- Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained.
As requested, today we’ll be exploring District 9, the 2009 sci-fi thriller directed by Neill Blomkamp, based on his 2005 short film “Alive in Joburg”.
Starring Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope, Vanessa Haywood and David James, the film documents humanity’s first contact with extra-terrestrials. When a large alien vessel enters our atmosphere and begins hovering above Johannesburg, the world waited in awe, but nothing happened for three months.
With the ship simply hovering over the city, South African authorities decided to cut their way into the spacecraft on June 3rd, 1982. Although the technology on board was astounding, the condition of the aliens was appalling. Having run out of food, water and medical supplies long ago, all of the creatures (revealed to be workers) were malnourished, aimless, and living in squalor.
Under tremendous international pressure, the South African government ferried the 1.8 million non-humans to a temporary refugee camp. Called District 9, the camp was composed of a number of shacks built for the residency of aliens. Unfortunately, following many riots, a rise in interspecies crime, and several destructive acts by the aliens (referred to as prawns), District 9 quickly turned into a slum.
After 20 years of rising conflict between humans and the aliens, the government relented to public pressure, deciding to move district 9 away from Johannesburg to a remote location. To aid in the forced eviction of 1.8 million nonhumans from their sanctuary, South Africa turned to a private corporation. Founded in 1965 as a manufacturing company, within two decades they expanded worldwide, rebranding themself as Multi-National United the same year the aliens arrived.
Initially put in charge to contain the newly arrived prawns, MNU spread into numerous industries and quickly became the world's second largest weapons manufacturer. Within years, the company was involved in everything from telecommunications to nanotechnology. Of course, it was their involvement in the privatization of police services that made them so useful to the government. As the exclusive provider of law enforcement services in Johannesburg, Multi-National United operated with a large contingent of mercenaries.
Partially presented in a found footage format, featuring interviews, news clips and security footage, District 9 is rife with themes of xenophobia, social segregation, and what it means to be human.

District 9 is literally so interesting and underrated I wish we could’ve got a sequel
Neil Blomkap as well as the titular actor(forgot his name) have both confirmed the sequel is in the work.
@@thatguy4413James Cameron talked up avatar 2 so much and it wasn’t all he said it would be, don’t be too hopeful on this one
@@Jj_2723 Perhaps for you personally but money wise, it's killing it
@@thatguy4413 i sure hope so. Been waiting for one for quite a while
@@liljuanito123 as stated it's been in production hell, as well as Neil also making CHAPPIE & Elysium, among other works. Neil also gone on record that the sequel would draw inspiration from the American Civil Rights movement.
I've always felt that this movie is underrated.
It really is ,the sequel would've been great
Very true.. It holds up well even to this day with all the fancy CGI!
Yeah it's one of my favorite go to movies if nothing is on
It definitely is.
@@jessyavila5317 you meam the sequal will be great, theres one in the works right now.hopefully a year or two at the very most we will get the prawns coming back.
I hope they make the sequel to this movie sometime soon, I’m dying to see more of this story ever since the movie came out
Probably wouldn't be interesting.
As an advanced civilization they would probably just stop by with a few ships, pick up their people, destroy appropriated tech centers and leave
Never gonna happen. It's perfect the way it ends
@@stormengine3261 Aliens return to earth and human are enslaved.
One film is enough. I like my imagination running wild about what happened after moved to the new camp
I hope they don't, it will be bad and then I'd get to blame people who have been asking for it.
Like it's your fault they ruined the whole story. What did you think would happen? More documentary style filming? Nah it's gonna be closer to Independence day with more orbital bombardment. Is that really the crap movie you asked for?
i don't remember a SINGLE other universe where the aliens are portrayed in this way
Because it’s to damn real and people don’t wanna feel that uncomfortable. Personally love the film.
We need more Sharlto Copley movies! This movie was epic on its own but he brings such raw realism to the character Wilkus.
Definitely! I think he was the leading role on Chappie also!
