I know this video is older, but it would be REALLY cool if you fleshed out all 4 of the archers you created. Seeing them stand together on the page made me think of them as a kind of secret tribe of blind archers, outcasts from their respective societies, who all happened to converge and meet, forming a band of badass heroes. Instantly my imagination went to work. Here's what I came up with: The *Old Man* is the mentor figure that trained the younger members in the art of archery. Much of his past is a mystery. He was once a captain of the royal guard, but lost his eyesight in battle, and was disowned because he was now seen as useless. He chained himself to his bow so as to never be separated from the one piece of his former life that he still has, and then exiled himself to the wilderness in search of a new purpose and new way of life... The *Huntress* comes from a tribe of proud hunters. Born blind, she had to fight constantly to earn the respect or her family and fellow villagers, but to no avail. She was seen as useless, no matter what feats she accomplished. She trained tirelessly her entire life, honing her ability to navigate the world around her with her other senses. One night, her village was attacked and burned to the ground, her family slain, and she was taken as a slave. The next night, while being transported through thick woods, the two guards keeping night watch decided to take her out of her cage and "have some fun" with her. She convinces them to unchain her so that she can be better at pleasing them, and as soon as they do, she slays them both with their own daggers, and flees into the woods. Hot on her tail are another contingency of guards, and just when she gets cornered, and all hope looks lost, arrows whiz through the darkness, killing her pursuers. It was the *Old Man*. He smelled the smoke of her village from miles away, and had set out to investigate. He takes her in, and so begins her training in archery... The *Hooded Man* hails from the same city as the *Old Man*. As a teenager, he was falsely accused of stealing food from the local market. Without investigation or a trial, he was deemed guilty by the royal guard, who was now under the command of a new captain. His punishment was to be to lose a hand, as was the standard, however the knife proved to be too dull to cut through his flesh and bones. The captain decided to use it to cut out his eyes instead. Blind and bleeding, he was tossed out into the streets. A gypsy medicine woman found him, sewed up his eyes to prevent infection, and nursed him back to health. Over time, they fall in love. One of the guardsmen of the city has been infatuated with her for years, but she had always spurned his attempts to court her. He sees their relationship blossom and becomes furious with jealousy that a blind man could take "his woman" from him. He gathers a few of his fellow guards, and they jump him and beat him in the streets. When the Medicine Woman finds out what happened, she is distraught, and can think of only one way to protect him: She ends their relationship, and demands that the *Hooded Man* leave her alone and never speak to her again. Heart broken, he leaves the city in the back of a merchant's wagon that is headed for a port town. In exchange, the merchant asks only that he hold up a good conversation on the road. The *Hooded Man* obliges... The *Punk Woman* is a pirate and bandit. When she was 12, she was arranged to be wed to an older boy in her port city where she grew up. Having no interest in marriage, and being very hard headed, she ran away from home, and stowed herself away on a merchant ship. She hid there for a week, pilfering food when she could. After the first week at sea, the merchant ship was attacked by a band of pirates. In the ensuing combat, the merchant ship was boarded, and while the pirates plundered the loot, they discovered her. She was brought before the pirate captain, and due to her spunky and independent attitude and her wit, he decided to keep her aboard as a part of the crew. She learned how to run a ship and how to use a crossbow. She grew up with that crew, until one day the pirate ship found itself up against a small contingency of armed ships. A rudimentary gunpowder bomb was catapulted onto the deck of their ship, and the explosion sent shrapnel of wood and unburnt black powder into her eyes, blinding her. The captain was able to manage a retreat, and gained enough headway to send his first mate and the wounded young *Punk Woman* off in a rowboat to reach the shore, while the rest of the crew kept their pursuer's attention and escaped to sea. The first mate was able to tend to her wounds, and over time, she acclimated to her blindness. They became roadside bandits, knowing no other trade or way of life. In one of their many raids, the first mate was wounded, though they escaped with their lives. The *Punk Woman* was able to help bandage him, but his wounds became infected. Not wanting to frighten her, the first mate did not mention it. Eventually, his illness became apparent, and shortly after, he died. 2 weeks had passed since then, and not knowing what else to do, the *Punk Woman* tries to perform a raid on her own. She hears a wagon approaching, and the voices of two men in the distance draw closer...
Calanee O'Dell Yeah man, if you'd like to flesh it out further, I think that would be really cool. It's always interesting to see what two minds can create versus just one :) Adds fresh perspective. Let me know when you make some progress.
Temmie Taler Thanks! It kind of just flowed through me as I looked at those characters. It uses some classic archetypes, but it kind of feels like the story itself is already written, and it just came from the Universe and I translated it. That happens to me when I write music as well. You guys ever feel like that with writing/music/art? Or am I just totally crazy?
