2 separate animals... Ham Radio requires intelligence and technical experience. GMRS is a more kid friendly service that only requires a few bux so you can keep in touch with family in a small area. I noticed that your license you show looks NOTHING like any license for GMRS or Amateur Radio I have ever seen. Did you print this from a service or did you make it yourself?

H.A.M. definitely does NOT require intelligence - licensed H.A.M. operators prove that on my channel everyday with their comments.

@@TheNotaRubicon You seem to be very confrontational and have issue with people who hold higher levels of intelligence than yourself. this is evident from the video content, the way you behave in the video and lack of respect you show. To make statements like that and think your funny or smart is far from accurate, you have made sure this is my only visit to your channel and that I go away with a very low opinion of you and your thought process. good day to you and enjoy the failures you have ahead of you.

I'm surprised that people still want to use radios to communicate when cell phones will do the job. Back in the 60s it made sense to use CB and other services that were available to the general public, because long distance calls were expensive. So I'm curious why you were hoping GMRS could bridge the gap from V.B. to East TN. Do cell phones not work for this? Are they too expensive? Thanks in advance for any reply!

@@terryjwood GMRS users are people who need communications in remote areas, as in the case of off roading. There is some hobby aspect to GMRS, although some say there isn’t, that it’s just a tool. Amateur radio (ham radio), on the other hand, is a hobby. I like the idea of being able to communicate around the world autonomously, without the use of our communications infrastructure, my antenna to the other guy’s antenna.

So I was the one who gave you a hard time about one of your other videos "Should I get a ham radio license"
HOWEVER I will also give you credit for a job well done!
You were respectful and didn't bash ham radio needlessly. You gave pros and cons of both Ham as well as GMRS
(I do support both by the way) and our local club also supports and welcomes GMRS as well.
You go on Ham Radio 2.0 RUclips channel as well as others, and they don't needlessly bash you or GMRS
To me personally, I don't mind poking a little fun at the "Some People" know it all types, but I think in some of your more
recent videos over the past few years, you are giving the impression that MOST Hams are "Sad Hams"
When in reality "Most" hams in the hobby really enjoy radio, and try to be helpful, plus a good number of GMRS users are also hams.
YES Unfortunately a small percentage are "Sad Hams" ... All I ask is you mention a little more often (as you did in older videos)
Its only a few that give the good hams a bad name.

I have recently decided to get a radio for emergency situation, and came across your channel. I really appreciate all of the great info, and especially your delivery haha. I have been to a number of radio yt channels and yours is the best by far. I'm a tech guy for a living, but radios are new to me so your style is great for learning. I do plan to use the radio frequently so I get a good grasp on functionality, accessories, and proper use.
Before I came across this particular video, I had a Baofang UV-5R sitting in my Amazon cart. However, this video, and a few others I watched on other channels, made me rethink that choice. It sounds like a GMRS might suit my needs better.
Again, I'm looking for something that will allow me to listen to police/emergency-type broadcasts, communicate with friends/family, and others if there was a situation that warranted it. I do not want to chat with anonymous men from around the world, just wanted to be clear.
My question is... should I get a GMRS before the UV-5R?

I'm mainly a ham but do have a GMRS license and a couple of Baofeng GMRS radios. I typcially watch your superb videos on my TV so miss the comments. That's a shame. With all respect to your great videos, the comments are often priceless. Regarding hams liking to talk to strange men...true. I am attracted to worldwide communications and have been since my young "pen pal" days. I joined an internet pen pal thing which turned out to be some kind of place where international women find American husbands. There is some fascination with the concept of very distant communications, instant, without any infrastructure. Shortwave listening, ham, etc. I've had that for many years. No idea how to explain it. GMRS and UHF/VHF ham is practical. HF ham radio, for some, has some kind of mystique. In the past off-roading and outdoor stuff was likely the antithesis of basement-dwelling ham operators but now POTA (parks on the air) has created a very large group of hams doing their long-distance thing outdoors. Sometimes in a Jeep. It's becoming a non-binary world in more than one way.

I thought I best share this vital information so you could pass it on. Oh, and there was an ambulance call where they requested a "lift-assist" from the police/fire departments for most likely HAM operator as he was too heavy for two strong ambulance crew members to lift! RODGER BEEP!!!

Were the police using a ham radio band, or where the hams using police frequencies?

I like the characterization of HAMs as "very, very different people". The kind of understated diplomatic statement which Queen Elizabeth's staff used to use which maintained civility but told her everything she needed to know!🤣

You cannot imagine (well, probably, YOU can) how I miss this kind of humor in these politically correct days of toothless impotence when you can’t call a stupid the stupid but "alternatively smart.” This channel is an oasis.

Thank you, Randy, for this simple, excellent video! However, may I sugest (for a future video) some comparisons between 1. American GMRS and European PMR (licensed and unlicensed), as well as 2. Services like PMR and GMRS, on one side and CB, on the other side. Licensing details are interesting, but that's not all. More interesting is the efficiency when communicating (simplex or with repeaters) over long distances. Which service offers more penetration and stability (i.e. dependability)? Thank you! 😊😊

I come here for the dry sense of humor! But I have to watch the video multiple times because I always miss the important technical info because I’m laughing out loud! 😂 Or my wife interrupts me and I have to start it over! She obviously doesn’t understand how important these videos are!🤦‍♂️

Free tip: Do not get between a sad ham and the buffet line at the local Golden Corral feed-trough. Most enraged I've seen one was when we quit refilling the Ranch dressing bucket after he had already emptied it three or four times. He was fuming and shouting, "...'all you can eat', my ass!! Get the manager right now!!..."

Having just been through Helene recovery in rural NC... GMRS = nobody, silence, crickets. Ham = organized local repeater manager who was handling requests to phone others, welfare checks by some brave individuals, reading out government bulletins on the hour, and more. Bustling activity. Dispatch channels to listen to. Actual information being exchanged.
I gave a GMRS radio to a neighbor and used that like a cell phone while power and phone were out.
I got my GMRS license in February and now it is October and I'll be getting my ham license. Having witnessed how much more useful it is in emergency situations, that's a no-brainer.

At least once a year you should have a Comment Awards Show. I really try to bring my A Game to the channel as do many of us, and we demand recognition (and merch).
Maybe a trophy shaped like a hand and forearm doing that "insert" position?
Categories for Sadhams and responses, dumbest questions, dumbest sugestions (although clearly mine is a great suggestion and a contender for the best suggestion award this year), and best suggestions. Cheap Merch prizes, or,
I win and you record a very sarcastic outgoing message on my voicemail to cut down on the stupid messages that i often get.

GMRS is a good radio service. It's for the general public who want to be able to use radio to communicate locally. GMRS often ignites an interest in radio in people. Many of these go on to become ham radio operators once they come to realize that GMRS is ham radio lite.
