- The British Army is full of stories of legends.
As Irish Rangers our regiment and past regiments contribute to the great history the British Army has. Even though we must always look forward and prepare for the 21st century threat's, it's still important to look back and remember all those who have gone before us. These are the people who have shaped our service and allow us to contiune to innovate and move forward.
This episodes Legend is Sgt Labalaba an ex Royal Irish Ranger and 22 SAS operator, born in Fiji and lost his life at the age of 30 fighting for his brothers in the battle of Mirbat Oman 1972. He's an iconic figure in the Fijian community and the Royal Irish Regiment.

This is why I love this channel! Love learning about these legends and the Army in general. 👍
Ellie Smith Thanks really appreciated and glad your enjoying it. I’ll be bringing a lot more legends to the channel over the next few months.
Know what!. I hope Geoff Gilmore get some recognition. nearly had a scrap with him...,glad we could sort it out.
Thanks a million for sharing the legendary story of our Hero Talaiasi Labalaba, the other Fijian with Labalaba that came to help him is Sekonaia Takavesi. There are also enactments of the actual battle of Mirbat should anyone be interested, a statue of Labalaba is at Hereford and now one in Fiji. All members of the regiment are handed a smaller version of a statue when they leave as appreciation to those who served for the SAS recognising him as one of their many true heroes.......Just to add for your followers, my old man together with Labalaba and a few to name are Asiveni Lutumailagi, Kasiano Qaduadua and my Dad Epeli Matata were the Fijians who joined the Irish Rangers in the the 60's. Funny enough I was one of the young Fijian lads who grew up in Ballymena and went to school in Ballykeel, still hold the Irish Rangers to heart.......
No problems at all he’s an absolute legend and a big part of my Regiments history an example for all of us to follow. Thanks for taking the time to share more information ☘️
I knew Lutu in the Rangers
These Fijian soldiers enlisted and served with the Royal Ulster Rifles in Bulford UK- Whilst posted in Gibraltar 1968 the 1st Bn The Royal Ulster Rifles amalgamated with the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and The Royal Irish Fusiliers to form the Royal Irish Rangers.
Major respect for your Da"s service mate respect from Dublin 🇮🇪🙏💚
For my physical assessment very soon for 2 R Irish and if I enjoy it enough I might go for the regulars. Great to learn more of the history.
You're getting a wee sub from me lad
Thank you for sharing this mate, from one Fijian
No problems at all mate
UDR hardest working, and largest regiment in the British Army at the time. Awesome people and top soldiers. Didn't change when the amalgamation happened and RIR were created.
The UDR were terrorist still are
@@darrenenglishby7371 UDR were disbanded when the Royal Irish were formed, before you try an be a keyboard warrior do some research. The UDR and RUC took more casualties than any other part of the security forces. The Home service Battalions were piss poorly treated to appease Sinn Fein after the Good Friday agreement.
Been a recent thing watching this stuff. Really really good stuff, wish I could go back and do it all again :) Lokks like the Army still has people of the highest caliber. Well done buddy!
awesome content

@@Rangermedia what years did you serve where you mate?.....I was 24789212...86-94....great channel mate....knew all about labalaba.... plenty more rangers served in 22 since then and are still choosing to serve in 22 just to gives the other english/scots and welsh boys a wee hand FAB
Hi, I've been watching your videos for a while now, I've basically watched them all, but came back to this one. I love you channel! Speaking of common wealth, do you know if the British army is still accepting South Africans?
Had the pleasure of being part of an ex military group who took a group of recently returned Irish Rangers from Iraq on a deer stalking trip on the Knoydart Peninsula back in 2003 ....... Top lads for sure .... Even had the wee lad who was kidnapped by the West Side Boys on the trip ...... The stolen Land Rover story is for a another time ....
Nice video m8 🔥
Thanks mate appreciated
My dad Joe and uncle John were 2nd battalion Irish rangers.. Both served the full term.. I’m very proud of them.. FAUGH A BALLAGH
My dad Hugh strain was 2nd battalion Irish ranger full term 👍🏼
@@samuelstrain331 I grew up within the regiment on camp mainly in Germany, Dover and Ballymena.. my dad was in until 93 when they amalgamated.. he didn’t feel it was his regiment anymore so he took the green beret (which he regrets) and we moved to Brecon.. he got out in 2001.. were you a brat in my generation ?
@@jononeill8729 my dad was ballymena, I was born in Dover then went to Germany and Cyprus then cattrick garrison then to Canterbury, then my dad got out around 2002 after 22 years.
@@samuelstrain331 small world.. my brother was born in Dover in 85.. you go to Lemgo school? Sounds like we would of been on same camps till my dad left the regiment when it amalgamated.. my uncle went to Catterick After Lemgo.. we went to Brecon then Land command in Wilton

