Affirmative. Synth snobs the word around should watch this and the Cre8 Audio Phil-ter reviews. Get at least half a synth voice with one purchase! I am just a newb and that’s how I found a good instructor. 😎
I am really grateful you made this video. It helped me wrap my head around a few things that other people’s explanations for simply didn’t click. Your calm and soothing voice is also enjoyable to listen to. Thanks for making this!
I’ve been fighting the urge to get into modular synths for months! Watching a ton of videos on RUclips just makes the whole thing more confusing! Gotta say this video really has cleared some of the confusion. 👍🏽🙏🏽
Don't fight it. Just embrace the dark side of synthesis. Honestly, I don't make much money, but I put what I can back all the time and have a full small inteligel palette now, and have an empty Moog 104hp case waiting for modules. The palette is focused on generative stuff. So I have a synth that plays it's self now. I'm hoping it can go shopping for me soon, and at some point, go work a damn job for me. The point I was making is you can spend little bits at a time and it doesn't take too long before you have a sweet synth. And you are obsessed with the thing. So many RUclips tutorials, so many hours on the toilet reading online manuals
Don’t fight it… just do it. Tim’s videos have been a HUGE asset to me and gave me the confidence to venture forth in this thing called modular. I went in on the Behringer 112,130,140 and 150, with a blue lantern Hermippe VCF module, now I do believe I need the Behringer 182 Module to get the desired affect I am use to.
I decided to get the 2600 so that I have the all the utilities. Now I can just get the reinforcing modules that take me where I would like to go sonically.
Nice video concept. It's definitely a great paradigm to start with. The 3 module setup you use is a perfect example, as is the classic "D set" that Roland suggested back in the day (112, 121, 130, 140, 150). You can then dive off into the more complex stuff from there. Physically patching signal paths and control signals was such an important learning tool for me when I first tried the 100m. It explains things so much better than words can. Nice cases too btw. Looks very neat.
Patching was the better, more rapid why i could understand everything and learn what modules embraced your style/project, and what didn’t. Really-thanks heaps Tim!
Full disclosure, Tim. I don’t have much interest in Eurorack as I already own a good sized MU format modular. But this video is excellent. Your understanding and logical approach to the confusing world of modular is a benefit for all viewers, regardless of what gear they end up using. Subscribed.
I just ordered that sequencer module. It didn't occur to me to use it for gates. I bet it would make a dandy drum sequencer for kick and snare. You could then feed the gate output into a clock divider/multiplier to trigger your hats. I am super excited to start playing with this model. I saw a video where someone was doing audio rate stuff with the sequencer. It will be fun to experiment with the sequencer as a VCO of sorts. Looks like you get a ton of value for money in that module. I already have the system 100 module with sample & hold, rig mod, and LFO. I definitely plan on getting more system 100 modules given their price and my income level. Thanks a ton for making this video.
Tim, this is a perfect tutorial for the Behringer System 100: clear, smooth and calm and perfectly executed, both visually and content-wise - just what I needed before taking the plunge! I have now ordered a set of S100 components to start building my own System 100 setup. Thanks mate!
Tim, your videos are so amazingly useful and I love the way they are made. It's such a pleasure to watch them. I'm getting so much more out of my own Behringer system 100 now thanks to you. It's such a long time since I fiddled with the Roland ones and I only had very basic modules, so I was kind of lost in the beginning, until I watched your videos. I can see now that I could have gotten a lot more out of my old system back then than I ever thought was possible. Thank you so much for these videos.
I finally bit the bullet and started my modular journey… your videos have been incredibly helpful! These Behringer units are the direction I’m going right now, for a synth module at least. A drum/ percussion unit will be after. Thank you so much for these wonderfully helpful vids.
Lol im doing the same exact thing rn. Did you end up getting some drum modules? Im thinking of getting the snare, hihat, and kick modules from Jakes Custom Shop
Tim this is a fantastic video and just what I’ve been looking for. You’ve opened a door by providing insight and understanding. I’ll definitely start with the modules you suggest and take it from there. Really looking forward to more videos in this series. Thank you for this. Much appreciated.
Thanks for this video, I just got a eurorack and this simple setup you show here made it easier to see what you are doing then watching a video with a super sized rack.
Heard an interview with Saint Vincent recently and loved something she said.. Paraphrasing her quote “if anyone here is into modular synthesis, just know, there’s help for us… there are support groups that can help you… ” 😂 I personally don’t even own a Eurorack or module (although I own some synths, traditional instruments and midi beat devices) but continuously find myself watching videos and shopping these contraptions. They’re intriguing..
