Natalie's portrayal of the Königin is very interesting and unusual. She looks enraged, but also desperate, almost hysterical and conflicted - there is, at times, a glimpse of the motherly love that lingers in the queen's heart.
Exactly. Diana Damru does a perfect job as a harridan Queen bent on revenge, while Natalie adds something poignant as a mother pleading with her daughter not to betray her. It really goes to show you that no character is one-dimensional.
Wow, Dessay is not just note-perfect but she colours the notes with shifts of mood, now raging, now holding out blandishments. This is the most emotionally-inhabited rendition of the aria I've come across, as believable as it is spectacular. Thank you, M B, for restoring the recording and for sharing your work.
Fabulous. Two kinds of madness demonstrated at the same time: angry as hell mad, alongside on the brink of lunacy madness. I particularly enjoyed the hand shivers and the eye twitching. Add to this the wonderful singing and it boils down to one thing - An absolutely magnificent performance.
I don't understand why people like to compare artists in the same roles instead of appreciate what each own is giving to that art ❤ in their own unique ways ❤ each singer is a different body and soul so it's a different instrument both physiologically but most of all a different uman being ❤ let's remember that on stage we are naked need to be generous of our own life experiences and emotional state to match the direction of the music ❤ the beauty in the situation is that anybody is unique and we should appreciate evry artists for the gift them represent to the world ❤
Nathalie Dessay est de loin la meilleure reine de la Nuit... merci beaucoup pour cette voix magnifique et expressive, vous êtes la Reine de la Flûte enchantée ❤❤
Mozart's total definition of a Lunatic QOTN 👸 we should feel her desperateness, distress, and hopelessness. This acting really captures a connection to the audience. Dessay really proves, that she can unleash the QOTN anguish and true embodiment of the role, she's irreplaceable, up to this date no one can surpass how she raised the bar for the QOTN on her farewell to this role. What a legacy. Brava!
When you realize she was part lunatic, a lot of her actions make sense. As for her dress, someone commented about it. I agree, but I don’t think it always needs to be black. And midnight blue would’ve been perfect. Her dress looks more like Queen of the Dawn rather than Queen of the Night. Her voice is perfection. I could listen to this version forever.
Absolutely stunning performance by her... this woman is a true artist, it brings me pain to sink back into the mundanity of real life after being so engrossed in the fantastical.
I really like the costume in this version, it makes it more believable that she could be good instead of the costume giving away the fact she's evil in the beginning of the opera.
Tough choice! The subtlety of the acting in this performance vs. the out and out fury of Damrau's. The staccatos are an even match between the two. In the end I preferred the slower pace of Damrau, this one felt a bit rushed, but that's just a personal preference.
@@douglasburnside I don't understand how you could even compare them. I watched both performing live and Diana Damrau struggled during the whole act. Her staccato is forced and paused while Dessay is flow and natural, a real singer. Diana Damrau is only being praised because of social media and the aesthetics of the video performance, which in my opinion is too dark and doesn't represent what Mozart wanted for his Opera. She's not a good singer at all
This despair gives another great perspective on her hate. Amazing! Cristina Deutekom's eyes and posture, Diana Damrau's enraged sentiments and Natalie Dessays' body language.
I would love to but unfortunately, it's not available anywhere with Natalie singing, there's only a very old and bad image quality upload here on YT but with another singer.

This is what happens when a feckless daughter counts the cost of having failed to peel those potatoes when her menopausal mother comes home early from a trying day at the office...
Love Natalie but this acting was more suited for Verismo, I find it too much and out of place here. It doesn't suit the music or the character at all. Very distracting, I am seeing a Tosca but hearing Mozart 🤨
this is by far the best Der Hölle Rache interpretation I've ever seen and I've been to more than 100 Die Zauberflöte operas in the Vienna State Opera, Palais Garnier in Paris, Royal Opera House in London, and many others in the World since this is my favorite opera of all time. I don't think you have the knowledge to judge and have an opinion about it.

it's exactly my perception of Natalie's acting too. For sure my favorite of all.
thanks for your comment, it allowed me a completely different experience! 😊

She looked a bit pissed off to me!
A unique piece of acting that captures the actual horrible context.
Absolutely amazing performance!!! Natalie Dessay also played the Queen of the Night in 1995 with Les Arts Florissants which is well worth a listen.
Her acting is as good as her singing! What a treat😊!

Well, remember, she was probably lately the Queen of the Dawn, or at least much more popular. She's recently had a very messy divorce.
most great artists are crazy. 'normal' people don't often make great artists.
Good Lord, that was magnificent !
Absolutely stunning performance by her... this woman is a true artist, it brings me pain to sink back into the mundanity of real life after being so engrossed in the fantastical.
Actually, the Queen is completely right. Her husband was a jerk who took away from her something that was rightfully hers and Pamina's.
Grandísima Natalie Dessay! BRAVO!!!
Outstanding Both as an actress and a soprano. Also very clear German ❤🎉❤
