    Lars asks:
My left collarbone is popping out whenever I lift my arm over the head. It pops back in when I take my arm down. I had no accident or injury, and I have no pain so far. I saw two doctors, and they both have never seen this before. They only said “rest for a couple of weeks and it will heal”. After 3 months, I still have this problem. Should I be worried? I heard that the cartilage can wear down and I could have problems long term. I really want to go back to the gym, but currently I am too worried about damaging my sternoclavicular joint even more.
    Thank you for your help.
Instability of the sternoclavicular joint can often result from a traumatic injury which leads to a dislocation of the clavicle in front of the sternum - an anterior sternoclavicular dislocation. Most of the time, the clavicle stays dislocated in front of the sternum, leading to a mild prominence on that side compared to the other, but it rarely causes any persistent problems. Occasionally people complain about the appearance and the bump, but they overcome the discomfort and weakness fairly quickly.
Occasionally a patient notices that the end of the clavicle pops back and forth, in and out of place, after a traumatic injury. In some cases where people have generalized ligamentous laxity, they might experience that popping in and out without an injury.
Usually, this instability is not a serious problem if it doesn’t limit their activities. In this video, I discuss how patients can improve the strength and function of their arm to try to deal with sternoclavicular instability. I also discuss the possible surgical options and explain the balance between risks and benefits when deciding if surgery is the best course of action.
Please remember, while I appreciate your questions, I cannot and will not offer specific medical advice by email, online, on my show, or in the comments at the end of these posts. My responses are meant to provide general medical information and education. Please consult your physician or health care provider for your specific medical concerns.

Dr. David Geier Hi Dr. Geier, I have my left sternoclavicular joint that is inflamed. My daughter noticed 3 months ago so I’m not sure how long it’s been there. I had an x Ray, blood work for autoimmune and inflammation and everything came up negative. I’m wondering if you’ve ever seen this and what could be possible causes as I don’t remember injuring it. I do play volleyball but do not know of any injury to it. Thank you.

Dear dr David Geier, I’m a mma competitor and after dislocating my shoulder I’ve experienced the same as many others. My collar bone keeps popping out when moving my arms above my shoulders. It mostly doesn’t cause any discomfort but after an intensive training session I do feel pain for a few days. Would it be worthwhile to get it checked out?

    Thanks Dr Geier,
I'm an RN , 64 yrs old and I've played guitar since I was 11 . I swim for exercise. I also work on the computer daily so that tends to play havoc with the arthritis I already have in my back and neck. I've been having some bilateral bicep discomfort that just started this summer while swimming. I just figured I was out of shape from not swimming as much during the winter so I kept swimming. Midway thru the summer my collar bone started popping when I was swimming and now when I raise my arm or rotate it and lately when I move my arm at all. Your video helped me identify this as probable sterno-clavicular instablility. I was relieved to know this probably not a big deal as it is not hurting at this time, it's just really annoying. I don't know if my activities are going to make it worse, if I need to rest it for a while, keep doing what I've been doing or if I need to make an appt. with an Ortho doc .
    Thanks ! Kat

