- Soprano Sabine Devieilhe sings 'Der Hölle Rache', the famous Queen of the Night aria from Mozart's The Magic Flute, with Siobhan Stagg as Pamina.
Mozart wrote Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) for a suburban theatre in Vienna, the Theater auf der Wieden. He drew on the magical spectacle and earthy comedy of popular Viennese theatre. As well as being a comedy, The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ - a great opera.
David McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty, folksong-like arias.
Mozart was 17 different kinds of crazy when he wrote this.
The libretto is from Emanuel Schikaneder. Mozart made it perfect with his composition.
Personally this is my favorite version, I love how Sabine goes so softly around 1:14 -- I can't imagine how difficult that would be!

I agree she has a good voice articulation, I don't think many sopranos can sing that low at high note
Sabine is my favorite soprano and performs this perfectly, but Damrau absolutely owns this aria.

It should be prohibited to compare Sabine and Damrau. They both are so freaking amazing. They both deliver everything on the stage. Just love and admiration for both of them. Angels (in this specific case, villains).

Diana is an excellent soprano, but at times she seems to be short of breath and loses the intensity of her voice
To perform this aria is unearthly, but to add the dynamics blows my mind. The pianissimo had me astonished. Excellent. Maybe it doesn't go with the character or the aria istelf but there is no way one doesn't appreciate the magnitude of her skill.
I think the dynamic variation as sung in this video is a valid interpretation demonstrating a Queen that is perhaps more sensitive, introspective and even saddened by the ultimatum she is giving her daughter. It’s stunning, I never thought the aria could be vocalized in this manner.
She explained in an interview that is performance was one of her most scary moments on stage. Basically the gates did not open and they all had to come on stage from the side
I can't stand how slow the tempo is, but Sabine is one of the greatest postmodern vocal artists, alive.
Lol, Pavarotti was great, this singer is almost unheard of.
You know, it's funny. To me it sounds too *fast* even though it's quite a bit slower than most performances. I think she may have picked this tempo to try to compensate for the light tambour of her voice. Slow is much more impressive than fast, but despite the heroic effort it wasn't quite successful.

After that, hope you get the difference between stellar performances and the mediocre ones like Sabine Whoever XD.
@@yogajedi3337 I’ve seen Damrau 4 times on 4 different stages and yes she’s amazing. Doesn’t mean other singers aren’t. Maybe listen to Devieilhe rather than expose your lack of knowledge of current performers as well as your lack of basic courtesy.

Diana Damrau me dio todo en esa aria la hizo suya dando interpretación, voz y proyección es imposible no pensar en ella cuando se escucha esta canción. No obstante puede que algunas tengan mejores registros o voz pero el paquete completo y la corona sigue siendo de Damrau

I like the fact she did it her way and how she used 90% of her diaphragm. But I didn't really get a capture to it. If I could point it out she did not go high enough in one part. But other than that she did damn good.

I do prefer previous performer too, its not the voice, its the insane acting ability COMBINED with the malice in the aria... but I will give Sabine time, but I can't help compare her with my favorite.
Which is unfortunate as I am an actress, and it is intimidating AF to follow in a role that is so iconic, that it almost feels like youre the understudy even if the role is now yours.

Hear how Lucia Popp simply dances ballet up on the brightest notes, where many others have to make more or less effort to reach the top. Sabine Devieilhe is on the same level as Lucia Popp here.
Magnifica voce, ma le manca la potenza quasi rabbiosa di Diana Damrau, per me ancora la più spettacolare. Tremenda e terribile anche nello sguardo, il bel viso stravolto dalla cattiveria della spaventosa regina, la signora Damrau ha fatto suo il personaggio in modo ineguagliabile.
Love Sabine, but Darmrau made it difficult for every performer out there. Sabine's voice left her at 1:15. Goes to show how difficult this song is.

I thought this was intentional and a shift in the dynamic. I enjoyed it. A completely different color.
That was clearly intentional, not any technical failing, but it's a very bad artistic decision to do something mannered like that in such an angry aria.

As you can hear, the accompaniment also goes sotto voce dynamic along with her voice. you can dislike her interpretation but this is not her lacking power or being mediocre. go check her les oiseaux dans la charmille

I never thought that I would hear anyone perform this aria better than Diana. However, I was wrong!
This personally isn’t my favourite version, I really think that Diana Damrau really made it the best. Yes Sabine is very good and clear with the pronunciation, and her diction is really good but but personally at times the intonation wasn’t that good, and she was quite aggressive at one point when on the bed with her daughter, she went quite sharp at times, but it was a good rendition
