It is happening in the US too with historical reenactments and pioneer festivals. This is part of the effort to erase knowledge and history. They dont want the people to learn how to survive outside of the matrix
Absolutely true.
I agree with you. I use to work for Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. It was my dream job. I absolutely loved it until they decided to go Woke and no matter what historical sites you were in , they had to lecture people about slavery and how the slaves built America. They didn't discuss much about the other history in the town . Basically, the British were bad, white people were bad, and Every colonist owned slaves. I left after they started this nonsense.
@@richardfranz5733 Destroying culture
@@richardfranz5733 That was smart, but it's incredibly sad they did that. We are losing so much and the citizens aren't banning together to stop it. The end of this country/culture is pathetic.
Exactly, and they're making anything Viking very politicized. It's a Viking Festival, no phones, authentic Viking, not adding Fairey dress attire, it's become a joke
I’ve been so frustrated with the popular image of what a “Viking” is that I’ve distanced myself from my Viking interests to not be lumped in with the neo-Viking hipsters. I have had too many people misunderstand what “Viking” means, and been called “Ragnar” way too often for my interests. It’s frustrating.
I’m tired of the Biker-leather, orc/barbarian/facepaint shit.
Ragnar! 😁😁😁⚔️⚔️⚔️🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓
I left the SCA when I started seeing rainbow beads in "viking" beard braids
I get you on that one my friend. In the early 90's when I was a young man, the SCA was a safe haven for us outcasts, history needs, etc.
Now it's become a social justice warrior survival camp. Friends that I had for over 20 years were straight bullying other friends just because they disagreed. It's sad but I hope the SCA falls into obscurity. They are not the same
I'm a full time festival worker in the UK. Over 20 years now. The whole vibe has changed. Phones/social media have dropped a big turd on the scene.
I drove 20 miles to see if anyone at the local Viking festival wanted to talk, here in UK. A bloke jumped out and turned me away as "insurance wouldn't cover me for going to talk to the campers, until 10.30am."
I'm not completely sure with what you mean but it sounds like some kind of nanny state fuqery
Either I have gotten nothing but thumbs down or my thumbs up have been hidden so I will just assume that no one likes my comments on this channel y'all have a wonderful day and a better tomorrow
@@chrisp308 You correctly caught that people's idea of a viking reenactment has been captured by an elite that sees only profit in it.
I avoid swimming pools, preferring to wild swim in rivers and lakes with nature. But I see now that they are advertising "wild swimming lakes" here and there, where for a great deal of money, and adherence to a great number of rules, I might "book up to swim on August 24th at 4.30 pm." (towing a plastic float).
It's only a matter of time till they stop you swimming at the seaside.
I completely agree. They are a joke now, like one big Instagram fantasy convention full of posers, it's sad, disgusting, and more than a little infuriating.
Kinda like cosplay conventions? Big, busty broads struttin' around, gettin' their photos taken, with their goods hangin' out, etc.

I visited a viking festival in Borre, in Horten Vestfold. This was 10 years ago, and people still did things without taking their phones out all the time. It was a cool experience and quite authentic. Too bad it's probably not the same any longer
Midgardsblot?
I agree with you Bjorn. It really is disgusting what is happening to animals, completely cruel, wicked and shameful.
I don't know about anywhere else, but there are pretty strict laws here in the UK about fur trading, All the pelts and fur I've bought have been humanely sourced.
The Viking culture is truly unique in our history and world. It is very sad that we are losing contact with its authenticities. I'm not of this culture, but I think it's important we remember and honor it's significance in history.
You are right about the smartphone, I would think for someone trying to connect with the Viking age , trying to connect with the Viking mindset would be more important than historically accurate clothing. As always it’s what’s inside that counts. The true mettle of man or Viking , in the mind , not to be found in a smartphone.
Vikings also sold fur, bjorn cried about little animals being killed for fur. Not very tough viking age mindset
@@pat2430 Björn complained about fur from caged animals from countries who farm them in very bad conditions.
