  • J. Krishnamurti - Ojai 1982 - Discussion with Scientists 4 - What is a healthy mind?
    Summary:
What is analysis and what is observation?
Attention implies a great deal of care, affection, love. It's not just mental attention, it's attention with all your being.
You have established a kind of relationship, perhaps very profound, when there is love. I may reject you but you have that responsibility of love - not only to the particular person but to the whole of humanity.
What is an enemy? Is there such thing as an enemy?
I am mankind. Because I suffer or I enjoy, I go through all the tortures, and so do you. You are the rest of mankind, and therefore you have a terrible responsibility for that, in that.
Is there anything sacred in life? Not thought creating something sacred and then worshipping that as sacred, which is absurd.
If there is something beyond, why do we create the symbol, the intermediary?
If I want to find out if there is anything sacred I must start very near. The very near is me. And can I free myself from fear, agony, sorrow, despair? When there is freedom I can move, I can climb mountains.
Is silence of the mind a state of attention?
    What is a healthy mind?

Like K said in the video, i don't want to be an interpreter of what he is saying. . . . . .
      But see this my friend,
The Brain is recording all the time, because that is its habit, it records because it wants to find safety and security which is illusory in the realm of psyche and practical in the realm of day to day business. Let this brain NOT record in terms of psychological matters. >>>>>
If it does, all it has is, JUDGMENTS, Conclusions, ideas, abstractions, attachments, all these are done with the intention unconsciously to pursue security. These are STORED up as MEMORY. >>>>>
When the moment comes, that is your INTERACTION with the world comes, many of them ( the ideas/conclusions/abstractions/attachments ] take the place of the present moment , so you allow them to take your ENERGY. And THOUGHT here plays the TRICK that it is separate from the PAST and plays as the "OBSERVER", but the VERY THOUGHT doesn't exist if there is no RECORDING, therefore the OBSERVER is the PAST.
So, the observer says, i have this JUDGEMENT/CONCLUSION, so i want to ACT according to it, or i want to MODIFY it or i want to ADJUST it. In that sense, OBSERVER (which is the PAST) is acting/modifying/adjusting itself, which means the OBSERVER IS THE OBSERVED.
      >>>>>
And because of this energy is wasted or dissipated and as a result of that, there is BECOMING. And which further becomes endless conflict, which brings MISERY.
And all this happens, because there is NO ATTENTION. NO ATTENTION implies RECORDING. ATTENTION implies a dynamic MOVEMENT without any sense of recording, JUST WATCHING,
so, when you are listening, hearing, seeing, all you DO IS RECORD/RECORD/RECORD and because of this IN ATTENTION, there is a NEED for security and all this MAKES you so lethargic, with LACK of ENERGY and you become terribly superficial and ATTACHED.
This is my understanding of it, which i have COME ABOUT by understanding my OWN "UN HEALTHY MIND".
So, dear friend, PLEASE DO it with yourselves and see it for yourselves. And you will DISCOVER that AMAZING FACT that we are so freaking superficial in our lives. And That's the SADDEST PART OF IT.
Please, Please, remember the above is my own VIEW, not what K has said

Not just religion, that’s one tiny aspect of what this entire conversation has been about; identity; your ego.
They talked earlier about how an ego dreams up a brilliant idea, calls it’s best attempt at a perfect idea god, and then the mind worships the thought it created
For non religious people, this exact thing still happens but the ego calls it’s own fetishes whatever it calls them
Idk if you’ve noticed, currently you can identify as another gender, race or species and everyone else has to indulge that ego trip, and many of those would call themselves atheists
But still no closer to a relationship with reality

It has benumbed them. Religions are so attractive because they satisfy a very deep emotional desire: the denial of the death of the self. If there is life after death, the death of self - probably are deepest rooted fear - has been denied. But the price for this is to drift into irrationality and havoc. Just look at Palastine, over 70 years of war.

Most of the time he was speaking to an "audience" and people would not have this opportunity, even if he received a lot of people in private and held conversations like this one with them, it's good to have the chance to witness it other than in a book. These talks are just the best - honest, mutual, open dialogue-ing where Krishnaji can be Softer, less harsh, and rely on the others (almost) on an equal footing in clarity, truth and contribution. One can see into Krishnji's mind, to some extent...
Such Sanity, Wholeness, Sincerity, respect, and Humanity embodied by all four!
Really like how one can see a Young-ish Rupert's mind and feeling are very there, transparent; he is so open and available, honestly responsive and sometimes delighted(!) -as are the other two, in their own way...
Was particularly touched in one of them how K & David talk of how a young baby/child needs to know that s/he is loved (but how 'that love is kind of rare' :( -one does not usually hear of K talking like this!)
Appreciation for those who have cared for and perhaps maintained the recordings!

