Thank you for the step-by-step review of the crawler settings with this ESC. I appreciate your video so much. I am working on my first RC crawler build-TRX4 Sport. 🌻
Hi Jan. Thanks for the comment. Greatly appreciate it. TRX-4 Sport is a great RC to start the hobby. I have a playlist with easy mods to make it into a great crawler, so check out the following playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLdzm4R8gmSJuO6u0smNYbhEulF_6OsNiy
Great video, just found one thing wrong with it. When programming the ESC you do not need to have the transmitter on. When you plug in the program card it cuts power to the receiver so there is no need for the transmitter to be on. Enjoyed you video, keep up the good work. 👍🏻
@Ken Design Thank you very much for your comment. I appreciate it that you took time to provide a feedback. I just want to be clear that the crawler settings are slightly different than the default values in the manual. I started with default value as well and then adjusted to my style of driving and provide reasons as to why I chose them. I hope you found that information helpful. I have used this setting for over two years including on my LCG Cheater Rig plus on 5 other rigs, and I find that it works well for my style of driving.
Glad to hear. The settings work really good for me, but you should custom taylor to your needs. Use my settings as a basis, and try different things and see what you prefer. Good luck.
A while back while editing the description, I accidentally deleted the whole description including the write up on the settings, and forgot to retype that in. Thanks for reminding me.
@@BigSungHobbies i ordered one from banggod with dumborc transmitter. Waited for few days to ship here in U.K. Then i got an email that shipping will be moved because the 1080 is out of stock. 😩
Wouldn't option 7 and 8 be deactivated anyway in crawler mode? (forward and reverse) as the only braking you have is drag brake so adjusting those settings would have no effect until you put it basher mode (forward/brake/reverse)
You would think so, but they still had it option 7 and 8 selected even in crawler mode. The setting that have worked, so I never really paid further attention to it.
Option 7 and 8 are not deactivated. However, because you have drag brake at 100%, there really is no need to ever use the brake function on your transmitter. I still set mine up as if the esc were being used in a basher so, I don't have to change those settings if I switch vehicles.
Very helpfull. Question. I have a very low geared scx 10 ii crawler. Which setting for a smooth, very slow take off with brushed motor? Thanks so much.
@@BigSungHobbies changed some of my settings to yours...works good so far. I was changing mode 13 a few times after watching your video and Holmes Hobbies video on settings...interesting to see the changes making one change at a time.
Great vid! Do you run these same settings in your trx4? I just installed mine today on my sport. Ran it on factory settings. Nice esc! I’ll have to adjust the braking. It wanted to roll end over when going down very steep hills whenever I came off the throttle.
HW 1080 is great ESC. And yes, I run the same settings on TRX4 Sport as well as on my Gspeed Element and Element Trailrunner. On Sport, you need a bit finer control then the Element though. One thing if you can check the weight distribution that might also give a bit more insight.
@@BigSungHobbies I weighed the vehicle. 60% front. I was able to use 3mm nylon nuts to fasten the rear shock tower as you suggested so that way I could remove the battery tray. I then mounted a 2200 3s on the front chassis rail. No brass or heavy wheels so total weight is 2660g rtr with 1600g front 1060g rear. I think the more I drive it the better it’ll be. I’ll try your settings. Thanks!
@@micaelacarter4971 2660g is awesome weight for it, and to boot at 60/40. Congrats! The nice thing about HW1080 is so easily programmable. Try a setting and tweak it as you see fit, and find one that works for you.

You didn’t change the settings on ESC, but it is working after shutdown of 15 minutes, so I don’t think that’s it. All of my crawlers are on 16k, and I have not run into the issue. If you press the set button for too long it goes into manual program mode. I wonder if you somehow got into that mode. Maybe email HW customer service to see what they say.
You have to match the ESC to the type of motor you get. The 1080 ESC will work with all the brushed motors; however, if you get a brushless motor, then you will need to get an ESC that is designed for brushless motor such as Castle Mamba X (or Micro X depending on the vehicle weight), or Castle Sidewinder 4. There are others like Axe brushless that comes in combo package. As for programming, depending on ESC they might come in programmer's card or some even use bluetooth. Hope that answers the question.
Some motors are reverse direction. For Element Enduro motor I did not have to swap the wires, but on Titan motors from Traxxas, I believe you have to swap the wires to ensure it works correctly.
I don’t know the exact number, but I think it was at low end of 3v per cell. Unless you are comp’ing all the time, I would recommend at least Medium setting which I believe is around 3.4v per cell, but don’t quote me on it.
The easiest way to understand is to use a bicycle example. On a Fixie (non-freewheel), as the wheels roll, the pedals will also turn. Basically the gear is engaged at all times. On a regular bike with freewheel, you can cruise and rest your legs as the pedals will stay stationary. This applies to RC cars as well. For regular vehicles, the recommendation is to disable this function. With it disabled, your vehicle can have quick acceleration Since the gear is engaged, it translates to immediate response to your throttle. For a crawler (simulation model), the recommendation is to enable freewheel. With it enabled, your crawler can have better linearity during a low-speed running and also less heat.
I am not the best person to answer your questions as I am not too techy. I believe drag brake is applied when you let go of throttle. The freewheel seem to apply when you pull on the throttle on the start up. Slightly different scenario as I understand it. You can always test both, freewheel enabled vs. disabled, and see the difference yourself.
Freewheeling on this esc is using a Mosfet to act as freewheeling diode. It allows drag brake to be active while using throttle. Active drag, synchronous rectification, on throttle drag, there are a few other names. For crawling, turn on freewheeling
