Nice! I bet all your wires fit into the box nicely too. Small details and the things you can't see or Very few people will ever notice is true craftsmanship.
The why's and how's you figure out as you revitalize a box built by someone else, is the icing on the cake when doing a project in respect of the original creator... much more enjoyable than just building another one... justice served, Mr. John! Good Stuff Sir!!!
What an astoundingly beautiful job. A very timely video for me, as I am refinishing my grandmother's cedar chest currently. My daughter will have it in her bedroom, maybe eventually her child will own it.
John, you’re such a show off. “And now I’ll make a leather handle”. 2 seconds later a beautiful master learherworkers piece is presented. Not only that, you kept the box in vintage condition and something that the original builder would be in awe of. Kudos to you.
You handled that project well. Great idea on the handle and keeping it as original as possible. The oil looks nice and bluing the hardware worked out nicely.
You hit that one right outta the park. In fact it still hasnt landed. Wow that old box looks great! It still has its old vintage look and solid as ever. Great tip on the dollar store mats, I would never have thought about that.
I so enjoyed this project. Everything from the hardware to the handle to the finishing made this a great tribute to the original maker. And…you clocked the screws! 👍
So many of us (me included) end up letting our skills atrophy. These types of videos are great reminders to get back in the shop, garden, house etc., and just do something. Thanks John.
I don't think "infamy" is the best word to describe how the box will live in our collective memory, but you did a fantastic job on it! 👍😁👍. Your approach to this project was well thought out and executed! Well done indeed! 👍😁👍
Very nice project John. Very cool handle. It really adds to the look of the box. Little subtle touches like clocking the screws also adds to the look.👍🎥🇺🇸
Mr. D would be proud. The middle initial in a monogram is the surname if it is larger than the first and third letters. The box looks great! Mr. D was talented. He would have had to predrill each nail to prevent splitting. If he managed to build the box without predrilled holes then he was really talented. Bob
Very happy to see this old box saved and not ending up in a fire or garbage! It meant something to the one who built it and they put their time and care into it to hold maybe something special to them. Very nice!
You nailed another one. Balancing the finish and the hardware restored the original classic look. Definitely harder than making from scratch. I picked up some good tips as always.
Oh man, I had to rewind because I was doing something else when you said you did a mystery braid and my cheapo PC speakers made it sound like you did a "Mystery Date". LoL. Milton Bradley game of the 60s&70s. Great job on the box, you did some honor to whomever made it. My grandfather apparently used a wooden fruit crate to store his small set of tools and all I know is grandma kept it under the shelves in our basement and if anyone needed a hammer, small saw, screwdriver or egg beater drill, we'd be told to go look in the tool "box". Which is to say that not every box has to have a lid (or one that sounds so cool when you close it). Peace!
Nice old box! Everyone in the early and mid 20th century made a box or something like it in wood shop. Now thats all gone, but I remember my dad and his family, they all had boxes and treasure chests etc. As a kid I loved them but could NEVER touch them. Now I have a few of them after they passed. I'm a metal guy so I bought my kids all handmade oak boxes, jewelry chests, toy box, etc. Its important kids have a special place to put things and Ive always encouraged that.
Just the right amount of restoration, in my opinion. It looks great and that braided leather handle really topped it off. Another great job and fantastic video.
What an excellent restoration. Nicely done without over doing it. The original maker would be very proud. And cool braiding on the handle. There’s not much you don’t do!!
Boxes are fantastic once you start looking at them closely and they get a hold of you. There is so much to see auntie box I wouldn’t empty box. What a fantastic restoration of a box I’ve got so many to do here to work on it’s going to take all of my retirement to refurbish them all, but I am surely looking forward to it fantastic box I’ve got a handle to fix as well but I fix it a little different to yours. I’d love you to show us the breeding of that handle
Came out great. I like that you preserved the original character. Now its clean and has a nice functional handle. I saw a nice box kite in the collection...
John: Wanted to leave an 'Atta Boy' for the sensitive and respectful job you did on this box. Your work really gives honor to the original maker! I'm especially pleased that you were able to preserve the lettering. Unless I miss my guess, the second letter is slightly larger than the other two. If so, this may be the maker's monogram, not just his initials. His first initial would have been "H', his middle initial an 'A', and his last name started with 'D'. It would amazing if someone recognizes their ancestors work! Thanks for the finer work on this one!
Hey Scoutctafter, Love your channel a buddy of mine introduced me to your channel a few months ago. I love old tools. I've been a woodworker all my life, love making furniture. I'm going to try my hand at tool restoration. I bought a 1x30 sander at Harbor freight last week thinking I could use it for metal, not so I kept getting small electric shocks when I touched the frame. I was doing Lineman's pliers. Upon further reading the owners manual it specifically says only for wood. Thought you might want to pass this along to your audience. Keep up the great work! Phil Candando Jamison, Pa