K was cooking himself in his own sauce for his self pleasure. Generally.
He said we've been educated to fight. While it's well known fact it's a human nature to fight. For ideas, for survival.
He didn't observe the world with an discerning eye. All nature has been about fight and survival.
We humans are not over the nature whatsoever. We are a part of it and always will.
The only positive side of his public presence was asking questions that triggered others to start thinking. But once you do it it comes out most of the time there's nothing there in Krishnamurti.
I have to admit here, I have spent a lot of time listening and reading K with pleasure.

Well, given that the video post does not seem to tribute the 3 other gentlemen properly in the comments, let me just add that: to the left of J Krishnamurti sits Prof. David Bohm (Physicist), and to the right sits Dr. John H. Hidley (Psychiatrist), Dr. Rupert Sheldrake (Biologist), in that order. Their paying due attention to Krishnamurti is obviously not driven by scientific arrogance, but by scientific curiosity, which is the right attitude for a scientist.

What does J.K. mean when he says - K: Now, is that attention silence of the mind?
Which is a healthy, sane mind,
    uncluttered, unattached
unanchored, free mind, which is the healthiest mind.
Therefore I am asking, out of that…
in that attention, is the mind silent?
There is no movement of thought.
S: Well, it sounds like it, yes.
It sounds like a state of being
rather than a state of becoming, because it's not going anywhere
or coming from anywhere. K: Again, when you say 'being'
what does that mean? Being what?
S: Well, being what it is. It's not being something else.
K: No, what does that mean, 'being'?
Are you putting 'being' as an opposite to becoming?
    S: Yes. K: Ah, then...
the opposite has its own opposite.
S: Well, by 'being' I simply mean a state which is not in a process
of going somewhere else in time.
    K: Which means non-movement.
S: I suppose so. B: You could say that, yes.
    K: Non-movement.
B: If you say what you mean by movement,
that it doesn't mean it's static, to say it's non-movement.
K: No, it's dynamic, of course.
    B: Dynamic, but it's a little difficult.
K: There is no moving from here to there.
B: But there is another kind of movement, perhaps.
K: That's what I want to go into.
If we use the word 'being',
without movement, it is without thought,
    without time,
which is the movement which we know.
    But the other
    has its own dynamism,
its own movement, but not this movement,
the time movement, the thought movement.
Is that what you call 'being'?
    S: I suppose it is.
    K: Is that 'being' silent?
    You follow, sir?
We have various forms of silence.
    Right? S: Yes.
It may not be silent in the sense of soundless.
K: I am using the word 'silence' in the sense,
without a single movement of thought.
S: Well, in that sense it must be silent, almost by definition.
K: Yes. So, has my mind, the mind, has it stopped thinking?
Has - not stopped thinking - has thought found its own place
    and therefore
it's no longer moving, chattering, pushing around?
Because there is no controller. You follow?
Because when there is a great silence
then that which is eternal is.
You don't have to enquire about it.
    It's not a process.
It isn't something you achieve, my god!
By fasting, by rituals, by all these absurdities.
Sir, you hear that. H: Yes.
K: You hear X saying that.
    What value has it?
Value in the sense - what do you do with it?
Has it any importance or none at all?
Because you are going your way.
You are a psychologist, you'll go your way, I'll go my way,
because I have said what I have to say, and there it ends.
    Then what?
Somebody comes along and says, 'I'll tell you what he means'.
You haven't the time. He has a little time, he says,
'I'll tell you all about it'.
    And you are caught.
    This is what is happening.
From the ancient of times, the Sumerians,
the Egyptians, the Babylonians - they have played this.
And we are doing still the same kind of nonsense.
And I say, what has religion done to man?
    It hasn't helped him.
It has given him romantic illusory comfort.
Actually look what - we're killing each other - I won't go into that.

Another interesting thing. "I have perceived the thought, its structure, not fragment by fragment, so the totality has come, the intelligence, which is love; my partner resists it, what will happen to our relationship?". This is a "borderline" question in the dialogues between K and Bohm.
It is very useful to see the ancestral trap of thought. Intelligence, the natural flow from the undivided (energy) to the fragmented (consciousness) is not a personal attribute, it does not belong to space and time. Intelligence does NOT come to me or to him, as of a given moment. What happens is that, when expressing it with language, all this is encapsulated in the code of words, where the subject that personifies the punctual stories that the consciousness perceives appears. Then, in the now (the timeless), a story with actors is continuously generated. In this case: "I have had an insight, my partner has not, so I can help her, with love and tact, to reach that state". It is absurd, of course, because intelligence is instantaneous: the moment X happens, it will have a totally unpredictable treatment, therefore, it is a simple speculation to wonder what will happen. The question is meaningless.
It is like another question that K sometimes asked himself: "they are beating my sister; I, who am a serious man, who have discarded all fragmentation, all suffering, what shall I do with the aggressors?". It makes no sense, it is another leap out of the true (instantaneous) facts on the part of thought. This is infinite and limited: it can always jump from one object to another, an object being an independent form, i.e. limited, with edges. The limited (fragmented) is intrinsically infinite. As we see, the infinite is painted, commonly with a layer of romanticism that legitimizes it.