Rheal from Canada . I agree at 100% . The Viking festival should replicate as close as 100% how the Viking early Era life was . Clothing , food , tradition , music and let's not forget how life was very challenging compared to our modern time . A festival should be a walking back in time experience to better respect ancestors and harsh living darker age . Without a past there is no future . Ancestors was our past giving us all a future .
Sounds like you and others should have your own viking festival. You may have fun going it.
So he has a valid point..? Glad you agree on this.
But first you will have to ask someone's permission !
I stopped doing civil war reenactment when the dragqueens started showing up.
I love German Christmas bazaars. Usually they have been authentic. Until one time I noticed all kinds of non-German, non-Christmas related booths. Really no need to do that. Especially as these things are for the disapora in North America trying to keep in touch with their heritage and bring to their children and grandchildren.
even in Austria in big cities, there's Native American stuff sold at Christmas markets😂 Isn't that ironic?
I got so upset when i heard you cancelled your viking camp, would have learned much more than in viking festivals.
There used to be "Renaissance" festivals in America back in the 80''s, maybe 90's. Those were more like Medieval Times festivals. Went to an annual Nordic festival in Decorah, Iowa a few years ago. They had Viking reenactments. But I haven't heard specifically of "Viking" festivals. I've also been to Celtic and Scottish festivals within the past 5 years.
We go to a very old one held in the west of Scotland. The Largs Viking Festival. It has true Viking roots. The region named Largs is where the battles took place between the Scots and Norwegians.
Also the Up Helly Aa on The Shetland Isles, that’s huge.
Thirty years ago I went to two medieval festivals in New York and came to the same conclusion. I’d rather watch movies from the 30’s or read history books(old history books). The festivals worse than Disney or like a theme park. Actual re enactors at historic sites in my county are sometimes so realistic and convey the time period so well that it is transporting. Nice for well behaved children to see, a shame when disrespected by modern amusement seekers. So many historic places not appreciated.
Do not throw books away. They are factual and cannot be re written in digital form.
@@andyharpist2938 I have books and love them but the are helping keep me stuck. They are heavy. I need to move to a new location and I am going to need a magic airlift to take my treasures with me. Working on it.
@@nancysalerno7036 They are not holding you back but might hold your kids back. For they are the repositories of the worlds human history and creativity. When the Internet is wiped what will your grandkids have then? They are undiscovered gems for time ahead.
A festival is not a reenactment. A festival is going to be more for a wider audience and probably more commercialized. I would guess reenacting, if it's anything like here in the "border" Mid-Atlantic with Civil War Reenactment, is more niche, with more rules for historical accuracy. I live just outside Gettysburg, PA, which mostly is a tourist trap; but the July reenactment is much more, at least for the participants, the "real" deal. There are the tourist shops and then there are the historical shops. The "buffs" know which from which. One must manage one's expectations accordingly.
You nailed it, Jenna. Gettysburg is fun and a bit touristy on it's own but the reenactment in the summer is next level. I worked at a tin-type photo booth at the reenactment years ago and got to spend time with the reenactors and it is a completely different vibe, they love learning about history and being immersed in it. Not that it wasn't a complete blast.
The Norse were just real people. I'm sure we have many misconceptions about them. I think the best image we can get of them is look at ourselves minus all our modern technology.
Even in the LARP scene, where there is zero concern for authenticity, the player base became more gentrified over the last ten years.
It used to be full of lovable dorks who dabbled in prop-making and leather crafting, people who could cobble together an entire village for a week-end.
Now with the rising cost of the hobby, it's full of entitled rich brats who rented their costume and don't want to get their shoes dirty.
Oh my gosh this was sad to hear because here in California I am feeling the same way. Our Renaissance Faires are now full of anime characters and men in dresses. It takes away the feeling of the entire event and what it used to be like. I’m sad this isn’t excluded to California alone.
