No where near as bad as german shepherds and Huskies! Have/had all 3 breeds and collies shed maybe half as much. Although you have to keep the collies trimmed and brushed more or they get tangled fur. Mine are all lap dogs, I love their norrow heads...although when I play with my shepherds I'm like holy crap y'all have big heads after seeing the collies lol.
My mom tells me that when I was a toddler and ran around in our large backyard that our rough collies would herd me away from the borders of our property. Princess and Jewel were wonderful dogs. So sweet and very loyal to our family. They were never fenced in and always stayed on our property.
I have owned many breeds and mixed breeds of dogs in my life, and each has had some trait I would say is the “best ever”. For my rough collie, it has to be kind and loving. There is no match for the devotion I see in his eyes! He loves to half climb into my lap (can’t fit his whole body there!) and gaze at me in a way that portrays undying loyalty. He is also very obedient, was my easiest dog to house train, and just plain wonderful! I am happy to deal with the hair for these outstanding characteristics.
They are the Perfect breed, in my opinion. I just put down my first rough at 14 yrs. I don't think any other breed will do now. Rough's spoil one for any other breed.

A fairly good but rushed film. We have had Rough Collies for 50 years. At the moment we have 3. The 3 colours that are allowed in the British show ring. They are the sable and white, the tricolour and the blue merle. I find that roughs keep very clean themselves, and yes, they do have lower doggy odour than some other breeds. I do not brush every day. I have a very wide toothed comb for general tidiness. I keep the feet clipped tidy and the fur from the lower hock at the back. It does not take too long to give a proper comb and sort out. It is all according to which tools you choose. Our 3 roughs delight us everyday. They are our family. Please do not have them if you are out all day. They love your company. They like to be loved, talked to and played with. They are the most beautiful of the breeds with a nature to match. Oh, dont bother trying shows. The dogs are lovely, but that is as far as it goes. You dont need it. Just enjoy them. Make them happy and they will return the complement.
@@exrental8696 Yes, if somebody is home. They can be sensitive to being told off. If you are cross with them, they will never forget it. No need to shout. be kind. ESPECIALLY THE LOW GRAIN however more importantly rough collies are DEADLY ALLERGIC TO IVERMECTIN WORMERS. Why do so many films and info sights miss that single MOST important piece of information I will never know.
When we got our Rough Collie, he was on a farm and was primarily used as a stud. He seemed to only be a working dog and had not had much loving experience with humans. We brought him home and started to show him his new life, which he seemed to appreciate and learned to love. We found him to be like a wild stallion and decided to get him neutered. He has settled down and is much more relaxed and extremely happy, especially when out for a walk. He is the most beautiful animal I have ever seen and his coat is silky now. He is a great pleasure! He's very affectionate and sweet, thoughtful and a great companion.
I got mine at a collie rescue. Some guy was shooting wild dogs that were about to attack him, and then noticed that they had a little pup. It turned out it was a baby collie.
We have a Rough Collie from a shelter...He makes Me laugh every day 🤗🤗He plays hard with His family..,But enjoys Riding in My Truck every day...A Gentle Soul
Had two rough collies lost one when i lost my husband so there looking after each other, my boy left looks after me we both miss the others but take care of each other What a fantastic breed
My Rough Collie has been the biggest canine challenge of my life- but she is the most intelligent, the sweetest, and so good with my son now that she is out of her puppy phase. She is amazing and I love her sooooo much
I have had 6 collies and also breed collies for a few years. It was great experience for the kids as they were growing up. It is hard when you lose the beloved collie. Ours at the moment will turn 12 in next couple months and is showing his age.
I owned 3 collies all at once in my life, they are beautiful. They tend to be barkers though. They are so sweet. High maintenence with the hair and coat. If you are one of those people who want house beautiful, this may not be the breed for you because of the hair. Most beautiful breed of dog imo. Sweet and smart and sensitive. Very loving and intelligent.
I grew up with Shelties but always wanted a collie. We just got one and Skye is on the smaller side for a girl about almost 50lbs at 10mo old. Great dog with our 5 and 1 year old gentle and affectionate and playful.
In this life I had and known no less than seven Collies. All were wonderful companions. I have two very sweet tricolor companions. I would it no other way. I believe that one can no more loving and sweet personalities.
I miss my rough collie Jordie. Lost him at 10 yrs old in 2008. Was the smartest dog I ever had. Thinking of you every day buddy and will forever miss you 😭
I know that feeling I have my first collie she's a smooth tri amazing fury baby she is I have lost a few fury babies over the years I know how you feel
@@ourfuzzypals8069 The rough Collie numbers are well down in UK. People want oodly doodlies as I call them. Or they want French bulldogs or pugs. Sorry, no beauty in those for me, but I am sure someone loves them all... We sit in the garden and admire ours playing and rough housing. No Collies... empty lonely garden.
I still miss my boy, Parker. He was a Sable colored barking machine. His hobby was herding...anything! cats, ducks, chickens, goats, cows, horses...if they roamed, he would get 'em back in a bunch. Super smart, loving, friendly yet protective & a heart as big as Texas. I never owned another dog after him💔
I can definitely vouch for their typical behaviors. Mine is only half rough collie (x border collie) but he's definitely a true collie at heart. The watchdog part is so true, my boy is very good at watching and barking but oh so scared to bite when it comes down to it. He has a big mouth but a scared little heart. It's amazing because he senses if visitors are friends, even if he's never met them, or just random strangers. And he definitely LOVES his people. I think he still wonders why we don't sit him down on a chair at the table during dinner... We go out, he must go check if the yard is secure and cat, bird, rat, car, and lawnmower free. He feels left out if we don't entertain him enough. He'll literally lick you, go sit next to you as in "look what a good boy I am", and then sing like a Husky to demand attention. He even sings in his sleep :D
