I found and fell in love with Chaozhou totally on accident. I had taken a job in nearby city Chenghai. It was a frustrating job..and i was in a totally foreign environment. One Friday afternoon after work, i jumped on my scooter, but instead of going home, i drove off into the mountains to explore and let off steam. Randomly i drove into Chaozhou and couldn't believe what a magical place i had found. I quit that job and lived in Chaozhou for the next two years (before i sadly had to return to America). But ill never forget that city, all i learned and the friends i made. I will return someday. Its the home of my heart. Thank you for your video.
My father was born in Cambodia 1957... My grandparents also from China. Fled Cambodia to California where I was born. We consider ourselves "teochew nang". 👍 I speak teochew and Cantonese in southern California. Cheers!
Gaginang here from Houston, TX….its so sad to see all the young folks not being able or speak our traditional tongue. Seems like most only want to speak whatever language they speak where they live until it’s too late for them to learn and the regrets kick in. Keep the culture alive and speak to your young ones in Teochew before the language dies out. I consider myself pretty fluent in Teochew and try to teach as many young folks as I can.
It's always easier said than done. My dad speaks Teochew but my mum doesn't. My dad was working all hours when we were growing up. And when he was home, he would speak the local language so that my mum would understand. Combined with tiredness, etc. it was easier. I'm sure parents know that sometimes the easier route is often the one taken most! It was my dad's wish that we all spoke Mandarin more so than Teochew. We all wish we could speak it though! I'm fluent in Spanish (which is a lot more useful), and I love learning languages!

@@chasingamyya Both of u guys please feel free to let me know when you are in CZ, I didn't relocate to any other countries permanently, but I used to travel to Malaysia and Indonesia, and now I work in India ect. ⊙ω⊙ so I think revisiting home city and travelling all over the world are awesome things. Due to cov-19, i have been living outside China for 18 months alone, homesickness grows up as time goes by hahaha, 13 of this month is returning date fortunately.一切顺利各位！🥑

Great to see this VDO , my grandparents was immigrated from CHAOZHOU to Thailand about 100 yrs ago and my DAD/MUM still can speaking Teochew language but for me can't. I still seeking a good chance to visit CHAOZHOU my grandparents 's mother land soon.

I came across this today.its a nice introduction but very brief on the culture. I was expecting some teochew conversation and teochew opera and cuisine. Teochew is very rich in literature.
I am an overseas chinese with teochewnese root and speak fluent teochewnese too. Been back to chaochow and shantou. Really like the place... where my grandfather was born in jie yang... in teochew its called kek yeoh... Noting how you guys speak only english, i must say you guys are .... teochew nang boi tah teochew weuh... same like most of our relatives who grow up in hongkong.... speaking only cantonese though they have teochewnese root.

My children speak Teochew but not so fluent. In Singapore this Teochew dialect still spoken but in 20 years time it will extinct. Hope to bring all my children to Chao Zhou to seek roots. Good luck to all and stay safe.
teochew people are strong... my grandpa went back and forth vietnam and cambdoia for business aspirations and teochew people are the defintion of self built.... man chinese was banned and some countries would make it legal to destroy chinese temples where it was a safe haven for teochews hokkiens and abroad chinese alike... my ah ma always said we speak and adopt identities by the water we drink and the shores we were washed away to, we are fighting its force... bascially saying alot of our grandparents who did alot to perserve culture and send letters (qiao pi) and money back to their wives, they had it rough and alot of grandkids and future generations born in other south east asian countries and the states bascially everwhere else now... taking new idenities. ive met kids of my dads teochew friends calling themselves 100% viet or thai etc etc when their dad is teochew and speaks it with my dad when they hang out... really said and truly what my grandma said was a force where it fades us far... remember ur roots guys they did all of that and some people out here disrepecting the great greats... really sad. gaginang spirit.

Hello @@katew4099 I don't speak Mandarin :( My mum's first mother tongue is Vietnamese and my Dad's is Teochew. I grew up in the UK so we all learnt English together. Good for you for learning Mandarin! I have started and stopped lots of times and but it is still a goal of mine. Keep going and you'll enjoy China much more when you visit!

I met a lot of Chaozhou ren in Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia. Unfortunately, I always seem to miss Chaozhou when I was in Mainland China.
