I'm from Romania, but live in the US (since '82). You don't know how happy I am to hear your comments! The Hungarians whom we've met here (Houston) are so hateful, but then they are from Transylvania (those Hungarians live with the hatred towards the Romanians, and they bring that hatred everywhere they immigrate).

My grandfather was Hungarian, and he couldn't stand my mom because she is Not Hungarian...hence he couldn't stand my sister and me (that's just my fam history). The Hungarians (in Transylvania) considered themselves better than the native population and couldn't stand being in the wrong country after WWI when the population (Hungarian) was forced to assimilate and some never spoke Romanian...

I've been there, born and raised till 14 in a village of no more than 1000 people. Life is hard, cannot deny it, because you don't have many servicies and you have to be auto sufficient, but it gives you something more than the city. It gives you the love for the nature, when year after year u eat apples from the same tree your grandfather planted years ago. The same feeling covers you when you and your friends gather together with just a knife and some ropes, make your own bows, and go to catch wild rabbits, that you will eat on the spot. Now I'm 21, i've been in Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, but nowhere is like at home. Yes, in the cities i learned a shit load of things, from biochemistry and physics to psychology and philosophy but, no matter how much i learn, and how much i change over time, i just can't take that life style out of my hearth. It's just a matter of what we've learned to value the most, in the city, is money, in the rural is life.

The reason we are miserable is exactly as you say, we have "everything" yet have nothing or rather, no one. Family and friends don't connect like they used to, we don't live close to them as we used to. I miss my cousins, my aunts, my uncles and grandparents. Several are dead but the ones who are alive may as well be. I have a big family on both sides and we were all close until now. Work, internet has changed us is and not for the better. My happiest memories are of my young years running with my cousins.

Both sets of my Great Grandparents came from small fishing villages in Croatia...this is what I imagine their life was like before their lives were torn up from wars. They came to the US, and now I feel like I would be so blessed to live this sweet simple life. I’m self employed, long hours, only vacation in 12 years was 6 years ago...I’m thankful, but know this life would be ok for me an my husband!

I'm Romanian and I went on vacation to my grandparents and relatives in Dobrogea, which has the Danube Delta where the film was filmed, in Oltenia and Transylvania. They may seem poor but they have food, fruit, bread and cakes that you can't buy in the city, no matter how much money you have. Believe me, the air, the quiet of the nights, the lack of worries, and the sky that looks different both day and night, do more than anyone who hasn't experienced this can imagine. I really thought that if a housewife from the Danube Delta sold traditional pies in the city, in 2 years she would have money to build a house from scratch. If you have the opportunity to have a vacation for a few days in a delta, it exceeds all expectations. With respect!

I wish I could live there! I was born and raised in a farm in Central America. Very similar lifestyle, agriculture, milking cows at 6 am, fishing, etc., etc. I miss that way of life.

A very nice insight into the lives of these villagers indeed. Many people tend to romanticize this kind of lifestyle looking from the outside in, but it is tough. If you don't work, then you don't eat. These are a hearty and hard working people indeed. I can only begin to imagine just how difficult it must have been for their ancestors to survive with the Nazi German and Communist Soviet hordes marauding and marching all over their lands, when one day you are Ukrainian and the next you are Romanian. I am happy that at least they have found some measure of peace in their lives. Cheers to one and all.
JockBaloney / in WW2 Romania had a fascist regime, thanks to the Soviet Union Romania implemented socialism which built up the majority of what you see in Romania today. By 1958 the Soviet troops exited Romania and it was the opposite of what you said. One day the Romanians living in Southern Bassarabia and Northern Bukovina suddenly were incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR. Romanias population under socialism never decreased unlike nowadays where Romanians are moving west and the population is decreasing year after year. You clearly don't know what you're talking about. The only bad thin the Soviets did to Romania was occupy two parts and divide the Moldovans from the collective of Romanians from Transylvania and Wallachia. The Romania was once a proud country, self sufficient with a plan for a better future. Today the country has stagnated and its people leave. Quit trying to blame everything on others, capitalism has been restored in Romania for nearly 30 years and the country is doing bad. Moldova is even worse