The four blind archers standing next to each other made me think that the king was holding auditions for blind archers and those are the ones that turned up...
+da' medic Look up the beyonder's series by Brandon mull. You'll really dig the character Galloran. It's by far my favorite book series I'd strongly recommend you dig into it.
I've seen a lot of Jazza characters that end up with some sort of disability exp. Blind, wheelchair bound and I can't help but notice how well he handles those characteristics as them being exactly that, characteristics. They're not the character it's just a part of the character. It's so refreshing
He really reminds me of the blind guy from Quest for Camelot! Which I loved how they portrayed his character as strong and not weak. I wish that someone could make a story with this guy. I'd read it in a heart beat! Amazing work jazza!
I like how color coordinated his outfit is even though hes a blind guy lol, just imagining him shopping and asking the shop keeps whether the gloves and boots matches his bow or whether red is a good color on him.
I like how you kept the video's content was compromised enough to provide enough time to be satisfied but no too much. Awesome character designs, and nice simple coloring and shading!
I'm starting to learn that the full 'rough' character stage of yours is always my favorite. I love all four of them together and the pencil sketches just look better in my opinion.
Man you're too powerfull I'm absolutely unable to draw that quickly faces and bodies if I drew "tests" like you do before each character I would just spend days to finish one fucking draw XD I guess I'm gonna train now ;)
+Draw with Jazza now Jazza I have a challenge for you please comment back if you accept or don't accept okay here is the challenge: make an ogre assassin that uses a bow made from dragon bones and short swords as his/her throwing "knives" you can go crazy with other design aspects just you have to include these things in the piece so do you accept the challenge?
i think i have said this before but i think showing people the finished product in the thumbnail is kind of making them lose interest in the video, which might lead to them, skipping such. I myself cannot make it to most of your streams simply because i am too busy to do so. my point is that I, for one would enjoy these videos way more if i wouldn't know whats coming. just a suggestion
+Git Gud Nub i made sure the thumbnail only showed a portion of the final character, that being said just showing scribbles and colorless sketches means the thumbnail wouldn't have any grabbing power at all. It's a bit of a double-bind :/
As Jazza said in a video. Drawing isn't the Destination....it's the journey. I look at the thumbnail and go like....woooow. I wanna see how he draws this
This video was so helpful, in a retrospective and roundabout way. When I watched this back in lockdown, I took it as inspiration and designed a character of my own. Since then, I've been building on his story and trying to iron out the world surrounding him - even got to play him in a Tabletop game! You helped to inspire the creation of one of my most treasured characters, and I've sure you've inspired lots of people in that same way.. What I'm pretty much saying is thank you!
I really like the blindfolded old man but I don't really picture him as an archer, I see him like some sort of old master, like a wizard's teacher of sorts.
The looking down and up thing he picked up on is really cool. It's a subtle thing some people wouldn't pick up on. In movies where people hear a noise and are scared they look up and around but in movies where the hero is listening he/she will have her head looking down. It's done in so many movies, games and cartoons and it's never really talked about.
I think its a shame that the other characters never get colour. That mystical huntress was really interesting. I'd have liked to have seen what you could do with her.
This was the video that got me into jazza. I kept seeing him in my recommendations but kept not clicking, I did and coming back to this video is really cool.
Wow, I really loved the design for all of your different blind archers. They all had their own unique feel and I could almost lay out a story for each of them in my head as you were drawing. The fact of them being blind archers at all really was rather interesting and I found myself wanting to draw my own. ^-^ I always enjoy watching your videos since they're so helpful and just overall inspiring and I can't wait for the next one~
Hey Jazza, just wanted to say thanks a lot for these videos and the constant encouragement. Drawing doesn't come naturally to me at all. Watching you draw has made me more spontaneous and I was finally able to make a simple sketch. Hurray!
Knuspai also that is still a legitimate way to shoot- as someone who’s been an archer for roughly eleven years I can safely say that there is no “wrong” way to shoot- (unless you’re hurting someone or being dangerous), because everyone has a different technique. I draw back to the corner of my eye so I can see down the arrow, but others draw to their mouth or ear. Also there are many different stances in shooting, (unless shooting competitively) and when “hunting” (false animal targets) I use a completely different stance to when I compete. There may be a “right” way in competitions and the olympics, but when shooting for the sake of shooting it’s what’s most comfortable.
