Even the amazing Chris Broderick, who can play just about everything cleanly struggled with Chris Poland's crazy solos on Rattlehead---watch the one where Dave played it with guest Kerry King. THAT says something.
@@themechanix8804 Poland's solos are notoriously tough to nail right because of his chronic tendon injury. It allows him to do all kinds of weird stretches that normal people have a really hard time duplicating. So you see impeccably clean guitarists like Broderick struggling mightily with Poland's stuff whilst breezing through Marty's. Marty's only really physically tough thing for advanced guitarists to emulate is the weird sound he gets out of his unorthodox picking position. And even then, its just a matter of training yourself to pick that way. Unless you have freakishly wide hands, though, or slash your own tendons, its impossible to perfectly emulate Poland.
I totally agree. The way Chris Poland touch and mix the notes is absolutely amazing and really difficult to replicate. it's not only a matter of unique sound he use, the analisys Kiko did is almost perfect, you can try to play those solos but the result is always far than Chris so you can only try to add something your, or you gonna fail.

He's my favorite Megadeth guitarist by far. The others are amazing, but Chris has that jeu ne se quoi; a certain brooding savagery to his playing that helped make those 1st 2 albums what they were. I love that Chris Poland came back for "The System Has Failed". Such great guitar solos on that album.

Good Mourning black Fridays intro will about make you ill. Polands playing is sensational. I must say Kiko is the best thing to happen to Megadeth, he is exactly what the band needed and he is phenomenal....................
Poland's first solo album, Return to Metalopolis, kicks major ass, and in a lot of ways feels like a lost Megadeth instrumental album from the mid-80s. His playing is both so tasty and very kick ass, he's one of my favorite guitarists ever
I love Glen's work on United Abominations, and I like some of his lives versions of Marty solos like Hangar 18 and A Tout Le Monde (His Tornado of Souls solo, damn... its so bad lol).
It's unbelievable how talented Chris is, when you watch some of the early gig footage and see him fighting the comedown or completely zoning out to somewhere far away, yet still managing to autopilot crazy solos and riffs while his fingers barely seem to be moving, the man is an outrageous musician 🤘
Chris is the best and most unique player Megadeth ever had. He has a very peculiar approach that is not easily replicated. Listen to Mahivishnu Orchestra, check out solos by Jan Hamer and it will amaze you how much Chris took from him. Much like Alan Holdsworth, Chris developed his approach by emulating another instrument besides guitar. His note patterns (note availability on stringed instruments is different from a piano or a wind instrument) are more akin to what a keyboard player would do than a guitarist. These type of patterns aren’t natural to how most guitar players approach the instrument which is why he has such a unique style.
Too much legato doesn't sound metal. It's fine for smooth jazz (although even in that style I don't like guitarists who primarily use legato), but not for aggressive music.
He was forced to play that way because he can't retract his index finger. So his entire style is to barre with his index, then legato around. His style is hard to emulate, because most players don't limit their index finger like he was forced to.
I love all the guitarists that played in Megadeth. Each one of them are awesome and has their own special features and style and they all shredding bad ass.
Funny thing about that major thirds thing is that even Dave ended up using major third chords into his rhythm style, starting from The Conjuring to holy wars and so forth, its such a cool sound for metal
Man that gig is like a right of passage for guitarists playing at a high level in metal. I bet learning the set at first is a daunting task not to mention having Dave there to let you know when your off just a lil lol 😆 imo All of them have killed it and done a great job.
Nobody will ever beat Chris Poland's solo in the opening lead riff to "good morning Black Friday" that will never happen again but yeah Marty Friedman and Kiko got their stuff down pretty well but nobody will ever beat the album version of Chris Poland's opening on that track. It's like the tone or something that he got and I just don't think that can ever happen again to do it as good as Chris Poland did.
Marty is my favourite guitarist of all times since I heard Dragons Kiss in 1989 and I was blown away....But Chris is such unique and amazing guitarist as well...And he has his own tone since the early 80s..you can tell its him form 2 notes only.
Like Kiko says, when you hear the isolated tracks, you understand how amazing player Poland really is. Even Marty Friedman pales in comparison, when it comes to unsloppy and original solos, which really is unbelievable.
Chris just sounds unique. When I heard peace sells for first time, I thought solo style sounded very uncommon (in good way, clean, moving) & I had the thought of checking isolated tracks (I never heard isolated tracks back then before). Chris Poland,.Marty Friedman, and Kiko and everyone who played in Megadeth are bad ass.