Go watch Hardcore Henry
@@kidcharlemagne1002 I’ve been meaning to check that out. I will.
@@KC_Smooth oh it's proper action cheese. It's definitely better on the big screen, but still a gem.
Interesting note: Van Der Merwe is equivalent to Irish in South African jokes. For example, where we would say an Englishman, a Scot and an Irishman walked into a pub, in South Africa, it would be an Afrikaner, an English and a Van Der Merwe walked into a pub.
This movie deserved a sequel. It was so good with some great unanswered questions
@@suezcontours6653 What the flying fuck are you talking about? It's a typical sci-fi movie geared towards a theoretical situation of the many outcomes relating to first contact of extraterrestials. It wasn't made for some retarded notion of fueling racism.
don't count it out yet!! theres been talks about a second one the past year
Watch chapi 1st then district 9 they are somehow connected
The director never made a second one because he said he wanted to work on other projects
careful waht you wish for
they might ruin it if they do.
I'd be surprised if they didn't come back with a warship. They may not outright invade, but will definitely liberate the camp assuming their civilization is intact
That also assumes they actually care about them. With how nothing happened when they originally arrived and the poor state they were in, I think its unlikely. Maybe its a Golgafrincham B Ark situation lol
@@hotmailcompany52 I love how that book is still alive
That’s what I thought a sequel would include
@@hotmailcompany52 well at least one leader caste cared about the worker drones
@@cpob2013 Thats true but then why did the rest of the leader caste die (Wouldn't they be important than the workers?), why did nothing happen when they arrived and why did they run out of food? if they can travel from another galaxy I feel like they can easily pack enough food and supplies to last them for longer than they need in case of emergencies and such. Although that does raise the possibility that Christoper Johnson killed the rest of the leader caste for some reason. Maybe he actually cares about the workers unlike the rest of the leaders/officers? Maybe they wanted to wage war against humanity for earth but Christoper Johnson wanted to avoid the slaughter of humans and non-humans and came up with a plan to stop them? Bit of a reach though and uh I guess that didn't go so well lol
I visited Soweto, a township of Johannesburg, the day I saw this movie in Pretoria, South Africa in 2009. It was a shock to see that the plight of the prawns was near identical to the conditions I saw Black South Africans living in.
Lookup BI Pakathi on youtube, ...there's a bit more to it.
Thanks for pointing it out. The message of the movie was too subtle....
Sometimes, when one has been living in the dark for so long, one may need an obvious beacon to find their way back to the righteous path. @@ordoabchao4202
Their own doing when they raise warlords.
The scene where he is forced to test the weapons always gets me inside
The way he was pleading yet they didn't care at all
It makes me sick to know that government is definitely doing that stuff and worse to people. Theres no way they can develop vaccines and viruses and any bio tech so fast without using living human guinea pigs to test on. Imagine what it to to develop the c19 vax so fast! Probably tested it on poor people somewhere 😢
I really wish we would get a follow up film. I loved the atmosphere of this film. A constant rewatch for me!
They’re currently working on the 2nd film with the original director
@@silentnoiz I love you kind sir
Chappie
Where ? I have looked recently and there is no mention of Neil working on a sequel. He keeps saying after the next movie.
if we want the sequel, it needs:
the color shading
shaky camera
the african sing in the background
better motion blur animation (or sharpen it)
This film is one of my absolute favorites and can easily rewatch it over and over, glad you're covering this one !
