    Manufacturers should just put the loft number rather than the club number since the club numbers are kind of meaningless now. Imagine the days when you'd swing after your playing partners, and you'd ask "what iron did you hit?" That question would be irrelevant now. How about reviewing the Cobra King CB/MB irons in the future?

      I actually disagree because loft isn’t the only thing that determines ball flight. These irons might be crazy strong lofted, but I bet their launch and descent angles as well as their spin rates aren’t that far off from a “normal” iron. Lower CG adds spin and adds launch angle, so Cobra have probably figured out that 27* creates similar launch conditions that their prior game improvement 7 irons did, and that’s why they chose that loft

    I'm 67 years old (play to a 5 handicap, was as low as a 2 last year) and I play the Callaway Rogue X irons, which are strong lofted. My 7 iron is lofted at 27*. I LOVE these irons. They are long, they are forgiving, yet, I can work the ball left to right or right to left as needed. These irons also deliver plenty of height so I have no trouble stopping these clubs on the green. My average total distance with the 7-iron is 175 yards, which is a full 15-20 yards longer than the previous irons I had (Callaway X20's). I also play the Callaway Rogue X hybrids (6, 5, 4 & 3).

    These irons aren't for someone with Rick's swing. These are going to be an option for a slower swing speed player, who is often out to in swing path with an open face, fairly sweepy, and generates a few more degrees of delivered loft. Most average golfers don't realize delivered loft is the key metric, not the stated loft on the head. And delivered loft can easily change 5-6 degrees between different players. Rick tends to be on the low-side of delivered loft, since he pushes his hands forward, has a in to out path, and always gets a bit flippy with his hands and turns the head over. As Rick says at the very end, this is for the high, right, and flaired up players, which is a big % of the market.

      but i still find these clubs very misleading with their numbers. why not just stamp the numbers correctly? seen many high handicappers who buy these sets which have PWs of 44 degrees and their next club is a 52* A wedge. and now their shot game is a mess due to the gapping nightmare. plus most company fitters etc will try and sell you a set by making you hit a 7 iron which is a 6 iron loft and showing you a dramatic increase in distance.
      plus these clubs due to their lofts tend to be very unreliable with some very hot shots

    Rick, I have the first-generation Cobra Forged Tec X irons, and my set makeup when I purchased them was 6i through GW because that was more like a 5i through PW in any other super strong lofted game-improvement irons. I did add the 5 iron in the Forged Tec X irons to my bag at a later date (I purchased the 6-GW set more than 20 months ago, and added the 5i in early 2024). However, that 5i actually flies too far to comfortably fit into my set makeup because I play a 21* #4 hybrid and I hit both clubs about the same distance (186-195 yards), but the 4 hybrid flies higher and stops quicker. I am 75 years old and have NEVER hit a 5 iron more than 185 yards, unless I caught a “flyer” from the rough or thinned one badly.

    Hi,
    You finally mentioned the height near the end. If the club hits it high in relation to the distance then the loft is correct and the spin number is much less important.
    P.S. stop trying to hold off your release to reduce your pull/hook. Cock your wrists up in the backswing which will take your club more outside without disconnecting your arms and body.

    I think when companies go so low with the loft is because they're trying to compensate for the dynamic loft the average golfer delivers at impact. My brother doesn't play golf often, he's a high handicapper. He's playing the Ping i210s, but always coming short. We went on holiday and played a round of golf with some QI irons, (ping 7 iron loft = 33, QI 7 iron = 28) and his game improved, and he was carrying his 7 iron around 160 which is good for his level. At home using his Ping irons he's hitting it 140. Because he scoops the ball more often than hitting down on the ball, the lower lofted clubs help compensate for the dynamic loft he delivers in his swing. It's not for everyone, but I do understand why companies do it.

    The biggest issue with these sets is not that the lofts are jacked way up, it's that they give you the wrong set of clubs. Most stores sell the set from 5-PW, but if you buy that set you get issues with gapping in both ends of the bag. You end up with a 5 iron that goes about as far as your 4hybrid or 7wood, and you very quickly end up with a 20-30 yard gap between your PW and GW. Most people getting these irons would probably be better off with getting them from 6i to AW with the lofts they are at, but every online store in my area only sells these clubs from 5i-PW.

    • @Buckseyy
      @Buckseyy 3 месяца назад

      Great post. They should almost be a 6i-SW. PW=44 AW=50 SW =56. If someone wants to switch out of the 56 to a more traditional SW that would be okay, but they would then lose some of the forgiveability that this set is aiming towards. Could option a 5-iron and 4-iron but traditionally most would transition into more hybrids at that point.