How about mentioning the countless Romanians that died as political prisoners in some of the worst prisons in Europe? Not to mention that they robbed the country for 20 years of its assets, taking entire factories with them into Russia, forcing us to make mixed enterprise companies with Soviet and Romanian capital as a mean to rob 50% of our agricultural and industrial production in the 1950s. The less we speak about the intentionally provoked famine in Bessarabia between 1944 and 1946 the better. Or if we go way back in the past, up until this day they did not give up the over 90 tones of gold part of our treasury which we deposited with them in 1916. A proud country? What was so proud about being occupied and milked dry by the Soviets? What was so proud about being a country in debt, with a barely functional economy and with a quasi-famine in the 1980s? You think that people did not want to leave during the communist regime? Plenty of them left, just that now borders are open, back then leaving the country meant that you need to pass them illegally and it was risky, as you could get killed by border guards patrolling near the border. Cut the crap please! The main reason why Romania is suffering today is because the Soviets got their filthy hands on this country in 1944. Everything that we experience today is a result of that wretched day. Today, it is the sons of the former soviet agents that rule Romania, and they are getting ready to pass the torch to a new generation. The Hungarians whom we've met here (Houston) are so hateful, but then they are from Transylvania (those Hungarians live with the hatred towards the Romanians, and they bring that hatred everywhere they immigrate).

My grandfather was Hungarian, and he couldn't stand my mom because she is Not Hungarian...hence he couldn't stand my sister and me (that's just my fam history). The Hungarians (in Transylvania) considered themselves better than the native population and couldn't stand being in the wrong country after WWI when the population (Hungarian) was forced to assimilate and some never spoke Romanian...

I've been there, born and raised till 14 in a village of no more than 1000 people. Life is hard, cannot deny it, because you don't have many servicies and you have to be auto sufficient, but it gives you something more than the city. It gives you the love for the nature, when year after year u eat apples from the same tree your grandfather planted years ago. The same feeling covers you when you and your friends gather together with just a knife and some ropes, make your own bows, and go to catch wild rabbits, that you will eat on the spot.
Now I'm 21, i've been in Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Austria, but nowhere is like at home. Yes, in the cities i learned a shit load of things, from biochemistry and physics to psychology and philosophy but, no matter how much i learn, and how much i change over time, i just can't take that life style out of my hearth. It's just a matter of what we've learned to value the most, in the city, is money, in the rural is life.

The reason we are miserable is exactly as you say, we have "everything" yet have nothing or rather, no one. Family and friends don't connect like they used to, we don't live close to them as we used to. I miss my cousins, my aunts, my uncles and grandparents. Several are dead but the ones who are alive may as well be. I have a big family on both sides and we were all close until now. Work, internet has changed us is and not for the better. My happiest memories are of my young years running with my cousins.

I live in Romania, about 150-200 km from the delta but i never saw it ... I plan next year to spend all my free days in the delta and live simple and healthy like this !

Both sets of my Great Grandparents came from small fishing villages in Croatia...this is what I imagine their life was like before their lives were torn up from wars. They came to the US, and now I feel like I would be so blessed to live this sweet simple life. I’m self employed, long hours, only vacation in 12 years was 6 years ago...I’m thankful, but know this life would be ok for me an my husband!

I'm Romanian and I went on vacation to my grandparents and relatives in Dobrogea, which has the Danube Delta where the film was filmed, in Oltenia and Transylvania. They may seem poor but they have food, fruit, bread and cakes that you can't buy in the city, no matter how much money you have. Believe me, the air, the quiet of the nights, the lack of worries, and the sky that looks different both day and night, do more than anyone who hasn't experienced this can imagine. I really thought that if a housewife from the Danube Delta sold traditional pies in the city, in 2 years she would have money to build a house from scratch. If you have the opportunity to have a vacation for a few days in a delta, it exceeds all expectations. With respect!