I wrote a comment about RenFaires where I live (in Utah) in response to another comment, then I saw yours. I share your pain.
@@charlesstanford1310 it sad it isn’t an isolated occurrence. I’m just hoping that the hype dies down over time and it will go back to what it used to be like before it changed.
It’s the inevitable result of commercialization. It costs a lot of money to put on festivals like this. I’ve been to a few Renaissance fairs here in BC; they were enjoyable enough but far from authentic. People selling crap and performances like belly dancing…it’s fun but had nothing whatsoever to do with the European Renaissance. And even demonstrations like jousting are from the wrong time period, but people enjoy them.
Enjoyed listening to your chat Bjorn.
We have many Oktoberfests here in the USA. The only thing they have in common with the Oktoberfest in Germany is the drunks.
The Viking festival at Jorvik was absolutely wonderful. This was about 13 years ago, I'm not sure what it is like now. There were film screenings, historical demonstrations, music, vendors selling authentic goods, museum tours, talks/seminars from museum directors, and directions on how to get to historical Viking villages and archaeological sites in the area. There were also saga and poetry readings, beard contests, overall it was a great experience.
There is a decent Viking festival in Manassas, VA. Much smaller, but reasonably fun. More of a small tent show with vendors and food. Sure there are always a few cosplayers/Instagram types I guess. Some dancers came all the way from Iceland to demonstrate traditional dances and it was very special and they were happy to be there.
I believe there is another festival in Deleware at a brewery but haven't been.
i havent been to Jorvik festival for about 10 years, wouldn't be surprised if its gone the same way.
@@margaretwebster2516 I sincerely hope not Jorvik is awesome.
Huh. I would have thought that there would be more woodcrafts, weapons/armor/blacksmithing, weaving, fishing/fish eating (surstrommung?) meats/poultry/cooking (plus the veggies, root veggies, oats, etc.), lingonberry jam/lingonberries, stuff about Odin, Thor and Freya, Norse runes, books/bookstores, Norse sagas, axe throwing, folk music, colorful clothing, art, jewelry, beadwork, herbs, etc. Like a Medieval or Renaissance Faire, but not the Shakespeare “high English” deal, not the super fancy clothes, maybe not the whole joust, etc. deal…
there is a viking fad associated with a tv-show and some video games currently. it will go away in a few years and then it will get better.
I agree but there will still be an army of lost souls with half their heads shaved and tattoos they don't understand
In regards to the main channel not getting any growth it's probably just the algorithm not recommending your content which there's not much you can do about that especially when you cover quite niche topics.
I do think your new series on the runes and their meanings has potential to do really well and I loved your video on the Isa rune and can't wait for the rest.
Same!
You need to find a more authentic Viking festival where they still perform the blood eagle.
😂
Blood eagle? You mean slaughtering a herd of reindeer, dumping their blood in the snow and then making bloody snow angels?
@@the_gilded_age_phoenix8717 I'm not fond of over commercialized Disneyfied cultural festivals, but even with the more "authentic" recreations we should remember that the cultures of our past that we now romanticize weren't all just loves and kisses.
@@davidemmet7343 I didn't know Disney slaughtered reindeer during any of its festivals...or had guests wallow in blood puddles. Sounds quite "romantic," but I'm not sure Disney has ever done it.
@@the_gilded_age_phoenix8717 Isn't it odd that those who believe in reincarnation always fancy themselves having been kings and princes instead of scullery maids, and that neo pagans always imagine themselves at the bow of a Viking ship with their golden locks blowing in the wind instead of the victim of a petty drunk squabble with their head bashed in by an axe.
I’s 6 a.m. in New Jersey, United States - Bjorn’s just fine
This is so sad to hear.
The cultural environment in my hometown has been messed up recently as well.
That’s why I stopped going to pagan festivals, it was more about couples looking to swing calling it “polyamorous”, kink and bondage, stoner drum circles and vendors selling crap.