  • @Buckseyy
    @Buckseyy 3 месяца назад +2

    It's been commented on prior, but there is a purpose for the forgiveness of these clubs. If someone has high swing speed but cannot hit a more blade-style iron as consistently, maybe they use these clubs. If they are 160 yards out, instead of using an 8-iron like many, they can use a PW or 9-iron. The spin numbers aren't perfect, but sometimes that isn't as important as a consistent strike. I think Rick isn't looking at the shots correctly here. He is focused on how low a 7-iron is and the distance. I think he needs to look at comparing these clubs to what he normally would hit from 190-200 out. Are the spin numbers on a Tec 7-iron comparable to his 5 or 4-iron in his regular set?? If so, maybe they are actually set up really well for some people.
    I think others are making a great point that companies should focus on putting a loft number on the bottom of the club instead of a number. It would help keep different sets more comparable. If companies are really trying to keep the designs minimalistic, they could put a smaller loft stamp on the back of the clubs. Would still allow for a clean sleek look.

    • @patrickdennis5986
      @patrickdennis5986 20 дней назад +1

      I love Rick's channel and videos. I love his reviews. But here, Buckseyy, you are 100% right. There are really strange thoughts people are sharing in this thread of responses. Nobody should care what number is on the bottom of the club. What matters is distance height and spin of a particular club. And if a 7 in this set is easier to hit than what some might call a more traditional 5 iron -- and it goes the same distance, and presumably higher -- the only reason a person wouldn't try these is pride or some kind of strange attachment to traditional ideas about what clubs should have what loft. Seriously, we are going to critique a club by comparing its specs to a spec of Tiger's club from many years ago? Since when should ANY of us compare ANY of our specs to Tiger's during his prime?
      And yes, I get that if you push the lofts, the player who cares about precision may find gapping issues at the lower end of the bag, but that is a different topic that is easily settled with an extra wedge.
      Bottom line, too many comments about "that loft is too strong," without comparing apples to apples. We must NOT compare the spin and height numbers of two 7 irons. Instead, if this 7 iron goes 185, Rick should compare the spin and height of whatever club he currently hits 185. Seems obvious.

    How does peak height compare between a more forgiving iron and a traditional player’s iron? Additionally, how do peak height and descent angle versus spin factor into stopping power when approaching pins at 140, 160, 180, and 200 yards?
    For example, if a Forged Tec X 7-iron carries 195 yards with a 105’ peak height, 4,400 RPM spin, and a 45° descent angle, how would that compare to a player’s 5-iron achieving the same 195-yard carry with a 95’ peak height, 4,800 RPM spin, and a 42° descent angle?
    Launch angle would be interesting to have in the comparison as well!
    I’m curious to see how these numbers stack up when selecting a club for a given distance-especially in terms of accuracy and holding the green. Appreciate the insight! Cheers!

Most of the time I'm not going for the greens with a 7 iron so as long as they are going some distance and left and right within reason I'd be happy. You should've put these in the hands of a higher handicapper to get their thoughts.

  • @davep2945
    @davep2945 3 месяца назад +1

    Despite manufacturers claiming they decrease lofts to compensate for the low and rear COG making the ball easier to launch the issue is that rear and low COG only gets you so far. Loft still matters and below about 24 to 25 degrees, or a 6 iron in many sets like this, the average sub 90 MPH iron swinger doesn't generate enough speed to use anything weaker than their 7 iron or maybe the 6. Sure, they might get the ball in the air but the gaps become compressed. As a few others here have mentioned in a strong lofted set such as this ad others like it the st makeup should really start at 6 iron and add an extra wedge rather than an extra club in the form of a 5 iron on the long end that most don't hit more a few yards farther than their 6 iron as the loft dips to around 21 or 22 degrees. So, yeah, if the 6 iron 24 or 25 degrees then the set should be 6 through GW and AW. At least get the set up to 50 degrees on the short end. A traditionally lofted 8 club set would typically get you 24 thru 52 degrees or a seven club set 24 thru 47 or 48 degrees. That allowed you the option to add a matching gap wedge or to use specialty gap and sand wedges while on the long end you could usually get a matching 21 degree iron if you could hit it or you could start your long end with a 7 wood or hybrid. I don't care what you call the club but at least give my a loft spread that doesn't force me into something too low to be useful and then I have to discard an iron I was forced to buy but don't want to or can't use. And don't force me to buy more than two additional wedges to get through sand wedge.

    In regards to how high it flies and how quick it stops I wonder if it could be related to your swing in specific because i have p790s i carry the 7i around 175 and the ball consistently flies super high and stops maybe 2 feet forward of the divot. My playing partners have all told me separately my ball flies higher than theyve ever seen. Also could be course related im sure on super hard pga greens it could be a bit different.