lets be honest i think it would be understandble if chris just glasses earth for being so morally bankrupt like what if their are other spacefaring species and the prawns mention oh ye humans are heartless species to treated our refugees like pests the worst way to start interstellar reputation for your species. but ye this film 10/10 in terms of si fi movies
Honestly one of the most touching parts was seeing christopher promise to come back, despite everything he was loyal and honest with Vickus and if we ever do get a sequel i would love to see a segment or two of christopher talking about him to lil cj and then looking for vickus through out district 9, that being said, the possibiliy of the praun returning for war is horrifying, their simple weapons outclass humanity a hundred fold, i cant imagen what their equivilent of nukes, tanks, warships, even heavy artilery is like and just how easily they could destroy humanity
It would be boring af to have them come back with war in mind its more likely to be they get home and something destroyed them or something weakened them so much they can barely function but do everything to get back to help their people. Maybe they had a war or an invasion and everything is dead so the only ones left are on earth. It would be alot more interesting
remember what wickus said about christopher, hes sharp. with wickus on the ship, they would be the leader of 2 species, liberation, Peace treaty oh my god. the MNU fucked up, plus christopher seeing his mates being experimented on. saying for another sequel is dangerous.
Nominated for 4 Oscars including Best Picture.
When my dad saw the trailer, h said it reminded him of Planet Of The Apes and Alien Nation rolld into one.
A sequel has been in development hell since 2012, and is likely to start Production this year. Neil Blomkamp was even considered for Directing two other Sci Fi Franchises, ROBOCOP and Alien, but both these movies would be scrapped as with the studios weren't interested or that Blomkamp was very difficult to work with.
rhis movie is an analogy in how exploiting others is a human condition, ans the evil we do upon eachother. especially during ww2 and the colonial era.
And he was making two other movies, chappie n Elysium.
@@pyroromancer Isn't District 9 a critique of South African apartheid? Many of the opening scenes of people protesting against the alien species are real but are actually about humans.
Also he was going to be directing a Halo film with Peter Jackson and WETA producing. Even Spielberg showed interest.
@@peterbobby99 Not apartheid, but immigration. There's been a lot anti-immigration sentiment due to politicians falsely blaming those from other african countries for all the local problems.
Wikus becomes more humane as he became less human how ironic
I'm on the fence because, while I would like to see a continuation of the story, this movie as a stand alone holds so well.
Edit: Now that I think about it, a prequel (movie or series) would be nice too.
Agree. One of the greater parts of this movie is that bitter sweet ending.
Yeah, I feel a sequel would be anti-climactic. The chances are in three years human tech will not have advanced enough to deal with the prawns. As a result, if even a few hundred prawn soldiers show up with exo-suits it is not going to be a good day for humanity short of some deus ex machina. If humanity is lucky the prawns don't show back up vengeful, but just come to pick up their people, and if humanity is smart they let them and don't interfere. It would be interesting to get some questions answered about the background of the prawns and what went wrong on their ship's journey, but at the same time, I think the film stands pretty well on its own as an allegory for man's inhumanity to man made slightly less uncomfortable by it being another species. One could have easily switched this to a tale of how many societies treat minorities or the underprivileged in the sprawling slums in their cities. Ironically, humanity is lucky that something messed up the prawns while in route as with their tech humanity likely would have played the Native Americans trying to cope with the Europeans showing up in the 15th, 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries. Where they subjugate or exterminator the primitives that occupy the land they want.
@@kentvesser9484 I think a war is a predictable story though. District 9 told a very unique alien sci fi story, there's really nothing else like it. So a sequel would have to tell something super unique and satirical too
Growing up with what some call "classic American films" (mostly from the 80s though) this south African film felt a million times more like those films then about Any film Hollywood has made in decades.
As an American, i approve this statement.
They'd rather keep feeding us recycled garbage.
I remember back in 2009 when everyone wanted to see Avatar because James Cameron directed it, but the video store in my town didn’t have any copies since everyone wanted to rent it out. So we saw District 9 sitting there so we decided to give it a watch. Boy was it fucking awesome! To this day I’d rather watch District 9 than Avatar any day.
District 9 was a film I literally rolled my eyes at when I saw the trailers. Then I watched it and fell in love with it. It deserves a sequel more so than a lot of films that have gotten a sequel.