I think everyone that loves dogs should have a collie at least once in their lives. I had a rough coat black, tan & white collie I raised from a puppy for 13 years and it was one of the greatest dogs I've ever known. Something I noticed about all the information I've seen about collies is that no one ever mentioned what a bonus it is to talk to your collie. When they say these animals are smart it's an understatement. Earlie on I got into the habit of talking to him like I would talk to anyone else and his reactions were something you don't see everyday. My back went out then shortly after that I fell and broke a hip. His sensitivity and companionship through all the pain I believe is what kept me alive. He was amazing. I use to tell people when they reacted to his canine intelligence that in the next life I was going to be the dog and he was going to be the human.
There's no better breed....absolutely the best dog I've ever owned. Everything said above is accurate. Sweet and gentle. Not overly affectionate, which can be a good trait. They are sensitive and do not respond well to harsh voices or commands. They do not forget. Educate yourself before bringing one home...
One fact that was left out is their personality, owning one, or better yet, two, is such a blessing. You'll be amazed at how much you laugh when you're with them.
As a Sheltie owner, EVERYONE thinks my dog is a Rough Collie 😂 I’m looking into adopting a rough collie as a companion dog for myself and my Sheltie. Since the two breeds share a lot of similar personality traits, I wanted to see if they had any major differences other than size (and sometimes aggressive Sheltie barking). This video was very informative. Can’t wait to adopt a Collie looking for a good home! ♥️
I have a 12 year old collie at the moment and she is wonderful. One of the best dogs I have ever owned. I don't know about other collies but mine suffers from hot spots and allergies, it usually pops up when the weather changes. I usually give mine some allergy medication over the counter and that seems to do the trick most of the time. I would definitely recommend owning one.
Thanks to your video, It convinced me to get a rough collie I named him Harvey he barks at wheels, balls and da vaccume. I’m surprised more ppl don’t have them!
I have such a strong and loving relationship with my dog out of my family, but he still all makes sure he hangs out with everyone equally and loves us all. He doesn’t just stick with one member. But I do have a strong relationship with my rough collie. Best dog I’ve ever had in my life, I really really really can’t imagine him passing away, I don’t think I could bare the thought
My family has had 3 over the last 40 years. Two of them rescue dogs. One was an from a lady who had to got to a nursing home. All had different personalities depending on their formultive 2 years. About the rescue dogs; I don't know why how anyone could throw out a collie or tie one to a rock out in the elements.
Hubby and I have had five collies throughout the course of our 45 years of marriage. Our home is not complete without a collie in it. When one crosses over the rainbow bridge, I can't go too long before I find myself searching for a puppy. I'm 72 years old and our current collie will be 12 this year. Sadly, he is slowing down considerably, and I wonder how much more precious time I'll have with him. Is there another collie in my future? I have no idea why there wouldn't be! (smiles) Puppies keep a person young and active. So, there you go.
I’m on my fourth. All from Marko’s Collies in Tacoma WA. Love them to death. Love brushing them; with the right technique it is a good bonding experience as well as shedding control.
I grew up with a tri, and she was like a 2nd mother to my 3 brothers and I. She crossed the bridge when I was a senior in highschool. She lived a wonderful 14 years with us. When I worked for a veterinarians office that was connected to a grooming facility, a woman who brought her blue merle headed white in to be groomed told them she needed to find him a new home because her daughter was pregnant and "collies aren't good around kids". The groomer came over and told me, knowing my love for collies, and I adopted him the next day. Other than his habit of playing in his water dish and thus making himself muddy all the time, he was an absolute sweetheart. As he got older and developed age related hip dysplasia, I took him to water therapy and had special vet treatments and playdates. After he crossed the bridge at 13 years young, my sister-in-laws aunt, who happens to breed and show collies, knew about everything I had done for Aragorn, and knew I was struggling with my Multiple Sclerosis becoming worse, decided to give me one of her pups. That was 6 years ago, and Sorcha, the current Sable ball of fluff in my life, is a constant source of joy.
@Samson 92 I know! And that's part of the reason I adopted him, I couldn't see him going to another family that didn't know anything about collies. Unfortunately I had to euthanize Sorcha last week. She had several grand mal seizures out of the blue, with absolutely no warning or other indications of being sick. I had been treating her for a hygroma on her right front elbow, but other than that she showed no signs of anything. At her last vet visit 2 moths ago her bloodwork came up all normal. When I took her in to the emergency clinic, the vet thought she may have had a brain tumor. He offered full workup and care, but did caution that because of the severe seizures she would have already experienced much brain damage and her prognosis was poor. He also said that even if they could get her stable and the seizures controlled her quality of life would be poor. With that information, I elected to help Sorcha cross the bridge. If she was in pain from a tumor, she never showed it, her demeanor never changed, her appetite never changed, she always seemed so happy. That's one of the hardest things with collies, they don't show their pain, they are so stoic when it comes to pain.
@@shrub5770 How very kind of you. And, yes I used my stimulus check to buy a male, rough Collie. Within 24 hrs. I was smiling and laughing at all the goofy things a puppy does and my depression left. You're a kind person, good things happen to those of good character like yourself.

