The best reactor type is the rods bundled up in groups because the make more energy for less fuel. Use Destabilized Redstone anywhere adjacent to a rod, diagonals don't do anything.

The best design I've come across for BR is a 9x9x3 "pancake" reactor, with a 7x7x1 interior. Around the outer edge place resonant ender, and in the 5x5x1 square in the middle make a "waffle" (easy to remember, pancakes and waffles) with 5 rods, 3 rods alternating with cryotheum, 5 rods, 3 and cryotheum, then 5 rods. The basic unit produces about 15k, but it is extremely energy efficient at .128mb/tick and when actively cooled produces enough steam to run 4 turbines which makes it easy to upgrade later. If you need more power than the 4 turbines produce move on to a draconic reactor.
the amount of actively cooled reactors and the number of coolant imports and water sources to accommodate for this would be unreasonable. From what I can tell, only if you have the turbines one on top of another reaching from y-0 to y-256 will you get all of them in a decent render distance. not even kidding. plus, this will 100% guaranteed crush Jordan's computer. WHILE building it. Attempting to use MCedit will make it even worse.

Also, to answer the question "how could you build this in sky factory?" - You don't. You get a turtle to do it for you.

It's been a while since I played with Big Reactors, but I'm pretty sure that the outer layer being Cryotheum yields better efficiency and production, for the simple reason that ALL the fuel rods will be touched on their 4 sides and the whole casing will touch Cryotheum. actively cooled/turbine reactors use to the maximum potential of big reactors would be impossible for Jordan. His computer could never handle it. I doubt even 5% of the world has computers able to support it. Also, the RF output will be somewhere in the ball park of billions of RF/tick. It's ducking ridiculous but... eh.

