- This is a short cut hack on Replacing heater core in a 2006 volvo vnl 780, Blower motor and blower motor resistor. You are supposed to remove the center under bin storage, evacuate the a/c, and remove the complete heater box to make this repair...

I've replaced about a dozen of heater cores on these vn/vnl trucks but never because of leakage. Every heater core I replaced was plugged up internally so full coolant flow thru the heater core was not good enough to properly heat the cab.
My suggestions to other guys that want to diy...
There are 2 of those spring clips at the front edge near the firewall as he mentioned and they are a pain to get out. A small flatblade screwdriver can pop them out.
There are two spring loaded clips that secure the heater lines to the heater core...use a Dremel or cut off wheel to cut a small slot in the far rh/passenger side so you can get those clips in and out. Put duct tape over the small slot you made. As you showed on your videos...somebody had done that with the heater box.
I would highly recommend using new o rings and also replacing the valve that controls coolant flow while you are in there. We have tires lube at work but what I myself prefer is sil glide gel...a silicone gel lubricant. You can get it at Napa or other places. Really helps get those o rings in place without shoving on stuff so hard.
The plastic pieces are a flanged and fit together snug...I recommend a quick spray of silicone spray on the mating edges...it helps alot!

As a former Volvo Tech watching your video. Man you did a very great job. Now as of the olid glue. It means it has not be work on before. That glue thing is from the Factory.
Thanks, I used to be an automotive tech over a decade ago. I hated anything to do with heater cores cause it was usually a nightmare, I was dreading doing this job but it turned out to be pretty easy compared to what I have went through in the auto world previously.

Thanks for the video. It helped alot. I'm not changing the heater core but air flow was getting bad. Had to clean it with acid, brake cleaner and a water hose. Yes made a big mess but I now have air flow. It had black gooey stuff on the underside. I think whom ever had the truck last was spraying an oil base fragrance into the airbox. It smelled like candles kinda.

I had to replace the heater core in my 95 chevy S10 back in the day and I still to this day remember what a pain it was to get to that thing. Definitely not a job I'd want to do again anytime soon lol
I despise heater cores I replaced one in a mazda 626 many years ago had to take the whole dash out. Almost quit over that job LoL
Do we have to take out all stuff if we want to change heater valve (coolant flowing valve) because of backwards nuts.
Can I ask how you knew heater core was leaking? I just got a job driving a volvo truck and after 40 hours driving it over a week my throat is SUPER sore, and lungs too...and my skin is "greasy" at the end of the day. All this from breathing/sitting in the "antifreeze vapour" that the heater core/blower is producing, I assume. When I start truck in the morning I can smell coolant I'm pretty certain. I plan on pulling the dash cover off it and hopefully can see if its leaking...THANK YOU for making this video!!!
Could smell it occasionally and sometimes it would leave a fog on the window that was impossible to get rid of without wiping with a towel
Am sure if it is too much leak and you remove the floor mat at the passenger side you will see coolant underneath

My condenser was nearly plugged solid, does air have to pass it 1st before the heater core? Asking because I want to know if I should clean the heater core from the outside?
What is that other radiator looking thing in the back? That’s the only thing I have under my dash. Is that the heater core as welll
That's probably the evaporator you are referring to for the air conditioner.
Hi, did you drain all the coolant to do this replacement or is there a tap to turn off somewhere? Any help is appreciated as i am about to change evaporator but need to take this part first.

This has been a while, but I think I might have squeezed off the rubber heater hoses under the hood with clamps, or removed the hoses and plugged the ends. I really don't remember, but there's 2 rubber heater hoses that connect to the firewall below the air filter box.

10 speed ? What would you buy if you have the choice ?
That's a tough one IDK I would look at the overall condition of both and take in account repairs that might be needed and asking price etc and go from there.
Was it only leaking when you turn your heat/ac on or while it was off too?
Not sure, but It got worse with the heat on.
How did you remove the doghouse
Hi I’m loosing coolant my mechanic and I don’t see any leak around engine compartment it’s not in the oil engine but almost every time I start the truck I can hear like boiling sound around the blower motor is that might be the problem I can’t smell coolant in the cab ??
Could be this, could be blown head gasket or any number of things. Hard to say. It will probably show up sooner or later.
i did the same thing it works fine otherwise its too long and time consuming job
