World Cancer Day 2021: Preserving fertility in cancer patients

Cancer, in not one, but its many forms, is another disease that has aggrieved millions. India Against Cancer notes that approximately 2.25 million Indians are living with cancer and that the incidence is higher in women than men. For those that have been diagnosed, chemotherapy, radiation, and hormonal therapy are among the widely used treatment options. However, they have various side-effects and also kill healthy cells alongside the cancer cells. Developments in assisted reproductive techniques such as egg and sperm freezing has taken us a step forward in ensuring that young cancer patients who wish to have children in the future can do so by preserving their gametes that would otherwise get affected.