You were in the zone during this one! Your initial 4 concepts were all very impressive and I would also have been very happy to see you develop any of them. The final result was great and your explanations were nice and clear too. Thanks :-)
The old man archer from the sketches reminded me of Hawkeye from the "Old Man Logan" series by McNiven some eyars ago from Marvel. This is probably some of your ebst work so far with these, jazza! Really awesome to have been around you for these years and seen you progress in your arts as us students of yours have done as well!
so it turns out, i'm not the only one who thought all four would a cool team. they already have all the archetypes: the wise old man, the powerful girl (possibly the leader), the edgy hooded figure, and the punk, here's how i think their stories go The old man was a slave, but, against the wishes of his master, he educated himself and also learned archery. Afraid of their slave becoming powerful, they burnt out his eyes so that he may no longer read and, most importantly, aim. To add salt to the wound, they chained him to his bow. What they didn't know is that he relied on much more than just his sight when using the bow, so he ran away to the forest to hone his skills further. As a child, the girl can see spirits, but whenever she tells people, they either ignore her or get scared and angry. As she grew older, more people believed her and accused her of being a witch. She was captured, tied to a tree in the forest, and left to die. Soon, a bear shows up, but instead of attacking her, it cut her bonds. Frightened and not knowing what else to do, she escaped. She ran into a very powerful spirit. This spirit can only hold a limited amount of power, and to get rid of excess, it has to temporarily fuse with a host and transfer some of the power to them. Upon seeing a young girl with the Sight, it quickly thought her a perfect candidate. It passed through her, but the ordeal left her blind. She soon learned how to fend for herself in the forest, and carved herself a long bow. Her eyesight may be gone, but maybe she sees the world in a different way. Only knowing life in the streets and having an arrow as his only possession, the young boy was tired of all the wickedness that happens everyday around him. He moved into a monastery, where he hoped to see less evil. He learned with them for a couple of years, until he found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, when he discovered the monks' true nature. Abandoning any moral code they have and corrupting the nature of their monastery, they filled it with every act the opposite of virtue. Repulsed by all the evil he saw, he sewed his own eyes shut. As he ran away with his arrow chained to him, he was determined to do what little he can to rid the world of some of its evil. The (punk) girl was kidnapped, blinded, chained and enslaved at a young age by pirates. After adapting to her violent environment until she can hardly remember any other life, she became strong enough to literally and figuratively break free of her chains. She mastered the crossbow, and even shaved the sides of her head to hear better. Soon, she formed a crew of her own and became the most infamous pirate in the seas. She kept her old chains around her, to show her crew that despite looking vulnerable, she was not easily put down. Her crew, however, didn't like having a female captain with obvious weaknesses, so they mutinied against her and marooned her, with only her crossbow. She soon found her way back to civilization, and decided to try to start a new, decent life. Meeting: Seeing the old man wandering aimlessly through her forest, the young woman pitied him and nursed him back to health. She also helped him to relearn archery, perhaps even with more precision as he had before. They soon form a strange father-daughter relationship. The hooded boy meets the pirate in a lonely street, and immediately sensed that she had a violent life (something he learned from the monks?), with most of the violence done by her. They fight, but it ended in a draw. They soon form a weird brother-sister frenemy relationship. how should the two parties meet. what if the hooded boy is the old slave's son?
I love how you are both an amazing artist AND such a nice guy. I mean I enjoy watching you drawing as much as I enjoy watching videos where you only speak to us. It's like having a discussion with a friend (a very talented friend ahah) and thank you very much for this. Thank you for your advice during all these videos as well. =D
I`m dreaming of becoming a graphic designer one day, and these videos really help getting the inspiration back when art block hits. : ) Keep up the amazing work !
overall i personally think your the best youtube artist that gives out lots of tutorials, i really like how this turned out although i like the eyepatch chick bit more ^^
The archer with the chain attached to the arrow also makes sense in a way of the fact that he can't find his arrow, and probably can't very easily make more. The chain works as a way for him to bring his arrow back.
Man, I wish I could see all of them finalized. All of the designs looked so great

+dolebiscuit yea I tried to make my own song when I was little but it didn't work out XD
The four blind archers standing next to each other made me think that the king was holding auditions for blind archers and those are the ones that turned up...
+cenedra20 a king like that would make for some very cruel but entertaining parties...
Ah, the balls we used to have!^^
+Draw with Jazza how about deaf and unable to speak knights
+safeldus with one arm and no tongue
+cenedra20 He should draw the dark knight from Monty Python
I think you should make your own comicbook, with a medieval fantasy genre! I'd buy it!
