    Humans, awkward on land, worst on the internet. Can't we all just enjoy the video and not leave comments that try to argue about evolution? I wonder how terrified that platypus must be when being held by it's tail though.

      Because these videos are all about science therefore debates between science and religion is always the theme.
      Why? Because we're talking about what reality is and let's say this proves all religions wrong (in some mind blowing way lol) then some of us are following futile and damaging dogmas.

    The "bill" of the platypus has many electrical and mechanical sensors running longitudinal down its bill that can sense the slight electrical discharge given off by its prey. It uses these combination of senors in its bill to "see" its prey and find food in the water and mud. It also closes its eyes and ears while doing this to focus entirely on the sensors in its bill. This is similar to how bats use sonar to "see".

    • @epfizerdoolittleajl2165
      @epfizerdoolittleajl2165 9 лет назад +3

      No essentially, this is what ducks looked like whilst evolving into beavers. Some just stayed similar (current platypuses) and others evolved into beavers :-)

    Thought it was platypi?

    • @thatskycricket
      @thatskycricket 10 лет назад +6

      Exactly what I was thinking.
      Scientists generally use "platypuses" or simply "platypus". Colloquially, the term "platypi" is also used for the plural, although this is technically incorrect and a form of pseudo-Latin; the correct Greek plural would be "platypodes".
      That's what I found out... :/

    The theory of evolution describes how one species can have a branch that ends up becoming a new species...It doesn't require it to happen with every branch. If over generations a branch ends up with some traits from another species and that "mix" happens to be particularly well suited to it's environment, it may not continue to pick up the additional traits needed to be classified as a different species and continue in that general form (with only minor changes) for as long as that form "works."

    @insanic1 there are a few mutations that turned up outside of Africa but they are minor. As it is, somebody from East Africa is less related to somebody from West Africa than somebody from Ireland compared to someone from China, because the group that left Africa was even smaller. There are whole books about this out there, and I think a NOVA special a few years ago.

    @insanic1 Also, subspecies designation these days is usually based on genetic studies rather than just morphology. Differences in size or appearance alone may indicate something worth studying, but it doesn't always result in declaration of a new sub-species. Some animals and plants have, upon genetic study, turned up to have fewer or more subspecies than previously thought.
