15:10 That's difficulty setting made right way. I hate when games literally just removes content for example from boss fights if you decide to play at easier difficulty for what ever reason. I didn't ask to show me less of the game, I asked it to be easier!
I disagree, it's difficulty settings done okay. Difficulty settings done right is what ninja gaiden black did. They don't make enemies faster, they replace enemies entirely with new varieties that have similar roles but a larger moveset and more complex behavior. Not only the game gets hard, it's refreshingly different to play in each difficulty. That multiplies the replay value exponentially, because it's like playing a new game when you increase the difficulty. You have to learn how to deal with whole new set of enemies, and then new combinations of enemies, and they all look different so people can tell at a glance that you're playing a harder difficulty, too.

The marauder forces you to do the exact opposite, completely stopping any momentum and in turn fun. Especially if you're playing on console, it's damn near impossible to perfect the timing and spacing required to master the fight considering the window to attack is so minuscule and you're limited to aiming with an analogue stick and requiring the use of the weapon wheel. This game was a weird one for me. Loved 2016 and was looking forward to this one. Started Eternal on Nightmare and had a horrible experience. Game just kept kicking my @$$ and I felt the formula was needlessly changed up. Got up to Urdak and I just put it aside for some months. I come back to it on Ultra-Violence and I’m having a blast. The skills I developed on Nightmare made the combat loop rewarding but not overwhelming.
I felt the same way. But if they just made DOOM(2016) 2 then that would have been lame. But once you get used to the "combat dance" as they call it, it becomes a very fun game.
It's crazy good. I fell in love with this game on my first playthrough during the arc complex level. At one point I even paused the game because I couldn't believe what badassery I'm experiencing right now. I can't even imagine myself coming back to 2016 after this. And now that they say dlc will be more challenging and badass than campaign, I'll probably fall in love with this game all over again.
I normally don't even buy games at release or DLCs I just buy the complete games for twenty bucks like two years later. I made an exception with doom eternal I bought the base game for $60 and I do not regret it at all. Can't wait for the DLC after listening to this.
So. I think we have beat the "skill progression to black belt" and "combat puzzle" analogies to absolute death. We have the same questions and same answers from these two since the game came out.
Wish they would just do an old school arena multilayer mode. Like unreal tournament . Both doom games have really dropped the ball with the multilayer. It's a good job the single player is so exceptional.
You dont go to DOOM for MP, you go to unreal turnement and Quake.. ITS ALWAYS been that way. I have played all of those games since their first onces as a kid, and theres really notthing new in that.
@@AdaaDK Fair point but doom started the arena multilayer movement and as a console gamer nowadays I t is definitely a hole in the market. Unreal tournament 3 last gen was a decent effort for console. Especially on ps3.
@@JG-wx2xs For PC, doom didnt start anything MP whise, Unreal and Quake did. Obviously i dont know what happende on consoles several years later, since all of these titels debuted on PC, and then several years later came to consoles.
@@AdaaDK Any video you watch on the history of doom it refers to it being the massive drive around fragtastic multilayer. Either way. I feel it is a missed opportunity. Surely we can agree the multilayer in 2016 and eternal is lack luster.
Remember that the IdTech 7 currently uses a forward renderer(or Clustered Renderer as it uses 3d boxes to cull lights so that there can be more on a single scene without crippling performance). The modern way of doing RTX effects is not compatible at all with that paradigm, it requires a deferred renderer. I think DLSS could be implemented though.
I think my only problem with eternal was that there wasn't enough seek in the seek and destroy gameplay of the older ones. But I know I'm just one of many people who like different things for Doom.
Doom 2016 is still the perfect experience for me even over Eternal which I have yet to actually play myself. To those that wanted MORE from 2016, I can clearly see Eternal satisfied that demand. I never had any doubt in ID.
Can we get Quake 1 - 4 on Switch, and a Doom/Quake shared universe with a Quake reboot after Ancient Gods. Let's just have the Slayer banished to the netherworld and becoming Ranger... with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross doing the music.
I think it was pretty obvious to me he could not say because it is hand in hand with the new Switch. Which will make it what they want visually. He could not say How close because then it gives away the release window.
