Baratheons are supposed to be related to the Targaryens to begin with. The founder of the house, Orys Baratheon, is rumored to be Aegon the conqueror's bastard brother.

    • @LE-hq6ej
      @LE-hq6ej Год назад +8

The Baratheon's are distant cousins to the Targaryens through Orys and also more recently through the female line via Alyssa Velaryon - wife to both Aenys I Targaryen and later to Rogar Baratheon. But Princess Rhenys' mother was actually a Baratheon, so it's even closer for her (Alyssa was _both_ her maternal grandmother and her paternal great-grandmother. Gotta love the Targaryens). The Baratheon knight who Rhenys called cousin was her maternal 1st cousin (In the book Boremund was actually her Uncle - I think they changed it to make the ages of the actors make a bit more sense - Rhaenys is theoretically about 30-35 at this point, but Eve Best looks older).

for some extra context on the opening scene. King Jaehaerys I was the grandson of Aegon the Conqueror and he had 13 children with his sister-wife, Alysanne. Of those 13, only 9 made it to adulthood and Jaehaerys outlived 7 of those 9. Here's a rundown of the kids.
Aegon - born premature and died
Daenerys - died of a fever as a toddler
Aemon - married his half-aunt, Lady Jocelyn Baratheon, and had Rhaenys
Baelon - married his sister, Alyssa, and had Viserys, Daemon and Aegon
Alyssa - married her brother, Baelon, and died in childbirth with her third son, Aegon, who died soon after
Maegelle - became a Septa and then died of greyscale
Vaegon - became an Archmaester and outlived his dad
Daella - married Lord Rodrik Arryn of the Eyrie and died giving birth to Aemma Arryn (Rhaenyra's mother)
Saera - ran off to Essos and became a prostitute, outlived her dad
Viserra - was betrothed to an old man and tried to seduce her brother, Baelon, to get out of it and ended up dying in a drunken horse riding accident
Gaemon - died in the cradle
Valerion - died in the cradle
Gael - drowned herself after her bastard son was stillborn
Jaehaerys was a great king but a really crappy dad

Well, at least Jaehaerys I was an outstanding King. Not everyone is cut out for parenthood. He was a good husband and (for that time/place) gave his wife a lot of latitude; they had a good royal partnership for years until they quarreled over his treatment of one of their daughters (forget which one).

Daemon wasn't just guessing; he was known as the "Prince of Flea Bottom" for a reason, and his City Watch consisted of people who had quite a bit of knowledge of what went on there. Maybe some were wrong, but I don't get the impression that he'd really do that there, it wasn't his intention. Also of note is that it was he who first gave them gold cloaks, a tradition they've retained almost 200 years later, giving them the eponymous nickname of "Gold Cloaks".

    • @LuxLoser

I mean, Daemon is noted that, alongside being Prince of Flea Bottom, that he had an immense enjoyment of dismemberment. That was fun for him, and any mistakes made would just send the real culprits running scared, so I doubt he fine combed the investigations.

The Baratheons have at least 3 links to the Targaryens - the founder of the house, Orys (rumoured Targ bastard), Rhaenys' mother Jocelyn Baratheon, and Robert's grandmother (the reason his was the claim put forward by the Baratheon/Stark/Arryn/Tully and eventual Lannister alliance which deposed the Mad King).

I know that faced with such a situation, the final decision would have been my wife's if at all possible (the exception being if she were in an unconscious state and couldn't be roused enough to make that determination). That being said I believe it was a deliberate choice for the show not to tell her to a.) highlight that even as much as he loved his wife, it's still a very patriarchal society, b.) foreshadow the coming struggle for Rhaenyra in the face of that patriarchy and c.) make commentary on the very real consequences in our modern society from multiple regressive legislative efforts succeeding in further reducing or denying women's bodily autonomy.

Daemon Targaryen is certainly one of the best characters in the entire universe of Got. He is the favorite Targaryen of the author of the book G. G. Martin, and Matt Smith performed him perfectly. (For centuries, House Targaryen has produced both great men and monsters. Prince Daemon was both. In his day, there was no man in all of Westeros who was so admired, so loved, and so reviled. He was made of light and darkness in equal parts. For some he was a hero, for others he was the blackest of villains") From the book

If you are not up on the history and Lore of the GoT books the one thing you learn is that many of these houses are related. They never mention it in the show GoT is that House Baratheon and House Targaryen are closely related. The books tend to go into why there is so much animosity between the houses. Mostly it is family feuds of direct bloodlines or married in family. The real life mirror are the royal families of Europe and how closely related they are.

First of all , Loved your reaction.
17:18 You've misread Daemon here. They show us how Daemon feels about his brother and niece blatantly in the funeral scene. Re-watch it of possible. If he didn't care he'd be like *YAWN , whatever* but it's very much opposite to that. Also when he's listening to the council in stealth , his smile says "Yeah, my brother knows me" when Viserys says Daemon doesn't want the throne.
He wants to be by Viserys' side but Otto will not allow it at any cost, you'll see why later.
Also you yourself saw that Daemon was not into it in the brothel, he was sitting by himself all moody. There's a reason why they show OTTO repeating Daemon's toast , probably in a way he likes, to split the brothers up.
Daemon's viscious but also defends people he cares about. He acts douchy sometimes but loves his family.

Daemon did not decide, nor did he want the job.
Otto mentioned that Daemon had been assigned other duties a few times, and had performed them to the extreme.
Daemon does not like, or trust Otto, as you have seen in this episode. Daemon wants to be the King's Hand, not the king.
Daemon was sent to repair and train the City Watch, per Otto's advisement to the king, as they were underperforming in their duties to secure the city.
It had the added bonus to Otto of removing Daemon from the king's ear.
Daemon went and did as Daemon does.
Trained them up, gave them a new name and cloak, and went on a spree of criminal punishing that would be remembered for a long time.
He did have the safety of the tournament attendees, lords and ladies from all over the realm, to worry about.
Daemon is direct and brutal, often impulsive, but never, ever, doubt his love for his family.

Nobility in medieval settings is partly an accurate description of relations - probably not first cousins but with marriage alliances as a thing, if you go back far enough you've probably got a shared ancestor. However it's also more or less a formality, especially for nobility within the same realm, to treat each other as distant family presided over by the monarch, who is in a ceremonial sense father to the whole realm.

Another great reaction. Uncle Daemob and his niece Princess Rhaenyra, who’d ever think of such? Oh yea it’s Westeros. You have pronounced Rhaenyra’s name perfectly the first time each time you’ve said it. (Ray-Near-Uh)

(Some history and lore about Dorne). Did you know Dorne is the only realm out of the seven that is ruled by the firstborn Martell child regardless of gender since Nymeria (since thousands of years ago)? Also, they Dornish were never conquered by the Targaryens? In fact, by this time they still remain independent, "Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken", and they will for some decades more. Some Targaryen conquered Dorne for a few months (and he had a happy ending) but they officially became part of the Seven Kingdoms when they wanted and on their terms. They kept their royal title and, for instance, tax raising autonomy.

Character names in this show are the equivalent of house names in the original GOT when it comes to what people need to get used to. It doesn‘t help that the Targaryan‘s seem to have a very limited name pool and they all sound similar and some get used often.