Thank you for inviting people to share these experiences. I would like to share mine and hope you will take the time to read it. Back in 2008 I fell off a ladder while at work from about 6' off the ground. Just to the left of the ladder on ground level was a square opening in the concrete measuring about 5' X 5' and went about 15' down. This was a pump pit that held all the pumps and motors for the building I was working on. Anyway, after falling off the ladder I fell through this opening, which only had a T grid and plastic fencing covering it at the time. I tore through this fencing and at the last minute I caught myself with outstretched arms. My feet were dangling at this point and I was only held up by my hands and distal forearms. I managed to pull myself up but knew immediately I had done some serious damage because of the intense pain I was in. Long story short (too late I guess): 5 surgeries on the right shoulder and a 3rd one coming on the left. I've had multiple SLAP tears, 2 acromioplasties, biceps tenodesis, decrompressions for bone spurs impinging on my rotator cuff. I am experiencing much more relief despite all these surgeries but there is one thing that still concerns me. My SC joint is very unstable. My last PT noticed this along with a slightly displaced scapula which she thinks was caused by my clavicle being violently pulled and my rhomboid being hyper-extended from the fall. This has also caused my right shoulder to roll forward significantly more than my left. I'm currently doing a home workout program to develop more strength in my upper back muscles to help stabilize my scapula. Now getting back to the SC joint (sorry). I've been noticing that my right clavicle shifts anteriorily when i adduct my arm across my body. Sometimes it will even get stuck and I have trouble lifting things out in front of me until it pops back in place. I mentioned all this to all 3 surgeons who have worked on me but they say there is nothing that can be done about it. My PT says once I have gained enough strength and stability for my shoulder blade that it could resolve this SC joint issue. My question then is is this possible? Or is there a risk of the cartilage holding the joint together completely tearing eventually? Your thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Left clavicle dislocation since 2001 from a fall playing volleyball. Occasionally get tightness in the shoulder and discomfort in front of clavicle and sciatica. Stretching exercises on RUclips and yoga makes it better. Occasionally I’ll go to the chiropractor for an adjustment which helps. Mentally keeping my left shoulder relaxed and keeping my posture up helps too. Still, it’s annoyingly uncomfortable at times but livable. Glad to know I’m not alone in this.

Because I row, I asked my coach what it was and he doesn’t know what it is, he’s kinda freaked out about it. My parents don’t know what it is, I didn’t know what it is. I have bilateral chronic anterior sternoclavicular joint dislocation not caused by trauma. I tried many doctors and ended up at the mayo clinic. In August I had reconstructive surgery on the left sternoclavicular joint and so far I think it was the best decision of my life and plan to have it on the right sternoclavicular joint as soon as possible. My joints dislocate whenever I raise my arms or move my shoulders backwards. It was very painful and I missed being able to do things like washing my hair without my fingers going numb. They say that there is a chance this dislocation will resolve itself over time but I was diagnosed a year ago at 14 and I couldn’t handle dealing with this until my late 20s.... I think that surgery is the best choice for a lot of people, especially if you’re young and it’s starting to greatly affect your life.

So my experience with this has been pretty weird. One day I was drying myself off with a towel and it just popped out of place but with an uncomfortable cracking or crumbling noise and not a popping one. Immediately went to two doctors who looked at me like I was crazy stating that there is absolutely nothing wrong. A third decided to give me highly potent muscle relaxant which I decided not to take. So I did some testing myself. When I actively try to keep the joint in place while moving my arm the pain is quite more noticeable than leaving it to it’s done devices. This pain shifting to the back of my shoulder / lower shoulder blade while externally rotating my shoulder and lifting it up to the side. This has been around 2 years ago and I only have very mild pain which increases slightly when holding or pushing heavy weights. Pulling has never seemed to be a problem. Due to another injury I’m incapable of training for a while but when I do begin again I will try to stretch and activate my muscles as much as possible outside of the gym and prier to training. I believe that having a big range of motion in the chest, particularly the pecs minor and in the shoulder could have a positive effect on the problem, maybe not solve it but at least could ease the stress on the joint and reduce popping and the long term ramifications of training with this problem.

My 13yr old daughter is a competitive swimmer. Her primary strokes are fly and free. She’s hypermobile (from me!) and with an increased pool training programme has started to get shoulder pain. With my physio hat on (rather than my mum hat) I had a closer look and she has bilat anterior subluxation of her scj (left worse than right)
I’ve got her doing posterior ghj capsular stretches and scapular stabilising exs (PNF and rotator cuff, particularly subscapularis) with great effect. She’s learnt to control the subluxing by being more conscious of her scapular stability when swimming - a few minutes spent in warm up with her Theraband is enough to “switch” these muscles on and she’s back to being pain free with minimal clunking.

