Fighting Ignorance In America! Why A HAM, GMRS, or CB Radio Are Better Than A Cellphone / Smartphone

  • In this video I reveal my solution for fighting ignorance and stupidity in America and rehabilitating people that are less smart. In this first installment I discuss how we (people that aren't ignorant) can all come together to fight ignorance in The United States, by educating those that are less fortunate than us when it comes to brains and I.Q. Then, by coming together we may someday witness our collective dream of an America without Ignorance. In this episode we will use the example of ignorant people claiming that a cell phone or smartphone is just as good as a two-way radio (ham, GMRS or CB), and that having a ham radio, GMRS radio or CB radio is a waste of time and money because to talk with other people, everyone just uses their smartphone. Please join me in my cause to fight ignorance!

#6 After the initial equipment purchase of a 2-way radio, you do not have to pay for monthly service to use your 2-way radio. After the initial equipment purchase of a cell phone, you have to pay for monthly service in order for your cell phone to work.
#7 In the event of your death, arrest, or companionship with a overbearing snooping partner, no one can go into your 2-way radio to see who you communicated with or what you communicated about. You have no need for a trusted friend to delete your 2-way radio history to avoid embarrassment or criminal charges.
#8 If you want a newer 2-way radio, you don't have to switch over a sim card or notify a service provider. If you're really good, you don't even have to notify your significant other.
#9 If you are feeling extra lonely, with a 2-way radio, you can EASILY talk to multiple random men at the same time. There are always groups of random men just eager to gang-talk you out of your loneliness.
#10 In a shit-hits-the-fan shituation, especially with ham radio, you will have no problems at all relaying your medical emergency or that mushroom cloud in the sky, because random men involved in ham radio have a century's worth of experience talking about ailments and weather.

To know one’s intent is to know their animalistic nature. We are social beings, and often driven by pride, we follow our need to be social accepted in our social circle (ham radio clubs). They often know the truth, but cling to their thinking due to their insecurities and pride. It’s how they define themselves, and when one challenges their hobbies, they pull on their insecurities based on how they define themselves. All ability of learning and humility stops at this point and turns to pure negative emotion.

In NC, at the junction of I95 and 64, to get on northbound 95 from 64 east bound requires a fairly tight turn. It was marked at 25 or 30 mph, but the sign was far enough into the corner that you might be on two wheels by the time you saw it. Lot of truck accidents there. To get on southbound 95 you could run at 70 no problem. Point is: I saw a truck barreling into that low speed corner at 70+ mph. Got on the cb and simply said ‘truck getting on 95, slow down! That corner is tight’ About a minute later, the trucker gave a ‘i dont know who told me to slow down, but you just saved my bacon. I dont know what I was thinking.’. We chatted for a minute, he was used to running the southbound ramp, didnt realize how tight that north bound ramp was. Not like a cell phone could have helped there. Plenty of other instances where truckers or cb operators warned others of accidents, road hazards or traffic jams that would have been hard/ impossible to do on a phone.

Two winters ago very many trees went down and took out power lines and phone lines while blocking roads. Many of the town folks were trapped by deep snow and blocked roads. We had zero help from any emergency services. We were out of power for 10 days but many of us had generators but no communication with each other or outside services. I didn't like this so I started the radio service " Gold Main Radio Service " and we have several people now who can keep in touch with other via UV5R GMRS radios because all you need is a radio and a voice.

For the last 20+ years we have used CB radios to communicate in our group. This would include directions, road obstacles, car issues, etc. This year we are upgrading to GMRS radios, due to the better quality and the fact that several other Miata Car Clubs have already migrated. BTW: we do NOT use cell phones, as we need to communicate instantly with a large number of vehicles.

Thanks Randolfo. I took my Baofeng handheld to the Thai restaurant near my house and the women there were super impressed. They informed me that Baofeng radios are made in Thailand and gave me some extra food. I wouldn't have thought to take my GMRS handheld to the restaurant without watching your videos.

The most use I get from two way radios has been while canoeing/kayaking/sailing: forget cell phones, too complicated, fragile, one person at a time, out of coverage… waterproof and floating marine radios will keep a group connected.
Supposedly there might be a licence required but I could not figure out how to get it so I gave up.

