      22 year licensed semi-retired HVAC tech and full time DoD contract factory maintenance man here. Yeah, I know we used to get that a lot. "Could you do this simple plumbing job" from the homeowner. There's no such thing as a "simple" plumbing job if anything or everything goes wrong. I'm trained and highly skilled/qualified to silver braze and cold solder/sweat copper pipe. Even a slight drip because the (gate valve)...usually never (ball valve) won't turn completely off creates a potential problem. Never mind an old cruddy gate valve that the packing gland blows out as soon as you rotate it. That is if they even have a shutoff at all. I've had to shutdown and depressurize wells and go out to the curb by the street to turn off the main more than I care to admit as well. These days they have SharkBite fittings, but back in my day when I started and up until maybe 8 or 10 years ago or so they didn't. I remember when they first came out they were stupid expensive and my boss wouldn't let us use one while changing out a water heater or working on a boiler unless we absolutely had to. That was back when one fitting was like $40 - $50 each. Today in 2024 you can go to any Lowe's, Menards or Home Depot and buy Sharkbite fitting for $5 to $15 each and it spoils everybody doing so. Bottom line you can get into BIG trouble with HVAC or plumbing really quickly as a homeowner trying to do the work yourself with no professional training and without the proper tools. What you as the homeowner don't usually see is us out at our trucks swearing up a storm and reaching for a cigarette as we are very POed and trying to overcome this evolution or obstacle. Nothing is ever easy as it seems. The first DIY homeowner you hear who has a office job by day and runs their mouth on the internet in the evenings and on the weekends RUN FAR AWAY from them and don't look back twice! They couldn't begin to know what they are doing or talking about. I've been having one of "those weeks" the last two weeks here in fact. I'm thinking of checking to see if anybody broke a mirror in one of the bathrooms or something. Should have seen the mess I had yesterday with a Trane 10 ton package unit and also our parking lot security lights.

    • @chrislang5659
      @chrislang5659 16 дней назад +1

      @JohnDoeEagle1 the boss bought a hotel. I was pushed to be the maintenance man. I wish I had x-ray vision when we first looked at it. You just never know how bad all the different trades were until you turn the lights and water on. In this case I guess the plumbers were the lowest bid! I can't tell you how many walls and ceilings I've had to open up and repair because of bad solder joints, rot from ferrous to copper, and even shark bite connections! The best one is every fiberglass shower was installed poorly, about once ever other month, a downstairs bathroom light fixture fills up with water! That equals two rooms down until the drain gets fixed, sheetrock repaired, texture sprayed, and paint applied. About one week! I've learned a lot working in that building!

    I feel you. I replaced a kitchen faucet last weekend. Easy right? Well it was leaking. For a long time. I was going to fix it, but I had motor neuropathy I did not know about so I couldn't. Then once I could I just put it off. For about another year. As a result all the shit under the sink was rusted pretty bad. So of course nothing just unscrewed like it was supposed to. I ended up using a damn reciprocating saw with a demolition blade to just cut the damn faucet off. What was left still would not fall down. So I had to drill holes and when that did not work more sawing. Eventually I got all the shit removed and then the new stuff went in rather easily. But I officially HATE home plumbing jobs THE MOST. Replacing the backyard hose bib? Bigger pain in the ass than it should have been. Replacing the water cut off? WAY bigger pain in the ass than it should have been. The sink faucet? I had to use a demolition saw. Give me electrical projects any day, worst that can happen is a little zap. Or a short that keeps tripping a breaker. And yea maybe a fire or you get electrocuted and cease to exist, but at least it isn't plumbing!

Had a subcontractor, hired an Amish crew to do most of the work, that did the electrical and complained about his bid because everything was so well built, 90 year old house, it was going to take forever to finish the job. Then the trouble started... He and his "county inspector" friend almost went to jail.