December 23, 2023, 6:15 pm EST I have a purebred rough collie named Lassie, after the famous TV star. My Lassie, age 5 going on 6, is a wonderful and loving furbaby who adds joy and satisfaction to my life.
I find extreme comfort with my Collie, Different from any other dog . I love to watch my collie being walked by a small child. Totally different from other dogs
Some collies have a unique personality. My childhood and teenage companion was a flat coated collie. He was extremely protective and had the guarding instinct of a German shepherd. Every winter, no matter the wheather, he was laying all night at the stable door. Guarding the cows inside. Only my dad, me and my brother were allowed to pass. And woo to the unsuspecting stranger that would enter the house when my mother was there alone. Then he really could be dangerous. RIP Spits (1971-1988)
My parents are on their third collie. The first one they got as puppy. The other two were replaced dogs. The current one is very friendly but also protective. He loves to play! Encloses garden. He is quite restless and needs people around - to know where his “herd” is. Since my parents live in town, there are a lot of people w/wo dogs and vehicles passing on the street. He dislikes bicycles or fast-moving cars etc. (Besides other dod) He gets totally crazy when he sees bicycles. Curiously, he does not care about fireworks. He has been trained to handle those sounds. He is also a breeding dog. He has no problems with the cats. Although, he loves their food! Collies need a lot of activity, attention, and love.
I've had three collies. My last passed away a month ago and it's been hard, as always. One health concern not mentioned is MDR1 gene mutation. Most collies these days have this, many owners are not aware. It's important to know because it makes a big difference in what kinds of medications and treatments are safe. PLEASE HAVE YOUR COLLIE TESTED. BE AWARE.
It’s a good idea to not give any collie ivermectin. The breeder I bought mine from told me she tests her puppies, and they were all negative, but it’s a good idea to just not risk it at all. I’m surprised it isn’t more common knowledge.
Keep lint rollers in every room and car lol.. maverick is with me everywhere i go! I have 7 and wouldn't change it for the world. They just turned 9 and their dad 10. ❤ best friends, workout buddy, and companions ever
I really want a collie but I work a full time job. I got my first collie when I was 12 and I trained him to go off leash in a field and on our lawn in just 3 weeks at the age of 15 weeks. I work a full time job and I am going to give him 1 hour of field exercise in the morning and 1-2 hours when I come home. I will also be paying a neighbourhood kid to walk my dog around the block and play with him in my backyard for a bit. Do you think my dog will be ok.
Most of the Lassie movies were from the 1940s before the TV series. Hip dysplasia is more of an abnormal formation of the hip socket than a disease. I've had six and a half Rough Collies. Sadly, old age has taken them all from me.
I had two ,a tri and a sable. The Tri had a wicked sense of humour, And Both loved to play hide and seek in the tall grasses. They would run off in different directions and then jump up and bark to get my attention, then run away. I would play along for a while. Then I would hide in the grass. They would get worried and the hunt to find me. They were great fun. I miss them terribly
I had a rough coated border collie mix that I got as a rescue (her previous owners could not care for her and her pups because they had more dogs on their property than they could provide for - basically she was a "country"/ outdoor dog from West Virginia, if that gives you any idea of how she was treated). She was the sweetest thing ever, even though she never quite got the concept of obedience training (no, you do not run out in front of a car while in pursuit of a squirrel when I take you out to pee - yep, we doubled down on recall training after that!) and was a bottomless pit when it came to eating, and a snoring/farting bed hog, but I loved her to pieces and was devastated when I had to put her down 2 years ago at the age of 13 due to spleen cancer.
What the lady is saying in a roundabout way is that they are the most beautiful kindest living Creatures on the planet. I have the honour and privilege of having 2 myself, my two daughters have one each as well.
Makes a lot of sense as to why my collie barks at bikes and bigger vehicles, small animals and people 😅 I thought it was because she grew up in the country
I have a smooth collie she does get protective with me when strangers walk behind me or in front of me at time certain people throw off bad vibes with my collie she dose have a productive bark to her I love her to the moon and back she's a well trained girl and we'll trained at 8 weeks she sits on the sidewalk til it's time to cross and doesn't bark at other dogs I'm so blessed she so good and well behaved
I've had 5 rough collies. They can be snappy, skittly and nervous. One dog I had was well bred with no known health problems. He had the eye condition, with recessive gene in one eye. He mananaged ok. Two I had would viciously fight sometimes. I don't know why they would have the odd fight. They are a nice dog. They need lots grooming. The fur behind their ears is very soft and silky, it knots very easily. I often had to cut the knobs out. Dropping their coats is a long proccess. A good groom will help. They also often have a 'potty botty'
We breed the older lines of farm bred collies known a Scotch (Scottish) collies. Our collies are smaller (40lbs to 60lbs) , more agile, apt to hunting small game, and great herding animals.
@@marjoriejohnson6535, you should be able to find us on Facebook at Texas_Scotch_Collies. Go to www.scotchcollie.org for more information about the history and future of these collies.