I am a wonderful person no matter what label a person puts on me.
Nothing says authentic Viking more than pizza and Bud Lite.
My Mom and I went to visit Norway when I was 2 years old. On June 21st My grandfather took me to a midnite Sun festival with fireworks. I can still remember it. That was back in 1955 in Oslo.
That must have been amazing! What a wonderful memory to have, and from such a young age!
I can remember bits and pieces like these fire wheels that would spin. Wish my parents would have stayed in Norway instead of moving the the US.@@courtney1709
I have not been to a Viking festival but have attended The Feast of the Flowering Moon in Ohio. It's a time when the Shawnee Indians celebrate Mother Natures rebirth ( At the end of May). As fascinating and educational many parts were there were also unrelated vendors selling a bunch of rubble which seemed disrespectful to the Indians and the event.
Earlier this year I went to a small “Viking market” in Derbyshire, there were different displays set up to demonstrate different crafts and skills. There was no charge for this event and they were not selling anything. Each stall holder gave little talks and they seemed very well informed and passionate about the subject. They also gave small battle demonstrations. It was the first time I’d been to anything like that and it was fascinating, I learnt so much. The one thing that struck me immediately and has stayed with me as a very strong impression is the smell of woodsmoke. As daft as it sounds it had never occurred to me that this would have been the backdrop of the Vikings’ day to day lives! I found the whole experience very valuable and informing and feel sad that the festivals you talk about seem to have become about money making rather than authenticity.
Whereabouts was it mate? I live in derbyshire

My family is from the most southern part of Norway. I am now in California. I am 100% Norwegian from the family that started with my grandparents coming to New York. I have 4 children adults 39, 30, 29, 23. I feel we can not find the place here to have that belonging to feel that they and I have missed out on our family in Norway. I still feel the love and cherish the time I had growing up when visits were so awesome to my heart.
I feel my 30 year old son would fit right in if he would try his life to move to Norway for a while. He lives in Oregon now. He is single and works really hard to live as a man and here it is difficult for him to stay living as it is with the out of place feel in this world. I believe his spot is to be with family in Norway. His is concidering that as he is feeling his place may be what is missing in his life. (our lives)
Our family is mostly around Lyngdal, Mandal area. The 30% of 30 year old men are here in the USA!! If my son went there to family it would be 29%!!!! He would be at home and in place where we have missed our family and growing with our families there. In my heart Norway is where we belong. (people see us as different kind people and a little odd in things we do and talk is culturely different.)
I pray this for my son to find his spot he belongs in would open his world to the great family experience we do not know we are missing this part of ourselves. We all volunteer for Scandinavian Festival in Thousand Oaks, Ca. It is heart filling. (and they do not have Kumpa!!) We need this in our lives!!
Here here …real men are happy to have and show they have emotions. Only men who aren’t secure in their masculinity feel the need to prove it by showing how hard and unemotional they are 👏👏👏

Best to be of the solution...instead of the problem...it's easy to heckle...jeers...
Wolin in Poland is very strict on authenticity. I hate mobile phones makes me feel ill being around them.
My wife is 6 ft 4 inches (193 cm) and gets it from her mom's side which is Swedish and German. Those tall genes run deep from the ancestors.
I used to reproduce Viking artefacts for museums and re-enactors until 2000. I stopped because people were mass producing items that were not accurate reproductions, and undercutting my traditionally made items. I did a lot of research, and was careful how I made items.
Thank you Bjorn..👏👏👏
You should get your own viking festival going with people who have the same passion for it. At least one a year.
I don't blame you. Commercialization of anything ruins it. But I hunt and I eat the meat and I use the fur, I don't waste it. And I will continue to do so. Just as my ancestors did so I will preserve the tradition.
I compleatly agree with you. I only got to authentic Medical markets now to meet friends.
