearing this podcast. Just got the audiobook
I've always enjoyed this podcast. Great platform, good questions and fantastic people on the show. My only pet peeve is when Lewis asks a question and someone doesn't answer within .03 seconds because they're thinking of an intelligent answer, Lewis send a flurry of follow up as if they aren't understanding the initial question.
Lewis, what an amazing interview with Chris Voss. I love his calmness and gentle manner, a real education in gentle but powerful psychology. I like him alot! The late night FM DJ voice really helps too ;-). Just off to buy his book!
36:00 I've seen this strat in action before :) Some lad tried to get answers from a professional forum and it was silent. Noone helped him. He created a wrongly formulated statement in an another thread and all the pros EGOs got hurt and he got all the answers with all the why's and how's from all the tops of the forum.
Hands down one of the best books on ANY subject in business I've ever read. Chris Voss is a BEAST and his book has so, so many really practical, easy to apply take-aways. I've given this book to all of my friends and it's changed their lives.

A long time ago, before i ever read any book on negotiating, i bought a fridge and washing machine from the same place. But i kept asking for more since i was buying 2 things. Free delivery was offered straight away. I then got a kettle thrown in. Lastly i got cutlery thrown in but the guy was angry when he said it and i knew i hit my limit and agreed. Which was great as it was a new house and that saved me a lot of money
