Imma pile on the request line and ask for your perspective on Savatage’s “Gutter Ballet.” The Oliva Brothers were the power supply to Savatage’s power station. RIP Criss Oliva🎸🥀
Just like Temple of the Dog, this song is about the passing of Andy Wood. Candlebox continues to contribute to the fight against addiction and have even performed this song acoustically at rehab clinics etc.
Yeah, Andy Wood was such a well-loved guy that a bunch of great music that came out then was about him and his passing away. This, the whole Temple of the Dog album, Alice in Chains' "Would?", the list goes on.
And all Love could say was they were poseurs and not from Seattle. That beef turned me off to her, and I was an avid fan of hers. As for Andy Wood, MLB's _Apple_ was, and remains, one of my all-time favorite albums.

Fun fact Candlebox was one of the first bands released from Madonna's Maverick Records label. Years ago, I was singing their song 'You' at karaoke in So Cal. Afterwards a guy came up to me to say I really nailed the song. Turns out he was the drummer for the band, lol. To this day, the best karaoke compliment I ever had.
Peter Klett is such an underrated guitar god that's not talked about enough. EVERY solo is on point. The riffs are powerful & captivating. Martin & Klett created magic.
Candlebox has a special place in my heart. Everytime i hear them, it brings back the 90's all over again. Thank's for keeping great music Alive 👍 check out "Butterfly" from them, it's one of my favorite.
Dude, I'm a fan, but especially touched by this observation. I know , you are preacher of positive, and I mean that in the most complimentary means I can convey. God bless you and your family, and thank you for all you do. Your work is healing and a blessing.
I was fortunate enough to go to a candle box concert in 99. They was at a show with collective soul headlining. They sounded just as perfect as they do in studio. Such a emotional triggering classic rock song. This and you.
I grew up in the Seattle area during this era, and graduated HS in 1994 so this one hits deep. The song was written for two friends of his who OD'd on Heroin.
I would suggest the unedited “You” and “Cover Me” then the official videos. You have to hear Kevin uncensored. That voice is strong and he is singing from his soul.
Thank you so much for reacting to this song. My daughter died from a heroin overdose in 2018 and struggled so much for 5 years. This song is so true and I can relate to watching her suffer and couldn't help her. I love what you said. It's good to see people have compassion instead of judgement for addicts. Nobody wants to be an addict. They just don't want to hurt anymore.
A lot of people don't care to listen to the addicts story. Friend died of a heroin OD, and I heard all the "junkie" talk. What they don't know is that he was pretty strait edge all his life. He got hurt and the doctors prescribed him Oxytocin for the pain. Then they cut him off cold turkey. The withdrawal was too much, and the pills cost too much on the street, so he tried heroin. It was cheap, it killed the pain and then killed him. Still to this day, I blame the doctors for his death.
It's always weird to me that people skip songs on any record. Even worse, the people that just skip to the singles . Most people aren't music heads though.
Absolutely right. I've always thought this was one of the best albums. It's probably my second favorite album of all time. It's just a very well put together album where as you say. I never skipped a song. I like the band a lot but not one of my favorite bands. This album however is one of my favs
Candlebox was/is such an underappreciated band! Great sound and writing. This song is in my top twenty ALL-TIME favorite songs out of my 1500+ song playlist. Simple yet beautiful melody. Great choice, as always.
Shout-out to the Grunge Era🙏 Great Music, Sad that we LOST SO MANY with SO MUCH TALENT during that Time... R.I.P.🙏 I Lost many Family Members & Friends Because of Addiction. I've been Clean for 26 Years now... I didn't want to Die, I wanted Life🙏
I tell you what.... I still get chills when I hear that song... Powerful ....."Tomorrow holds a sense of what I feel for you in my mind As you trip the final line. And that cold day when you lost control, Shame you left my life so soon you should have told me But you left me far behind." Rock On... Peace, Sharon
My brother in law died from driving drunk the wrong way over a bridge, semi hit him. When we went with my hubby’s sister to get the stuff out of his car this was the CD in his player. Always makes me think of him, and to take an Uber when I know I will be drinking.
Jamel - you're such a beautiful, old soul. ♥️ I love hearing your take on the lyrics. You've made me see songs in a new light that I've known for 40 years. (I just turned 40, but been listening to music since I was born lol.) Also, empty swimming pool videos really are the best.