    • @Zephir62

I didn't play sports, I'd not hurt myself, it's not even my dominant arm ... but there it was! I was told the same, it's nothing to worry about. Some 18-ish years later, it still does it. This sounds like what has happened to me. About a month ago, I did not have a tramic injury, but apparently reached the wrong way. It way a forceful and quick action but there was immediate pain. X-rays showed nothing dislocated or broken when I went to the urgent care. But initially I couldn't move my arm without pain. After a few days in a sling, I had full motion and no pain. But since then when I have moved certain ways reaching, it feels like it "pops" out. It hurts in the moment but I move my arm around somemm more and it "pops" back in and no more pain. This has happened about 4 times now. It does not seem to be a strength issue as I tentatively tried my kettle bell routine without problems. I was glad to find your article and video as I was wondering if this were something I needed to return to the doctor about but it seems extreme measures are unnecessary. Will thus get any better....stop the popping out..over time and with care?

Three months later I noticed a lump on my collar bone and asked my doctor ( after doing some basic research on the internet and eliminating all but an Anterior dislocation at the SC joint) at the VA and was set up with a PT appointment however I saw several more videos on re-positioning the SC joint by Robert Libbey and have had good luck moving the clavicle back into a semi stable place (after more than six months out of place) I have been working as a stagehand with little restriction or pain. I am looking forward to the PT therapy appointment where hopefully I can learn some exerciser to stabilize the SC joint. p.s. working the shoulder side of the clavicle seems to be critical to successful placement

    Dr David Geier
I was in a terrible car accident in April (it's now October). My clavicle was broken and dislocated at the sc joint. It never healed, and the joint was full of bone fragments. I was doing PT, and it seemed to be getting better, then it would pop (like someone was punching me). This would render my shoulder and arm in pain for days, and leave bruises on my chest. The last time it "popped", it never went back in. My ortho said I had permanent dislocation, as he manipulated it in, and it would just pop back out.
A few weeks ago, I had an open reduction. He removed around 2cm of the bone, and smoothed the joint and edges so they wouldn't rub or poke me. No stabilization was introduced. The ortho said it should scar over and essentially function as normal. However, it is now floating, and will forever have a strange feeling. This I can live with I suppose.
I am 3 weeks post surgery, and ortho has said I can go with out a sling at home, no lifting pushing or pulling. And I am NOT to raise my arm above my head. I am having terrible pains through my shoulder blade, shoulder, and down to my elbow. These ease a bit with rest. Does this seem normal? My Dr says it'll take 8 weeks to heal, and I should just keep icing it and using ibuprofen.
Apparently this is a very rare injury, and I was the first surgery of my type at the hospital! I am to do pendulum swings only. And have an order for PT, to do these exercises. What are your thoughts?
I'd be happy to email photos of my xrays, if you'd like to see my Frankenstein clavicle 😂 I have already made xray techs say "oh my gosh... " Its truly a miraculous injury!

My 15 year old daughter has an anterior sublaxing SC joint or what you referred to as joint instability. She is a very active teenager, playing volleyball, basketball, softball, etc and it has started to bother her some causing some discomfort. The athletic trainer and her doctor has recommended a ultrasound guided cortisone shot to help with the pain/discomfort she's been having. Have you had any success with cortisone shots for this particular type of issue? In your opinion, do you think physical therapy, or possibly prolotherapy would work better to help correct the problem?

I fractured my left clavicle nearly four months ago (non-displaced/no surgery needed), and recently began to notice clicking in it roughly two weeks ago or so. Began doing pushups for the first time since the accident at the very beginning of month 3 post-fracture, and now notice clicking even when I'm not working out. Simply sitting at my desk, walking around, or slightly moving around in bed triggers clicking. I don't feel any pain, but the clicking has me consumed with concern for the long term since I've never experienced anything like this before.

Mine pops out when i'm doing certain movements while laying down on the right side, it doesn't hurt at the SC joint but at the AC joint for some reason (it doesn't seem completely stable there either but it doesn't really "pop out").
the problem is that whether it's related to that or not, my right shoulder always feel like it's "weak", like i cannot do fast movements, and when i did exercises for the rotator cuffs i had sharp pain and i had to stop abruptly, it used to be for the push ups as well but always the right shoulder (i would push after a certain number of reps, sharp pain and i would crumble on the right side without possibility to "fight the pain" because the body would react by itself).
I'm not going to lie, this shoulder really bothers me but no doctor ever says anything.
I have good mobility, but it's always annoying me...