Really grateful for this video Tim, your explanation is brilliant, really break it down. I've just purchased the 100 system bundle from Andertons. Wish me luck!
Hey Tim, I want to thank you very much for your fantastic work. I'm a Bass player for nearly 35 years and during this weired times I found my love for Synthesizers. I've sold a lot of instruments and bought my first Moog Synths (Matriarch, Grandmother, Mother 32, Dfam) I decidet to buy no instruments with presets or the possibillity to save patches. I want to understand and learn how these beautifull instruments work and react. The possibillity to patch on this semimodular synths is another reason I bought them. The Subharmonicon and the Behringer 2600 are on there way after watching your very interesting Videos about those instruments. I've learned and understand so many things because youre stile of explaining things is on a very high level (even for a beginner like me). This Video is also very mindopening.
Just gotta say Tom ..thanks for these video tutorials ! .. i`ve been thinking of getting into this modular thing for a while now but have been put off by the perceived complexity of it all ..but your explanations and presentation style are a breath of fresh air !.. i`m now ready to take the plunge !...thanks again Steve
Thanks for posting this! The world of Eurorack is pretty daunting, and this video really is a great primer for starting in modular. I ended up building the same modular shown here (Behringer 110, 140, 182, and a Doepfer low cost case), and it cost me just below $400 US. I lucked out and found the case for $90 on Reverb, and ordered the modules through Thomaans. It really is great value for money, and just great fun all around. Thanks again!
What I like about this little sequencer is that you can influence the speed of the sequence with CV. I bought two of these and one controls the speed of the other.
These videos are great Tim! I think that if I get into eurorack this will be how I start. I have a brother in law with a marvelous wood shop and I have the wherewithal to build the power supplies so that would be my way around the insane cost of eurorack cabinets. Behringer modules would be my way around the insane cost of so many other modules on the market too. At least to start anyway.
Probably the most helpful video I’ve seen regarding modular synthesisers. Keeping down to three modules was an inspired choice and the way you explained the passage of sound using the patch cables really unlocked a lot of mystery. Any chance you could follow this up with showing how you can get different sounds from just these three modules or even which modules to buy next to take the sound in different directions? Overall well done Tim.
Thanks for creating this video Tim. I’m new to the euro rack and am going the ARP 2500 route as they come in. These videos will help me get to up to speed while the modules become available. Looking forward to future videos from you on this subject. Best wishes!
You have made some great videos too, I dig that movie score chill soundscape the 2500 modules do so well, and the lofi drum hits. Keep ‘em coming and thank you.
I enjoyed this so much. It also made me appreciate Range selection to 2600 style frq slider, ms2000 three layer sequencer, effects of nts1 or alesis micron. Your videos are always triggering ideas and very inspirational
People hate Behringer because of their awful business practices. It doesn’t take much digging to find people that have spoken out against the company over many years of shady activity. I like his videos too, but I would never buy a Behringer product until they have at least a few years of not stealing peoples work under their belt. Hopefully they do change, I would love to see that. Hope that answers your question 😊
That was great. Just the perfect video for a noob like me. Really appreciate that. Too many videos show a patch but never truly explain it. Thanks again!
Such a nice demo of the 110 and 140. Those where exactly the two and only Roland System 100m modules I had myself back in the 80s, together with the case and master keyboard. They were, like you said, the absolute minimum for a synth with these modules and was all I could afford because of the prices back then ;-)
Fantastic overview. Main issue with the Behringer 100 System modules is the difficulty in finding the 110, 112 and 182 in stock anywhere. First World OCD Crisis for those of us who would like the complete system! Although using one of the resonant filters as a sine wave is a good start.
Very nice introduction , sound of these modules are very creamy and spacy -endless sequencing is perfect way to enjoy them. I supplemented mine with VCF-505 for extra flavour
Wow mate, great video! Thank you so much for sharing. What a time to be alive. I've been using software VCV Rack (and reason) for a while but wanted to dip my toe back in the analogue / modular world. Wow It's changed a lot :) Great video thank you !
Tim you found the perfect cases for those Roland-esque modules. Really makes it look like the OG 100m stuff. EDIT : 11:40 and then you said exactly what I was thinking.
I just ordered a 110, didn't think to check about the 1v/octave. There's no specific input for it like on other oscillators and nothing in the documentation so I'm glad you cleared this up. At least it's not Hz/volt or something.