I was 12 when this song came out, and in my innocent 12-year-old self I had no idea until much later the references to drugs in this song, I just really liked the beat. Years later, the song is heavy and powerful, and Kevin's voice is so booming while also crying out for help. Such a great song!
One of the most underrated 90's band, Candle box is a incredible band , you should check the entire album out , Rain , Arrow, Cover me ,, etc. Etc. Every song is good
this song breaks me every time i hear it, it destorys me inside its hard when you live it from the outside watching somebody you love destory themselves
"Its giving me some Alice In Chains vibes" It should this was also written about Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone, same as the AIC song "Would" take a deep dive into Candlebox, they are awesome, check out Cover me.
Lost my uncle/brother/roommate to cancer over a year ago. We used to love buying vinyl for each other, he was big into 90's grunge and alternative, he got me into this song/group. I never knew how much looking around the house after he left, listening to songs like this would hit me... I'm glad he found a way to make me remember him. 50 is too young for what he went through
I saw Candlebox open for Aerosmith. When they were done the lead singer came down and stood by me to watch Aerosmith. Happened with Slash at Motley Crue too... cuz....general admission. I miss those days.
Thanks for putting this here. I didn't realize and read this: americansongwriter.com/behind-the-song-candlebox-shares-what-the-chorus-in-far-behind-was-really-supposed-to-sound-like/
I started listening to Candlebox when I was a junior in high school. Still listen to this day. Kevin (the lead singer) is still touring, usually smaller venues.
Solely my opinion: I think this is one of the greatest songs ever. The message, the construction, the voice, everything about it is perfect. Just a deep deep song, full of emotion and hurt. And then when you learn and research the song, you find yourself learning about Andy Wood, and his rise and fall. His death resulted in the birth of Pearl Jam. It’s just DEEP.
You're analogies and always spot on. I love them and you're reactions too. You always entertain me and most of the time make me want to dance. They have lifted me up and feel so good. If you ever get to NC. I'd love to have you be the first man I've ever danced with. Most NC men never dance. I'm 53 now and I have never been out dancing. Thank you so much for everything you do. I just love you and your channel. You're so real and down to Earth.
Song about former Mother Love Bone lead singer, Andrew Wood. MLB went on to do a record with Chris Cornell as Temple of the Dog and then formed Mookie Blaylock which became known as Pearl Jam. Lots of Seattle ties with this genre of music.
I always felt that because these guys were signed at the same time as the big "grunge" bands and from the same geographic area that they were kinda over looked by the music industry....if the had come out a few years earlier or later they would have been huge. Love Kevin's vocals💕Nice job on the reaction👏
This song is really a rabbit hole of amazing music being born out of tragedy...This song was written in honor of their friend Andy Wood singer of the Mother Love Bone...Andy Wood also was the inspiration behind the group Temple of the Dog (super group which has Chris Cornell Eddie Vetter Mike McCready etc) to honor his memory...there are also a couple of Soundgarden songs written for him...it’s a pretty amazing story with lots of layers and lots of groups to look at Also love the Candlebox song You it’s my angry driving song... Great video as always!
'Rain' is one of Candlebox's overlooked tunes but it is stellar and one of their more developed songs. Candlebox suffered from not being grunge in the grunge era, but had a couple really good rock albums. Add me to the list of those suggesting Mother Love Bone. You don't fully grasp the Seattle sound of the 90s without hearing a little from them.. and feeling the lasting impact Andrew Wood had on Chris Cornell, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, and Candlebox, etc. 'Stardog Champion' is probably a good entry tune for Mother Love Bone.
This song was written as a tribute to Andrew Wood, who other's have already mentioned. He has a lot of connections to the Seattle Grunge seen. He was roommates at one point with brother Chris Cornell. Chris formed 'Temple of the Dog' as a tribute to him. Members included two of Andrew's bandmates from Mother Love Bone, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament, along with Eddie Vedder and a few others that were eventually Pearl Jam. Your Alice in Chains connection is their song "Would?" that is a tribute to him as well. He had reached so many people in his short lifespan there's no telling what he could have done himself.
I love that the song mirrors how the relationship between someone hurting and a friend goes. It starts out light little things and you notice but you don’t really say anything. Then intensifies to where it’s out of decontrol and maybe they have left and the friends who witnessed it all are left.