I think you nailed it in many ways. Two way radio needs no infrastructure, unlike the massive ones used in cell phones. Nature is its infrastructure. Reliability is key. No cost to use is nice too.
In terms of FRS, people in a whole neighborhood, subdivisions and/ or mobile home communities etc. can actually stay in contact with each other. In terms of GMRS, folks in a good sized town can stay connected. With a well placed repeater in favorable terrestrial conditions, families can easily talk up to 60 miles. Two way radio brings people together, locally. In real time.
Both GMRS and FRS can send data including text and geo-location, so smart phones can still communicate off grid.
For Citizen Band radio, I'll defer to the wisdom of an elder truck driver. He said pilots still use AM radio to communicate in the air... why shouldn't they on the road? I'll add that any driver on the road can benefit with one, be it for emergencies or road trips. Pilots don't use smart phone apps to talk to each other and for damn good reason.
Finally, these radio services - FRS, GMRS, CB Radio - these are YOURS as an American. They don't belong to a multinational conglomerate or a big tech giant. It's ours. Free (for the most part) to use. Few countries allow their citizens the right to the airwaves as anyone. Very few. I dare say two way radio might be one of the most patriotic investments you and your community could make! ;)

2 way radios are way better when you are on a paddle trip in the middle of nowhere with no cellphone service. The ability to instantly warn others of dangers like a downed tree across the river would be impossible. Even if you had service, waiting for somebody to answer their phone, they could be in the tree before you got the warning out.
I appreciate this channel immensely as I embark on a 3- day 37 mile paddle trip tomorrow. Great information provided in a way that doesn’t bore you. Without this channel, I doubt I would have gotten into GMRS.

I bought several multipack frs radios and gave to a few family’s in my neighborhood to use for various events . One such time was my friends who have three young children went to the beach. They had one radio and each kids had their own. The kids enjoyed this new found method to pester mom and dad and each other.🤣 But with the ambient ocean noise the parents were able to call the kids in where otherwise they may not hear mom and dad’s voice without the radio. And as an added bonus usually there is a NOAA WX radio built in so they can keep abreast of impending bad wx. Even though not currently used they may be a useful tool in a neighborhood watch program. Pick a seldom used channel and a tone and it should remain quiet until needed. A weekly test would be a good reminder that the radio is still there doing its job. With a group everyone will bolo for issues in their neighborhood .

I have had numerous instances where 2-way radios were necessary. 1)out in the country where no cell service exists. Most of the rural areas in America have no cell service.2) In times of natural disasters such as hurricane Katrina(yes, I was there). 3) Grid down scenario. EMP/extreme solar activity. We saw this a couple weeks ago or was it number 4) bad actors/foreign sabotage hackers bringing down networks/infrastructure. There are more, but this is enough because I have personally experienced all of these! Take care and God bless!

So, many years ago I worked on the phone systems for the SW Idaho (Boise area) LDS facilities.
I was curious about a special room in the Deseret Industries building so I had a long conversation with the manager there, here is what he told me:
At the LDS headquarters in Salt Lake, they communicate with all their regions around the country using HAM Radio, as we know, the LDS do not trust the government.
So, Deseret in Boise is the hub for this area, the churches and Seminaries all have the ability to communicate using Deseret Boise as the repeater to reach all locations.

We use BF-888 radios in the street group. Yes we have a whats-app group, but during the night nobody hears or checks it. Having the radio wakes you up in a hurry. We sit with planed load shedding and theft of power cables. In the beginning of this month we had about 1 theft every 2 days that effected this street. This is in a big city not rural town. The radio is much faster and we can communicate clearly and efficiently. I was sceptical in the beginning, but now don't move far without the radio.

They have been very useful for requests water or just so she can check on my current mental status. After 40 years in the fire/EMS service, I can tell you communication is THE first to go down by technical issues or simply overloading of the system primaril6 during snow or other severe weather event. I'll keep my cell phone handy. Right beside my GMRS radio thank you!🥶

    Two more big advantages:
    1) With two-way radio, you have "everybody on the same channel," so to speak. All members of your family or group can communicate together, which is vital during an emregency. It's cumbersome to set up something like this on a cell phone--assuming cell phones are still working, which they probably won't be.
    2) In Texas, Amateur Radio is specifically exempt from cell phone restrictions that public schools are allowed to impose. Their published Code Of Conduct will often cite the law which gives them the right to regulate RF comm devises, but they will NEVER disclose the Amateur Radio exemption that the same law spells out. [Texas Education Code, Section 37.082]
So if you want to use Amateur Radio as part of your family emergency plan, kids are allowed to get licensed and have one in public schools. (Obviously disrupting of academic instruction is now allowed, but possession and use is otherwise allowed.) Of course, there is nothing stopping a radio from having Amateur capability along other bands as well.

Hey Mr. Randy, I sincerely apologize for adding something that's really a part of your topic. Always a great job on education the non-Hams on Two-way Radios in general. I have to agree with you, whether Amateur Radio CB FRS/GMR or MURS, when SHTF come phones, systems will be useless and sometimes even in non-SHTF situation. Keep up the wonderful job Mr. Randy!