I wish u would continue w the rune series. If ur main channel is slowing down then it won't matter if u post there.
I enjoyed the rune series also. It was really motivating me to get outside. Not that I should need the motivation, but I hiked twice (that's saying a lot after the past 2-3 years)
In many traditional festivals, the theme has changed to a party and they lost the real history.
Here in Arkansas, USA the "Mountain Man" theme is fairly gone. You see lots of man buns and beards on afemint so called men.
In Arkansas, Canada, trucker conventions are much different now. Today, instead of a bunch of hardened, grizzled, speed-rattled truckers, all you see at these conventions are a bunch of effete, dress-wearing, Bud Light-drinking fairies. It's a cryin' shame, man.

I saw a video yesterday from someone I follow and what she showed appeared pretty nice. She showed a blacksmith, someone that made the bags that were carried and was made by a man that was pretending to be a Hungarian trader. He even traded one of his bags for a blade from the blacksmith. There was even a woman that was traditionally working with raw wool with a small handheld spindle. There may have been other stuff she chose not to show, because it's not fitting to a viking festival. I'd still like to go to one, one day, but that means I need to make my way over to Europe again.
The series "Vikings" was interesting and compelling, but like you say, probably not very accurate. As you know, the Danes controlled what is now Norway for centuries, and then the Swedes. And, the word "viking" supposedly means "raiding," and what we call Vikings were actually called Northmen. The term Viking was coined in the 18th or 19th century in a romanticized warrior culture application. And if you read this, you'll probably disagree..

I started Viking Re enactment in 2005 in London and travelled to Denmark and Skåne (Southern Sweden) on and off for ten years every Summer for Festivals/Markets, finally moving to Skåne five years ago and I have seen some serious bullshit. Some people just don't even try. I've lost count of how many so called "Reenactors" that have not even read the Havamal or some that have and claim to live by it yet behave as if it doesn't apply to them. Let alone read any of the Sagas or even Snorri. A big thing I noticed was that most Reenactors I met here and some in Denmark were former LARPers. They carried a lot of LARP into re enactment. Nothing against LARP at all but it's not Re enactment. They don't seem to have grasped the difference between the two and we have a lot of fantasy elements that carried over. That goes for the Traders too who are catering to those people and the public. Blatant historical inaccuracies are all over the place. Some traders still sell a small scale replica of ship's figure head that is on display in the British Museum that was initially thought to be Viking Age but was in fact Roman. The correction has been noted in the display at the Museum for as long as I can remember (even before I started) yet there's that replica and other junk on sale. Don't get me started on * that * tv series lol. We may as well go back to wearing horned helmets. I was the Historian of a group based on the Varangian Guard/Scandie Mercenaries of the 9th/10th century Byzantine Army. Hence why I am wearing Lamellar in my picture here. My family are from Sri Lanka and 9th/10th century Byzantine is the closest I could get geographically to portray my Eastern heritage in the context of the Viking Age. The last straw for me was when a member of our group (ex larper) spray painted his steel Lamellar and spectacled helmet black. So I walked.
Definitely do a wildlife video or two.
We do strict civil war reenactments/ with real muzzle loaders authentic clothes, terminology tents even food ! That's how the viking celebrations/festivals should be and booze after the banquet not ruining the spirit of the thing and competitions for entertainment and rank and reintroduce viking ceremonies ( puss modified ) a little bit and studies and reading of Nordic documents sayings ,slogans and stories .W/respect to period
It'd be wonderful to have a viking festival that discussed old beliefs, and taught old building techniques, weaving, cooking, pottery, smithing, firemaking, foraging, runecasting, etc. That alone with communal meals would be well worth travelling to. All phones to be left off site.
I agree!
I guess Vikings had fur covered smartphones. That sounds authentic.
Idk how's it like in Europe, but any event I've been too is shoved with shitty shop booths. Maybe it's a lack of little market's in the western world.