No where near as bad as german shepherds and Huskies! Have/had all 3 breeds and collies shed maybe half as much. Although you have to keep the collies trimmed and brushed more or they get tangled fur. Mine are all lap dogs, I love their norrow heads...although when I play with my shepherds I'm like holy crap y'all have big heads after seeing the collies lol.
breeding "just for fun" and "to see what happens" is not the best idea. there are enough pups that are homeless due to irresponsible breeding
My mom tells me that when I was a toddler and ran around in our large backyard that our rough collies would herd me away from the borders of our property. Princess and Jewel were wonderful dogs. So sweet and very loyal to our family. They were never fenced in and always stayed on our property.
Our collie also knew the EXACT borderlines of our prpoerty.

Hey Ratcliffe, thank you for the post. I wanted to ask you, do you think rough collies are a good choice for a first time dog owner?
You have a 50 year old collie? What food do you use...
@@exrental8696 Yes, if somebody is home. They can be sensitive to being told off. If you are cross with them, they will never forget it. No need to shout. be kind. Clean, kind and clever, thats what they are. Look at www.collielife for one. Mostly show people, but some do care about temperament. Tell them that is the most important thing to you.
@@ElwoodPDowd-nz2si No, :-) we are several generations along. We did some shows, had some puppies. Now we just enjoy the 3 boys who are 4, 3 and 1 years old.
We currently have 2 and you are spot on with your statement and I find the Doc. on collies to be 98% correct.