Great video 🤌
This movie is actually a very well made motion picture . The CGI is great for the budget they had . The story is refreshingly original and the style of the movie was very entertaining. I always hoped for a part 2 . Seeing as Avatar 2 took 15yrs I’ll always keep a look out for a sequel lol although I won’t hold my breath lol . One of my favorite movies ever ! Please make a sequel 🙏🏽
Neil Blomkamp needs to come out with another movie, then do his idea for Alien. I believe this man knows science fiction and he is still one of the best directors.
i saw all the pre production stuff he did for it, i was so hype....then ridley scott fucked it all up with his shitty movies
His Halo concept short was fricken amazing.
Well, now we have Gran Turismo lol😅. But hey I still was entertained by it
I remember after seeing this film just how savage we as humans could be not just to the aliens but to each other. A memorable film that holds up even well to this day with all the CGI!
This movie needs a sequel
Big facts
YES! I am so happy to see this movie still being covered and appreciated! Your vids are amazing, can’t wait to watch!
Highly underrated sci-fi film. I would kill for a sequel and also am grateful for the writing and realism this movie delivered. 9.5 out of 10
SUPER happy you explained this in full!
The scene of his stoping a rocket using the exoskeleton is iconic.
The special effects in this movie are amazing and still hold up
Christopher: if you want to change back now we still can.
Wickus: no I'll just stay this way I think.
Loved this movie so much. It was both gritty and the story was compelling and emotional. I still hope we get to see a District 10 someday
This was excellent. Thank you for posting, fascinating story well summarized.
I saw this as a kid when it recently came out (I was around ten) and didn't understand much, but it looked cool and I rewatched it when I got older and fell in love with the movie. It's criminally underrated and deserves a sequel
Thanks for this video man i loved this when it came out and still have some nostalgia towards it.
District 9 really deserves a sequel or a tv series
One of the best and most original movies I have ever seen. Absolutely loved this movie and can't wait until the next one comes out.
Super underrated movie one of my favorites I wish there was a sequel or prequel love these breakdowns
Thanks for this! Great movie and you’re Always making amazing videos. Thank you for what you do
Your reviews are a must. They don't spoil the movie, they make me want to see it, that much more. And your voice is perfect for narration. Excellent, indeed.!!
Can’t get enough! FilmComicsExplained FOREVER!!! ❤
Finally! I love this movie one of my all time favorites. Thanks for covering it!
No problem!
Great break down, Thanks for posting this.
Delicious shrimp Bois 🍤🦐
One of my favorite sci fi movies ever. Watching it stoned out of my mind in 2010 definitely added to my experience with it. Movies with some documentary elements like District 9 and The Fourth Kind always get me!
Lesson of the story: don't touch weird shit you don't know
Also, treat others how you would like to be treated!
@@filmcomicsexplained I wish they had flipped the aliens to be an allegory for "white people", actually. It would have made more sense since it's in South Africa. Black people feel right at home, it's the Europeans that tries to terraform indigenous environments.
I actually think that if Don't Worry, Darling 2022 had any common sense the twist would have been that they are in Orania in South Africa, an entirely white town where they CHOSE to emulate the 1950's ideal like Apartheid. It's irony would be that it's a bunch of white invaders coming into a foreign country trying to create an exclusionary community in an indigenous country when they could essentially just go back to Europe or live somewhere else.
Amazing film with a lot of potential for a good sequel. I remember watching this multiple times over the years.
This shit is a classic glad they’re finally making a sequel
Hold up... you fr? 😲
Ikr the trailer was real promising i hope they managed to get the cast back.
I remember it was summer right before my junior year of high school when this came out, and I heard almost nothing about it, and nobody seemed to like it much. I forgot exactly when _I_ saw it (it must have been years later) but when I did, I had a nerdgasm. I'm a sucker for alien-human interaction and how alien life and technology could be so vastly different, and this movie hit the spot. The enormous ship, the excellent alien design, the vastly different, yet within reason weapons.
Dankie bro for doing this, love to my country's movies in videos.
