this has happened before with Johnny Depp too, some older woman was sending money to 'Johnny Depp' she realized it was a scam, so she wanted to sue Johnny Depp (the real one) because she blamed _him_ for some reason. like she figured Johnny Depp is liable because his likeness was used for the scam while he never even knew she existed. complete madness.

That's a flawed thought process. I've dated a model and I've also dated....how do I put it.... people who could never be a model. While looks can be important I'm too old for that to be the deciding factor. Js
Not the healthiest logic at all and completely agree. Personality and how someone makes you feel 100% beats th out of looks. Without getting unnecessarily deep, it boils down to my own comfort with my physical health. Props to the girlies/gents who have the confidence 👏 😊
I’d love to read psychology studies on people who are susceptible to catfishing. There has to be a common type of mentality or trauma that affects how they respond and believe others.
Her pulling out the trauma excuse pisses me off so much. Miss ma'am, you are an adult. Its your reaponsibility to work through your crap and seek help. Not use "trauma" as a sheild to excuse all your actions.
OMG! I agree with this so much, everyone who uses their "trauma" as an excuse for poor behavior are annoying. You are responsible for working through it and overcoming the ways it affects your life. Just like we are responsible for our own triggers, identifying them and using tools to keep them from consuming us.
As someone with a lot of trauma & mental health issues: I always say it's an explanation, not an excuse. Sometimes I say or do something that is a result of past trauma or my current mental state, but I'm working on it and it has gotten better. As soon as you know your triggers and/or recognize your bad behaviour, you should work on it and not just excuse it with trauma & carry on like before.
Yes! My 9 yo step daughter went through a lot of trauma with her bio mom. We have her in therapy, but also teaching her not to use her trauma as an excuse. I feel like late generation millennials and gen z started the whole "my trauma is my excuse" movement. It's not right
@@Fire-Rabbit87they didn’t. It was actually boomers and genx using their trauma as an excuse to neglect or abuse their kids (water-hose drinking, beatings with objects, toughing it out, etc). Gen y & z get therapy and call out the behavior more often than not. Obviously outliers exist in all groups, but the average knows better and does better (hence the major rifts in generational communication)
I feel bad for Dacre Montgomery the actor, he’s actually such a kind, down to earth guy. He’s Australian like myself too, never heard of a single bad interaction from him. My friends met him a few times, absolutely adored him; I hope he doesn’t see this.

My aunt is getting catfished right now. First by Kevin Costner , and now by Luke Bryan. Both me and my step mother have tried to convince her they are scammers. She wont believe us. Weve tried showing her Dr. Phil episodes about this, news articles. She wont believe us. She is even debating selling her trailer to send him money to "get a home for them". Im so worried shes going to lose everything. She is 67.
Hopefully when she sells it, you all don’t let her move in, cause she will get even worse at that point, cause that’s when she will start stealing your stuff with the “Luke is rich, I’ll just buy all this stuff back and they will never know once we are together”
@Dragondan1987 my step mother and I both said if she does this she isn't living with us. I have two children and a husband and two cats. One child is autistic. I have enough on my plate.
Dacre and Liv have been together since 2017 and got engaged in 2023……. This person is oblivious 😂. When the scammer starts asking for gift cards, that’s a huge sign it’s a scam😂. Also, at some point you have to take a look at yourself and wonder what are the chances a celeb is actually talking to me? They interacted on REDDIT😂. You have ZERO PROOF that they are who they say they are.
all of these people getting catfished are so dumb. its so obvious these are scams! I am sexting with Pedro Pascal on Facebook and he told me to beware of scammers
I think these types of scams work so well BECAUSE of how obvious they are. If someone is gullible enough to fall for something so obvious, they're gullible enough to be manipulated into doing anything!
@@theop00 this. I watch a lot of videos about scams and that's the biggest sign. They'll often have grammar errors or be too good to be true. If you're willing to look past that, you're considered an easy target.
I was once in a target and was approached by a guy try to sell me clothes. They were in a target bag and still had the tags on them. He said he had receipts and said the clothes were worth $100. He would sell them to me for $50. He said he got the clothes for his birthday but they were not his style. He said I could return for cash and keep all the money. I asked him why he did not return the clothes and get the full $100 since he had the receipt. He just said he did not want to have the hassle. He was not a very good scammer. I took a pass
He could at least claim he and his old college friends got permanent bans from all target locations and he can’t ask his relatives because they’d figure out he’s returning their gifts.
9:40 Catfish fan here, there was a couple episodes like that but the one that stuck out most to me was one where a girl was cheating on her gf/fiancé with a random girl she met on an IMVU lesbian chat room, it ended with them going to catch the catfish, getting stuck in a blizzard in the middle of the nowhere and the catfish to end up being the fiancé in the first place trying to gain her interest again.
Let’s be real these people know they’re being scammed, that’s why they reach out to these catfish investigators. They just need someone to tell it to their face and show proof. They get so blinded by the attention they get from the scammer that they lose touch with reality.
I love how they just throw words like "toxic" and "trauma" like man...something. Like, those words don't mean "stuff I don't like" and it really feels like most people use those words that way anymore.
The husband being a toxic person could be true, but we don't have the full story, and also, I have the suspicion that the "toxic and controlling behaviour" was more akin to him disagreeing with her bullshit...
It could go either way really. It could be that he wasn't really toxic and her perception was just "he doesn't give in to my ridiculous demands, therefore he is toxic". On the other hand, people tend to end up in patterns, and a lot of people who fall for scams fall for them precisely BECAUSE they've gone through a string of toxic relationships that have warped their perception of romance and that stopped them from spotting the red flags. Like the scammers jumping immediately to "I love you" within a short interaction and then mooching money off of you doesn't seem so strange if several of your IRL boyfriends have done exactly the same thing.
24:37, the episode is doing nonlinear storytelling. She's saying the scammer started complaining about their toxic relationship first, then she responded with her own stories. Scammer was the one who started telling her that the things her hubby was saying/doing were ab*sive.
What is giving these people the self confidence to believe that a good looking, well loved millionaire would reach out to them of all people to date? These people could have anyone in the world. Why would they choose you? Is it delusion? Desperation? Just pure stupidity?