I recently separated my shoulder at work (non-traumatic, no fall) and when it happened I felt a pop in my sc joint followed by burning and extreme pain. I was in a immobilizer for 2 weeks. I'm now six weeks out and it pops in and out multiple times a day. When it does go it keeps me from moving my arm properly and I have to throw my shoulder forward to get it back in.
There is a audible clunk and it hurts! I've been working with a physio since it happened but I have very hypermobile joints. One practitioner said it was likely ehlers-danlos syndrome. Because of the hypermobility is this just something I'll have to put up with?
It wouldn't bother me except for the fairly moderate pain of throwing it back in. When it goes into place sometimes it bring me to my knees. It doesnt hurt while out or after though.
I've have three joint reconstructions and I really really don't want another 😬

My collarbone pops in and out. To be honest I barely thought about it. I thought it's normal for that bone to move and since I'm a little skinny it's more visible. I don't remember having a shoulder injury. I played football back in school. I had a knee injury. I went to the gym for years and it didn't cause any pain or discomfort. Lately, I have been curious to see the name of that bone and that's how I realised it is not normal for it to move. My acromion pops out at the top as well. Although my shoulders pop when I do very specific movements.

Dr. David, you say it is not a problem if no pain are related, but when you work out with sternoclavicular dislocation, doesn't it mean unbalance and can eventually leads to unbalance muscle building? This is my logical theory. Can you confirm or tell me why it is not a problem if you work out unbalanced?

On my left side it has raised my shoulder by about half an inch compared to my non-affected shoulder. I kinda want the surgery because it looks weird, but he says I could be at a higher risk of re-injuring myself if I do the procedure. I also feel pressure on my shoulder when I do lat pull-downs. I think it is in bad enough condition to be left in this position, but apparently the doctor thinks he knows best.

I immediately stopped, lowered the weight and waited a good 10 minutes before finishing. A day later (at this point in time) my arm gets that feeling if i stretch or move it in certain ways. I don't know what happened, my dad thinks it's a pulled muscle, I don't think it is. I feel more of the pain in my bicep, almost as if it is separating from the bone. Also, my shoulders have always been able to pop as have my clavicles, I simply thought I was double jointed. Please Help.

I haven't really gained notice of it since this week, however it hasn't interfered with my working out. I still plan to get it checked out soon rather than later, but this video eased my mind. I developed a popping out of my collar none around Christmas of 2019, with no apparent reason or cause, such as a fall or accident, although I DID hit a street sign with my vehicle in early October, but don't recall any aches or pains afterwards. But in observing my came length I use because of my bad right knee, a friend of mine made a comment about it being too short, which instantly triggered a thought in my head that perhaps THAT caused my collarbone to start popping outwards, as the stress that leaning on my came DOES add a bit of discomfort to my collarbone and my theory being that, if nothing else, this improper came length (too short) could possibly cause my popped collarbone to constantly be agitated, thereby never being in a position to heal properly? I am 60 years old, but have a lifetime of exercising, including weight lifting, bodybuilding, karate and judo training , the latter 2 forms of exercising done earlier in life in teens and 20's...so I've pretty much been in touch with my body's muscular structure, aches, pains etc my whole life. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated! :-)

I am currently being treated for SC joint popping. I had an injection today to see if it would help relieve pain symptoms and I have already been through 2 PT treatments. The PT just irritates the area and as the popping became more regular I have began avoiding activity that I associate with the popping. I can't avoid the ADL's and honestly at 37 I want it fixed so I can continue activity such as push ups, yoga, certain yard work, cleaning that is above the chest, toting bags on that shoulder, and so forth. You would not believe the amount of popping that happens with simple activity. This clavicle popping only gets worse over time and becomes painful, not just annoying. It irritates the muscles near the new and between the shoulder blades. It aids in tension headaches and so forth. It took a long time to get the doctors to look into my problem. Once they finally gave it the effort to diagnosis it I was in tears that they finally gave me a diagnosis because that meant they could attempt proper treatment. My surgeon said my treatment will end with surgery even though I am having this injection. The guided injection is for me to confirm that the area this surgeon plans on operation on is the area affected and area of focus. We will see, but yes it is a scary concept of all the important things protected behind those bones. In the end I am at a place where I feel pain relief and restored function is appropriate next step even though I know the risks associated behind when on that OR table. I am glad that the likely hood of something going wrong that could lead to death is slim, because having to live with this c onstant irritation is depressing and makes you feel like not wanting to do all the things that you used to do without fear of angering that joint.

