First of all, I applaud you for being away from your phone and or other mind-numbing screen device. Good for you. Secondly, please learn to pronounce the name correctly, it's Mercury (like merkury). Original name comes from the Greek god of speed. Or maybe you're just trying to be funny? Regardless, thanks for reminding me of my youth lol. Back in the middle 1970s, I was in a similar position as you, with the help of my parents, I bought a brand new 1977 6 hp Evinrude outboard on a 12 ft aluminum boat. I'm not sure the brand of your boat but I went with a generic at the time, a Montgomery Wards boat. I know they were made by I believe it was Smoker Craft at the time so it was a quality boat. Long story short, I got many good years out of that little boat, trying to make that thing go as fast as it could go lol. Eventually I sold it to my Aunt who brought it to Florida, and I moved up to a 16 ft Baja with an older 80 horse Evinrude. I was clearly into speed by that time so the 80 was soon replaced with a 150 Johnson with a racing prop. I don't have to tell you that was one fun boat. Yes it was only rated for a 90 horse Max but when you're in your early twenties you're not too concerned about safety ratings lol. That boat also spent some time with me and my friend in my friend's body shop. It had spent way too much time in the direct sun with the previous owner so the heavy metal flake gel coat was pretty yellowed. But after sanding it down, and a few coats of clear with some pearl additive, it took on a whole new life, especially in the sun. Eventually several years later, I traded that for a much more family-friendly Chris Craft I/O just before I got married. It may not have been as fast as the Baja, but definitely a lot more comfortable.
Thanks again for the trip down memory lane. Do me a favor, always be extra safe, not just on the water, but when you're driving as well. Take it from me, a little less than 10 years after that, I had someone force me off the road in a car accident, and have spent the last 30+ years in a wheelchair. Things can happen in a split second, so always be safe my friend. Take care -
