I love this much more because not every character has an "interesting" silhouette, especially when dealing with more "normal" people. Silhouettes can be great for some things, but not the end all be all. I never liked having to add a bunch of stuff jutting out or choose unnatural poses to make a silhouette seem worthwhile.

I really don't like designing with silhouettes, it feels so counterintuitive for me! I'm very happy to learn I'm not the only one, especially since a lot of my tutors preach this method and it just... doesn't work for me. I can't feel the character that way. Refining the silhouette is like, the second half of the designing process for me, more like an afterthought to make everything clearer and more readable.
I always start with the basic 3/4 view portraits lol

I know the creator of JoJos, Hirohiko Araki definitely doesn't start with designs for his characters. He writes a character sheet, he decides the characters name, their hobbies, their blood type, interests, values, etc. And it's very clear he does this before designing character because he puts fucking massive and blatant pins and badges that are related to their character on their outfits, like Rohan's giant pen nib that he has one his coat. He wrote a book on manga writing, it's an excellent read.

I think the way character design works is dependent on the artist's intentions.
If I wanted to draw a character, simply because I want to draw, say, a cloak, the design factor would probably outweigh the character factor.
Example: I really want to draw a dude in a snazzy suit with specific symbols; not a character i'd use, I just want to draw a dude that looks good in that suit.
If I wanted to draw a character that I will use as a main in a story, the character idea should come before the design. This fleshes them out; cultural differences, clothing based on style and area in which they live, etc.
Example: My first (and favorite oc) is a princess that loves art, school, has a specific set of friends, and unique family life. This all affects what she wears, how she acts, what expressions she'd make, etc.
I really do like this advice, though. I always was told to make thumbnails and silhouettes, which just never worked for me. I never thought about how much the character was pushed aside and the design was pushed forward. Thanks for the inspiration!

Silhouette based design seems like the last step in the process to me, it's especially important for games but I'd you start with it you have to exaggerate too much. Characters in breaking bad for instance have great sillouhettes but it would be wild to start that way. Casting actors for personality is where you start, then their wardrobe and posture define sillouhette