I have had this issue on both my right and left SC joint for 6 mos. with no sign of it getting better. I was told by my Ortho that it is subluxating and unless it impairs my movement tremendously or hurts tremendously leave it alone. He also told me the only doctors that will operate on it to repair the instability are "Trauma" surgeons or Otho's that specialize in it.
I still workout but I avoid shoulder abduction at 45 degrees. That is the motion that makes it pop out of place. It also pops out during everyday movements like taking a shirt on and off and reaching for something on a shelf in front of me. Totally annoying but I have had to adjust the way I do these types of movements.

Is it going to be worse since she has some more growing to do or maybe it can grow 'normal' as she goes out of puberty? Other one is that she is doing some rowing (not competing yet) and I'm not sure if that can make situation worse or even make some injury even though she is saying that it never happens during the training - hand are never above head? I am having this problem also from last 2-3 years. last year i checked with doctors and they said it can be due to lack of nutrition and dehydration so i told them that i am a regular gym guy and i drink almost 4-5 liter water everyday. Recently i left
gym for 3 month and now i am getting this problem more frequently. Whenever i stretch my chest i feel pain Stretching my shoulder Up or down. sometime even it sound like crack. I think regular stretching exercises can only help into this

I had an accident back in 2005 nothing happens to my SC joint or shoulder but after 10 years I have stared noticing pain swelling and bony growth on my SC joint that results in restricted movement... what should I do to resolve this issue ? Should I get the extra bony growth removed through surgery ?

I’m 16 years old and I’ve had this problem for atleast 2 years it all started when I started pitching in baseball I never really had the problem until then but it also doesn’t help that I play quarterback too , my shoulder can’t handle 5 throws of a baseball but can basically throw a football all day . It pops alllllll day long and my doctor sent me to physically training to “work it out “ but it honestly didn’t do anything at all . It has its good and bad days randomly but I can pop it in and out on a little move of the shoulder I find it interesting.i think I got my shoulder like this from over using it lol welp 🤷🏼‍♂️

I noticed at a young age that i can pop both of my collar bones in and out. I just move my shoulder forward a little bit and use my fingers to get in behind each one and move it in and out. It doesn't hurt. I was concerned a few years ago that when i lifted weights, that they may pop out. I took my concerns to my doctor, and he was amazed when i showed him. He told me that he had only read about this condition as it was really rare, and hadn't ever saw it in his entire career. I just figured since i'm double jointed in all my fingers, i must be double jointed in my collar bones. I use it when people are showing that neat thing that they do. If wiggling my ears doesn't compete with their ability, i pull out the collar bones. :)

I've been experiencing the pain for a few weeks didn't notice it until the other night when I lifted my right arm and rest my left hand on my chest to stretch and my god did it hurt when I lightly touched it and when I breathe in, i have had a trapped nerve under my right shoulder blade and when I move my arm I feel it and the collar bone bit hurts like hell

Most of the nerves that are supposed to be in room right near and left my doctors can't figure out what's wrong and when I overuse my knee I can't walk on it for a couple of days. could you tell me why it's that way.

The joint of my clavicle and acromion is aching. I can rearrange it at will. It came after a period with heavy lifting and went away for like 4 months but now its back and pretty bad. I try to not sleep on that side, (my right) what can i do? I really need to stay in shape becuse i have enlisted for military police and i need to exercise up to the tests. Thanks in advance!

Has anybody found a solution to this? Or is it just an annoyance I have to live with?
If I hold mine down while I move my shoulder around it feels normal so maybe if I keep it taped for a while that ligament may tighten back up?

Aswell I have pretty tight joints but it's just the collar bone I think it might have something to do with sleeping.