Saw them open for Rush. Great act. As they were leaving the stage after their last song and the crowd was screaming for more, they graciously explained that it was time for Rush, then the guitarist awesomely played the opening riff of Fly By Night. Been a Candlebox fan since.
Hugely personal for me. I know it's not written 100% about a human relationship, but it fits perfectly. I once showed my disappointment at a former love interests behaviour by embarrassing her at a party in front of many (she came to hug me on a couch and I shrugged her off onto the floor). Two years later she wouldn't even speak to me when I saw her. 20 years later (after the Army) I started Facebook and thought if I saw her I'd want to apologize. I found out instead she had died in her mid twenties to a brain tumor. Don't wait to apologize folks. This is her song when it comes on the USB.
I'm sorry you never recieved the verbal closure you need and wanted but, she does KNOW how sorry you are. I hope that can comfort you a little. Your absolutely right. Everyone should say their " I love yous". Time isn't guaranteed.
Saw them live at pain in the grass, way back when it was free, in Seattle. Then saw them a few years back again at a local venue and they still sound the same and emote just as much feeling with all their music.
The 90s rabbit hole is awesome. Its all the musicians who grew up listening to the late 60 and 70s music. They gave us the 90s revolution saturated with so much great music.
This song brings back memories - dark, hellish memories! I'm a recovering addict, almost 6 years unchained. I was certain that my addiction was going to win and to be honest, I prayed for death to come quickly. I kept a scrap of paper with some songs written on it to play at my funeral, if there was even going to be a funeral. This was one of those songs! I'm in tears now only because I was unable to display any kind of emotion then. I've come so far that I sometimes forget that hell and need to be reminded. I never have to go back! #WeDoRecover
Thank you for sharing this. Don’t know you but glad you are here to tell your touching experience. Happy you are hearing this song with us and not at your funeral. Stay bright Disco Lemonade 🕺🏾🍋
Yay!!!!! This is one of my faves. from way back!!! Thanks!!! Always seems empty pools are references to endings... drugs lead to emptiness and endings for some.
Love this! I was 14 too when this came out. I had no idea then what the message was but man listening to it now you can hear and almost feel the pain in his voice. Geez. Deep. Thank you!!!
reason you getting Alice in chains vibes is cause during the time this song came out there was a handful of bands that kinda had the same sound but every band was dif and great in their own right!!!!!!!!!!! Great reaction as always....This is one my favorite songs from those years !!!!
I was 15 when this song came out. This song always takes me back to my early driving days. Rolling in my '89 Le Baron with windows rolled down singing at the top of my lungs. This was one of many songs that got me through my teenage angst.
For the last 29 years, I have listened to Far Behind at least once daily. You, Sir, are keeping great music alive. Thank you for giving Candlebox a listen. Boxhead for life.
wow i haven't heard this song in ages...i was only 14/15 when i first heard it. but after hearing it again, it makes me think about DMX and his final days and the people that were around him as he overdosed.
There Were No Drugs Found In His System!! He Died From A Heart Attack “ They Killed Him “ They Always Say It’s An OD Or Suicide By Hanging....Wakey Uppy People!!
Man, that whole album is killer!! It’s like putting on a Boston album and letting it roll!! Check out the song “cover me” thank you for keeping great music alive!!
Got my Country Girl into this Group when we hooked up. 27 yrs together now. And every now & then She wants me to play this CD She always loved the Vibe🙂 💙 & Its playtime 👊
This song was a tribute to Andy Wood, RIP, of Mother Love Bone, many songs from Seattle bands are a tribute to him. Say Hello To Heaven by Temple of the Dog for example. Candlebox was amazing but got the short end of the stick when it came to fair treatment by record producers and a lot of people were saying they were “grunge copycats and wannabes” at the time. They got bad press and their second album was rushed as they were on a hectic touring schedule so it didn’t sell well at all. Such a shame, they were great in my opinion and his voice is powerful AF. Please check out Screaming Trees, I Nearly Lost You There. You won’t be sorry. 💜 Check out Long Gone Day live with Mark Lanegan and Layne Staley. It’ll blow your doors off!
My much beloved nephew was killed by a drunk driver. I was so brokenhearted, he was so much more than blood. This song reminds me of him so much, we listened to this song repeatedly on the way home from his funeral.