Thank you John for the interview and for reprecenting Quake fans at the end lmao, i wish they did a Quake 1 Reboot in idTech 7 could you imagine that? I think there is potential on trying to turn Quake into akin to a Dark Souls type experience, with the gothic/dark style and all.
@Victor M Yea DOPA wasn't bad but its just an add-on. And I think its an indication that they might be given the task for the next full blown Quake. But after the last 2 Wolfensteins, I am kinda worried.
One bad thing about Marauders is their erratic behavior. If you are too far away they throw an axe, if you are too close they shotgun you, fine... but when they just teleports in right in front of your face and shotgun you, there is nothing you can do about it and it ruins the tempo of the whole game. When that sort of thing does not happen and the fight remains legit, sure it works, but when it does not work properly you feel it so much it is beyond frustrating. I heard Hugo talk about how they wanted the players to know and aknowledge when they die in order to do better and progress, but those Marauders fail to make it so, hence why it feels like cheesing or breaking the game when you combo them. "To beat him you must not let him play" does feel a bit cheap compared to the dance you are required to perform when fighting other types of big monsters like the Doom Hunters, or like those upcoming Blood Angels from The Ancient Gods trailer. In a way, Marauders break the power fantasy feeling inherent to DOOM. Those are stupidly fast, strong and resilient so you better stunlock them and shit half your ammo pool as fast as possible before they can do anything... That is not a great design. And it does break the flow of the game. Not caring about them until everything else is dead is proof that they do not fit in the dance. Bottom line is I've yet to see anyone complain about how difficult they are to beat. They just don't work well and don't feel good to fight. Still, the Arch-vile annoys me even more. There is neither a dance nor a learning pattern to understand. They just stand there and eat everything you throw at them without flinching. Each time I replay the game I get the feeling the sword exists only for him. At least DOOM 2016's summoner was as weak as she was elusive so you had to play cat and mouse while more and more demons were flooding the arena. It's funny how those minor issues become big ones when everything else in the game is perfect xD
Hugo and Marty, if you're reading this I believe the critique of the marauder is more of a meme than serious. He's a boss character after all. He's difficult. No need to explain or feel like you have to double down on accessibility.
Maybe at this point it's become kind of a meme but that is because, when the game came out, some people were really crying about the Marauder, and really the game as a whole, since it's definetly not a 'mindless' shooter they wanted (which i think it's great, Eternal is all the much better because of that).
the marauder was tough at first, but ID added so many different ways to humiliate them i can't wait to fight 2x at the same time. i absolutely loved the level where you walk through watching this thing being constructed and you fight it at the end, you think the level is over and well, it's not i fucking loved that level, id are still the best ;) im gunna play it through for like the 5th time when it gets upgraded for ps5
"If you can beat the Marauder easily, there's nothing in the game you can't smash" As someone who has been training to beat the game on ultra nightmare completely by myself without looking at guides, I can confirm this statement is completely false lol.
@@GraveUypo Yea some players just don't get the specific strategies so they think the Marauders are unstoppable. Once I got the hang of their mechanics I found them really easy to deal with. Pretty much just strafe/dash side to side while backing up slowly and super shotty/ballista him when he flashes.
Well you also have to realise that they're never mixed in with mobs of enemies outside of mods. Trust me, when they are mixed in, they're way harder to deal with than even the doom hunter
So, the experience is going to be like for example in WoW if you bought your max level character from Ebay you have no idea how to use iit but you'll be badass with the one you leveled up from the zero yourself.
/The Thing/ is a curious example, deeper than intended, because Carpenter's version isn't the original. That would be /The Thing from Another World/, from 1951.
I'm really hoping the new ost has a lot of these epic orchestral/metal/electric fusion flourishes like in the trailer. I adore music that ignores genre.
That frustration factor is why I'm not sure I can be bothered to finish The Surge. When it works well its fun, but far too often I find my inputs are ignored and I get slapped about and killed almost immediately after as a result.
Note to the devs: Doom pros like Zero Master and FrostyXen can handle 6 marauders in an arena full of heavies and supers quite well. Also, marauders with gargoyles are the worst!
Oh I hope that after all the DLCs iD will make a new Singleplayer Quake. Just think about what these guys can do. Doom Eternal was simply amazing but I think they should move to another IP.