I wish I could live there! I was born and raised in a farm in Central America. Very similar lifestyle, agriculture, milking cows at 6 am, fishing, etc., etc. I miss that way of life.

Would be nice to do another couple of videos to this one. One video could cover a week and a half over Easter and Christmas respectively and show how they prepare for each of those holidays and the preparation of the food for each and what the different courses of food.

A very nice insight into the lives of these villagers indeed. Many people tend to romanticize this kind of lifestyle looking from the outside in, but it is tough. If you don't work, then you don't eat. These are a hearty and hard working people indeed. I can only begin to imagine just how difficult it must have been for their ancestors to survive with the Nazi German and Communist Soviet hordes marauding and marching all over their lands, when one day you are Ukrainian and the next you are Romanian. I am happy that at least they have found some measure of peace in their lives. Cheers to one and all.
JockBaloney / in WW2 Romania had a fascist regime, thanks to the Soviet Union Romania implemented socialism which built up the majority of what you see in Romania today. By 1958 the Soviet troops exited Romania and it was the opposite of what you said. One day the Romanians living in Southern Bassarabia and Northern Bukovina suddenly were incorporated into the Ukrainian SSR. Romanias population under socialism never decreased unlike nowadays where Romanians are moving west and the population is decreasing year after year.

The only bad thin the Soviets did to Romania was occupy two parts and divide the Moldovans from the collective of Romanians from Transylvania and Wallachia. The Romania was once a proud country, self sufficient with a plan for a better future. Today the country has stagnated and its people leave. Quit trying to blame everything on others, capitalism has been restored in Romania for nearly 30 years and the country is doing bad. Moldova is even worse
The 'only' bad things? How about mentioning the hundreds of thousands of Romanians deported to Siberia to work in their gulags? How about mentioning the countless Romanians that died as political prisoners in some of the worst prisons in Europe? How about mentioning the complete annihilation of the Romanian intellectual class that pretty built the modern day state of Romania and contributed tremendously to our political, social, economical and artistic life?
Save your eulogies for the Soviets. They were far worse than the Nazis. Not to mention that they robbed the country for 20 years of its assets, taking entire factories with them into Russia, forcing us to make mixed enterprise companies with Soviet and Romanian capital as a mean to rob 50% of our agricultural and industrial production in the 1950s.
The less we speak about the intentionally provoked famine in Bessarabia between 1944 and 1946 the better. Or if we go way back in the past, up until this day they did not give up the over 90 tones of gold part of our treasury which we deposited with them in 1916.
A proud country? What was so proud about being occupied and milked dry by the Soviets? What was so proud about being a country in debt, with a barely functional economy and with a quasi-famine in the 1980s? You think that people did not want to leave during the communist regime? Plenty of them left, just that now borders are open, back then leaving the country meant that you need to pass them illegally and it was risky, as you could get killed by border guards patrolling near the border. The main reason why Romania is suffering today is because the Soviets got their filthy hands on this country in 1944. Everything that we experience today is a result of that wretched day. Today, it is the sons of the former soviet agents that rule Romania, and they are getting ready to pass the torch to a new generation. If the Soviet's were taking half the Romanian economy there would be no way the population would've consistently gone up as well as industry and infrastructure. If Romania was such a vassal to the USSR than why did Ceausescu refuse (and even publicly denounced) to support the invasion of Czechoslovakia? Most the buildings you see today in Romania were built by the socialist regime, before socialism Romania was a backwards mostly agrarian country. Also, you want to cry about the prisoners of war, well the Nazi's killed literally millions of Soviet POW's not a few thousand who died in gulags while the rest of the country was destroyed by operation Barbarossa.
