It’s honestly amusing to see how many people in the comments are seemingly just discovering John’s concert works.
No, they’re not like his film works or celebratory/occasion pieces, but they are marvels of orchestration and rhythm in their own right.

Everybody discovers them for the first time, right?

The 60s, and this doesn't sound serial? What a hack.
Joking, of course. I genuinely think John Williams is a great composer, of both film and concert works.

Very Bernard Hermann - Psycho and Vertigo are in the background here.

Wow! How did you come across this and the Sinfonietta?? I adore both of those pieces. Thank you for sharing.
ps. any chance you have the second violin concerto? I think it's the best thing JW has ever written

Essay for Strings was published by Novello. You can easily find it on apps like nkoda. PDFs of the Sinfonietta can easily be found online (I think there's one on Scribd but I'm not 100% about that.)
As for the 2nd violin concerto, I unfortunately don't have the score yet, but will be on the lookout to see if it leaks, and am planning on posting a score video once it does.

By John Williams, the man who composed the scores to Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Indiana Jones?

Just for me to understand, that's a piece he didn't wrote for any specific movie? And the reason it's called an "essay" is maybe because he wrote it while being a composition student?
'Cause it has such a unique voice that you can no doubt find also in his music for movies.
God, wish I would write such an "essay"... Sounds more like a full piece of a a very mature composer(which is what he became eventually).

That makes sense. I don't know the story about it per se since this is such an obscure piece and it's hard to find information about this.

I'm leaning towards "Essay" being just a title and not indicative of being a student. Barber wrote three pieces named "Essay," I think it's just a title for a sort of one movement work. Just thinking out loud though, you're guess is as good as mine.

@@Silviola824 That makes sense too. I think the timing lines up better that way. By that point in his career, JW had already scored several films, so I doubt he was still a "student" at that time.

I have to admit it really reminds me of bartok music at times.

@@Eden_Rubin_Music It's the octatonic scales, especially in the fast passage near the end. Very much a Bartok thing.

Yes. I'm going to start uploading more film scores proper once I'm done uploading all of the JW concert works. I've already had a request for Elfman's Spider-Man, but have a couple more scores than that.