I recommend being a cheapskate like me and using the behringer 19" rack eurorack mount. Works on desktop or rack mounting, takes 5 of the 100 series modules (after adding a psu and you can easily make it prettier with some wood if u like. Under £100 from Thomann including the power supply 😃 Those boxes are cute though. Great video as always 👍😃
I need more time in the semi-modular world before even seriously considering this an an option- but this would be the place to start. Great video, great looking modules at an attractive price, and- here- great sounds. Thank you- I think...
I hope you earn something from doing this, you are so educative! And as a keyboard player myself, it’s interesting to hear your perspective on eurorack. Thank you.
Cool, a nice and small but complete synthesizer in a box. Please keep on making videos like this for beginner in modular synthesis. Using a Doepfer A-156 Quantizer would make it much easier to set the tuning of the sequencer-steps. You have some TC Electronic gear in your studio. The polytune guitar tuner will work well for this purpose. Hope that Behringer releases a quantizer for the 100 series. A combination of dual sequential switches and dual quantizer would be nice. Thank´s for your video and inspiration.
Thanks to watching this video I did buy a 110. Really good stuff Mr. Tim. Very helpful and you've taught me a lot. I'm getting learning a ton information from. Also those little box racks are perfect for what I'm planning. Thanks so much. Your are the man.
19:30 Tim you didn't mention it but the input modulation signal for the VCF and VCA are commonly connected. I notice this is true of many other modular Analog Synths such as the ARP 2500 and ARP 2600 series.
Bought one of the modules just to check the quality, cheap enough to try it out. Have the 173, tons of multiples. Very good quality. Now I need to grab that sequencer if I can find it.
Worth every minute of time watching this video soo much to be learned from this great example of an educational video. And add to that some great sounding music!
🙏 Ti ringrazio di vero ❤️. Mi hai illuminato su un Mondo Meraviglioso, con parole semplici esaustive e professionalità. P. S ( Adoro, cresciuto con atmosfere Tangerine D.) Thank s.... 💥
At age 51 I never had the guts to try modulars out, while in recent years going to the software synth side. This is a brilliant introduction in modular synthesis and I quite understand now the different approach making music this way instead of fiddling with thousands of presets. Thx a lot for this one, Tim!
I think the best module you ve got is the “Stella Artois “ in the beginning of the video🤩 It puts CV and Gate in you body and modulate you in good mood 😂 Have another one for me 😎 “The best starter modular video “ in RUclips ! Thanks
Watching this video is like watching you bake a cake and conduct scientific experiments at the same time ( in the best possible way!) it’s like the intersection of science and art!
Worth noting for a first setup, Behringer has released their version of TipTop's HAK and undercut their price. So for $100 USD you can get an 84 HP "case" (actually just rails with 19" rack ears that double as a stand) with a 4 HP power supply, leaving you space for 5 System 100 modules. Add a KeyStep and you could have a relatively complete setup for $750 or so.
I think it is about time that they change the definition of Quality in the dictionary to: Tim Shoebridge. Thanks for your inspirational videos, you are a true master.
Nice, there it is. Already got the 110 too by now! Getting started with my planned duophonic Synthesizer... already bought too much stuff to make it complicated... 😅
beautiful intro jam. Points docked for the lack of deep space imagery though. :) Addendum after watching more: Al the sound examples you played were lovely.
possibly one of the best introductory videos on modular synthesis & the basics of synthesis in general available on youtube
The first 3 mins of synth music is some of the most pleasing I've heard in a while. Thanks
Affirmative. Synth snobs the word around should watch this and the Cre8 Audio Phil-ter reviews. Get at least half a synth voice with one purchase! I am just a newb and that’s how I found a good instructor. 😎

This is by far the best introduction to modular ive seen. Havent had the confidens to try it out more seriously. This series is great. Thank you.
My first aproach to modular was the Junkie XL series on his 5U wall; great tubes, too complex tho. This one is great and simple, thats true

How could anyone give a shoebridge video a thumbs down? All his videos are great

Such a nice demo of the 110 and 140. Those where exactly the two and only Roland System 100m modules I had myself back in the 80s, together with the case and master keyboard. They were, like you said, the absolute minimum for a synth with these modules and was all I could afford because of the prices back then ;-)
Thank you. That's it. For abnormally useful (and interesting) content on RUclips!
Fantastic overview. Main issue with the Behringer 100 System modules is the difficulty in finding the 110, 112 and 182 in stock anywhere. First World OCD Crisis for those of us who would like the complete system! Although using one of the resonant filters as a sine wave is a good start.
