    Keeping the root note in the mind is good. Establish the root note and stick to it during practice. The third note is easy to get flat. C and G can be spot on but E can be somewhat flat.

    Sing major and minor scales starting on your highest note and drop intervals (numerically) 8-7-8-6-8-5-8-4-8-3-8-2-8-1 using vowels, then dip-thong (google it) vowels. get used to the feeling of the release. sometimes, people have issues hearing certain key/chord movements... listening to some early 20th century romantic music might expose you to a lot of strange melodic possibilities that you've never tried. humming along to classical melodies also works really well to train in odd intervals.

    Yes, if you can sing out sheet music, or even just music on the radio in solfeggio then ultimately as a vocalist you will advance your ability to not only stay on key but be able to write out melodies and scales by just listening.

    No problem! From one singer to another, I'm happy to help. And you're spot on with the period and composer. If you want some other challenges try some Holst, and then if you'd like to go really advanced, try Bartok - the unusual modes are a real challenge. To advance, try using the same descending patterns I mentioned earlier but in place of major/minor, try harmonic minor, then try the other modes. Then try singing up and down the melodic minor scale.

    It also helps to be a musician. A great skill that is useful in numerous ways is being able to hear chord progressions in your head.

    @DiscipleW You've made a good point, cause 90% of singing is all psychological, you need to be in a constant momentum of confidence and "stabability" to sing professionally. TIP: Conquer any unnecessary nerves.

    I can sing on key just fine more or less when singing acapella or with an acoustic guitar. But when I'm playing with my band, and everything's really loud and crazy I tend to sing things a little bit flat all the time. It's very frustrating lol.

      My singer finds this a problem quite often, are you able to hear yourself properly during rehearsals? how are you hearing yourself in the room?

    • @mattstanyer
      @mattstanyer 10 лет назад

      Aaron Dolby Typically I use in-ear monitors, or I'll wear ear plugs and use the floor wedges and that works fine usually. I think the problem could be that the volume is too loud and its affecting the way you're hearing the notes being played. Which will affect your singing as well. I'm gonna see if we can run everything at a lower volume and see if that helps at all

    • @Erik_Boberg
      @Erik_Boberg 5 лет назад

      I got the same problem. For me I think its because I start singing with too loud volume for the type of singing im doing to try to hear myself better. Like a soft passage in a song and I sing with that soft sound but too loud.

    My speech therapist always says it, how the mood influences the voice. And she stresses it bringing also as an example the fact that in German (she's Austrian) "voice" and "mood" have the same root: "Stimme" and "Stimmung". I think we all made this experience of not singing well when too excited or very well when "feeling" a lot the song.

    @DiscipleW It happens that's why in the morning it is not the best time to sing. The body is not warm and the blood flow needs to circulate. It is best to drink a tea nothing cold and to take a walk or jog a for 10 minutes and come back.

    Thanks again. I'm not a real singer, but I'd like to learn (don't sight read, have about a 1 1/4 octave range after experiencing the "100-day cough" recently, etc.). So your help is appreciated.

    @DiscipleW It could be the vowels you are using are inconsistent. You need a teacher/coach to hear you and telling what you are doing that is off. Vowels need to change slightly in the upper registers to avoid. Look into IPA and see if it helps with the language issue.

    My Acapella is getting better. I just keep practicing, with mic, then record and play back. I pick hard songs to sing like the.."Star Spangled Banner" I like when I get to these parts: O'er the ramparts (Sounds like I died)...We watched.. were so gallantly streaming? (Voice goes low). I have to sing certain parts higher and lower. And then I am not supposed to strain. I sometimes, talk it out.
    Ya know that song. Don't Close Your Eyes by Kix..Oh yes, that is a song, that makes dogs cry, when I sing it! lol.. I am not going Acapella on that one. Tries to sing,,Somewhere over the rainbow, my voice just blew. I said. Somewhere..Somewhere..Oh Some where..If I sing these songs in a made up language, sounds good, or If I lip trill the entire song. I sing better laying down. I sound way better with music playing behind me.
    Ya know for a great laugh I should sing one of these songs..Acapella and have ya all listen to it. They say laughter is the best medication. I shall do a video like this, once it is up I let ya all know. I am not to held liable if you die of laughter, or if your ribs hurt! Ok, thanks! (Bows)!

    Wow, thanks for your response, midpat2. I will start with these today. LOL, I don't have to google "dipthongs" as I studied linguistics in graduate school. By early 20th century romantic, do you mean things like the songs (choral and solo) pieces by Sergei Rachmaninov, et. al.? I already have "Zdes' khorosho" in my favorites. I'm humming it now : )

    i got to ask something:
    is the song based only on one scale of the piano-only the 7 notes?If you go to the lower or the higher side of the piano but the same scale does that mean that you're singing another key???

    I have a problem when it comes to the chorus of certain songs, or when there's a strange, small interval (like dropping from A natural to F#). For instance, in Gordon Lightfoot's song "Beautiful" (lol, I do the strange interval just fine in the verse), I can't find the right key for the chorus about half the time when I'm just singing to myself at home. And the funny thing is that I stay right on key in difficult baritone and bass parts without accompaniment. Anyone have any suggestions?
