I love this 👏👏👏 I am on much the same path this year, trying to appreciate what I already have without acquiring too much. In saying that I have already purchased 3 pens this year, but had sold about 8 to buy 2 if that makes sense? And I am making myself use up all my writing paper, envelopes and notebooks first before buying anything new. Same goes with crafting materials 👍 I am so glad that I found your channel and will be cheering you along this year 😊
Haha, thank you! I think we can be kind to ourselves -- honing our stash, if you will. Crafts are tricky because you need a base inventory to do the things, and then to have the flexibility to do them slightly differently according to your progress and tastes. I'd love to hear your tips on selling pens. For instance, what if I decide my Vanishing Point would be happier in a different home? Or if I decide two of the metal Kawecos would suit me better (while drawing) than the plastic models? I have hardly any presence on Instagram; for now I'm focusing on YT. Do people sell FPs on Mercari? Maybe Facebook groups? Discord? Thanks for your kind words!
Yes! Someone that’s focusing less on buying and stockpiling this year! I must say, I purchased about 4 pens recently on a whim (it was also a treat to myself for a career accomplishment) but after this, I am ‘shopping my (very large) stash’ so to speak.
That 'crunch' you had with the TWSBI? Look carefully all around where the nib is actually seated, under magnification, while applying that same pressure. You might find it cracked!
Thank you; the thought is still partly formed, but I do have almost 6 spreads complete. I will be doing a monthly flip and larger discussion of how it's going. Weekly would be too much for me to do a passable job and maintain consistency. Thanks for watching :*
so it's interesting... I had no problem with my TWSBI nibs, but had to do some work on my Kaweco (I have two Kaweco Student pens in Medium).. so, in the future, I plan to buy more TWSBI, probably not Kaweco, even though I know they are popular. And I also use the TWSBI broad for shimmer inks with no problem
I love your psychology discussion! I think that's a common theme around here, that if I buy a new pen or notebook, it will make me feel complete and I'll get to do everything I've always wanted! But then 5 minutes later we are back at square one :-/
Thanks, @stationeryshenanigans. Yup. And I'm starting to track how much time I noodle away "window shopping" and filling carts online as an act of procrastination.
That jade rose gold is so beautiful 😍 I love this video so much. Saving to favorites, great ideas for getting off the hedonic treadmill, and I loved what you said about the hit we get off of making art lasting longer than the hit of a new pen. I have a fountain pen collection video but will need to update soon because it’s so different now! New sub, loved this and excited to explore your channel more!
Thank you so much, @CreatingCuteArt. You made my day. And WOW -- I'm so happy to discover your content, kindred spirit! I'll explore your work more after dinner, and YES to your updated fountain-pen collection video!
I will "casually" floss one in my round up for January's currently inked (probably early next week), but there are MUCH more knowledgeable RUclipsrs to consult for any real expertise. I can jump in to demystify the process, and I'll do it with a nib I'm not very fond of, so it can only be improved :]
I feel like the pandemic led to a shopping bonanza. I myself, bought pens at an unthinkable rate in 2020 and especially in 2021. I was really good last year buying only 7 pens, but saying I find is a wild statement. That being said though, I find with fountain pens it a strange thing. Plenty people have hobbies and collections, but I don't find them buying so many of whatever they are collecting. It's not like fountain pens are cheap. Even the a $10 pen is like, $10 for a pen when you can get a box of pens for less than that (I think. I confess I haven't bought a box of pens in a very long time). What a strange behavior we penners have :) I'll give you a tip. To get to know a nib or pen, I would suggest using the same ink and running it through every pen. This way you can get to know the nib with one constant, that being the ink, and you can compare how each nib writes vs other within the same brand or across nib sizes. I like to use Waterman Serenity Blue. First, it's quite famous in the fountain pen community as a great testing ink. Second, it's not too wet nor too dry, so you really get an idea of how wet/dry a nib is. Third, it has both shading and sheening characteristics, so you'll be able to see if the nib will do either. For example, I have a Bock EF that is on the dry side. Very smooth, but dry. I have a Pelikan EF, that writes like an EF, but interestingly shows some shading, but shows sheen, which is quite unusual for an EF nib. Forth, Serenity Blue cleans out very well, and is well lubricated. Fifth, everyone carries it. You can even get the cartridges at Staples, but the bottle is better, and is cheap, so it makes for a perfect ink to use a lot. I call it an ink's ink, and when I get a new pen, I always flush it out with a drop of dishsoap and water, and run Serenity Blue through it. And, depending on the nib, it dispels the 'boring blue' stigma. If it's a wet nib, the blue is rich, vibrant and amazing. Hope this helps.
What a thoughtful reply. Your suggestion is really helpful, particularly since you've shared so many interesting observations about pens and nibs. Emphatic thanks. I've ordered a bottle :)
@@scribblesandinkstains You're welcome. I call it a Drama Queen, because you get so many outcomes. I have a drier Monteverde 1.1 stub, and it shades quite well. Conversely, a TWSBI 1.1 stub is so saturated that the color is rich and creates a sheening halo effect. my point is, now I have a base line for these nibs, and can know what to expect when I use these nibs with other inks, because most time the nib performs the same way, and when it doesn't I know that ink is causing it. Anyways check out fountain pen companion. You can keep a pen/ink log, and make notes on what combinations work well and don't together. Hope you enjoy and keep a bottle of Serenity Blue on hand. There's actually a saying that, "if you are having a problem with pen and you're using Serenity Blue, it's the pen's fault, not the ink."
