alright boys, nobody spoils anything, let it come to them (side note: it was a great series, one of my favorites if it wasn't for the services that killed its reputation)
fun fact, the first two volume of RWBY was completely mocapped/ animated by the creator of RWBY, Mounty Oum. So yes all of the fight scenes you see in the first two volumes is Mounty mocapping with a mocap suit then transfering in the models of the characters then animating them, and if i remember correctly, he did do most, if not all, all of the animations by himself.
Monty Oum didnt entirely do that on his own tho. The team was small but he still had help from other early RT Animators. And its been documented that Shane Newville was also heavily involved. Mocap - or as its better known Performance Capture - was used yes but it wasnt done much at all for the action. Yeah it can help especially to get reference. But a lot was the result of hard work of animators on a computer and pretty stylized at the end of the day. More of the performance capture was done for the general scenes like characters speaking to each other, walking animation, and general human movement. There’s even a great story on the blu ray commentary of Volume 2 how, during the scene where Weiss is asking out Neptune & she’s walking up to him in a “dainty” way, this irl was performance captured by an animator whose a big bearded dude. And somehow Monty, Miles Luna, and Kerry Shawcross knew it was specifically him cause of his work.
So on the voice acting: Lindsay Jones and Arryn Zech (Ruby and Blake) both had experience as performers in theatre in school (I believe even in college, and Zech had somewhat of a career already pre-RWBY). But pretty much nearly all the cast of V1-2 was inexperienced and first time actors. The story told many times by Monty Oum and Kerry Shawcross was that Monty pretty much created Team RWBY & modeled each character after their eventual actresses / his initial perception of each of them. Lindsay/Ruby are sweet, Kara/Weiss got authority, Arryn/Blake were mysterious but had more to them, and Barbara/Yang are goofy but also have a lot of heart. As time goes on and as their careers have grown, Team RWBY grew a lot. Also: Sun Wukong’s actor Michael Jones is Lindsay Jones’ husband. And its actually the reverse: Michael had never acted before RWBY & Red vs. Blue (Rooster Teeth’s first show which shares a lot of the same cast). He was pretty much just a gamer from Jersey who joined RT, fell in love with Lindsay, and then surprised everyone with being a damn good actor. He got the part in Fairy Tail after his work on RWBY. But my favorite role of his is Rooster Teeth’s original cartoon: Max in Camp Camp. He sadly got replaced in recent episodes but its Michael as Max that is the heart of the show for me and many people.
The volumes after 3 are way overhated. Sure they have their problems, like the absolutely horrendous pacing of 5 and the main characters being criminals in 6 and 8, but volumes 1-3 are not lacking in flaws. They drop concepts left and right and didn't know what to do with the story until halfway through Volume 2. It took 2 and a half volumes before the writers decided on what to do with the villains.
Im 30, as a kid I grew up with OG Dragon Ball, DBZ, RuroKen, and Pokemon. Ive seen anime go from what you’d get bullied for to a worldwide powerhouse. After a lifetime as a fan of various anime, RWBY has become one of my absolute favorites and my favorite show. Its got a lot of heart and to see it grow and grow all these years is admirable.
There's an anime version called rwby: hyosetsu teikoku but broooooo....they have S tier animation with D tier directing and story telling, There are lots of stories that were cut from the original version
You know with how this comment section exists and the dedicated hate subreddits and tens of hundreds of video essays on how its the worst thing ever. even with the 8 billion people on the planet it does genuinely feel like i am the only one who enjoyed the series post v4. Anyways i hope you enjoyed the rest of the series thus far cause God knows i did. Especially volume 9
Yep, it really... Was... Hooo boy, I'm so sorry for what you have next.

Weiss' Semblance gets explain in the next volume. The animation gets better in Volume 3. Also make sure to watch those .5 epsiodes for lore.
Ah man I remember when I used to love RWBY especially watching it as a show
