I ended up buying the SP8 i5 16GB/256GB from Microsoft eBay sale here in Australia along with the signature keyboard for $1390 AUD ($870 USD). Compared that to the $2500 ($1560 USD) SP9 i5 16GB/256 + signature cover bundle I don't think I will be missing $1110 AUD ($695 USD) worth of features :). I consider this an absolute bargain.

How is your experience with it so far? I really like how "cheap" the SP8 is compared to its counterpart, but I'm afraid it has a lower price because of its poor performance and potential numerous issues. Hopefully this isn't the case. Can you share your experience with it so far?

At the moment, here (Germany) I can only preorder the 9 from the MS store for shipping in early november. But they add the pen for free, which almost makes up for the price difference to a new 8.

New subscriber here! I was able to pick up Surface Pro 8 bundle, i5 8 gb 256 gb including Signature Keyboard and S Pen 2 for $899 at Costco. In your opinion is 8 gb enough RAM for general tasks…email, Office 365, internet, drawing (Krita), RUclips? Will this get me through a few years? Just looking for your opinion. @@TabletPro Awesome! Thanks for the quick reply. Costco is running a special now for the SP9 i5 16 gb 256 gb for $1,099 including Keyboard but not the pen. Was wondering if it was worth the $200 upgrade plus the cost of the pen. I’m surprised how fast the SP8 i5 seems in actual real world use.

    • @TabletPro

if the money isn't really an issue the pro 9 is faster. multicore cpu tasks should be much faster. But it's a matter of trade off, cost / speed. I think there are software limitations and bottlenecks as well. If I had my choice, I'd personally get the Pro 9. I think it is better in almost every way. Just a matter of how much better and is it worth the price difference.

Seemed unnecessary. For a phone…. Making it waterproof makes sense to remove more ports and eventually port less. For tablet??? How much space can that port really take? They made the battery smaller and took away a port…. ??

both version run andriod apps with emulator as far as i know. I don't know if the ARM version would run them without an emulator. In my limited experience the emulated android apps were VERY slow. I'll have to test again. download the play store from the microsoft app store and you can test it currently on your machine.

Upgrading from a computer, tablet, or smartphone that's less than three years old to another is incredibly irrational.
That being said, I think the efficiency cores on the Surface Pro 9 are going to have a positive effect on heat and battery life when compared to the 11th gen eqipped Surface Pro 8.

Should be good for battery, media consumption, and non-graphically intensive indie games. If not, I'll probably upgrade to a Surface Pro in another 2 years. I'm looking forward to what Intel is promising for their future CPUs, in terms of performance per watt.
