    I love 4B. And 4H. My favorite pencils are these two grades. Different brands even. I just love writing and making light marks with 4H, and gently sketching with 4B - if I can have just a single pencil for the rest of my life, it’d have to be my lovely carpenter’s pencil-shaped 4H. Love it! And the flat and wide side is awesome for shading in areas. And it’s encased in a cool unvarnished wood that has patina from my hand oils and smudges, makes it my own.

      this reads as stark classism. hopefully you’re not insinuating that only people with money should have access to information 🤮

    Am HB is considered the best all around pencil, which is why it's the standard pencil on all the racks in stores, and the standard school pencil. There isn't much you can't do with an HB, whether it's writing of sketching. As an artist, I need a wider range of pencils in order to make life easier. My most used range is from 4H to 6B. I do occasional use a higher H pencil, but not often. A 8H is pretty common, and sometimes a General's 9XXB, but when I need something that dark I'm more likely to use a black colored pencil, or even a carbon pencil.
    Even with mechanical pencils the range is about the same. I have four 0.5 Pentel P205 pencils loaded with 4H, HB, 2B, and 4B, and two clutch pencils loaded with 5.6mm lead in 6B and 8B. 2B is the most commonly used pencil for most artists, and for most experienced writers, but an artist simply needs a wide range, or the limitations make doing anything other than simple sketches, or very selective drawings, much harder and more time consuming.

    Let me guess that your light came from the right. It made the 9B look brighter than the 2B and 3B. But good video =)

    from what I read F stands for firm.

    • @scicx
      @scicx 4 года назад +2

      Perfectly right. "Fine" has no meaning in the pencil world.

    • @jamesaritchie1
      @jamesaritchie1 2 года назад

      @@scicx It depends entirely on who makes the pencil, and what they say it should be called. Just as there are no standards for softness, there are also no standards for what to call a pencils. Most agree on the number scale, but not the gradient within that scale, and some call an F pencil "firm", and others call it "fine". But "firm" is certainly the most common. Still. I've had companies say both terms are correct, so I don't worry about it.
      Personally, I love the fact that there are no standards. If there were, every pencil brand would be like every other pencil brand, and that would be a disaster. My favorite single brand is General's, but I have F, H, 2B, and 4B pencils from several brands because each gives me a little difference in tone without having to put too much pressure on the pencil.
      The problem with trying to get a wide range from a single pencil, such as the 4B, is that the dark side of the scale requires too much pressure and this results in shine, which the light side doesn't cover toothy paper at all. I learned about forty years ago that it's best to limit how much out of its natural range you push any pencil. This is why I have select pencils from several brands. I use them all, each according to what it gives me without being pushed.

      It's darker than graphite but functions like a graphite pencil. This one or a Prismacolor Ebony pencil is really all you need. learn to make 10 values from light to dark with one and you won't need a set of H and B graphite pencils.