The Lamy Z 52 nibs fit on the Jinhao 80, I swapped as soon as I got mine since I didn’t like the fine nib it came with. But of course it doesn‘t compare to the Lamy 2000 at all, I love mine and will never part with it. ;) Your plans for this year are great, I am really looking forward to seeing more ! Thanks for sharing !
Thanks @Heidejournal! And thanks for the info on swapping nibs on the Jinhao 80. I'm really excited to tinker with and swap nibs this year, so this helps. Maybe I'll now have an excuse to add that nib in medium with a custom architect grind from the Nibsmith this spring!
@@Heidejournal Really, no nib grinders in Germany?? That's very surprizing to hear. There is one in the Netherlands, Annabelle something. She is the in-house grinder at Appelboom, and she has her own studio. You can check her out and see it works out for you. Hope this can help.
@@ironmic9244 Thank you, I‘ll look into that. I heard of a nibsmith in Austria once, but I have no name… it‘s not that urgent at the moment, but good to know.
Great video! I just came over to this one after watching the last most recent one and subscribed. I feel like a lot of my fountain pen/ink and stationery in general experience is also at the same point where I'm ready to be more conscious of what I'm buying and using and less giving in to FOMO and collecting - which is a challenge for me! I love my TWSBI ECOs and Kaweco Sports and want to collect them in every color, which I guess they're good pens for that because they're not terribly expensive - but buying 12 pens of the same model-ish in a span of two months is not serving me very well beyond initial dopamine boosts and does a real number on my hobby spending budget.
Thank you so much @ShelbyHaden; you made my day. I'm trying to pick just one favorite maker with a nib I love (TWSBI for me) and then I give myself more grace than I do with a pen I don't reach for that much, like the Lamy Al-Star which JUST YESTERDAY dropped two very tempting colors, violet and petrol. In 2022, I would not have hesitated to pick both up. The "Want[ed]" journal is helping... I did allow a thoughtful stationery purchase for January, but I crashed on the Hobonichi spring release with the botanical A6 and a few other things. This is definitely a work-in-progress with wins and fails. Thanks so much for joining in the conversation!
@@scribblesandinkstains That Hobonichi botanical A6 has me reaaaally tempted. I already spent my Q1 allowance on stationery (that's how excessive my collecting got in the early part of the year) so if I want it, I have to hope it's still in stock in a couple months. I agree with you on the TWSBI nibs. Those are absolutely my favorite.
Not that you asked, but as a leftie, the Eco-T is ok for me. :) I love your focus for the year. I've been thinking I'd like to be more intentional this year, and less impulsive and prone to going with what's that current day's shiny new thing. Your pen collection is fantastic! And I think it's tough (impossible?) to resist the call of the Lamy 2000. 🤣😅
Awesome! Thank you! I am terrible at asking the questions (because I do that all day long in my profession and my brain needs a rest. Haha. I never even considered adult ADHD, but the hyper-focus and impulse-control are my BIG ISSUES and have been for some time.
Try out a Jinhao 80 they are inexpensive, have great colors and good nibs. If you don't like the nib put on a Lamy nib. Owning a couple of Lamy 2000s you may actually decide you like the Jinhao better based on the grip texture. If it is going to be inked constantly you can't go wrong with a 2000 - they are smooth and clean really easily when filling since the feed is right near the nib. As a habitual ink level checker I do like the ink window on the 2000.
I noticed the crunch on my TWSBI Swipe too! I tend to have a death grip on my pens and I was afraid I would snap it in half. I inked one of them up for the first time in months, but now have put it away for fear of damaging it. I love the idea of adding nibs to your pens instead of just adding more pens. I wish more pen makers offered spare nibs. I’m looking at you, Pilot, Platinum and Sailor!
I hesitated to critique the Swipe that way, but tossed it out there to see if anyone else had that experience, so thank you for sharing! Agree, Pilot, Platinum, and Sailor. I'd add Pelikan, which also are among those super pricey fountain pens with gorgeous nibs. I may buy a Pilot Vanishing Point nib unit in medium or fine this year, but it depends on if I can come to terms with my EF nib unit. Thanks for your comments.
@@scribblesandinkstains Pelikan does have replacement nib units. They are pricey, but definitely less than buying another pen. So if you spend $400 on an EF nib and hate it, you can get a medium (or whatever) for about $100.
Thank you for doing a video on your collection! I’m like you, you just need to show me some pretty pens and pretty inks.. so fun! On the Kawecos I have to say that all my newer pens have BB nibs, but I have been staying away from getting more Sports since I have a few vintage Kawecos which are far past any of their new pens! (I hope you’ll stop by my channel, all the pen and ink related stuff is in a playlist paperstuff.) I show some of those in „study in brown“ as well as a „mix of currently inked“. xx 🖋💫

I'm a right-handed side writer. I can do the eco-t, but Lamy safari's hurt my finger callus. I'll be getting rid of those this year. Chris Saenz has a video on swapping the Jinhao 80 nib for a Lamy. I've bought one to try out as I have a lot of Lamy nibs!
Thanks for the tip; I'll check out Chris's video... I do recall some issue with my callous on my Al-Stars, back when I was finishing my degree and writing tons of notes. Do you have any tips on selling pens?
I just did a pen haul just before the y ear started so go check that out :) If I did an ink haul it would take a long time to complete that but maybe one day ;)
