  • Power steering Relocation Guide. One problem with the MK6 Fiesta ST is that the Power Steering Reservoir being mounted to the side of the engine. this causes the power steering fluid to be cooked by the heat of the engine and causes bad steering feel, faulty pumps, strange hissing noises, cooked fluid and isn't a good thing for the car.
    The answer to this is to relocate the Power Steering Reservoir somewhere away from the engine so the fluid has time to cool down and not get cooked by the engine. You also get more fluid in the system as its longer lines and a bigger Reservoir.
    Heres my guide on how to change install the new power steering setup - I hope it helps!

    I put a remote cooler on mine as I live in Australia it gets hot but I did not move the reservoir. If I was you I'd try and route the hose somewhere else instead of over the exhaust headers they put out so much heat. Thanks for posting quality ST150 content.

      That’s for the nice words!
      I was tempted to put a cooler on but the weather here is cold 80% of the time and I don’t track the car. Maybe in the future I’ll add one if I decide to track it.
      That’s a good point about avoiding the exhaust side, luckily my new lines aren’t tied down anywhere so I’ll have a look at where else I can run the line out. Cheers for the into!

    I recommend using Castrol Transmax III ATF instead of that power steering fluid, much better. Stopped my pump whining. I used that normal PS fluid and it cooked quick and started whining again, but the ATF has been in there for ages no bother. If it starts whining again anyway, if yours doesn't then happy days. Nice vid mate, love the car.

      GuitarWean Thanks!
      I was gonna grab some, but my local shop didn’t have any available. The stuff I’ve got is power steering & conditioner. So my plan is to that the fluid in there condition the pump a bit, then in a month or so I’m gonna change it out to Castrol when I do my full service!

      If you dont wanna spend more than 20 do what I did a few days ago. Get a long fuel hose 9.5mm inner diameter (I got 1.5m from ebay) and one fitting and extend the line, I got mine next to the strut brace going behind the (looking from front) headlight, above the fan and back to the reservoir. You can feel the temperature difference between the start and the end of the line. Worked for me and overall I paid 10€ + 12€ for the new fluid to flush it.

    I change mine with the service, it literally takes 5 mins to flush it and change it, you do need to jack the front of the car up, both wheels off the floor, I've never cooked it on a track day, even at 130 mph, I check the colour regularly.

    Hi Jay, been to view a 08 plate st today, and 1 of the first things i checked was the condition of the hydraulic fluid in the res. And it was black. Also the ps motor made a whine on full lock. Does changing the fluid and and relocating the res and lines remedy the whining of the motor. Or is the damage already done. Thanx and love ur channel

    • @jaymono6498
      @jaymono6498  5 лет назад +1

      Black fluid isn't great, depends when it was last changed though as even new fluid gets cooked quicker with the power steering standard system.
      The PS motor will make a whine when full lock each way, mine still does that now slightly even after I've changed the system over, I've had no issues at all!
      As long as the steering feels fine I wouldn't worry too much.

    How you went about it makes me feel like I can't do it, clean operation!!!
    I bought a Ford Fiesta 1.4i 2007 and it makes a squicky sound when I move the stearing to the left & right when parked, but when I drive there is no sound....could it be the the stearing racks housing by the wheels or must I attempt the impressive job you did???

    • @jaymono6498
      @jaymono6498  5 лет назад +1

      I know it might sound stupid, but when your parked sometimes the ground underneath can make the tyres squick, I know this happen to me a lot in car parks etc, you sure it isn't that?
      Also the pump makes more of a while than a squick so it doesn't sound like the pump, it also only really whines when its full lock, it sounds like it might be the steering rack instead.
      The job isn't too difficult so definitely have a go if you think it will fix the problem!

      You could wrap the side that sits above the exhaust manifold, but I think the distance in the hoses and extra fluid in the system will allow time for it to cool down. Mines still as red as the day I changed it!