    The thing that doesn’t get considered by reviewers when testing these strong lofted clubs is that for a higher handicapper, they can hit a PW or 9 iron if they are 140 yards away rather than having to hit a 7 iron. Therefore they can get more height, it’s easier to control and likely to be more accurate. I bet if someone were to test a mid handicapper with a strong lofted 7 iron like this vs a less forgiving traditional lofted 5 iron, the dispersion and consistency would be better with the 7 iron. Plus in the UK, the greens are fairly soft (or wet) most of the year so there’s not as much of an issue with getting the ball to stop in time

    The biggest issue I see in the Tec-X is that PW at 42°. If you're a new-ish golfer buying this set and a "normal" 52/56/60 wedge set to complete a bag, you'll probably have a 10° loft gap. If you're buying these, you almost need to find a 46° wedge and a 50/54/58 set. Outrageous!

    I really struggled with the previous generation forged Tec x. Possibly the lowest launching lowest spinning iron I’ve ever hit. This iron is made for one of two players. Player one is someone who delivers a massive amount of excess loft and spin at impact and most likely has average swing speed. Player 2 is someone who has very high swing speed and is able to actually generate enough spin for the ball to climb despite its low loft. Not sure what cobra are doing here. Seems like this is a small segment of players, maybe I’m wrong

    The Tec-X set needs a 10 iron... I will say, though, that while I'm not a strong-loft-hater (I understand and appreciate the physics and club design around launch), I do wonder where there's a tipping point where it starts hurting higher handicaps. I have a set of Ping i e1 irons, which are not even that strong by these standards (32* 7 iron), but visually when you put a strong 7 iron down by the ball and see no/low loft on the club, it can also be a bit intimidating. It looks like you've got a 4 iron next to the ball and that despite your logical self's knowledge about the inner weighting of the club, nothing's going to get it in the air. At a certain point, I worry that could cause some people to flip the club at the ball to try and subconsciously add loft to get the ball in the air.

The amount of times I’ve had a custom try the previous King Tec/Tec X & the current Darkspeed irons and have sub 4200 RPM backspin is insane, I can’t legitimately tell customers to buy them as I know in the real world these irons will be useless on the course…

    Ive started ignoring Iron numbers when searching for new Irons, I play a set of Wilson irons from the late 1960's currently, and had them measured for loft, my Irons are exactly one club off from modern player bladed Irons (my 7I is a modern 8I) and so on. my shopping tactic now has been to find clubs with lofts that line up with my current 2I-PW set I play just with a different number on the bottom, funny enough, my PW is a modern Gap wedge in terms of loft at 52* and my 2I is 20* personally id like to see a return to more traditional lofts because with some game improvement Irons the 4I is a traditional 2I, why not just label it a 2I if its going to be 20-21* in loft, jacked up lofts are just a marketing gimmick that has gone so far we will soon see bags with 5 wedges and 4 Irons instead of the more traditional 3 wedge bags

    The stronger loft is link to people not been able to compress proprely there ball.
    If you put this in someone who have a good compression you will see a launch angle of a 5 iron but in the hand of the average golfer, you will see a launch angle of a 7 iron.
    Not a lot of spin but someone with low compression will not have a ton of spin anyway

    The lofts on the X are very strong thats true. But Rick why are you comparing the spin numbers on a Cobra X 7 Iron to another sets 7 iron?? you won't be hitting the same shot with both clubs. Compare the spin numbers to the club you hit a similiar distance. So if you hit the X 189 compare the spin numbers to the club you hit 189. That is a more valid comparison. Since those are the clubs that would go head to head.
    Also keep in mind, that 7 iron may be lofted like a 5 but it is still on a 7 iron shaft, which is easier to swing. One of the problems with "long irons" is they are longer shafted, making the swing more difficult.
    I have the Cobras. I probably gained 10 yards of distance up and down the bag, but I didn't lose accuracy. I think this is because the club shaft didn't get longer. I did change balls to one that gives me more spin because I did feel like I lost some of that in the exchange. Overall I've dropped from a 15 to a 10.5 this year. And while I can't say dedfinitively its all the clubs, I will say when I'm standing at 165yds and hitting an 8 iron, I feel alot more confident than I did previously pulling out a 6 iron. And anyone who plays knows confidence matters.

  • @theythinkimmadyouknow
    @theythinkimmadyouknow 3 месяца назад

    I think RIck knows this, but loft is not the only issue that determines distance. Most 'game improvement irons are designed to launch the ball, in short the launch angle is higher due to a low centre of gravity. This means that the loft at address needs to be lowered to prevent the ball ballooning and control spin numbers, face tech also has an implication on these equations as well. So the distances clubs deliver is often surprising and NOT based on the loft. Ricks shock at 29.5 degrees is surprisning ince he has ofetn praised the P790's which are just 1 degree higher than that. Guess the reason this is the headline is theres not much to really say about the clubs themselves.
