I now use two fluval FX6 canister filters on my 125. LOVE THEM.

I have an FX6 and Fluval 407 on a 110 gallon and only clean them once every 3 months. They are on smart plugs and are off during feeding. I Have 3 tangs, 2 clowns, 5 chromes, 1 damsel, 1 wrasse and assortment of cleanup crew. I do a 25-gallon water change once a month and water is always pristine. I maintain nitrate at 8 and phos at 0.04. I never had a sump, and one is on my bucket list because I do agree it is superior and would be much easier to maintenance but only want it for the experience but absolutely do not need it.

May I ask what media you’re using in your Fluval 407 filter for your saltwater tank. I have carbon, phosphate pads, floss, bioballs in mine. Do you think I should add ammonia pads? Oh and mine has the blue and white sponges

  • @jawon70

If you change your canister filter in an oase biomaster then its much more easy to clean.Because the oase biomaster has an easy to remove pre filter. And the temperature controller in in the canister filter ,so you dont have to put it in the tank

To break up that surface protein install a Fluval Surface Skimmer on the intake side of the canister filter. Works great and only cost about $30. Happy Thanksgiving.

Can you put up a link for the surface skimmer? I have a Fluval 407 canister filter on my 40 gallon FOWLR tank. I do get some diatoms on the sand but I was told that’s normal for a new tank as mines 7 months old. But I didn’t know you could get a skimmer like your talking about. :)

I have a Fluval 407 on my 40 gallon FOWLR tank that has 5 fish and to this day I have 0 nitrate, 0 nitrite, 0 ammonia, 7.8-8 PH, salinity at 1.025 and ready for this….. I do my tank on tap water as I couldn’t buy a small RO system for my tap when I started due to stock issues. The fish store told me to keep doing what I’m doing. And only issue I’ve had is diatoms on sand but every few days I take a stick and mix up the sand

There's nowhere near enough mechanical filtration on that canister filter. There's also lots of floating bits in the water column. You need filter floss with no gaps at the side to polish your water and to stop the bits getting past . You should only have it on the bottom trays otherwise if it's above your mechanical filtration it clogs up the the mechanical filtration pores. On my mixed reef 180 litre. I have the same fluval 307 filter. On the bottom trays I have Sponges with a filter floss layer on top of sponges, 2nd trays full to the top with seachem matrix, 3rd trays loaded with more seachem matrix with just enough space for a bag of Purigen to fit in. I also have a Tunze doc904 skimmer. My nitrates and phosphate are all under control. My tank is my pride and joy full of softies lps and some sps. I only have 6 fish to keep my bioload down.

I run a canister filter the easy way is to run a dose pump I have a Red Sea 4dose and dosing dd solutions levels are in Wack all the time run a auto top up aswell so it is possible nitrate sits around 10-15 phosphate 0.1 now before I started dosing my phosphate was 4.2 and nitrate 72 so tell him start dosing

Hey, so before I continue, I'm changing into a full Kevlar suit, So IMO that tank does look nice but not grate, slap a sump and control all the stuff better it will improve the parameters a lot more and the owner will be pulling his hear out cause the growth of the corals the Zoas should be much more and the Xenia would be double the size just to mentions 2 things, 40% WC twice a month is heavy just to control the tank, and keep in mind nennies also split cause of stress, had a nennie never split till my tank took a dip. talking about all the good bac but the filter gets emptied with every clean so does the bas's not flush as well and the tank takes a knock (set back). just my 2 cents.nice,