Desperate people overlook plain details. I catfishes my ex best friend and as far as I could tell he fell head over hills. Even though I recycled the same classic photos and refuses voice and video calls.
One thing I've noticed from watching the Catfish videos is that a lot of the victims have a history of abusive relationships. I think they're vulnerable to being scammed, because they don't have a sense of what a healthy relationship is. The scammers are nice to them and that's enough to pull them in.

What’s sad is the show treating this woman like a victim. Already, the biggest elephants in the room, other than herself, is the fact she considers her supportive husband “toxic”, complains about limited funds access, gives large sums of money to a stranger rather than focusing on her own daughter, and worst of all, she refuses to accept responsibility of her own flaws. I do hope the husband gains custody of the daughter cuz this woman is definitely not fit to be a mom, nor does she care about the values of others except for herself.
I agree, but I think the producers of the show do so, so these people reach out to them to share their story. The lady even said something along the lines of; "That's why I got ahold of you guys~" I they were more honest/vindictive towards these people, I don't think they'd ever have people reaching out to them for these stories to begin with. Personally, I'd still try and find a way to educate/point out their wrongdoings, so that (at the very least) they're more aware of their actions, but (perhaps) these people know what they did was wrong/fucked up and are just too ashamed to admit it. Hard to tell sometimes, esp. with these shows.
The biggest red flag was the lack of face cam, no matter the excuse, if you can't prove you are who you say you are then you aren't and I'd block them. Also if the forum allowed one to report people for pretending to be celebrities I'd add on that too!
The question is why do people believe they will be DM'ed by a celebrity through a secret account? My favorite artists constantly post fake accounts on their stories who've messaged people to try and get something from them as a warning, but the question is, why are people falling into these traps to begin with??
There was a guy from my hometown who thought he was in an online relationship with Shania Twain 😂😂 I can understand older people being scammed like this but it blows my mind when younger people actually fall for this.
It’s emotional vulnerability they prey on! My aunt fell for it a few years ago too. 27:08 don’t forget she has a daughter she didn’t even consider. I have trauma and as I have told my husband, trauma isn’t an excuse to treat someone else badly or do bad things. We all have a choice. We can get better and be better or be a perpetual victim and be awful.
If you still don't understand you're being scammed when they start asking you for gift cards, there is no hope for you. She is the reason why scams are still successful.

Her use of "trauma" as an excuse instead of taking accountability fot her lack of common sense just really got under my skin.
ive noticed it a LOT with these female "victims" of celebrity catfishes. like they love throwing trauma and the scammer being toxic and manipulative to cover up the fact that THEY were cheating and they were being so delusional as to think a celebrity would reach out and try to be in a relationship with them. The main character syndrome is insane
Call me old fashioned, but I'm gen X, not everything is Trauma. Being too stupid to realize you're being scammed is not traumatic- it's being STUPID!!
@@rebeccablackburn9487 It can very well be traumatic to people! Scams can be very obvious to us, but it doesn’t mean they’re obvious to others, that’s why they still exist. These scams can take everything away from someone, it’s extremely depressing.
Not defending this lady though, she had a life with her husband and her child, and she threw it away because of a celebrity crush. That’s no excuse for anything, even if she’s being scammed.
Something I’ve seen more than once is ADHD being used to entirely explain emotional immaturity and lack of self awareness 😞 my man is definitely on an ADHD spectrum, but jeez some people just aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed and don’t like, accept it? 🙈

this has happened before with Johnny Depp too, some older woman was sending money to 'Johnny Depp' she realized it was a scam, so she wanted to sue Johnny Depp (the real one) because she blamed _him_ for some reason. like she figured Johnny Depp is liable because his likeness was used for the scam while he never even knew she existed. complete madness.

I’d love to read psychology studies on people who are susceptible to catfishing. There has to be a common type of mentality or trauma that affects how they respond and believe others.
The subject could certainly use some more studies
It's not right
@Fire-Rabbit87 not true. Previous generations do the same. They just don't call it trauma.

He could at least claim he and his old college friends got permanent bans from all target locations and he can’t ask his relatives because they’d figure out he’s returning their gifts.

Like the scammers jumping immediately to "I love you" within a short interaction and then mooching money off of you doesn't seem so strange if several of your IRL boyfriends have done exactly the same thing.
i like how the scammer's profile pic is just a scene from Stranger Things just to really reinforce that it's totally the guy from the show lol

The lady even said something along the lines of; "That's why I got ahold of you guys~"
I they were more honest/vindictive towards these people, I don't think they'd ever have people reaching out to them for these stories to begin with.
Personally, I'd still try and find a way to educate/point out their wrongdoings, so that (at the very least) they're more aware of their actions, but (perhaps) these people know what they did was wrong/fucked up and are just too ashamed to admit it. Hard to tell sometimes, esp. with these shows.

Ken you’re right there was an episode of Catfish on MTV where she was getting catfished by her own boyfriend or husband living in the same house !
