    1. Great Demo Andy! Seems redundant to say to Andy Martin but I want to re-state occasionally that Andy has the talent and skill to demonstrate gear like no one else. 2. I love my OX box and these pedals contain so much of what I love about it. I have 2 vintage tweeds, one brown and one vintage DR. I rely on them heavily... I also have a 2007 Vox AC30 which I don't use as much anymore. I'm so impressed with the Ruby, I think I might have to sell the Amp and just get that instead for that one flavor of amp. This demo made it so obvious.

    • @NuclearDeathWalk

      I have vintage AC30s and a CCH head and the Ruby is the first emulation I've heard that comes dangerously close to my amps being recorded. There's still some complex grind in the amps that the pedal doesn't quite nail, but honestly, I could gig with just the Ruby split into a poweramp/clean cab for stage volume and the PA and be satisfied

    It would be interesting to compare these pedals to their equivalents in the HX Stomp. You can get a used HX for under $500, so if the sound is comparable you could save $600-700 by getting a used HX Stomp.

      I disagree. The reason they started with these 3 is all of them make a great pedal platform, which is the demographic they're aiming at. The Marshall/Mesa stuff would be a great addition, but these were definitely the right amps to start with.

      @@wheelsdetroit8608 I'd be surprised if they don't. If these amps are a success (which it appears they already are) its a no brainer to add more variety to the lineup. One thing I'd add, though, is with amps that you normally set dirtier, an effects loop would probably be manditory.

  • @dylanris6209
    @dylanris6209 2 года назад +11

    Great demo, Andy. However, I'm not convinced these pedals are worth literally three times the price of a Strymon Iridium or a Walrus ACS1. I've tried out a few amp pedals (own two of them), and they're great... but they still depend heavily on an excellent speaker. I've played live gigs where I decided I'd plug my amp-in-a-box pedal right into the sound board and just hear myself through the monitor. It was a mistake. You end up at the mercy of the sound guy... and a lot of sound guys don't understand how these things work.
    To ensure good sound, you need to bring your own powered speaker in addition to your amp-in-a-box pedal. Keep that in mind when you budget for these things. Personally, I advise going with an Iridium and using your leftover money on a good powered speaker.

    • @SachaJoffre
      @SachaJoffre 2 года назад

      Hello. What powered speaker would you recommend?

    • @dylanris6209
      @dylanris6209 2 года назад +2

      @@SachaJoffre I use an Alto TS312. Runs about $250-300 but you can also find them used. Very clean sound profile with no added coloration (and that's what you want, since the amp-in-a-box pedal is providing all the coloration.)
      You could also use an existing guitar cabinet if you own one. But if you go that route, you'll need a separate amp pedal to drive the speaker. (These amp-in-a-box pedals can't do it.) For that purpose look into an EXH 44 Magnum, but remember that pedal can ONLY plug into a speaker cabinet, not a powered speaker like the Alto I recommended above.
      Hope that's helpful!

    • @glynnpowell7864
      @glynnpowell7864 2 года назад +4

      I think these are aimed at the studio musicians meant to record direct. Making the speaker irrelevant

    • @Deaddinoproductions
      @Deaddinoproductions 2 года назад +10

      They don’t cost 3x the Iridium or ACS1 if you don’t buy all 3 pedals. Most of us have a favorite style of amp that we stick with most of the time, at least for each different band or project that we’re involved in. So I would imagine a lot of people with modeling/IR pedals are often just sticking with one model the majority of the time even if the pedal has several different ones available (unless you’re playing in a cover band or something and trying to closely mimic tons of guitar sounds from lots of different bands, in which case these aren’t made for you). While everyone else is trying to be a jack of all trades, UA is just trying to put the most authentic emulation of an amp into a pedal, and I think they definitely succeeded. Regarding live sound, I don’t think a pedal like this relies any more heavily on a good sound engineer than an amp on stage. In fact I think it’s way more foolproof (you already have a perfectly mic’d amp sound with no stage volume to compete with). This is something live sound engineers, like myself, love.