You described my rough collie exactly! We love him very much!

The Perfect breed !
@@lunaazule1899 The royalty of dogs
They are beautiful dogs.
There's no better breed....absolutely the best dog I've ever owned. Everything said above is accurate. Sweet and gentle. Not overly affectionate, which can be a good trait. They are sensitive and do not respond well to harsh voices or commands. They do not forget. Educate yourself before bringing one home...

I have had sheltie s and I have had few other breeds s I got my first smooth collie in 2019 I love her to the moon and back
Have had both Shelties are great but a bit more yappy, but the crap is smaller to pick up

Patrick McCormick.....I heard Dynavite food supplement is good for Allergies and Hot Spots.
Thanks to your video, It convinced me to get a rough collie I named him Harvey he barks at wheels, balls and da vaccume. I’m surprised more ppl don’t have them!
@Samson 92 yes he is doing great!! His birthday is 9 days he’s just growing up too fast.
Greatest dog collies are so beautiful and loving love them so much
Hubby and I have had five collies throughout the course of our 45 years of marriage.
I've always had a soft spot for collies. Especially in the TV show Lassie. :)
I’m on my fourth. All from Marko’s Collies in Tacoma WA. Love them to death. Love brushing them; with the right technique it is a good bonding experience as well as shedding control.
I got one coming in February! So excited!
You got it right, all 10 are good facts
I'm looking at getting a collie, so this video was very informative! Thank you!
I'm the same. I had mine for 14 yrs. and after having to put her down 3 days ago, I need another . No other breed is as quiet.

Different from any other dog .
I love to watch my collie being walked by a small child. Totally different from other dogs
I've always loved collies since I was little
I have 2 collie puppies and I can honestly say I'm in love
Some collies have a unique personality.
My childhood and teenage companion was a flat coated collie.
He was extremely protective and had the guarding instinct of a German shepherd.
Every winter, no matter the wheather, he was laying all night at the stable door.
Guarding the cows inside.
Only my dad, me and my brother were allowed to pass.
And woo to the unsuspecting stranger that would enter the house when my mother was there alone.
Then he really could be dangerous.
RIP Spits (1971-1988)
Rough Collie looks noble and cool
The best of the best !
i have a retriever and have been looking to get a rough collie❤️ i’m loving everything about them
If you got the time to spend with them you won't be disappointed with them. Great with people and they get along with other pets.
JUST GOT A LITTLE ROUGH COLLIE PUP! HES THE CUTEST! 💞😘

Thanks! How cool! Do they get along well with your 2 huskies?
Most of the Lassie movies were from the 1940s before the TV series. Hip dysplasia is more of an abnormal formation of the hip socket than a disease.
I've had six and a half Rough Collies. Sadly, old age has taken them all from me.
Yeah I wish one day I wanna get me a rough collie just like lassie
collies remind me of lassie
Love my seven rough collie
Thank you for letting me know that my devastation at having to put her down 3 days ago, is normal when one has had a Collie.
Wow. I have 3 RC's and had no idea there is a difference between the US and UK breed - very useful facts here - thank you so much for posting this😀.
What the lady is saying in a roundabout way is that they are the most beautiful kindest living Creatures on the planet. I have the honour and privilege of having 2 myself, my two daughters have one each as well.
Makes a lot of sense as to why my collie barks at bikes and bigger vehicles, small animals and people 😅
I thought it was because she grew up in the country
I have a smooth collie she does get protective with me when strangers walk behind me or in front of me at time certain people throw off bad vibes with my collie she dose have a productive bark to her I love her to the moon and back she's a well trained girl and we'll trained at 8 weeks she sits on the sidewalk til it's time to cross and doesn't bark at other dogs I'm so blessed she so good and well behaved

We have had two, wonderful loyal dogs family friendly and kiddie great, one dog and bitch will always cherish their memories.
Additional info. Shelties are fantastic!
Would love to see your collies. When I was last looking for a sheltie I was looking for a pre 1960 . When shelties were shelties.
