    Doubt you'll see this because I'm posting a year after you made this vid, but if you are, I second your comment on having a favorite gas station. I always tell my wife I really like going to a well lit, clean station at night. I don't know what it is that draws me to them, but for some reason it just seems like a nice oasis of comfort and community, perhaps security, especially on road trips. Love your channel - just came across it a couple of months ago and have been busy going through your library of vids; you got me hooked on tool restoration now and I just went out and got wire wheels, grinding pads, and buffers for my angle and bench grinders and scored a bunch of pipe wrenches and C-clamps at an auction for a few dollars each. Thanks again for the great content.

    Very nice job on the chisel John it’s got years of life back in it. When I go visit my daughter in Texas I go to a supers gas station called Buckies. It’s actually a destination With over 100 gas pumps per location and they even have a barbecue inside that is fantastic. It’s well worth the trip have a good weekend look forward to Monday

    When I was in ninth grade I had wood shop ( my absolute favorite part of the day), we had unusual fluorescent light fixtures in the shop. They looked like ceiling fans, except instead of blades there were long U shaped tubes. One of the guys was using a lathe, the gouge slipped out of his hand and went airborne. I swear it looked like slow motion, end over end it took out about 2 or 3 of those tubes. You never seen guys run so fast in their lives. Gosh I miss those days.

    When you showed that set of books on the table, it reminds me that my dad had a set of books by Audels. Carpentry, plumbing, mathematics for carpenters, etc. published in 1938. Still have them. Chisel turned out great. Those old tools just remind me of the skills and patience that the old craftsmen had. Gosh I remember when you were lucky if you could get a soda at a gas station. Of course every gas station could repair your car back then!!!

    Thanks for the great footage got caught late at work unfortunately and couldn’t make it. Anyways thanks again for your hard work. Many of us appreciate and understand the effort and craftsmanship that goes into the restorations. Opposed to that thing the field that had to say something. That guy really turned my gears he must have some ego to say that, but as they say ego is the anesthesia that deadens the pain of stupidity. Keep up the amazing work!

    I was so glad to see you go straight to the angle grinder. So many restorers waste time with wire brushes, sandpaper, files, and even chemicals before breaking out the angle grinder, when it was obvious from the start that that's what was going to happen in the end.
    I don't know how you passed up so many perfect handle screwdrivers! If I saw those for $5 or less I'd be scarfing them all up.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 года назад +1

      Sometimes on tools that I don't know what the deal is I will wire brush them to see if there is a name or engraving that could drastically change the value or how I approach the tool... Thanks!!!!!!!!

    • @rpc717
      @rpc717 4 года назад

      Gotcha - thanks! With the level of "patina 😂" on this chisel, it looked like a straight-to-grinder project to me, but that's a great point. Some of them have really cool marks.

    We men complain when the wives make us come shopping with them, but... You take them on just ONE trip to a tool swap / flea market and they’ll never ask us to come along again.
    My wife when I show her my find: “whaddya want with that piece of junk, they should have paid you to take it away!”
    Me, three days later after bringing said “piece of junk” fully restored back into the house: What do you think honey?
    Wife: how much did that cost, it looks expensive!
    Me: should I tell her, hmmm? Lol I chose NO. She’d have me knee deep in projects from all of her girlfriends because their husbands “can’t!” Great vid, so jealous! Can’t wait to hit the “field flea markets” this spring and summer again. We have pretty big ones in Massachusetts. Thanks for taking us along brother!

    Been waiting for you to do a chisel, finally gave up and did them without your guidance. Two big 2" timber frame from the same company, one had what I thought was the original handle (bad shape) so I made two more. Mine weren't as rusty as yours, and I didn't clean up the metal as much as you. Did a few smaller ones also, I like to try different designs and woods on the handles. Great job once again. Now I can say if Scoutcrafter can spend all that time working on his chisels, it must be worth my time also.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 года назад

      Michael- A few years back there was a resurgence in timber framing and all timber frame tools were sort after again... We tend to go thru cycles but I don't think the newer generation will have much interest in making things... In 20 years all the timber framing tools will be worthless once again like anvils... =) It's fun for us though! Thanks!

    I wish they had these tool meets in the UK. Some of those tools looked like bargains, the biggest problems is when people in the UK get American tools the price goes up greatly. I guess it may be similar in the states?. Great chisel, I have some old English ones and they have a leather buffer between the chisel and the handle.

    • @stevecallachor
      @stevecallachor 4 года назад +1

      There are two types of chisel, mortise chisel and "firmer " chisel. They are designed for different work...If you want to bash hell out of the tool cutting deep mortises use a mortise chisel..............they have the leather washer to ease the job. As tools got cheaper to make, manufacturers got greedy and gradually things defaulted to the .....one tool , do everything with it , abuse it , throw it away...........they only cost a few dollars.

    Yeah, for a blacksmith forging that type of socket out would be a lot of work. I imagine it's quite a bit more durable than a forge-welded socket because it's solid steel all the way around the neck as oppsed to how you'd go about making the tradtional forge-welded version.

    Sweet chisel! The stuff there would have required me to bring a trailer. You should travel much farther than you normally do if the gas station is cool to you. Come see Arkansas!

      Well come on down then! I would love to meet you in person. I live in a slightly infamous town called Mena. You might have seen it in the movie "American Made". Our airport is famous. I would love to show you around.

      Hi Matt- Used the angle grinder for the heavy rust removal then the belt sander to flatten out the chisel! =D

    Nice job on the chisel handle. Glad you mentioed thr needed gap between the socket and the shoulder on the handle. Keeps from splitting the outside off the handle.
    What annoys me is finding a laminated steel chisel with a bent blade. Someone tried to pop out a chip that wss too big.
    That and hitting the socket with a hammer. Ruins the chisel in just a few blows.

      Old Sneelock's Workshop Dave- When I was young and dumb I abused a few tools not knowing the proper way to use them, I never blame people who don’t know I just blame the people who know better! 😃👍

    "Oh wait, back up". I said that in my mind a few times as your camera panned across the tools. :) Great job on the chisel.

    The sad part is to see just how little the vintage tools are worth - I own many of the ones you videoed.