    • @dylanris6209
      @dylanris6209 2 года назад +3

      @@Deaddinoproductions These are fair points. Personally I use both the Fender and Vox settings on my Iridium, but keep both relatively clean. (I stay away from the Marshall setting, which seems to lack definition.) To me, having both those settings is really helpful, and then I add pedals as needed. So that would require 2 of these UA pedals to get the same effect (and thus twice the price). Anyway, I wish more live sound engineers were like you. I twice used an Iridium with no on-stage cabinet. The first time, I could hear myself fine in the monitor, but people in the house reported I was way too low in the mix. The second time, I couldn't hear myself in the monitor at all-all I could hear was the other guitarist, who did have an amp on stage. Since then, I've either brought my own powered speaker or gone back to using my amp head and cab (which sound better than any pedal but are obviously very heavy). But if more live sound engineers catch on to the nuances of these pedals, like you have, they'll become more viable in a live setting, and guitarists won't need to bring their own speaker.

It's a more a physical model of the actual speaker than it is just a mathematical approximation of the sound of one. They can even simulate age on it. You should check out an OX review for detailed info on what they're capable of in that front.

      Why would you expect a pedal to have a headphone jack? I’ve seen several people make this statement, and it makes no sense to me.
      I don’t use headphones at a gig, and at home I have a number of useable headphone amps in devices that would probably be way better than an internal one on a pedal.
      Having a delicate headphone plug plugged into a pedal I’m stomping on just seems like a recipe for disaster.
      Any small mixer, sound interface, laptop, or even a pocket headphone amp would do the job admirably. I use my iPad for this when I’m just playing on the couch or out on the back porch, and this also lets me record any ideas that might pop up unexpectedly. Nobody has any of these types of things available??!!?
      Also, keep in mind that a headphone amp will up the current required to run the unit if you really want to push the phones (and you probably will).
      Then the whinging about the pedal power requirements begins….

    I’m not into the high gain sounds on these. I do feel there’s too much high frequency information in the sounds overall.
    I’ve heard a lot of variety in demos of these pedals in terms of how good the sound comes off. A few sound amazing and a few sound more “flat” like this one, which I don’t understand.

      @@JayDoge Exactly! I would think the UA product will need to be significantly better at doing the one thing than the other options out there that do several. but hey... if someone really really likes (and only needs/wants) a Vox model, then there probably won't be any better options than the UA product. But for someone who needs a little more out of their $400 amp modeller, there are plenty of other options that would probably be almost as good.

    I'm not really hearing it with these pedals..... they just seem to lack a certain sweetness and depth. The Ruby sounds boxy as hell to me, not like any real AC30 I've played through. Think I'll stick to Scuffham S-Gear.

      I dunno about garbage, but certainly not up there with the best sims currently out there. They do sound a bit plasticky. And there's no excuse for not putting all 3 sims in one pedal.

      @@nicknickson3650 I'd love to see a free amp sim that even remotely touches UA. :) UA's plugin version of the Fender Tweed costs several hundred dollars and requires UA hardware costing several, several hundred more in order to run it, so this is a bargain of sorts. :) I am not going to disagree that these pedals are very costly but UA gear consistently sounds superb. I had an Iridium and sold it the instant I saw the Dream 65. Frankly, I'd pay a couple of hundred bucks just to avoid having to hook up an audio interface and pull out a phone, tablet or laptop every time I want to play my guitar.

    So, how do any/all of these compare with the Strymon Iridium? None of these have a headphone jack, that’s not so great, but genuinely would love to hear some thoughts, or even see an A/B video. Have/love the Iridium; I go into it after my pedalboard , and run it in to my UAD Apollo Twin Duo MkII, which I also am happy with. Seems like the three amp/three cabs each/nine total variations of the Iridium is kinda hard to beat, but otherwise, any thoughts?

    • @FakeGlasses
      @FakeGlasses 2 года назад +4

      These better blow the iridium and ACS1 away, otherwise you're paying the same amount of money for one of these as the iridium, which does all three amps with three cab options each. And even if they do, was it really not possible to put all three amp types into one pedal?

      These also have a boost function plus Tremolo and reverbs . Artist presets opening up other tones plus the ability to run 4 cable method defeating the amp SIM .
      They are also stereo which means they contain 2 separate modelled amps in each unit 😮👍