This was absolutely amazing! I am getting into music again after a 15+ year long hiatus. This was truly inspirational!
How's it going?
Very nice introduction , sound of these modules are very creamy and spacy -endless sequencing is perfect way to enjoy them. I supplemented mine with VCF-505 for extra flavour
I was really hoping you were going to cover this module. Thanks!! Awesome video, as always!
great video, re-awoke my love of modular synths even though I made one of my own and have been working with and designing them for years, well done!
The 110 is a great sounding oscillator. Fantastic video Tim. Thank you much.
wonderful video for beginners. clears pretty much how to start the 100

Tim you found the perfect cases for those Roland-esque modules. Really makes it look like the OG 100m stuff. EDIT : 11:40 and then you said exactly what I was thinking.
It's refreshing to see a gear head that is also a proper musician making great music.
Nice. Love the huge sounds you pull out.

And as a keyboard player myself, it’s interesting to hear your perspective on eurorack.
Thank you.
Great video, I found this really helpful. You've got an excellent way of explaining modular synthesis. Thank you!
Very well explained the basics of synthesis! Looking forward to the sequels.
Is this a Stella Artois @ 14:16 😄 I got hooked on Synth thru my TD-3 and TD-3-MO and now I'm curious to see what's next. Great video👍
Very Informative and Enjoyable Have a Nice Xmas Tim🎅
Cool, a nice and small but complete synthesizer in a box. Please keep on making videos like this for beginner in modular synthesis. Using a Doepfer A-156 Quantizer would make it much easier to set the tuning of the sequencer-steps. You have some TC Electronic gear in your studio. Thanks to watching this video I did buy a 110. For my wind synth, using my Neutron for converting pitch and breath to CV the 110 really is a synth in one module because the breath replaces the envelope.
I haven't really explored the 110 properly yet because I got into a rat-hole of comparing the Neutron's CV conversion to my other converters - it's actually the best I have because it handles legato input nicely and for pitch bend it doesn't have a dead spot around the midpoint.

I saw quite a few eurorack videos, but this is definitly first time I really got interested. Your simple case "wholesynth" setup is awesome!
🙏 Ti ringrazio di vero ❤️. Mi hai illuminato su un Mondo Meraviglioso, con parole semplici esaustive e professionalità. P. S ( Adoro, cresciuto con atmosfere Tangerine D.) Thank s.... 💥
Thanks alot for this great demo! Inspired by your videos I decided to order a first basic set of the Behringer System 100 modules.
At age 51 I never had the guts to try modulars out, while in recent years going to the software synth side. This is a brilliant introduction in modular synthesis and I quite understand now the different approach making music this way instead of fiddling with thousands of presets. Thx a lot for this one, Tim!
I think the best module you ve got is the “Stella Artois “ in the beginning of the video🤩
It puts CV and Gate in you body and modulate you in good mood 😂
Have another one for me 😎
“The best starter modular video “ in RUclips !
Thanks
I don't really like the 3U Stella Artois, prefer the 6U version, got a much nicer sound.
Great stuff, looks so neat in that case, shame behringer themself does not sell those 3 modules in a little case like this
Or if Behringer also sold smaller, powered cases ... . ^_^
Watching this video is like watching you bake a cake and conduct scientific experiments at the same time ( in the best possible way!) it’s like the intersection of science and art!
Great! It rarely happens that I watch a 50 minute video until the end.
great great content. your channel needs way more subs. The music is FANTASTIC
Great "beginners" modular video. One of the best I've seen. Answered a lot of my questions.
Hi Tim, thanks for this video, these are exact the topics I deal with at the time :-)
Well done as always.
I like the way those modules create a nice integrated sound.
Thank you! Very nice overview!
Really nice video- great to see how these modules work.
Tim this is a great video I have been toying with a 100 for a while but just didnt know where to start ... think ive just found it
@TimShoebridge Great video, as always. Happy 20/21!
Thank you for this excellent videos Tim. Very informative!
Thank you for this, beautiful music and advice, aaand for helping to save me from throwing away a whole lot of money on a Original 😊 Kind regards
Nice, there it is. Already got the 110 too by now!
Getting started with my planned duophonic Synthesizer... already bought too much stuff to make it complicated... 😅
beautiful intro jam. Points docked for the lack of deep space imagery though. :)
Addendum after watching more: Al the sound examples you played were lovely.