+Axel TF I dont BUY it. It being the idea that you would buy it
You know the arrow chain could be so that he can pull the arrow back, because he can't go out and look for it
Miner 1210 that's cool! Sounds like something out of a fantasy game
MadGod 1210 or swing the aponent around and having a way to aim after hitting him or her
Oh, thats nice. There are also many other uses you you have for that, I might try that for my LARP character.
blue magician 12 man can't even spell opponent 😂😂
Cheese
I would've loved to have seen all 4 of them inked and coloured in that original draft. :3
All the characters together looks like they've joined together for a war haha
ikr
The old guy chained to the bow would make a great book. Or even a witcher character OR A DARK SOULS BOSS
+da' medic for sure dude!
+da' medic /If it was a book, I'd totally read it.
+da' medic Look up the beyonder's series by Brandon mull. You'll really dig the character Galloran. It's by far my favorite book series I'd strongly recommend you dig into it.

having someone write a backstory to all these characters you make in the character design sessions would be awesome.
I've seen a lot of Jazza characters that end up with some sort of disability exp. i am crying right now..he is so great at drawing and brainstorming characters
Yep he gave much inspiration
Your drawing looks so much better than usual in this video! Great job!
By far the highest quality character design session yet! Good job.
I'd love to see high quality versions of the other 3!
I like how color coordinated his outfit is even though hes a blind guy lol, just imagining him shopping and asking the shop keeps whether the gloves and boots matches his bow or whether red is a good color on him.
more character designs!!
its so cool!
I like how you kept the video's content was compromised enough to provide enough time to be satisfied but no too much. Awesome character designs, and nice simple coloring and shading!
Those designs are so awesome! :D
We need more videos like this the old character design videos are what got me hooked on your channel
Leave it to a Jazza video to show me that I've been spelling "medieval" wrong my entire life.
Nice drawing, mate.

I'm starting to learn that the full 'rough' character stage of yours is always my favorite. I love all four of them together and the pencil sketches just look better in my opinion.
Man you're too powerfull I'm absolutely unable to draw that quickly faces and bodies if I drew "tests" like you do before each character I would just spend days to finish one fucking draw XD
I guess I'm gonna train now ;)
MORE!! More awesome, badass character design sessions!!
I prefer them SO much more to the silly ones!!
I know you won't read this Jazza, but you're an inspiration not only with art but with how awesome you are :)

Love how it turned out. I think having the character's eyes sewn shut is a nice touch.
this reminds of assian creed character
ikr
assian?
Asian's creed😂
Mercury Reborn XD
Your character turned out awesome, and I actually loved all the 4 characters - you have awesome talent Jazza!
i think i have said this before but i think showing people the finished product in the thumbnail is kind of making them lose interest in the video, which might lead to them, skipping such. +Git Gud Nub i made sure the thumbnail only showed a portion of the final character, that being said just showing scribbles and colorless sketches means the thumbnail wouldn't have any grabbing power at all. It's a bit of a double-bind :/
hmm.. i did not consider that, sorry for troubling you with personal concerns.
+Git Gud Nub my friend i welcome constructive criticism! Thanks for showing thoughtful interest
As Jazza said in a video. Drawing isn't the Destination....it's the journey. I look at the thumbnail and go like....woooow. I wanna see how he draws this

all I could think of was Toph from ATLA
I've been watching for a few months now but just found these character design videos. These are awesome. Definitely my favorite of you challenges
Wasn't too pleased with the coloring on this one. The rest of the design was very well produced...Keep this "Character Design" series going. :)
This was the video that got me into jazza. I kept seeing him in my recommendations but kept not clicking, I did and coming back to this video is really cool.
The character kinda reminds me of a character for assassins creed
lol me too XD
I could see such an amazing story idea behind the concept of archer's chain to their bows.
I want to see the Emo sharpshooter XD
Wow, I really loved the design for all of your different blind archers. They all had their own unique feel and I could almost lay out a story for each of them in my head as you were drawing. I think drawing is more of a skill then a talent so it doesn't come easy to anyone
PLEASE DO A COLLAB WITH BAYLEE JAE!!!!!!
Yassss 👌🏻
I agree, their styles are so different that it would be awesome to see what they could do together!
That would be really cool!
they could send lineart to eachother
Jóna_exe YES PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN
So, this character is exactly what I didn't realize I needed for my male protagonist! Thank you for the detail I didn't know I needed!!
You should have done the old man

This one has got to be one of my personal favorites, next to the apple dragon
I was watching Daredevil before I came here haha
+Jos' drawing
Oh my fucking god. I was doing the exact same thing. Are you on season 2?
+Luna AngelEclipse of course! Already finished it, punisher killed it! Matt and Franks are awesome characters!
Jos' drawing I totally agree! The Punisher was awesome. The finale was a total piss take though.