One of the most fuel efficient designs for a 5x5x5 (inside) I've found is to use 21 fuel rods everywhere except the corners. Put cryotheum in the 4 corners. Set control rods to 92%. You get ~105k RF per millibucket and ~5665 RF per tick. In terms of maximizing power output, the best 5x5x5 I've found is 22 fuel rods and 3 cryotheum. The outer ring (5x5) is all fuel rods (16). The next ring in (3x3) is cryotheum in 3 corners and the rest fuel rods (5), and finally a fuel rod in the very middle. This nets ~20.9k RF per tick (0% control rod). This seems to be the absolute most you can crank out of the 5x5x5 (7x7x7 outside).
Sweet Baby Jesus! This thing is Crazy! It is just a hella impressive to me, how much this thing produces. We had a pretty large reactor in our server which powered up our city and all the different stuff we built, but it was not even half as large as this thing, as we played on survival. This makes me want to play some modded Minecraft once again! Maby AOE or something like that would do :)
It's not actually, it's really close but gelid cryotheum is better, was testing it all a while ago when getting started with mine and with a 7x7x7 reactor in the checkered configuration; liquid enderium generated 18.3KiRF/t using 0.216mB/t and the cryotheum generated 18.7KiRF/t using 0.207mB/t :)
For those unfamiliar with the mod, the smallest possible big reactor you can make eats up a few yellorium ingots when not activated, this thing took 1.6 inventories of blocks.
Jordan if you use a different fluid on the outside layer and then have the fuel rods it'll be more efficient or have the diamond blocks as a buffer it'll be cooler. Also in sky factory if you stack up the yellowrite and then vain-mine it with fortune and auto-smelt it'll give you 2.5 where as the furnace gives you 1.0!
this is why i like mekanism. they have a fusion reactor and although it takes a long time to start up, it can produce over 3 MRF/tick. oh and the best part? once it is started up, it powers itself and fuel production also. plus it's smaller
Most efficient setup: Cryotheum between Rods, 1 Block between last rod and the casing, and Enderium between rods and casing. Also don't let it surpass 40k Degrees C. It may fail. Catastrophicly.
I'll admit. I didn't watch the series where you used big reactors, but I have used big reactors and I know that a 6x6x6 will power everything I make until I go several weeks into my world lol
+YahooSoccerj7 I've been using 2 3x3x3 reactors to power all of my equipment for the past several months. The only reason I use 2 is because I have stuff in 2 places, otherwise I would just make a bigger one.
Keep in mind, that the only measure of efficiency that most people use, is peak per tick power output. The combustion rate of your fuel there, was horrible. Something like 90 mb/t, whereas a 3x3 reactor at full throughput will use around 0.8 mb/t. So given that in practical terms, I'm probably never going to need more than 10-20% of what is generated by that giant reactor, I'd much prefer making a group (even a large group) of 3x3s or something similar, and keeping my per-tick fuel consumption rate down. I won't generate anywhere near as high numbers per tick, no; but I will be able to continue generating a low tick rate for a much longer period of time. It's the same principle which Extra Utilities' Survivalist Generator uses, which is why I like them so much, as well.
You got me into big reactors and managed to make a minecraft SP world running one 5x5 reactor until my graphics card decided to slow down and break after being a year old, so now I have a GTX 970
If only there was something you could use such power generation on. A large applied energistics facility, an ore processing facility, laser drills, ender quarries, and even Mystcraft/RFTool dimension support stations all combine to use roughly 50,000-150,000 RF/t. All that can be powered by a few turbines. Actually I just thought of a crazy difficult build to make. A reactor, powering a laser drill, to gather the resources necessary to make Mekanism ultimate power cells, that will use one of the computer mods to determine how full the current ultimate power cell is (that the reactor is currently also filling), and swap it out with a new empty one it has automatically created. The old full power cell will go into some kind of storage. If anyone can do that, consider yourself having beaten modded Minecraft.
400M Rf am I right? The fusion reactor can generate about 1 billion Rf/t(and also much more compact than the one in this video). And you can still configure it to produce more. I have configured mine to produce 10 billion Rf/t. You clearly are using a very old version of Mekanism, or you probably haven't tried the mod at all.
***** I've spawned a new dragon with DE, but at this point I just use the atomic multiplier from the Calculator mod to quadruplicate stuff like draconium blocks. Costs 1.5 billion RF per use, and I've used it over 100 times. RF is so abundant I've been known to quadruplicate dyes before as I haven't set up a Botania station and my Aura Cascade cascading colorer requires me to stand there and shear the sheepies to get the pigment.
Ssundee and MrCrainer did this in their sky factory 2 series, and cooled it with diamond blocks (yes they had that much diamond) and completely filled a buffed out core of 3 trillion!

the biggest issue would be getting the cryotheum for me in skyfactory, you can easily get the other stuff from essence. but the yellorium would take a huge farm
I was wondering when someone would finally give that energy storage multi-block a good run. It just takes the mother of all Big Reactors to do it! #rfchallenge
You can also build a tall reactor with a board pattern, attach four 9x9x16 turbines to it, put 4 ludicrite rings on the turbines and then insert the control rods slowly into the reactor until it reaches 87%. The result is 28KRF/t per turbine, and only ~0.600mB/t consumption on the reactor itself. That means 112KRF/t, using only a bar of yellorium every ~5 minutes or so.
Note: since cryotheum has incredible conductivity, it's not going to be useful for the reactor, fill every gap with graphite blocks instead, that allows the reactor to operate at very low tempartures without losing reactivity.

MFR chunkloaders work well if you have two of them that cycle loads. The longer the chunk is loaded the more power it consumes.

The best config for reactor, is checkerboard pattern with the rods and graphite, AND with a one block buffer on all the edges with cryo.