This band should've been bigger than they ended up being. Great singer, great sound.
Seen the group in columbus oh. and they were incredible, they were an opening band that i can’t even remember who for.
Absolutely! They’re immensely talented!
Agreed, I didn't get to see them I had to work but the local radio station aired the show and they sounded great.

Would. Far behind. Temple of the dogs songs. And many many more hits produced for andy’s tribute. What a legacy
Saw them in concert just a few years ago & they still sound the same! F*cking love this song.
I love that the song mirrors how the relationship between someone hurting and a friend goes. It starts out light little things and you notice but you don’t really say anything. Then intensifies to where it’s out of decontrol and maybe they have left and the friends who witnessed it all are left.
A gem amongst brilliant diamonds, Kevin Martin's voice is awesome. Love Candlebox!! ❤❤
Raw passion and emotion. I still come close to crying by the time it ends.
Wow , sad story . Sorry about your loss , that has to be tough .
Wow you just hit me hard with that.....
Vocals are awesome, powerful lyrics, but that solo,,,, that solo fucking slayed it
They were ahead of their time. Such an underrated band!
not really, just a couple of jams
Saw them live at pain in the grass, way back when it was free, in Seattle. Then saw them a few years back again at a local venue and they still sound the same and emote just as much feeling with all their music.
🖤 This song really brings back some memories.
We do recover. And it gets better ! Kudos to you on 6 years you are a miracle my soul sister ! 8-12-09 for me. Blessings sent to you luv 💜
@@maryannerazzano7692 Congratulations to you!! 1/1/2016 - the only New Year's resolution that I ever followed through with
The most underrated song ever. In my opinion
I am an OG but love this band. I would pop the Lucy or Candlebox CD in my car and just cruise.
Recommend “Simple Lessons” and “Change”.
Brings back so many memories. This song always gets me in the heart. RIP to all those I lost to the drug game.
Oh wow! I wore this song out!! ❤️❤️
this song always makes me teary eyed..it's sadly beautiful
reason you getting Alice in chains vibes is cause during the time this song came out there was a handful of bands that kinda had the same sound but every band was dif and great in their own right!!!!!!!!!!! Great reaction as always....This is one my favorite songs from those years !!!!
Thank you so much for doing this song! Brings back so many memories from my youth.
"You" is the best song ❤️. Must react to it. Everyone will love it 😘 make sure it's the explicit version
I was 15 when this song came out. This song always takes me back to my early driving days. Rolling in my '89 Le Baron with windows rolled down singing at the top of my lungs. This was one of many songs that got me through my teenage angst.
next from them should be "Rain" and "Blossom"
Definitely Rain!
For the last 29 years, I have listened to Far Behind at least once daily. You, Sir, are keeping great music alive. Thank you for giving Candlebox a listen. Boxhead for life.
I LOVE this song to this day even though I was 13 or 14 when it came out.
Candlebox will always be one of my favorites bands from the 90s
wow i haven't heard this song in ages...i was only 14/15 when i first heard it. but after hearing it again, it makes me think about DMX and his final days and the people that were around him as he overdosed.
There Were No Drugs Found In His System!! He Died From A Heart Attack “ They Killed Him “ They Always Say It’s An OD Or Suicide By Hanging....Wakey Uppy People!!
One of my favorite bands! Still putting out good music.
This song was written about his friend Andy Wood who was fighting a battle with drugs. 😥
That battle he sadly lost.
@@MrTommason1968 😩
Who he couldn't stand to be around as he disintegrated. " didn't mean to treat so bad "
This was one of my favorite songs to play when I was gig'n out in cover bands. Love this tune.
Thanks Mel!! I appreciate it brotha!! Reminds me of HS! 😂👏✊💯
- Cover Me, Change, Blossom, Rain... 💯💯✊
Check out Long Gone Day live with Mark Lanegan and Layne Staley. It’ll blow your doors off!
Long Gone Day Moore live is so good! 💜
Agreed! Mad Season!!
Oh yes! Screening Trees!
Man, I love the guitar melody, it always gives me chills. 🔥❤
My much beloved nephew was killed by a drunk driver. I was so brokenhearted, he was so much more than blood. This song reminds me of him so much, we listened to this song repeatedly on the way home from his funeral.
That's heartbreaking. So sorry for your loss 💔