Love your videos keep up the good work
Neil Blomkamp is such a great director, his films are truly works of art with incredible worldbuilding
Great explanation of an excellent allegorizing movie! 💯
Great video man
Yes I'm so happy you are doing this movie I always felt that this would be great content coming from you
Great job on the video ❤ thank you
I love watching this film. Every time I watch it, some new parallel between the story and how we treat one another in the real world is revealed, and it saddens me. But damn if it isn't great.
This movie was excellent! I didn’t have high expectations going in but afterwards I was blown away! Great acting crazy how it’s so underrated!
Fantastic. Thank you!
I loved this movie and have been hoping for a sequel for years.
Perfect example on how we humans react even among ourselves. I would love to see a sequel to this movie too.
I'm still waiting patiently waiting for the sequel. The fact we've barely been getting any news for it though has me worried slightly
Hey, Niyat! Loved this video, and was wondering if you could do a video on another Neill Blomkamp action movie, Elysium? Always felt like it didn’t get the appreciation it deserved. Thanks for the videos!
In 2009 this movie blew my 15 year old mind
way under rated. this movie will go down as one of my favorites for sure.
Im still waiting for District 10. I know it will come.
I love how you tell this story like history.
Cat food. Something about cat food. Heck, my pet box turtle loves it too 🤷♀️
Oh yeah there's no accident that the alien community looks like an impoverished South African Township.
This movie was ahead of it's time
Thank you for another excellent video on an excellent movie
The guys that made these films are so a head of their time special effects wise of course other things but the effects always blow me away with this film especially what it's compared to know
This is a great movie. Thanks Niyat.
This movie was amazing, and your video explained it perfectly! What's more is that Neil Blomkamp is working on a sequel called District 10, and it has yet to be officially revealed.
I've watched and enjoyed District 9
Definitely enjoyed watching your vid talking about this film
Absolute gem of a film!!!!!
Give us a sequel pleeeaaaaase🇬🇧👊🏻
I've waited a long time for this
Yay I like this more detailed district 9 breakdown
Such a cool movie! thanks for the video
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved this film. Wish there was a part 2. Plus a video game would have been HECTIC
A video game would be awesome
This movie plus 'Enemy Mine' (1985) are my all-time favorite sci-fi films.
One of the few movies that made alien weapons feel realistic like how weapons should be like, not easily dodgeable slow moving glowing plasma stuff.
Such an interesting concept I love it
This movie is amazing! Looks so real and great at taking on a social issue.
Amazing movie. Amazing director. Both very underrated. Special effects are still better then anything released in the last decade..
Vicus was best explained by " Ian not saying what he did was right but he took the choices that were given to him."
Thank you for making this video.. I owe you 6 beers my guy
great film great vid thanks guys
The world of district 9 is very ripe, you really did a great job explaining everything and now I am going to watch it again asap!
My favorite movies are ones with immersive worlds.
Damn shame we never got a follow up to District 9. Great film, wonderful plot and story, fascinating Sci-Fi and some awesome FX.
This was awesome thank you. I so wish theyd expand on the D9 mythos. Or even yet make a prequel !
Good choice to cover, underrated movie to be sure
Such an underrated movie...the acting & story was so well done
Great Video 👍 could you do Chappie next I think it hits on alot significant themes of existence and consciousness
So fucking sick! I've been wanting a video like this about the movie for YEARS! thank you man
District 9 is really a one of a kind movie to me. I've never experienced anything else like it
That was such an awesome movie!! They better be making a sequel!!
FINALLY!!!!!! Ever since this movie came out, Its always been in my top 25. This should've been a game because the alien weaponry is still fantastic to watch in action!
The scene where the mech shoots the pig at the guy will always be funny lmaooo
Yooo District 9 is hands down my favorite movie
I just watched this movie
Absolutely loved it
I love these short recaps of movies because I don’t have a lot of time to watch all the films I love. (Also I’m less interested in rewatching films then just revisiting them!)
i was always get a chuckle when i see the legendary pig shot XD this is one of my favorite movies full stop, right up there with chappie