Great episode. How do you shape a caubeen?
I seen the 25 pounder gun at a museum in woolwich in 1993 , I think it was being sent back out to Mirbat the following year
nice content
Thanks glad you enjoyed it.
You could do an episode on Paddy Mayne, one of your Countrymen, enjoyed the Laba Laba episode.
Will do, im looking at do voice over type videos for this playlist
Good vid bro
Thanks mate appreciated
The Royal Irish Rangers cap badge had the harp, crown, Angel, and scroll. The cap badge used here on the caubeen is the Ulster Defense Regiment badge, now used when both the Royal Irish Rangers & the UDR merged into the Royal Irish Regiment losing the scroll with the imprint ROYAL IRISH RANGERS.
Should've mentioned how Tac got a near fatal wound to the chest, and still fought on to the end of the firefight and survived
I was 1RIR 82-86. Chester and Osnabruck. Happy days.
Me too. But bot Chester. my brother was. Remember Chinks
Laba trained my old man..Sgt D. Wright. 1RUR/2RIR
Ha ha. Hey John.
Got any info on sgt hugh strain royal Irish rangers.
Born a warrior. Die a warrior. True Fijian
Do you know if you join as an infantry soldier to start with can you retrain for a different role later down the line in your military career?
Yes you can transfer across to a new Infantry regiment who’s role is different or you can transfer out of the Infantry completely and take on a trade etc in one of the corps.
My dad Tommy was in royal Ulster rifles fought in Borneo Sarawak and trained laba also Roy walker from catch frase brought him upto the rank of corporal
Any chance of Bergen and webbing set up? And tips from an infantry POV in the field
Yeah I can get something sorted. Could be a few weeks though. If you need it now head over to MKR on here, he has loads of stuff on kit and he’s also in the Infantry.
Ranger Media seen! Thanks mate
Callum Elder No problems at all mate, I will get it some complete at some stage.
Proper scrap that was, and a top bloke
Sgt Labalaba a true Legend
Any plans to go 22 mate? I think you’d have a good shot!! Love from London and Dublin
Negative mate, I have other goals in mind.

Which part of Ireland you from?
Co Down mate
@@Rangermedia hi buddy just found this Great stuff from a fellow Ulster man Just got yourself another sub best regards from sunny Millisle
First time on ya channel, superb mate. I have read a lot about the battle of Mirbat. The gun was a 25 pounder, It`s in a museum back here now but i`m not sure which one. I read about Labba when he was still in the Rangers, they were sent to Manchester during the Firemans strike, to crew up the old Green Goddess Fire Engines. On the way to a call out, they were involved in an RTA and one of the guys who was a close friend of labba`s was killed. The call out turned out to be a hoax call.
Thanks appreciated mate. Yeah he was a gleaming guy. His friend Tak who was in the battle with him, gives talks on it. He was actually going to give my Regiment a presentation on it today but I think it was unfortunately called off for obvious reasons.
@@Rangermedia Pity that mate, it would have been really interesting.
How is a lad from down south treated if he was to join up ?
No differently than anyone else mate. We are a premier Infantry unit we haven’t got time to worry about where people are from etc always training for the next thing.
Ranger Media that’s good to know man thanks! Gonna try out for it after all this Coronavirus is over, cheers bro!
Alex Mulvihill likewise man, gonna try and get a bit fit first so I know I’ll pass the fitness test.
@Alex 28 my nephew I is and he went over the Afghanistan about 10 years ago,, his name lives up north in newry,, he got alot of expertise on all his hgv licences and can drive anything legally
I loved the rangers, best regiment in the army, ok yep coming from southern ireland I was called a Fenian for a while, (even though I was born in Londonderry and a presbyterian) but the bigots soon changed their tune during op banner in 88-89... But I made many many friends from hardline areas in Belfast, and I still class as my mates, the english guys called me a Fenian and had no idea what exactly a Fenian was..... clowns, so any southern ireland guy or gal watching this vid or post, thinking of an army career, you could do no harm joining the best regiment in the british army, join the rangers....and faugh a ballagh
Not Royal Irish correct abbreviation is R. Irish for the Royal Irish Regiment
Are you light infantry?
Light protected mobility Infantry. So we use the foxhound vehicle to get to where we need to be and then get out and do what we need to do.
Ranger Media ok cheers for the reply. I’ve got my selection in April hopefully I’ll be light infantry
danrice1999 Happy days mate good luck, what Regiment are you hoping to join?
Ranger Media I’d love to join the Yorkshire Regiment
danrice1999 happy days mate, of the top of my head one is based in Catterick and the other in Warminster.
25 Ib Gun
So are you a British ranger or an Irish ranger ?
Royal Irish Rangers. Legends. I served 86 to 98
Ask Dougie about me
I wonder if the Royal Irish rangers work with Irish defense forces rangers lol
Our snipers took part in a sniper competition in the south of Ireland with a few other nations, IDF Rangers were also there.
Yeah laugh. we where rangers before they even thought about starting a ranger battalion.
Nice content! Keep it up! Would you like to be RUclips friends? :]
there is a royal Irish ranger now for fuck sake be a bit