+YahooSoccerj7 I've been using 2 3x3x3 reactors to power all of my equipment for the past several months. The only reason I use 2 is because I have stuff in 2 places, otherwise I would just make a bigger one.
Big reactors are so much fun.
Keep in mind, that the only measure of efficiency that most people use, is peak per tick power output. The combustion rate of your fuel there, was horrible. Something like 90 mb/t, whereas a 3x3 reactor at full throughput will use around 0.8 mb/t.
So given that in practical terms, I'm probably never going to need more than 10-20% of what is generated by that giant reactor, I'd much prefer making a group (even a large group) of 3x3s or something similar, and keeping my per-tick fuel consumption rate down. I won't generate anywhere near as high numbers per tick, no; but I will be able to continue generating a low tick rate for a much longer period of time. It's the same principle which Extra Utilities' Survivalist Generator uses, which is why I like them so much, as well.
make the reactor wide and not high the higher the more energy but also more fuel consumption

You got me into big reactors and managed to make a minecraft SP world running one 5x5 reactor until my graphics card decided to slow down and break after being a year old, so now I have a GTX 970

If only there was something you could use such power generation on. A large applied energistics facility, an ore processing facility, laser drills, ender quarries, and even Mystcraft/RFTool dimension support stations all combine to use roughly 50,000-150,000 RF/t. All that can be powered by a few turbines.
Actually I just thought of a crazy difficult build to make. A reactor, powering a laser drill, to gather the resources necessary to make Mekanism ultimate power cells, that will use one of the computer mods to determine how full the current ultimate power cell is (that the reactor is currently also filling), and swap it out with a new empty one it has automatically created. The old full power cell will go into some kind of storage.
If anyone can do that, consider yourself having beaten modded Minecraft.

400M Rf am I right? The fusion reactor can generate about 1 billion Rf/t(and also much more compact than the one in this video). And you can still configure it to produce more. I have configured mine to produce 10 billion Rf/t. You clearly are using a very old version of Mekanism, or you probably haven't tried the mod at all.
***** I've spawned a new dragon with DE, but at this point I just use the atomic multiplier from the Calculator mod to quadruplicate stuff like draconium blocks. Costs 1.5 billion RF per use, and I've used it over 100 times. RF is so abundant I've been known to quadruplicate dyes before as I haven't set up a Botania station and my Aura Cascade cascading colorer requires me to stand there and shear the sheepies to get the pigment.
Ssundee and MrCrainer did this in their sky factory 2 series, and cooled it with diamond blocks (yes they had that much diamond) and completely filled a buffed out core of 3 trillion!

You should try hooking it up to multiple turbines and see if it gives you more rf/t.

I can't even imagine what a person would need that much RF for in SSP Minecraft. Maybe in SMP if you had a lot of people with energy needs.
I found if you have a checkerboard with a gap between the casing and rods, it is very efficient and works quite well
Using Graphite blocks and combining the checkerboard+the ring on the outside is the most efficient way to generate power. rf/ingot is highest

I really want to see this again but actively cooled. Just to see like 16 or so maximumly sized turbines going at once to triple or quadruple power output of this thing.

Experiment with coolant to reactor tube ratios. 1:1 1:2 2:3 3:5 5:8 8:13 13:21 etc. Then test different configurations.

I don't watch many of your other series, but I am familiar with big reactors, I always tend to make 4 2x2 fuel rods padded with cryotheum

7:40 You can actually do it pretty easily in Sky Factory if you have an automatic Minicio farm.
easy to do that in skyfactory ^^ magical crops and draconic evolution spawners (for blizz rods -> cryotheum) help you with all of it
You can also build a tall reactor with a board pattern, attach four 9x9x16 turbines to it, put 4 ludicrite rings on the turbines and then insert the control rods slowly into the reactor until it reaches 87%.
The result is 28KRF/t per turbine, and only ~0.600mB/t consumption on the reactor itself.
That means 112KRF/t, using only a bar of yellorium every ~5 minutes or so.
Note: since cryotheum has incredible conductivity, it's not going to be useful for the reactor, fill every gap with graphite blocks instead, that allows the reactor to operate at very low tempartures without losing reactivity.