I was able to complete Doom 2016, on Hurt me plenty, but I had to stop playing the new one. The difficulty was too ramped upon it vs 2016. So it's a game I wish I was good at, but won't touch anymore. I don't hate it like I did & do with Demon Souls, but It was too hard, for me anyway.

Ok, after watching this it's time to finish Doom Eternal on my Xbox One X. Let's play.
Man I miss game modes like Onslaught... Still have my Unreal Tournament and Tournament 2004 to LAN with my kids...
You dont go to DOOM for MP, you go to unreal turnement and Quake.. ITS ALWAYS been that way. I have played all of those games since their first onces as a kid, and theres really notthing new in that.
@@AdaaDK
Fair point but doom started the arena multilayer movement and as a console gamer nowadays I t is definitely a hole in the market.
@@AdaaDK
Any video you watch on the history of doom it refers to it being the massive drive around fragtastic multilayer.
Either way. I feel it is a missed opportunity. Surely we can agree the multilayer in 2016 and eternal is lack luster.
I want directionality to explosions and gore.
So what comes next after Doom? A Quake reboot, hopefully?
Best interview I've seen with these guys, and they always interview well
DOOM Eternal is my Game of the Year. Such a masterpiece!
I hated the Marauder but once I knew how to deal with him I totally loved the guy.
Two successful modern reboots of Doom. I hope they give some love to Heretic and Hexen next.
Any talk of raytracing or DLSS implementation?
did you ask them if they know what monthly is? Because I don't see any new master levels in the game and it's been over half a year.
I'm waiting to buy this for the Black Friday sale, stoked to check it out as I was blown away how much I enjoyed Doom 2016 when I finally beat it.
Oh man, you can't even imagine what you're about to sign up for. Buckle up.
I can see how this game goes down in history as legendary.
Hugo Martin is the best thing to happen to the Doom franchise in years. Dude cares waaaaaay beyond your average game industry boss and it shows.
I could listen to those guys nerd out about anything, forever.
This video is great. These guys from id seem are cool and obviously love what they do. Good stuff.
Where's the flipping Switch version?!!!!
Gone. Reduced to atoms.
No seriously I was hoping someone woule ask as well 😭
@@Letucen_nik they didnt really say much. Just the same thing theyve been saying for like the past 6 months.
I think it was pretty obvious to me he could not say because it is hand in hand with the new Switch. Which will make it what they want visually. He could not say How close because then it gives away the release window.
After unlocking all a achievements on PC, I'm super excited for the Switch port.
Quake I (Gothic) Reboot, please.
And id, you guys take the helm just like Doom Reboot.
Please don't assign Machinegames for this Reboot.
I agree! The only Wolf3d game I enjoyed since the reboot was The Old Blood
@Victor M Yea DOPA wasn't bad but its just an add-on.
And I think its an indication that they might be given the task for the next full blown Quake.
But after the last 2 Wolfensteins, I am kinda worried.
@Victor M The New Order and Old Blood were good.
The problem was/is with New Colossus and YoungBlood.
@Victor M Well, There's Serious Sam 4 for you then. And do you follow Gmanlives on youtube?
Doom 93 soundtrack was heavily inspired by metal songs, not sure what that comment was about!?
The game looks fantastic and runs amazing, 144fps at 1440p, they did a wonderful job on the latest engine.
Any mention of the horde mode mod? I really want the devs to implement it into the game officially.
Quake 1 style game yes please!
So glad MS owns Bethesda now, great get!
Straight after Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax, RUclips's algorithm directs me here.
Hugo and Marty, if you're reading this I believe the critique of the marauder is more of a meme than serious. He's a boss character after all. He's difficult. No need to explain or feel like you have to double down on accessibility.
Maybe at this point it's become kind of a meme but that is because, when the game came out, some people were really crying about the Marauder, and really the game as a whole, since it's definetly not a 'mindless' shooter they wanted (which i think it's great, Eternal is all the much better because of that).
what about enabling mouse and keyboard for consoles? I think a lot of players bought it expecting the game would make use of it.
54:26 Cheeky question and cheeky laughs, we really do need a classic Quake 1 revisit though. Thanks for asking the hard questions! ;)
Love this game so much. If they added arena mode it would be perfect.