Fantastic job, worthy of the original owner and now you. As a guy who has restored a number of antiques with leather, I always recommend old leather belts for short narrow pieces. They are cheap at used-item stores. Your leatherwork came out perfect. Great show, as always. Wayne out West.
What a great restoration, just perfect, probably what Mr. H.D.A would have wanted. I’ve got to check out the leather braiding, a really nice touch for the handle. Thanks again!
Gratitude to the days when craftsman used scraps to make things. Family men rarely spend money or time on them self! Great work really like the leather handle!
I have a few saws that didn't make the grade in the restore process. The spring steel that they are made of makes excellent scrapers. That looks like orange crate wood. The narrow slats like the top and bottom are made of made great boxes and were planed smooth on all 4 sides. Dad made a model boat from that kind of wood and powered it with a clock mechanism. Nice work on the restore. I like Murphy's Oil Soap too. We used it on the hardwood floors in the bookstore. Most things come packed in Styrofoam or cardboard. Doesn't hold a candle to a good wooden box.
I should have known better, but I was concerned when you said you were going to use a scraper and remove the finish, but you managed to keep the aged vintage look really well despite refinishing it. I particularly like the blued hinges and brass catches and of course the braided leather handle. Ahh the "Mystery braid", reminds me of when we were in the Scouts and we had a leather Woggle for the scarf/neckerchief and kids used to fiddle and undo the braid, then not be able to get it back together properly !
My dad and grandfather used to use a piece of window pane glass as a wood scraper works great and lasts forever and if you hit a nail either throw in away or cut 1/4” off and you’re back in business
@ScoutCrafter ok I admit I never saw the link! I've watched it twice now and still can't quite get my head around it. Guess I'm gonna have to find some scrap leather and have a go!
Hi John, very nice job on the box. Love the braiding of the handle. I’ve seen tutorials on this on Weaver Leather videos but haven’t tried it myself. The bluing on the latches was perfect. Gave them a more golden aged look instead a bright shiny appearance that didn’t look appropriate for the age of the box. Old Glory flying proudly reminds me of how TV stations used to sign off at night. Whoops, guess I’m showing my age. Old Timer and proud of it. Best Regards, John
Oeh I felt that in my gut with the scraper.. . I really look forward to the box tutorial because I struggle a lot making those. I hope its on soon! Great job on the box, you really did it a lot of justice.
Well dam crafterman you kept the patina…so proud…a tear to my eye…( not really ) but you did the box good…just a great job …the patinaites are dancing in the streets…( could happen )…very nice…🖖🏻
What a wonderful tribute to the man who made it. Your restoration is simply outstanding! The handle braiding was a great idea and I really like the look of the bluing on the hardwear. Thank you to you and Bruce for this tutorial.
Beautiful Mate!! H.D.A is smiling down on you!!☻
Nice job! As a former electrician I always clocked the switch and receptacle plate screws. Attention to detail is one facet of craftsmanship.
Nice! I bet all your wires fit into the box nicely too. Small details and the things you can't see or Very few people will ever notice is true craftsmanship.
Man, that is a beautiful box but I gotta say I feel cheated about that braided handel! You gotta show us how you done that, it looks great.
The why's and how's you figure out as you revitalize a box built by someone else, is the icing on the cake when doing a project in respect of the original creator... much more enjoyable than just building another one... justice served, Mr. John! Good Stuff Sir!!!
Dollar Tree mats❗️I used those for toolboxes 🧰 too👍
What an astoundingly beautiful job. A very timely video for me, as I am refinishing my grandmother's cedar chest currently. My daughter will have it in her bedroom, maybe eventually her child will own it.
Well done, the extra detail of clocking the screws Perfection.👍
Wow, it came out amazing. Leather work is a whole new field , looking forward to the series of making wood boxes.
The box turned out beautiful! That braided leather handle is impressive!
Excellent job John! HDA would be proud to see this piece live on.
The box is looking so nice now! 🛠👍😊
Love old wooden boxes. I’ve done a few ,even a wooden cigar box. Great for miscellaneous drill bits
John, you’re such a show off. “And now I’ll make a leather handle”. 2 seconds later a beautiful master learherworkers piece is presented. Not only that, you kept the box in vintage condition and something that the original builder would be in awe of. Kudos to you.
Thank God for RUclips tutorials! I haven’t made a mystery braid since Boy Scouts and I forgot how! 😂👍
SC Nice job! You left the basic integrity of the old box while making it usable once again. You did a great job on the handle as well!
So many of us (me included) end up letting our skills atrophy. These types of videos are great reminders to get back in the shop, garden, house etc., and just do something. Thanks John.
Ian- Work and Family always get in the way of us playing around. When you retire I am sure you will catch up like I am! 😃👍
@@ScoutCrafter I don’t think I’m ever going to be able to afford to retire!
Thank you for the metric conversion, Mr Crafter 🇦🇺