+Luna AngelEclipse Yeah, the ending could've been better
I love how you make these very painful situations so innocent
I wish I could draw as good as you. Have any tips for drawing better?
Same
You guys could watch some of his many tutorials or try doodling random this you find
+Sniper1286 check out his tutorial on "How to Practice" It has some really good tips.
+Sniper1286 I draw while I watch the videos
Thanks for the responses everyone. :)
Such a badass design, that chained-arrow idea is so sick
The arms are wrong, sorry. But try shoot an arrow like that. The right hand should be twisted :)
or the left hand
He's shooting a bunny....🙄
Knuspai he’s staying low and in a stance, it’s uncomfortable to hold a bow upright when not in battle (keep in mind that the archer is not shooting)
This is one of my favourite character design sessions you've done! I really wish you could have done a final version of all of them
Just noticed he's never drawn a black guy or girl.
+Ski Bee good point - I will keep diversity in mind in future!
+Ski Bee Jazza has draw lots of girls. Harley Quinn for example !
+Ski Bee What about the bear- strippers?
Lol
+Draw with Jazza I think you have for Tabletop Time? Isn't that big character black guy?
I really loved the mystical blind huntress.. 😍😍 SO PRETTY!
You were in the zone during this one! Your initial 4 concepts were all very impressive and I would also have been very happy to see you develop any of them. The final result was great and your explanations were nice and clear too. Thanks :-)
This was one of your best character designs.
I really like the blind medieval archer. It is so creative
All the designs together is like a blind archer squad
The double eye patches are badass!
the bow and arrow grappling hook thing is the coolest idea!
It's nice how he chose from several designs .
I would love to see all of these being developed into something bigger, they are all so different and unique!
Jazza inspired me to draw and I've never had so much fun doing so! Thank You!
Love the sketches of the four archers!
These characters were super cool! Good job.
awesome :) I love the drawing process!
All these designs were amazing!
If you didn't exist I wouldn't have pursued my animation career. Thank you so much for being a giant inspiration.
Loved all the character ideas. The Female Archer with the double eyepatches looks like a Blind Steampunk Skycaptain :) Very good works :D
Love your art and your attitude!!! Australian Bob Ross of animation!!! Please keep up the videos. More on blending and shading please.
The four archer next to each other just look epic.
Probably my favorite character design so far! He looks so Bad-A and I hope one day to draw like that because I'm in awe!
i love this show so much man pls make more character design series i rlly love it
I really loved the concept of the Mystical Huntress but it came out good :) You are such an amazing artist
Cant believe... its soo beautiful! :)
That character design looks badass
so it turns out, i'm not the only one who thought all four would a cool team. they already have all the archetypes: the wise old man, the powerful girl (possibly the leader), the edgy hooded figure, and the punk,
here's how i think their stories go
The old man was a slave, but, against the wishes of his master, he educated himself and also learned archery.
Meeting:
Seeing the old man wandering aimlessly through her forest, the young woman pitied him and nursed him back to health.
They soon form a weird brother-sister frenemy relationship.
how should the two parties meet. what if the hooded boy is the old slave's son?
these are my favorite videos of yours to watch
I love how you are both an amazing artist AND such a nice guy. I mean I enjoy watching you drawing as much as I enjoy watching videos where you only speak to us. It's like having a discussion with a friend (a very talented friend ahah) and thank you very much for this. Thank you for your advice during all these videos as well. =D
I`m dreaming of becoming a graphic designer one day, and these videos really help getting the inspiration back when art block hits. : ) Keep up the amazing work !
All 4 characters would be badd ass together. A completely blind team of amazing characters would be pretty cool to see.
I would love to do a makeup look on all your characters. They're all too cool asf.
So creative... very motivating, thanks!
I like the cloaked dude with the chain attached to his arrow, he is really cool.
i love to see the oldman be completely drawn
They all 4 look really awesome!
They're like a.. team of blind archers! something like a mercenery team or.. a cult thing?
thank you jazza for the inspiration. you always help me get some really creative thoughts flowing! :)
I really miss these. I don't really get much from the Jazza uses odd supplies videos but his character designs are excellent.
overall i personally think your the best youtube artist that gives out lots of tutorials, i really like how this turned out although i like the eyepatch chick bit more ^^
These were the good days... Honestly seeing today's constant 'challanges' this was so much better and more creative
jazza, you are simply amazing!!!😱
This guy is like a medieval daredevil/arrow mashup ... absolutely badass.
The archer with the chain attached to the arrow also makes sense in a way of the fact that he can't find his arrow, and probably can't very easily make more. The chain works as a way for him to bring his arrow back.
Red hair and dark green clothes! great video Jazza! :D
