- Bhimsen Thapa might be one of the most controversial yet powerful figure in the history of Nepal. He was the longest serving prime minister of Nepal. He was at the power when Nepal was going through its most critical moment, the war with British East India Company. For many, he is a national hero, a man who built the beloved Dharahara, the man who reformed Nepali bureaucracy. But there are those who criticize him for inhumane political massacre, Bhandarkhal Prava, elimination of his political rivals and consolidated power within his own family. This is the story of Bhimsen Thapa and Nepali politics at that time.

FYI: There has been two Bhandarkhal Parva in Nepal one perpetrated by Bhimsen Thapa in 1806 AD as mentioned in the video and another one perpetrated by Queen Rajya Lakshmi Devi but worked on the favor of Jung Bahadur Rana in 1846 AD only a month after Kot Parva.

Prithivi Narayan Shah, Bhimsen Thapa and Janga Bahadur Rana were men with powerful thoughts and great mind. Prithivi Narayan Shah was born in 1723 and died in 1775, Bhimsen was born in 1775 and died in 1839 and Jung Bahadur Rana was born in 1817 and died in 1877. Nepal had 3 terrifying leaders back to back.

Brave, opportunistic, evil, able leader, visionary - the man was a package of all these characteristics. I think this mixture was necessary to become a leader in times such as those when he was alive.
Edit - and what happened to him was thoroughly deserved. He got what he gave. Just done reading Baburam Acharya’s The Bloodstained Throne: Struggles for Power in Nepal (1775-1914). Though the author tries to sanitise the Shahs and thus loses some objectivity, he has nonetheless done a commendable job in breaking down the gruesome Nepali history into manageable essays. What a hellhole it was back then. And it isn’t a lot better today.
A grey character, I will say. But very important because his decisions still affects us today. Be it our map or sughauli treaty or the way for Rana rulers
I agree - and more so, his was such a rise and such a tragic end that it easily rivals any Greek or Shakespearean tragedy. And of course, a deeper divide into the regional history, especially in geopolitical terms, will find his name inevitably highlighted. A character difficult to be pigeonholed.

Vikram Samvat(B.S.) was popular
in South Asia.
Previously, we used to follow Nepal samvat(N.S.)
But Ranas replaced it and started using Vikram Samvat as an official calendar and the practice still goes on.
How is Christian calendar a normal calendar?

All shah kings after PN shah was never suited for the post of kings until Tribhuvan shah became the king of Nepal ....but For me King Mahendra was the best and perfect ruler for Nepal his reign was the time when Nepal was developed most and worst king of all time were Pratap Singh Shah, Rana Bahadur shah, Rajendra Bikram Shah and Gyanendra Shah