Perfect project John... Thank you for sharing, I learned a lot from this.
Wow that looks over the moon amazing and would fit in just about anywhere Excellent job 👌
Very nice project John. Very cool handle. It really adds to the look of the box. Little subtle touches like clocking the screws also adds to the look.👍🎥🇺🇸

4 different screwdrivers, to disassemble the box,, wow, !!! So lucky you had some to choose from,, ha ha ha,, 🤣
Very happy to see this old box saved and not ending up in a fire or garbage! It meant something to the one who built it and they put their time and care into it to hold maybe something special to them. Very nice!
Old glory looking beautiful in that blue sky 🇺🇸 🇬🇧
The box turned out great,I never thought to use cold blue on other metals, great tip. Thanks again
You nailed another one. Balancing the finish and the hardware restored the original classic look. Definitely harder than making from scratch. I picked up some good tips as always.
The box came out beautiful but what puts it over the top is that handle. Outstanding. Thanks
Plain and Simple Scout . Nice Job 👍

There's just something about a nice wooden box, isn't there? They're great!
So nice; the braided handle was such a great addition, and treatment of the hardware was perfect for the box! John, you are the man!

Absolutely the way it should be done
Well thought out and executed

I do love the patina wood gets over the years. You certainly did a nice conservation! The oil finish was a good choice.
ScoutCrafter. A superb tribute to the original maker. Very well done . Kindest Regards from “Old” York, England.
You did it justice. The leather handle is a nice asset to the box. You could do a show on braiding leather. Thank you
Outstanding, Marine! What a great job you did. I was wondering if you were going to weave the handle. Just about as good as it gets.
Great job. You've probably added at least a hundred years onto the life of that wee box. Well done.
One wonders what the design intention was... Great project and outcome, happy to see the initials survived,
The box looks terrific. I love the braided handle. Very well done.
Dave.
One of my favourite episodes to date. Thank you!
I liked this restoration very much. I just finished my old tool box restoration as well and I used red felt inside the drawers, looks so good.
Gratitude to the days when craftsman used scraps to make things. Family men rarely spend money or time on them self! Great work really like the leather handle!
...LOOKIN' GOOD, NICE WORK, KEEP SAFE..
I think we all would enjoy more projects like this one, maybe a box from scratch!
Great job on the box. Love that you retained the character.

Exceptional work on the box, I particularly love the handle, nice job. Thanks for the video sir.
I love the braided leather handle, and the inserts are really flushly cut, nice job 👍
Turned out nice!

My dad and grandfather used to use a piece of window pane glass as a wood scraper works great and lasts forever and if you hit a nail either throw in away or cut 1/4” off and you’re back in business
I’d like to see those corner bumper armor things that they used to have on steamer trunks. So that it looks like it could handle being tossed around.
Thanks for the brass blueing tip and nice job blending, also the ghosts of the patina boys should be happy
Am I the only one screaming out 'how did you do that leather braid?'
No. Me too! How’d he do that? Very nice project.
Same like huh?
No. I'm looking for a strip of leather right now and I'm going to figure it out. I can braid rope so I'm try before I look it up!
I would have shown how but the link in the description is very good! Better than I could do! 😃👍
@ScoutCrafter ok I admit I never saw the link! I've watched it twice now and still can't quite get my head around it. Guess I'm gonna have to find some scrap leather and have a go!
Nice job, really the warm amber color this one had by the end. Handle is great too I'm sure many are going to give this a shot now.
Such a great tribute. Glad you saved the initials
Well done John! Really enjoyed this project. Showing your “jack of all trades” vibe. Always look forward to the MWF releases.

Excellent job on the box and hardware. I usually learn something from you and today was no exception. Thanks!
great restoration as always. the previous owner would be proud.
A reat tribute to the maker for sure.