Look at Microsoft IP shining 😂
the marauder was tough at first, but ID added so many different ways to humiliate them i can't wait to fight 2x at the same time. i absolutely loved the level where you walk through watching this thing being constructed and you fight it at the end, you think the level is over and well, it's not i fucking loved that level, id are still the best ;) im gunna play it through for like the 5th time when it gets upgraded for ps5
Didn't know that Doom classics had been enhanced. So great🙂. Instantly bought Doom II for my Switch.
Takeaway: I should work at id.
My dream is to work at id
damn I did not know it was standalone that's sick, especially starting off full slayer, insane!
0:11 The start.. 55:49 The end
"If you can beat the Marauder easily, there's nothing in the game you can't smash"
As someone who has been training to beat the game on ultra nightmare completely by myself without looking at guides, I can confirm this statement is completely false lol.
yep, marauders are pushovers. they're not even top 3 hardest monsters, let alone the biggest challenge in the game.
Ice grenade behind him, then 2 shots with triple rockets do the job in 3 seconds max.
@@AlexanderKoshernov Ice bomb exploit got patched quite a while ago, he doesn't turn around to look at it anymore.
Well you also have to realise that they're never mixed in with mobs of enemies outside of mods.
Trust me, when they are mixed in, they're way harder to deal with than even the doom hunter
looking forward to series x patch!
Will there be one?
I really just want to know where the Switch version is.
It's coming soon apparently !
@@Daletyr I just saw the article from Nintendo Life lol. I finally have a purpose!
@@gamesjernst6563 Yes i saw the article too ! Glad to see that Switch player will finally have the game ahah
So, the experience is going to be like for example in WoW if you bought your max level character from Ebay you have no idea how to use iit but you'll be badass with the one you leveled up from the zero yourself.
Doom Eternal is a masterpiece 👌
I'm glad Andrew Hulshult is on board with Doom. The guy is very good at what he does.
Now is a Microsoft Game Studio !
Holy shit, Marty Stratton and Hugo martin! This was an awesome interview, and doom eternal kicked ass!! Loved the interview thanks for this
/The Thing/ is a curious example, deeper than intended, because Carpenter's version isn't the original.
So will this now be an Xbox exclusive after all id software is now owned by xbox?
I don't think just yet but in coming years we d be seeing more exclusives for green team
I think the most probably thing that's gonna happen is the next DooM being Xbox/PC only
this aged like milk
i wish they will do a reboot of Quake next that would be so freaking awsome :D
Oh man, I wish if id software makes their engine accessible for free like Epic doing with Unreal Engine! I really want to put my hands on it!
normally companies spread talent around. Here ID has all the talent. and Bethesda itself just keeps fucking up in every way possible :P
We need Arcade Mode and more Master Levels
Note to the devs: Doom pros like Zero Master and FrostyXen can handle 6 marauders in an arena full of heavies and supers quite well. Also, marauders with gargoyles are the worst!
This is all candid and great but... WHERE'S INVASION?!
Guys you should simplify your video titles, this one looks like an xbox console name x)
wa wa wa wa wa waa

WHERE IS RAY TRACING!?!
Was really hoping to hear something about the ray tracing they were touting before Eternals launch 🙁
We want a reboot of good old Quake!!!
Oh I hope that after all the DLCs iD will make a new Singleplayer Quake. Just think about what these guys can do. Doom Eternal was simply amazing but I think they should move to another IP.
This game took me out of depression playing as the Slayer against hordes of demons now I apply that irl just face whatever the fuck comes at your way
I love these guys!!!!
These guys are great
Love u, ID
Not watched yet but I hope the ray tracing is being added soon.
Same. But I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't coming at all.
I was able to complete Doom 2016, on Hurt me plenty, but I had to stop playing the new one. The difficulty was too ramped upon it vs 2016. So it's a game I wish I was good at, but won't touch anymore. I don't hate it like I did & do with Demon Souls, but It was too hard, for me anyway.
maybe you don't have the coordination
Get good
@@wodensthrone5215 Get a clue. I wasn't complaining, I was just giving my input that it ended up being too hard for me.
